Action on Prajwal Revanna is OK, but false case against Revanna, says Deve Gowda

BENGALURU: Breaking his silence on the sexual abuse charges against his grandson and Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, JDS supremo HD Deve Gowda on Saturday clarified that he has no objection to the legal action initiated against Prajwal. But he alleged that the ruling Congress has created a case against his son and MLA HD Revanna. Prajwal fled the country after casting his vote in Hassan on April 26. After this, the Karnataka government set up an SIT based on the state womens commissions recommendation, to probe the Hassan sex scandal. Meanwhile, the SIT arrested Revanna on May 4 in connection with the alleged abduction of a victim of the alleged sexual abuse. Revanna got bail and was released from jail on May 14. But he is facing another case of alleged sexual abuse and hearing will be held on Monday. Gowda made his last public appearance on April 26 when he cast his vote at Paduvalahippe village in Hassan district along with his wife Channamma and family members. He did not step out of his Padmanabha Nagar house in Bengaluru after the scandal came to light. Attempts to tarnish image of family: HDD Deve Gowda did not even campaign in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in Karnataka. On Saturday, he turned 92 and visited Sri Tirumalagiri Venkataramanaswamy Temple at JP Nagar as he does on his birthday every year and chose to speak to the media on the occasion. We have no objection to the action being taken against Prajwal. But people of the state have realised how a case has been created against Revanna, he said. He said he will not comment on it as his son and former CM HD Kumaraswamy has spoken elaborately on behalf of his (Gowdas) family. I will not take the names of those involved, but action should be taken against all of them, including Prajwal, as per law. It is the governments responsibility, he said. Replying to a query, Gowda said its true that his detractors are trying to tarnish the image of his family. On BJP leader and lawyer Devaraje Gowdas allegation that Deputy CM DK Shivakumar is behind the conspiracy, the former PM clarified that Kumaraswamy has spoken about all matters related to it. As JDS state chief, Kumaraswamy has been handling various issues related to the party. He has even clarified that action should be taken against all those, including Prajwal, involved in the circulation of obscene pen drives, he said. The former PM took exception to mediapersons camping outside his house. What have you achieved (by camping outside my house)? Now I am putting an end to it and you are free to telecast. I have campaigned (for the NDA candidates) in the LS elections and will speak after June 4 (when poll results will be announced), he said. Arrest warrant against MP An arrest warrant against absconding Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna was issued on Saturday in connection with the alleged sexual abuse cases. The warrant was issued by the special magistrate court on an application by SIT

Arrest warrant against JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna

Arrest warrant against JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna A special court for MPs and MLAs here has issued an arrest warrant against JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna in the sexual assault case. The court issued the warrant in connection with the sexual assault case registered against Prajwal on Saturday in which his father and Holenarasipura MLA H D Revanna is also an accused. Revanna, son of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, is on bail after spending seven days in jail after four-day police custody for allegedly kidnapping a woman. There are three cases of sexual assault registered by three women against Prajwal, the NDA's Hassan Lok Sabha candidate who is at large. A blue corner notice has been issued against him by the Interpol. Trouble started for Prajwal after large number of explicit videos showing women being sexually assaulted allegedly by him became public. Subsequently, the Karnataka government constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the recommendations of Karnataka State Commission for Women chairperson Nagalakshmi Chowdhary to probe Prajwal's alleged atrocities on women.

If Devaraje Gowda has any proof of 100 crore bribe he must go to Lokayukta says D K Shivakumar

BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has refuted the allegations levelled by BJP leader Devaraje Gowda that he offered Rs 100 crore to the latter to frame JDS state president and former CM H D Kumaraswamy as the mastermind behind the circulation of pendrives containing obscene videos allegedly of Hassan JDS MP Prajwal Revanna. If Devaraje Gowda has any proof, he must lodge a complaint with the Lokayukta. He must be mentally unstable and my sympathies are with him. The media is aware and intelligent enough to separate the chaff from the grain. It is not correct to report whatever is said, Shivakumar said here on Saturday. To a query on his meeting with Devaraje Gowda, Shivakumar said hundreds of people meet him as he is a deputy CM. Both good and bad people visit me, and it is impossible to assess the background of people and their intentions. I havent spoken or done anything wrong, hence I dont worry about these things. They are using my name for the sake of publicity, he said. On former PM H D Deve Gowda demanding action against all those who are involved in the pendrive case, he said, Deve Gowda has gone to a temple on his birthday. May God give him health and happiness. I pray that his pain goes away. I wish him a happy birthday. Meanwhile, Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy refuted allegations of his involvement in the case. Devaraje Gowda had also alleged that Shivakumar had formed a team of ministers, including Cheluvarayaswamy, Krishna Byre Gowda and Priyank Kharge, to strike a deal on framing Kumaraswamy in the circulation of the pen drives. The role of the three in the case is being discussed. Prajwal, who made the videos, his driver Karthik who downloaded them and Devaraje Gowda who is facing charges of sharing the pendrives. But Devaraje Gowda, who had been feuding with Revannas family for a year, is now close to them, he said. Let Kumaraswamy get Prajwal back from abroad instead of dragging Shivakumar into the issue, he said. Since Shivakumar is the DCM, Devaraje Gowda might have met him to give certain information and it is not right to twist it otherwise, he said. Hitting at Devaraje Gowda, RDPR Minister Priyank Kharge said the former might have had the blessings of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to release the pen drives. He was the Holenarasipura BJP candidate who claimed to have direct contact with Shah. Hence, he might have had the blessings of Shah, he said. The JDS and BJP conspired to hush up the case as they were projecting that the release of the pen drives a bigger crime than who committed the crime, he said. Responding to Devaraje Gowdas remark that the government will collapse after he comes out of jail, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara said then he will have to be in jail, while Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, Let him come out of jail first and later we will see whether the government falls or not.

Activists say its time to protect eco-democracy in India

BENGALURU: Climate change activists from across the country, including Karnataka, on Saturday highlighted how the indiscriminate granting of clearances to large projects is impacting the environment and doing irreparable damage to the natural resources. They strongly advocated for the protection of environmental democracy. The group alleged that several new laws and amendments are weakening the forests, coastal zones, wildlife, biodiversity, minerals, and other resources, facilitating environmental destruction. During the discussion, a report was also released by Fridays for Future (FFF), Bahutava Karnataka, and Peoples Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) on the State of Indias environment over the last decade. Disha Ravi, Founder, FFF said, It is getting very difficult for activists to survive in the country and it is crucial to hold people in power accountable. We need to think of how we will protect our democracy and ones right to ask questions. She added that according to the Global Witness Report 2023, India is the seventh most dangerous country to be an environment defender and the jailing of activists has subsequently gone up. The upcoming government should prioritise climate change policy, as it will be a big equaliser in the coming years, she said. Rohit Prajapati, environmentalist and founding member of Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti said, The country has reached a stage where we dont have a dispute with the state or judiciary on the facts. Nobody denies that the data. National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders have been extending deadlines for restoration of severalwater bodies but nothing changes on the ground. Many rivers across the country are beyond rejuvenation.

TN farmers fear opening river sand quarries will lead to water crisis

CHENNAI: The state governments attempt to reopen river sand quarries in the delta districts after nearly nine months has evoked mixed reactions from farmers, sand lorry owners and civil engineers. Farmers have voiced strong concerns, urging the government not to reopen the quarries, as they fear the extraction of sand from riverbeds will affect water storage and flow in the region. KV Elankeeran, president of Federation of Cauvery Delta Farmers Association, told TNIE, The use of machines to take sand from riverbeds in the Cauvery region has led to water scarcity, especially in areas like Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai. These areas have seen a significant drop in groundwater levels. Pointing out that the neighbouring states such as Karnataka and Kerala have started using manufactured sand (M-sand) and plastering manufactured sand (P-sand), Elankeeran urged the state government to reconsider reopening the quarries. On the other hand, S Yuvaraj, president of Tamil Nadu State Sand Lorry Owners Association, emphasised the importance of river sand for quality construction. However, he suggested avoiding the use of machines for mining in river beds. Instead of machines, manpower can be used for sand extraction. The ban on machinery use in the Palar river should be applied to other rivers as well, Yuvaraj suggested. He noted the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court has instructed the water resources department not to use machines for excavating river beds. After the Model Code of Conduct for the parliament elections is lifted, Yuvaraj said, he is planning to submit a detailed proposal for mining activities to the government. MC Vasantha Kumar, secretary of Metropolitan Civil Engineering Association told TNIE, Gujarat has a council for professional civil engineers, and Karnataka recently passed a bill for their own council. We have been requesting the state government for long to set up a similar council. He added, If the council is established, civil engineers, along with the government, can spread awareness among the public regarding balanced use of both river sand and M-Sand. Highlighting that the construction cost has gone up from `2,150 to `2,450 per square feet, he said this is the right time to intervene in the issue. A senior government official responded saying, While discussions on reopening quarries in delta districts are under way, we are yet to decide on the number of quarries. After the MCC is lifted, the government will take a policy decision, and quarry operations may start by the end of June or July.

Karnataka: Palike prepared to face monsoon, says Tushar Girinath

BENGALURU: Chief commissioner of BBMP Tushar Girinath said on Saturday that the Palike is ready to face the monsoon. Girinath told reporters here that 300 trees were uprooted and branches of 800 trees fell in the recent rain in the city. BBMP personnel had cleared those uprooted trees and branches. He said 40 teams have been formed to deal with rain-related incidents during monsoon. They will work 22/7 in the city. The BBMP has deployed marshals and health inspectors to prevent dumping of garbage along the roads and into open drains. Stormwater drains get clogged due to dumping of garbage and this leads to flooding, Girinath said. He said eight control rooms in each zone and a team in each sub-division will work in close coordination with personnel from BWSSB and BESCOM. All major drains have been cleaned. All roadside drains will be cleaned by May 31. Motors have been kept ready to pump rainwater from low-lying areas. People need not worry or panic, he said. He said the 5% property tax rebate would be extended till July and warned defaulters that their movable and immovable properties will be attached or auctioned as per law to recover tax arrears.

India, record holder of hate speeches, says ADR founder

BENGALURU: India holds the proud record of being the country with the highest number of hate speeches . With politics ingrained, no one is open to others views, which often leads to conflicts. We have not evolved as a democracy, said Trilochan Sastry, founder and chairman of the Association for Democratic Reforms. ADR is also the organization that filed several petitions against the electoral bond scheme, which was subsequently struck down by the Supreme Court bench, and termed as unconstitutional. Speaking about Transparency, Accountability, and the Threat to Independent Institutions at the PK Dey Memorial Lecture on Saturday, Sastry said, The Election Commission of India (ECI), an independent body, has received over 20,000 complaints from civil society groups and individuals to act against hate speeches and flouting of several other Model Code of Conduct (MCC), however, there has been no action. He touched upon the necessity to keep independent institutions such as ECI, the judiciary, CBI, the Income Tax department, and others free from the excess of executive powers for a healthy democracy. He raised a fundamental question asking, When a common man breaks the law, he can be arrested and jailed. What about when the government breaks a law or the police? Our constitution lacks answers on this. At least the US has the tort law. The founder explained that since 2014, 8,947 cases under the UAPA, 788 under Sedition, and 1,797 cases under the Money Laundering Act have been registered respectively, the highest when compared to previous regimes. He added that officers in positions of independent bodies end up joining political parties, with some becoming ministers or governors, which raises eyebrows on whether they were actually independent during the years in office or not. Anil Verma, Head, ADR, during his address, spoke about a three-pronged approach to keeping institutions independent. He said, Targeting political parties and not allowing them to field candidates with tainted profiles and criminal cases against them; intensive campaigns to educate voters, especially youth, are needed. Lastly, to maintain pressure on political parties, judicial activism is critical for transparency and accountability. He added that ADRs recent report read that 31 percent of candidates are crorepatis and 19 percent have criminal cases against them.

Siddaramaiah and DK Shiva Kumar face challenge as many in race for Council poll tickets

MYSURU: With elections to the Legislative Council approaching fast, it has posed a fresh challenge to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his Deputy DK Shiva Kumar as many senior leaders and fresh faces are knocking at their doors for tickets. Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar had managed the ticket distribution for the assembly election as well as the concluded Lok Sabha elections, where 65 per cent of the contestants were children of ministers and senior leaders. But they have a bit of a challenge on their hands now, as they have to pick the candidates based on the region, seniority, service to the party, caste factor etc. Understandably, senior party leaders, who did not get the chance to contest the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, are lobbying hard for tickets. Congress could win eight of the 12 seats and the opposition BJP and JDS combine can wrest the remaining four. The long list of Congress candidates includes party chief spokesman Ramesh Babu, former Council Chairman UR Sudarshan, veteran BL Shankar, KPCC Womens Wing president Pushpa Amarnath, KPCC General Secretary Ramachandrappa, Vijay Mulgund, Manjunath of Chitradurga, Ivan D Souza from Mangaluru, ex-MP VS Ugrappa and ex-MLA N Sampangi. Former chairman of the Backward Class Commission CS Dwarkanath, considered to be a voice of nomads and adivasis, is also a strong contender for the council ticket. The 12 Council seats will fall vacant on June 17. At the same time, sitting MLCs K Govindaraju, Minister NS Boseraju and Aravindkumar Arali from Kalburgi are seeking continuation. Congress has an uphill task striking a balance and ensuring that disgruntlement among rejected candidates does not set further gloom on Congress prospects. Adding to pressure, opposition parties have been claiming, day in and out, that the Congress government will collapse after the Lok Sabha elections. Daydream: Siddaramaiah slams Eknath Shinde, says Karnataka government stable Maharashtra CM Ekanath Shindes recent statement that the Congress government in Karnataka will face the same fate as its coalition in Maharashtra has triggered speculation in political circles. The majority of aspirants are waiting for the Lok Sabha results to lobby for the Council seats. SIDDU FLOODED with requests in home turf Too many Congress leaders from Siddaramaiahs backyard have shown interest in contesting the election adding to his worry. Sources said it is almost certain that Dr Yathindra Siddaramaiah will be made a Council member for vacating the Varuna seat for his father Sidaramaiah. District Congress president BJ Vijaykumar, who missed the Lok Sabha election ticket from Mysuru-Kodagu, ST Development Corporation former chairman SC Basavaraju from Varuna constituency, former MLA HP Manjunath , ex-MLA GN Nanjundaswamy, Veena Achaiah, former mayor Ayub Khan and city Congress president R Murthy too are seeking tickets. Siddaramaiah, however, has kept cards close to his chest.

High-octane year for Karnataka government, Parties now pin hopes on LS poll outcome

Around the same time last year, after a hard-fought election, Congress won a clear majority in the Karnataka assembly. After hectic parleys in the national capital, Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar took oath as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, respectively, on May 20. Now, as the government completes its first year in office, peoples verdict on its performance will be out on June 4, when the results to the 2024 Lok Sabha polls will be announced. It was indeed a politically charged year for the state government and the ruling as well as the opposition parties. For the people in general, it was a bittersweet year, but it was the worst for farmers hit by severe drought. It is not fair to judge the state governments performance based only on the outcome of the Lok Sabha polls in the 28 seats, especially in the state, where the voting patterns for the assembly and Lok Sabha polls are different. But that is how it is viewed now. The Congress campaign in Karnataka was mainly mounted on its governments performance, especially the implementation of five guarantees which included free travel for women in state transport corporation buses, free electricity, financial assistance to women heads of households, Rs 170 in lieu of an additional five kilograms of rice to BPL families, and financial assistance to unemployed youth. From day one, it appeared that the entire focus of the state government was on implementing the guarantee schemes and burnishing its report card to maximise its gains in the Lok Sabha polls. Congress leaders are showcasing the Karnataka model to give credence to its national manifesto. Politically speaking, it did reasonably well on that strategy. However, questions were raised over the effective implementation of those schemes on the ground, its impact on development works and the diversion of funds meant for taking up development works exclusively for people from scheduled castes and tribes. The long-term benefits of such schemes and their impact on the economy are yet to be studied. Last year, it looked like a period between the assembly and Lok Sabha polls. While Congress kept its state unit fighting fit to do an encore of assembly poll performance in the Lok Sabha elections, the government took on the Centre on various issues, including alleged disparity in the devolution of taxes and drought relief. In an unprecedented move, the CM led a protest against the Centre and the state approached the Supreme Court for drought relief funds. The Center-state relations were strained. Farmers, who were in distress due to drought, were hit by delays in disbursement of compensation. Bomb explosion in popular Bengaluru cafe leaves 10 injured The law and order issues caused discomfiture to the government. From a blast at Rameshwaram Caf in Bengaluru, the raising of alleged pro-Pakistan slogans on the corridors of Vidhana Soudha by Congress supporters, assault on a shopkeeper playing devotional songs to gruesome murders in Hubballi, Karnataka was in the news for the wrong reasons. It may not be prudent to say the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated, but they do reflect the situation on the ground. Even in a sex scandal allegedly involving JD(S) MP from Hassan, Prajwal Revanna, the government should have taken proactive measures to prevent the circulation of videos to protect the identity of victims while initiating stern action against the accused. All along, the big question the party kept dodging was whether Siddaramaiah would continue as chief minister for five years or hand over the baton to DK Shivakumar. There is no clarity on it yet, but not giving a clear picture to the people of the state exposes the delicate power equations within the party. On its part, after its drubbing in the assembly polls, the BJP managed to regroup itself to some extent under the new state president BY Vijayendra. But to what extent it has made a turnaround will be known only after the Lok Sabha poll results. Although it is a Modi-centric poll for the BJP, local leaders do play an important role in taking the top leaderships message to the cadre and voters. For JD(S), it was a year of challenges and existential crisis. After the poor show in the assembly polls, it was rocked by the sex scandal allegedly involving its MP. As the Siddaramaiah government enters its second year in office, Lok Sabha results could further strengthen its position, or it may trigger intense political churning in the state.

Surveillance on 350 Female MNC Staff as ISIS Targets Women Employees

NEW DELHI: In a massive operation, security agencies have mounted surveillance on as many as 350 women employees in the critical security verticals of multinational companies, mostly American in origin. Sources privy to the development said these women, handling sensitive roles in the security architecture of multinational companies, are being targeted by international terror outfits like ISIS with the ulterior motive of exploiting them for future sinister plots. A banned terror outfit from Kerala has reached out to these women under the guise of similar jobs or being employed by such companies. They have also taken accommodations in proximity to their residences, the sources said. The Kerala-based terror group, which subsequently shifted its headquarters to Shaheen Bagh in the national capital over a decade ago, has planted its handlers to tap female employees who might be oblivious to the insidious terror tactic. While the activities of the local terror outfit were first noticed by the agencies about six months ago, the surveillance net was cast about two months ago. The women being targeted by the terror groups are mostly employed in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. Besides surveillance, the agencies are also investigating their family backgrounds to enlist support in persuading the women from going astray. ISIS is estimated to have targeted the Indian diaspora in West Asia, who in turn identified gullible women professionals back home to enlist them for their insidious agenda. These women could be used to cause major operational disruptions in the MNCs, potentially affecting consumer interests and damaging India's brand image. Through surveillance, the agencies aim to unravel the larger network of terror groups and their expansive footprint to secure national interests, the sources said. While ISIS has no intention of holding territory in India, they aim to recruit cadres to further the Jihadi agenda in the outfits theaters of influence. Without divulging specifics, a source in the Delhi police said, We do keep a watch on such suspects through technical and human means when we get specific leads. What has worried the agencies is that technically proficient youths have joined ISIS ranks. The recent conviction of a professionally qualified Kashmiri couple, the husband being an engineering graduate with an MBA and the wife having an IT background, who joined ISIS and were recently convicted in a terror case registered by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), highlights this trend. The Kashmiri couple was linked to the Islamic State-Khorasan Province, a front group of ISIS, despite holding degrees like B.Tech and MBA. Jahanzaib Sami Wani and his wife, Hina Bashir Beigh, moved to the national capital in 2019 from Jammu and Kashmir. Jahanzaib was employed at a United Kingdom-based company, and his spouse had a bachelors degree in computer applications with an MBA. She served at some banks before taking a break for her wedding on October 6, 2019, when Srinagar was still under lockdown after Article 370 was repealed by the Centre on August 5 that year. The couple was convicted on terror charges on May 6 in the 2020 case originally registered by the special cell of the Delhi police and subsequently taken over by the NIA. First arrest warrant issued against absconding MP Prajwal Revanna

BENGALURU: The first arrest warrant was issued on Saturday against Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, who had been absconding after the sexual abuse cases registered against him. Sources confirmed that the warrant was issued by the 42nd Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court following an application by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) established to investigate the cases against Prajwal. However, sources in the SIT refused to reveal the grounds mentioned in the application filed before the court seeking the issuing of the arrest warrant and asked what more grounds are required than the grave charges against him. The warrant against the MP, who is facing three such cases, is seen as the first step toward seeking the cancellation of his passport, which would compel him to return back to India, an SIT official told TNIE. No objection to action against Prajwal, but case has been 'created' against H D Revanna: Deve Gowda The JD(S) MP fled the country shortly after the second phase of the Lok Sabha polls concluded in Karnataka on April 26. Earlier, Interpol issued a Blue Corner Notice seeking information on his whereabouts following a request by the SIT through the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). However, there has not been any response yet. It was also learnt that the absconding MP who was earlier said to be in Germany has travelled via train to London along with two friends. It is said that an Indian origin London-based businessman helped Prajwal to commute and that his friends, who accompanied him on train, are said to be from Dubai and Bengaluru. However, SIT officials did not confirm the same. It was earlier said that the accused MP had booked flight tickets to come to India on May 15. SIT officials who have collected the bank account details of Prajwal have reportedly freezed seven of his bank accounts and the team is also gathering information about those who deposited money in the accounts.

Heavy Rain Provides Relief to Sweltering Hyderabad, Causes Traffic Chaos

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad experienced heavy rain and 40 kmph winds on Saturday, providing a much-needed respite from the sweltering heat that had persisted until the afternoon. The rain, which began with heavy downpours in various parts of the city, intensified later. The rain caused significant traffic jams across the city. Roads in places like Miyapur, Chandanagar, Serilingampally, and Medchal were heavily waterlogged. According to the TS Development Planning Society (TSDPS), Miyapur received 45 mm, Chandanagar 38 mm, and Serilingampally 42 mm of rainfall. Power supply was interrupted in many areas, and roads turned into ponds. The IMD has forecast rain for five days. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed the GHMC and civic staff and officials to remain active. Floodwaters accumulated on the National Highway near Chintalkunta in Vanasthalipuram, causing vehicles to come to a standstill between Panama and LB Nagar. Heavy rains lashed Medak district. Sangareddy experienced thunderstorms and heavy rain. The weather centre said mentioned that a cyclonic circulation persisted from southern Chhattisgarh through Telangana and Rayalaseema to southern interior Karnataka, causing rain. Moderate to heavy rain fell in many districts across the state, resulting in crop losses. Paddy at market yards and with rice millers was reportedly damaged. Revanth Reddy announced the implementation of a crop insurance scheme for farmers who suffered crop losses due to unseasonal rains. Minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka announced that the government would cover the premium costs to avoid burdening the farmers. Seethakka, campaigning for Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Rae Bareli, made this announcement through a press note on Saturday and added that the government would purchase all the paddy irrespective of its condition. The GHMC and the HMWS&SB stepped in to resolve rain-related complaints and sewage overflow issues. From 2 pm to 8 pm, the Disaster Response Force received 37 complaints of which 29 had been resolved and work was under progress on the others. This included 16 complaints of tree branch fall or uprooted trees, eight of which were resolved. All 21 complaints of waterlogging were attended to.

Soldiers, borders safe under Modi: Anurag Thakur

Soldiers, borders safe under Modi: Anurag Thakur India's borders and its soldiers are safe under the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said on Saturday and alleged that the Congress' ''hand'' is always with foreign powers. Thakur made the remarks while campaigning in the Chintpurni and the Jaswan-Pragpur assembly segments of the Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency, from where he is seeking a fifth consecutive victory. He said, ''Our Army became stronger, its morale was boosted and the borders were strengthened under Modi's rule while nothing was safe during the Congress regime.'' Hitting out at the grand old party while referring to its election symbol, Thakur said, ''The Congress' 'hand' is always with foreign powers. It handed over thousands of acres of Indian land to the enemies and even today, when our soldiers are showing their bravery in Doklam, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is meeting with Chinese officials.'' He also attacked the Congress over the 2016 surgical strike. Thakur said, ''When our Army entered Pakistan and killed the terrorists, these people were demanding proof. Even today, when elections are around the corner, these people are saying that India's nuclear weapons should be abolished.'' India had conducted the surgical strike in September 2016 across the Line of Control as a response to a terror attack on an Army base in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri sector. Thakur added that even ''our daughters'' are today holding AK-47s and have the courage to ''bury'' enemies. He noted that there used to be direct interference by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir and every day there were reports of terror incidents and stone pelting but the Modi-led government removed Article 370 and instilled peace and tranquillity in the Valley. As a result, stone pelting has completely stopped and the terrorists are counting their last breaths, the minister claimed. Thakur also hit out at the state's Congress government. He alleged that the Congress formed the government in Himachal Pradesh by making false promises. Now, during the Lok Sabha elections, it is once again trying to cheat women by making them fill forms to get Rs 1,500 per month. ''Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had openly said after coming to power that 'we have formed the government by defeating 97 per cent Hindus','' Thakur claimed. ''Do they intend to cut the reservation meant for SCs, STs and OBCs and give it to Muslims, along the lines of Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh?'' The BJP leader said that 10 years ago, the country uprooted a ''corrupt and chaotic'' government and replaced it with an honest one. In these 10 years, Modi gave his 100 per cent and worked to live up to the hopes and aspirations of the people and today India has earned its place in the ''top five'', Thakur said. All this happened with the power of the public's vote, he asserted.
