Fact Check: Claim that Rahul Gandhi was Holding a Red-Covered Book of the Chinese Constitution is False

Claim: A photo of Rahul Gandhi, Congress senior leader, holding a book with a red cover is going viral on social media. The accompanying claim suggests that Gandhi is holding a copy of the original Chinese constitution, which is said to have a red cover, in contrast to the original Indian constitution, which supposedly has a blue cover.' The claim was first posted by BJP leader and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 17. Taking to X, he stated, The original copy of the Constitution of India has a blue cover. The original Chinese constitution has a red cover. Is Rahul carrying a Chinese Constitution? We need to verify. Sarma seemed to further justify his statement when he posted again on X on May 18, saying, Rahul is displaying a red Chinese constitution to the people attending his meetings. Our constitution, which is blue, includes a chapter called the Directive Principles of State Policy. This chapter makes it a sacred duty to enact a Uniform Civil Code in our country. Rahul is now opposing this. Thats why I am sure that the constitution in his hand must be a Chinese one. Sarmas first post included two distinct images: one of the Chinese constitution with a red cover and another of the Indian constitution with a blue cover. Other social media users subsequently picked up and re-shared this post. The Archived versions of such posts can be viewed here . Fact: The exact image of Gandhi with the red-covered book was found on the Press Trust of India (PTI) website (archive link ) with the caption, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi addresses during a public meeting for Lok Sabha polls, in Gadwal, Telangana, Sunday, May 5, 2024. (PTI Photo). Drawing from this, we were able to access a video from the same event in Gadwal, where Gandhi delivered his speech. He posted a livestream on YouTube (archived here ) titled Lok Sabha 2024 Campaign | Public Meeting | Gadwal, Telangana, on May 5, 2024. At the 29:17 mark, the cover of the book he was holding, clearly marked with the words The Constitution of India, is visible. While holding the book, Gandhi stated in Hindi, ...if the poor, OBCs, Dalits, and tribes in the country have gained anything, it is because of this book, our constitution. If you have employment, daily wages, public sectors, and reservations, it's all because of this book. Before its existence, India had no rights for you all. This book protects the rights of all sections of people: the OBC, minorities, tribes, and general castes. And the BJP wants to tear this book. This book is the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, B.R. Ambedkar, and Jawaharlal Nehru The reference here clearly refers to the Constitution of India. The Telangana Youth Congress also posted ( archived version) a similar photo of Gandhi holding the red-covered copy of the Indian constitution on April 29, 2024. Constitution of India with a red cover In our search for a red-covered Indian constitution book, we found a specific edition by Gopal Sankaranarayanan titled 'Constitution of India (Coat Pocket Edition),' published by Eastern Book Company (EBC). This book is available on the EBC Webstore , an online law bookstore, and the Amazon online shopping platform. We observed that this EBC edition matches the copy Gandhi was holding in the viral image. Verdict: The claim made by Hemant Biswa Sarma is false. Rahul Gandhi was seen holding a red-covered coat pocket edition of the Constitution of India, authored by Gopal Sankaranarayanan. Disclaimer: The story was originally published by Logically Facts . It has been republished by Deccan Chronicle as part of the Shakti Collective.

Telangana: Reviving sparrow songs in rural Nirmal

ADILABAD: While the chirps and chatter of birds used to provide a background score to the lives of people, especially in rural areas, across the erstwhile Adilabad district, the distinct drop in the number of sparrows has alarmed nature lovers. An once ubiquitous presence in the porches of households and on branches of trees, sparrows have now become a rare sight, bemoan locals. However, the Nirmal Mandal Samikya has launched the Back to Roots initiative to bring the olden days back apart from adding a stream of income for local tillers. Earlier, farmers would hang a small bundle of paddy from the balconies, windows and cattle sheds so that sparrows could feed on it, especially during the summer. It is also believed that waking up to the chirps of sparrows in the morning helps bring wealth into the household. Speaking to TNIE , District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) project officer P Vijaya Laxmi says they greenlit the initiative in April to ensure that the birds do not die from want of food and water, especially during the summer season. Birds can even use other parts of the crop to build nests, she explains. I watched a few YouTube videos where farmers in states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu and even some parts of Andhra Pradesh are using this system to feed the birds, especially sparrows, the project officer adds. Residents place paddy bundles around the windows in Nirmal district Vijaya Laxmi explains that farmers growing different crops are told to grow paddy in a small patch of land. After the harvest, I offer training at the Samikya office on how to pack the paddy. It is then placed near the balconies or on the exterior of houses in sheds, she says, adding that the bundles are in good demand and have been selling for `500 each. New market sensation Meanwhile, locals have started using these bundles as thoranam (traditional decorations) at the entrance of houses. Some have even placed special orders for housewarming events. Residents of Nirmal have welcomed the initiative and supporting it with their wallets. They feel that this would help the Samikya generate some revenue and in turn, help the local populace apart from adding to the fauna of the area. It must be noted that sparrows also serve as a marker for lead pollution in soil and other contaminants. Such is the craze of the paddy bundles that many were used to decorate themed polling stations in Mudhole and Lokeshwaram mandals. Several of these polling stations saw 100% voter turnout, says Vijaya Laxmi. In the near future, the DRDA plans to sell the bundles to other markets and consumers online.

Hyderabad researcher finds obesity-kidney ailment link after nine years of research

HYDERABAD: In a breakthrough for the ages, researchers from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) and the University of Hyderabad (UoH) have uncovered a correlation between obesity and kidney-related diseases. Led by Dr Anil Kumar Pasupulati, associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry at UoH, and Dr G Bhanuprakash Reddy, scientist at NIN, the study found that obesity has an adverse impact on the kidney and can go on to completely damage the organ. Dr Anil has spent over nine years on this research, starting during his PhD days. His team studied various models, literature and data to establish the correlation between obesity and kidney health. Funded by the Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB), their findings were recently published in the prestigious International Journal of Obesity, a Nature Press Journal. Using the Wistar NIN-Obese rat model and a high-fat (40%) fed mice model, the researchers observed that crucial kidney cells called podocytes exhibited cellular distortions, indicating injury due to obesity, in obese rodent models. Additionally, both models displayed severe levels of proteinuria, further highlighting the detrimental effects of obesity on kidney health. Of particular interest was the up-regulation of the WT1 (Wilms Tumor1) transcription factor in podocytes from obese rats and high-fat-fed mice. Normally associated with kidney development in embryos, WT1 expression is minimal in adults and confined to podocytes. However, in obese rodent models, the researchers observed a reactivation of WT1, coinciding with increased mobility of otherwise static podocytes. Speaking to TNIE , Dr Anil stated, During the research, we discovered that the WT1 protein was elevated in the obese mice, particularly those on a fat-rich diet, unlike the mice that were comparatively healthy and not exposed to a high-fat diet. We also observed cellular distortions in the podocytes within the nephrons of the kidneys in the obese mice. This suggests a significant correlation between WT1 levels, proteinuria and obesity, indicating that obesity can lead to kidney-related ailments in the long run. Analysing big data from patients with chronic kidney disease proved to be a formidable challenge due to the volume and time-consuming nature of the data. However, their analysis revealed elevated WT1 expression in podocytes and their precursors, providing compelling evidence that obesity contributes to kidney-related diseases.

Triumphs, Trials & Tenacity: Story of 20-year-old grandmaster

HYDERABAD: With a renewed interest in chess among the countrys youth, players from India are making a mark in the 64-square battlefield across the world. However, Indias 74th Grandmaster (GM) and Telanganas fourth in hostry, Rahul Srivasthav Peddi, will be taking on a new fight Youth Summit 2024 annually organised by the World Bank Group, scheduled for May 3031 in Washington DC, the capital city of US. I will be attending conferences and participating in case challenges, Rahul tells TNIE over the phone. He is pursuing a Bachelors in Finance and Economics at the University of Texas in Dallas. The 20-year-old started his chess journey around 14 years back at the age of six. He was introduced to this peaceful yet intellectually stimulating game, as he puts it, of 64 squares by his mother, Vijaya Lakshmi P. For her, it was a way to inculcate a new hobby as well as an escape from the outdoor activities, which she felt were not productive for her child. Furthermore, she was left impressed by Rahuls attention span at such a tender age. Every day, there used to be advertisements in newspapers to get the children enrolled. That is when I thought it was better to enrol him in a local academy instead of merely indulging in nuisance with other children. His concentration power was also remarkable. Whenever I would give him some work, he would sit until the time, sometimes for hours, he finishes it, Vijaya, a former microbiologist, tells TNIE. However, within a period of a few months, both she and her spouse, Srikanth Peddi, an engineer with a Japanese firm, noticed immense progress in their sons game. We were shocked to see that he started winning tournaments within a few months. After that, my husband, who is both a chess and cricket enthusiast, started focusing daily on his game with him. Coaches also started approaching us to make Rahul enrol in their respected academies, recollects Vijaya. But as the adage says, you cant taste success until you taste failure. The same happened with the GM, who achieved the coveted title in 2022 after breaking the 2500 (Elo points) barrier in live FIDE (International Chess Federation) ratings during the 9th Cattolica Chess Festival in Italy. Ups and downs Rahul views that the most significant hurdle in his career so far emerged during my pursuit of the GM title, right around the Covid-19 pandemic. My progress stalled, leaving me and my team perplexed. I realized that the onus for my chess growth ultimately fell on me and I began practising to improve my game, not just at the request of my parents or coach. This mindset shift was crucial for my growth in chess, he asserts, adding that getting the final norm (a high level of performance in a tournament) was a defining moment in his chess career. With a FIDE rating of 2452, he currently stands in the 1073rd spot globally and 67th in India. All these years Vijaya, who accompanied her son to the majority of the tournaments, believes that learning comes more from losing than winning. She has followed a special mantra to cope with bad days at tournaments. While travelling with him, I used to read psychology books, from which I picked up a few things. We both used to go on long walks when he had lost a certain game and discuss the plan on the way back. The 20-year-old, an alumnus of Sadhu Vaswani International School in Hyderabad, trained under Murli Krishna Gangaraju at his academy in Ponnur, Guntur, from 2011 to 2015. Later, he shifted to the RACE Academy of noted coach NVS Ramaraju who has trained both Indias second-highest-ranked player Arjun Erigaisi as well as grandmaster Dronavalli Harika in Madhapur and later with Dutch GM Sipke Ernst. Rahuls major achievements include winning the Washington Open and podium finishes at the World Open, Philadelphia Open, Asian Youth (Under 10) and Commonwealth chess championships. He used to enjoy every activity: playing games or solving puzzles. At that time only, he had this peculiar quality of playing games against two to three people at once in a blindfold format. He usually played with the older kids in the academy and gradually matured ahead of time, recounts Gangaraju while speaking to TNIE. During the pandemic, a change of mindset led Rahul to realise the significance of studies as much as chess in his life. After seeing other children focusing on their careers during the pandemic, he also made up his mind to study and got a full scholarship, his mother adds. Just like his peers, the Candidates event 2024 was special for him. For him, the most important reason was that it featured an unprecedented number of Indian players (three). He also lauded the impressive accomplishment of Tamil Nadus teenage chess prodigy, Gukesh D, who went on to win the coveted event. Request for governmental support Meanwhile, Rahul hopes that the Telangana government will also start providing support to chess players on par with Tamil Nadu. We are a state which has 7 GMs, one of the highest in the country. Growing up, I saw players from other states benefiting from coaching camps, international tournaments and financial rewards. Unfortunately, our state has lagged significantly in providing such support, he laments. He is currently training with GM Julio Sadorra of the Philippines at his university. For his mother, most of the players belong to middle-class income groups, who require the support of the state government. Rahul has also not received the GM reward (around Rs 3 lakhRs 4 lakh). Only one player has received the amount (Rs 2.5 crore awarded to V Praneeth by the previous BRS government). Like Tamil Nadu, if the Telangana government also provides proper support, more players will come up, otherwise, they will also think why to play and instead focus on their careers, stresses Vijaya.

Beating heat with green mesh canopies in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: Motorists waiting at the Liberty X Road junction traffic signal have found it easier to bear the heat thanks to a makeshift green mesh canopy installed by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) in collaboration with the Hyderabad Traffic Police. To offer relief from the harsh heat, particularly during the afternoon hours, the GHMC and the Hyderabad Traffic Police have erected green mesh shades at traffic signals to protect motorists, especially those on two-wheelers and vulnerable groups such as women and children, from the intense heat while waiting at signals. These have been installed at Liberty Junction, City Light Hotel, Ranigunj, Shapur Nagar and a few other locations in the city. The green nets, resembling pandals, cover an area of 810 metres in length and 78 metres in breadth. The structures comply with Indian Road Congress design standards, ensuring at least a five-metre vertical clearance from the road to allow large vehicles to pass through. These shades have been put up before the zebra crossing at signals. Sources said these nets have been instaled at traffic junctions where the waiting period is longer due to high traffic flow and the absence of large trees to provide shade. The nets provide relief from the scorching heat, especially for motorists enduring prolonged waits. Initially, the GHMC plans to instal these green nets at traffic junctions in 30 circles. The nets will remain in place until daytime temperatures become bearable. The traffic police have backed the initiative, noting its positive impact on motorists behaviour and adherence to traffic rules. The provision of shade encourages motorists to wait patiently at traffic signals and can help deter people from jumping signals, thereby enhancing road safety, officials said. Some motorists tend to jump signals to escape the severe heat, but the shades help mitigate this issue, they added.

Telangana phone tapping: Raghunandan asks DGP to probe Venkatram Reddys cash distribution

HYDERABAD: BJP nominee from Medak M Raghunandan Rao on Saturday lodged a formal complaint with DGP Ravi Gupta accusing BRS candidate P Venkataram Reddy of severe misconduct pertaining to phone-tapping case and sought an inquiry by a senior IPS officer. In his complaint, the BJP leader said that a series of confessions and statements from police officials reveal a pattern of illegal money collection and distribution during the Assembly elections. He said that former Task Force OSD Radha Kishan Rao, who is named in a case registered with Punjagutta police station, confessed on March 29, that he was closely associated with Venkataram Reddy and admitted to collecting large sums of money from Hyderabad-based businesspersons and transporting these funds using government vehicles to various election sites in November 2023. Raghunandan said that Task Force Sub-Inspector Sara Sai Kiran corroborated these claims in his statement under Section 161(3) Cr... on March 29, that he was tasked by Radha Kishan to distribute money on behalf of Venkataram Reddy and Raj Pushpa Constructions. With support of KCR The former MLAs complaint also included details from another confession by Radha Kishan during his custody on March 9, where he confirmed that Raj Pushpa Constructions had been funding the BRS during the elections. He alleged that Venkataram Reddy misused his position with the support of former chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and his family and asserted that no action has been taken against the former IAS officer.

Vigilance probe ordered against Kakatiya university Vice-Chancellor

HYDERABAD, WARANGAL: The state government has ordered a Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) department probe against Kakatiya University Vice-Chancellor Prof Thatikonda Ramesh. The principal secretary of the education department, Burra Venkatesham, wrote to the director general of the V&E department on Saturday, asking for an enquiry into the allegations made by faculty members against the V-C of illegally ordering transfers, unlawfully retaining terminated faculty members, making unfair academic appointments and approving fake projects. The faculty members of the university have also alleged that the V-C manipulated the system of transfers of professors and did not follow the guidelines set by the government for hiring academicians. It has come to light that, contrary to the UGC norms, 16 retired professors were appointed as adjunct faculty. Moreover, the V-C did not allegedly adhere to the minimum qualifications required while admitting candidates into PhD programmes and filled the admissions for postgraduate courses without adhering to UGC guidelines. Allegations were also made against the V-C regarding contract work allocated by him to his loyalists in exchange for bribes and that he discriminated against women in the recruitment process. Meanwhile, the general secretary of Kakatiya University Teachers Association, Prof Dr Estari Mamidala, said that as per UGC norms, for a V-C to be appointed, a professor must have at least 10 years of experience. However, the previous BRS government appointed Prof Thatikonda as the V-C even though he did not have a decade of experience, he added. The general secretary alleged that teachers, students and non-teaching employees have faced various problems due to the rule of an unqualified V-C.

Jaw broken, girls harassed: Indian students in Bishkek live in fear

HYDERABAD: Locked inside his university hostel at Kyrgyzstans capital Bishkek, where the gates were shut and the lights were turned off by the administration so they could stay safe, a Telangana-based medical student, Fayzan, told TNIE on Saturday that although the violence was temporarily curbed, a mob had openly sent out a warning to the Indians and Pakistanis that there would be another attack in the night. India advises its students in Bishkek to stay indoors after mob violence On the night of May 17, an angry mob of locals entered two universities in the capital city, broke the windows of the hostels and targeted foreign nationals, especially Indian and Pakistani nationals. They attacked foreign students and misbehaved with girls. An acquaintance suffered a broken jaw and a few others sustained minor injuries, said Fayzan. Following the mob violence, the Indian embassy released a statement that the situation is presently calm and advised all students to stay indoors and contact the Mission in case of any problems. However, many Indian students that TNIE had contacted expressed fear as locals were circulating hate messages on TikTok and other social media platforms. The driver of a taxi I had previously travelled in sent me a video of the mob violence and threatened to beat me as well, said a student from Uttar Pradesh. While students living in university hostels shared that there were local police and Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) deployed outside the campus, those living in private accommodations do not have the same kind of security. Students living in flats have been asked to not step out of their accommodations. In case of an emergency, they have been advised to carry their visas and passports, said a student from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, who did not want to be named. However, that does not make any difference. The mob does not look into the passports before attacking, his friend added. The violence, which started following an alleged altercation between the locals and Egyptians on May 13, has led to a series of incidents where foreign nationals have been targeted. While university officials are ensuring that the students in campus are safe, those living outside the campus are demanding police security and provision of essentials, said Dr Apurva, the national convenor of the All Indian Medical Students Association Foreign Medical Students Wing (AIMSA-FMSW). Another member of the AIMSA-FMSW, Dr Vasundhara said, We are concerned as we have been unable to reach out to a few of the Indian students. We are trying to keep in touch with as many students as possible and check in on their safety. Amidst the tense situation, the student from Uttar Pradesh told TNIE, A couple of Indian students who stay elsewhere in the country, have left Kyrgyzstan fearing violence. They are not in Bishkek, but are afraid and have taken the road to leave the country. Even as the students are expecting that the situation would most likely be back to normal in a few days, they insist, Only if the Indian government and agencies take a major action or put pressure on the Kyrgyzstan government, will the situation change. Else, we are worried that this might repeat.

Voter turnout less than my expectations in Central Kashmir: JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah

Voter turnout less than my expectations in Central Kashmir: JKNC chief Farooq Abdullah Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) Chief Farooq Abdullah expressed concern over the low voting percentage in Central Kashmir, saying that he expected around 70 per cent polling percentage in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to ANI on Saturday, the JKNC chief said, I expected the percentage to be 70 per cent. I don't know the reason why it was so low. People are so eager to express themselves and send their representatives to the Parliament. Our children are taking drugs. An entire generation is in danger. The percentage is less than my expectations. It should have been 70 per cent, Abdullah further said. Jammu and Kashmir recorded low voter turnouts at 38.49 in the recently concluded fourth phase of Lok Sabha polls. The fourth phase of polling for Lok Sabha polls on May 13 in 96 constituencies saw a voter turnout of 69.16 per cent, the Election Commission said on Friday. It said 69.58 per cent of male voters, 68.73 per cent of female voters, and 34.23 per cent of third-gender individuals exercised their franchise. Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest voter turnout, with a total voter turnout of 80.66 per cent. West Bengal recorded the second-highest voter turnout at 80.22 per cent. Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar also recorded relatively low voter turnouts at 58.22, and 58.21 per cent, respectively. Voting was held in 96 Lok Sabha seats in the fourth phase, out of which 25 were from Andhra Pradesh, 17 from Telangana, 13 from Uttar Pradesh, 11 from Maharashtra, eight each from Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, five from Bihar, four each from Jharkhand and Odisha, and one from Jammu and Kashmir. The voting in Baramulla is set for May 20 while the Anantnag-Rajouri seat will vote on May 25. In the electoral battleground of Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, the upcoming Lok Sabha elections for Phase 5 present a compelling tripartite contest. Omar Abdullah, representing the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), faces off against Fayaz Ahmad Mir of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Sajjad Gani Lone from the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference (JKPC), allied with the NDA. Notably, the BJP is not contesting from any of Jammu and Kashmir's three Lok Sabha seats--Srinagar, Baramulla, and Anantnag. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election, the BJP had six candidates in the fray in Jammu and Kashmir but failed to win a single seat in Kashmir. Voting for the Udhampur and Jammu seats concluded on April 19 and 26 respectively while in Srinagar, voting was concluded on May 13. The counting of votes will be held on June 4. (ANI)

NETA NATTER | REVANTH BRINGS BACK 18-HOUR WORK DAYS

Bureaucrats in Telangana state are being kept on their toes by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy who is fast being viewed as a workaholic with him making it clear that it is 18 hours of work a day or else. After the hectic election campaign, there were some in the Secretariat who hoped that Revanth would take a break of sorts but that was not to be. Taking just a single days break on May 14, after polling ended on May 13, the Chief Minister was back at work on May 15 and the hopes among bureaucrats and officials in the Secretariat that since the election code will be in force until counting of votes on June 4, the Chief Minister could probably go easy, were dashed with Revanth back to holding review meetings with several departments each day. This was enough to force some bureaucrats who had scheduled vacations to cancel their plans and return to work, with several recalling how Revanth, at his very first meeting with district collectors, police superintendents and secretaries of all departments in December last, made it clear that he would work 18 hours a day and expected the same from officials. KTR GETS A FACE FULL OF CONFETTI Politicians are tough nuts to crack. Very little fazes them, given the aplomb with which they confront their opponents, or issues, whether such issues are based on facts or not. But even these tough guys sometimes are forced to throw in the towel. For BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, such a moment came during a campaign rally in Huzurabad for BRS Karimnagar candidate B. Vinod Kumar. It wasnt some tougher guy who did this to KTR but a paper confetti gun operator who, in his enthusiasm, kept blasting away load after load of pink paper strips aimed at him. This finally forced KTR to beg the person doing so to stop, saying, He gave himself this job of repeatedly blasting in my face. Please stop, I am begging you, and I promise that you will be paid your charges. ELECTIONS USHER IN THE BLACK MAGICIANS For most part, elections, particularly ones with long-drawn campaigns, can get tiring, especially for those in the fray. With victory being the ultimate price, the point becomes that winning is all that matters and there is never any dearth of mumbo jumbo allegations doing the rounds. And so it turns out that the hot topic in Tadepalligudem is that the two contenders in the fray, belonging to the YSRC and the Jana Sena, resorted to invoking unseen forces using black magic to weaken each other. Whispers did the rounds after Jana Senas Bolisetty Srinivas would find himself out of steam at the end of the day and that this was attributed to YSRCs Katta Satyanarayana unleashing some black magic on his opponent. So, it was the turn of gossip-mongers to say that when Satayanarayana began exhibiting the same symptoms at the end of the day during the campaign that the same forces were somehow used against him by the Jana Sena candidate. For all one knows, it could just have been the hot summer sun that laid a couple of leaders in AP low during the campaigning but gossip is a hard mill to put brakes on to. TWO STATES, TWO ELECTIONS DOES NOT EQUAL TWO VOTES Two states, two votes? It is possible that this was a reason why the turnout of voters in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad was poor, rued BJP state president and Union minister G. Kishan Reddy the other day. His reasoning was that since Andhra Pradesh also went to polls to pick a new Legislative Assembly the same day, people who were voters in that state left for Andhra Pradesh, leaving their votes unused in Telangana. But when it was pointed out that having two votes in two places is illegal, Kishan Reddy sought to extricate himself with a long-winded explanation of how Andhra Pradesh voters may have gone to their native places to watch the polling trends as they have voting rights in the twin cities and Telangana state. CONTENDERS MOMENTS OF UNEXPECTED DRAMA The local election season has turned into a spectacle for the community, with Pithapuram district in AP taking the lead in entertainment value. Both candidates vying for leadership in Pithapuram have inadvertently become the stars of the show. Pawan Kalyan, representing the Jana Sena and contesting from Pithapuram, made headlines when he requested a printout from election officials after casting his vote, resulting in a viral video of the incident. Similarly, Vanga Geeta, YSRC contender from Pithapuram, had her own moment of unexpected drama when a stranger approached her to advocate voting for the glass symbol of the Jana Sena. Geeta was not stumped at this but these interactions have gone viral with video clips doing the rounds furiously. YSRCS HOPES GETTING DASHED SLOWLY Pre-poll bluster has a shelf life. Once the voting is over, leaders have nothing more to say to one another and have little to do other than twiddle their thumbs and wait for the results. Two such leaders in Andhra Pradesh minister R.K. Roja and former minister P. Anil Kumar Yadav who constantly made news before the voting on May 13, have gone silent despite their established image as rabble-rousers for their party. While Yadav hasnt said much other than claiming that the police helped the TD voters during polling, and Roja alleging that her own YSRC workers worked against her in Nagari constituency, these two have, for now, appear to have decided to lie low, given the popular perception that their party, the YSRC, may not have found favour among voters this time round. T'gana govt to hold consultations on damaged barrages of Kaleswaram project

T'gana govt to hold consultations on damaged barrages of Kaleswaram project Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Saturday decided to hold consultations with the irrigation officials and also discuss in the state cabinet on the future course of action with regard to the damaged structures of Kaleshwaram project. Reddy, who held a meeting with ministers and officials, enquired about the recommendations made by the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) in the interim report on Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project and the measures needed to be taken, an official release said. The NDSA has recently submitted an interim report on the repairs and temporary restoration of the damaged Medigadda and Sundilla barrages which are considered the most important structures in the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation scheme. State Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy explained the recommendations made in the interim report to the CM and the ministers. ''The NDSA made it clear in 2019 that danger is lurking around the barrages and the risk factor is not ruled out even after the repairs and restoration measures are taken up at the damaged structures,'' it said. In view of the monsoon season beginning in a month, the chief minister said the measures to be taken in the meantime will have to be discussed in the cabinet meeting, it said. ''The government will take a decision whether to repair the damaged structures or any alternative measures (to be considered) in consultation with the irrigation department,'' it said. The chief minister said these crucial issues could not be discussed in detail since the cabinet meeting proposed to be conducted on Saturday had to be deferred as the requisite nod from the Election Commission, in view of the model code of conduct for Lok Sabha polls, was not received. The CM said a field level visit and inspection of the Medigadda and Sundilla barrages and the pump houses needs to be conducted soon. The damage to the Medigadda barrage last year during the previous BRS regime was a major issue in the November 2024 Assembly polls, with the Congress and BJP attacking the BRS then. The BRS says damage to the projects is not uncommon and that the government should see that the farmers continue to reap benefit from the project.

Ethanol plant proposal in tiger corridor area cause for concern

Hyderabad: The tiger corridor forests in KB Asifabad district, home to several tigers, including cubs, are under potential threat from an industrial project that is expected to come up nearby in Metpalle of Kagaznagar mandal of the district. The area allocated for an ethanol manufacturing plant, along with a co-generation power generation unit, it is learnt, was next to the tiger corridor and the proposed site for the plant was being used by tigers and leopards, as well as other wildlife. The company planning to set up the plant, Aithanoli Cibus Products, has an environmental clearance from the Union ministry of environment and forests. However, a recent proposal by the state forest department to declare the forest patches being used by tigers as a conservation reserve has raised questions over whether work on the ethanol plant can be taken up unless clearance from the National Board Wildlife (NBWL) is obtained for the project. The forest department had said that at a meeting of the State Board of Wildlife in February this year that a decision was taken to notify the tiger corridor areas connecting the tiger reserves of Kawal in Telangana with Tadoba in Maharashtra as a conservation reserve. This reserve covers around 1,492 sq km in 113 blocks in the district. The proposed site of the plant is just 63 metres from the conservation reserve boundary in the Garlapet reserve forest block that was earlier approved as a tiger corridor area by the National Tiger Conservation Authority. Sources said that as recently as in January this year, tigers and leopards were recorded in the land at the proposed ethanol plant site, and that it was imperative that a wildlife mitigation plan be put in place before any work could begin on the plant. This area is also home to a tigress and her cubs. Sources saying that tiger movement was recorded in the area for five years in the forest block and the adjacent project site as well as a canal nearby. In the absence of a mitigation plan, the proposed plant could prove to be a significant hindrance to the efforts to protect tigers, and it was quite possible that the disturbance could push the big cats into human habitations, thereby leading to serious conflicts with people, the sources explained. It was learnt that forest department officials in the district had taken this aspect to the notice of their seniors at Aranya Bhavan in Hyderabad, the department headquarters. As per the Central guidelines on such issues, no work can begin until the required wildlife protection, clearances and mitigation plans are approved by the National Board for Wildlife, the sources said.

Telangana HC: No Need for Central Nod for Forest Land Diversion Before 1980

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court has made it clear that forest land, which had been diverted for non-forest purposes before the commencement of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980, does not require the approval of the Union government to denotify them from the reserved forest category. A division bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Anil Kumar Jukanti made this clear while dealing with a 2009 petition filed by the NGO Forum for Better Hyderabad, which challenged diverting about 2,400 acres to non-forest purposes without de-notifying it and obtaining permission from the Centre. This land was part of the 4,067 acres of forest in Imarat Kancha, Maheswaram mandal in Rangareddy district. It was purchased by the forest department in 1956 from the estate of HEH the Nizam and was later notified under the AP Forest Act, 1967. The petitioners challenged the alienation of the land by the then state governments between 2000 and 2008 to companies like Indu Tech Zone, Gitanjali Gems, HCL Infosystems, Aga Khan Academy, Astra Microwave systems, Kernex Microsystems, Ananth Technologies, Brahmani Infratech, AP Housing Board and others. The petition was heard recently by the division bench. Senior counsel Gandra Mohan Rao argued that the forest land needed prior permission of the Union government if used for non-forest purposes. Md. Imran Khan, additional advocate general (AAG), argued that the land was used for non-forest purposes even in the 1960s and there was no necessity to take permission from the Centre under the Forest (Conversation) Act, 1980, which came into force later. Khan brought to the notice of the court the clarification of the Union ministry of environment and forests when the state government had sought Centres permission to de-reserve 3.1 hectares of forest land in the Sirchelma reserve forest block in Adilabad district. He said that in view of the expansion of the city and the fact that several industries had come up, the courts intervention at this point was unwarranted. The bench dismissed the petition and observed that there was delay and latches in the public interest litigation as well and the court could not disturb the third-party interest created on account of delay.

Soldiers, borders safe under Modi: Anurag Thakur

Soldiers, borders safe under Modi: Anurag Thakur India's borders and its soldiers are safe under the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said on Saturday and alleged that the Congress' ''hand'' is always with foreign powers. Thakur made the remarks while campaigning in the Chintpurni and the Jaswan-Pragpur assembly segments of the Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency, from where he is seeking a fifth consecutive victory. He said, ''Our Army became stronger, its morale was boosted and the borders were strengthened under Modi's rule while nothing was safe during the Congress regime.'' Hitting out at the grand old party while referring to its election symbol, Thakur said, ''The Congress' 'hand' is always with foreign powers. It handed over thousands of acres of Indian land to the enemies and even today, when our soldiers are showing their bravery in Doklam, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is meeting with Chinese officials.'' He also attacked the Congress over the 2016 surgical strike. Thakur said, ''When our Army entered Pakistan and killed the terrorists, these people were demanding proof. Even today, when elections are around the corner, these people are saying that India's nuclear weapons should be abolished.'' India had conducted the surgical strike in September 2016 across the Line of Control as a response to a terror attack on an Army base in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri sector. Thakur added that even ''our daughters'' are today holding AK-47s and have the courage to ''bury'' enemies. He noted that there used to be direct interference by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir and every day there were reports of terror incidents and stone pelting but the Modi-led government removed Article 370 and instilled peace and tranquillity in the Valley. As a result, stone pelting has completely stopped and the terrorists are counting their last breaths, the minister claimed. Thakur also hit out at the state's Congress government. He alleged that the Congress formed the government in Himachal Pradesh by making false promises. Now, during the Lok Sabha elections, it is once again trying to cheat women by making them fill forms to get Rs 1,500 per month. ''Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had openly said after coming to power that 'we have formed the government by defeating 97 per cent Hindus','' Thakur claimed. ''Do they intend to cut the reservation meant for SCs, STs and OBCs and give it to Muslims, along the lines of Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh?'' The BJP leader said that 10 years ago, the country uprooted a ''corrupt and chaotic'' government and replaced it with an honest one. In these 10 years, Modi gave his 100 per cent and worked to live up to the hopes and aspirations of the people and today India has earned its place in the ''top five'', Thakur said. All this happened with the power of the public's vote, he asserted.

Poll Panel Empowered To Issue SOPs During MCC

Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court made it clear that prescribing the standard operating procedure (SOPs) for seizing unaccounted money for model code of conduct violations by the Election Commission of India (ECI) did not amount to violation of fundamental rights. Justice C.V. Bhaskar Reddy has said that in view of the powers being conferred under Article 324 of the Constitution and the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1951, the ECI can issue any directions to ensure free and fair election and checking poll-related malpractices. Justice Reddy was dealing with a petition filed by Neena Kamlesh Shah, whose cash of Rs 3.04 crore was reportedly seized by Madugulapally police of Nalgonda district on October 15, 2023. During the seizure, the petitioner was not present in the car and the drivers were transporting the money to Chennai to pay salaries to her employees. Police had registered an FIR against the drivers and, after obtaining necessary permission, deposited the amount with the nodal officer. The money was handed over to the Income-tax department and notices were issued. Challenging the FIR and the seizure, Neena Shah approached the High Court, which made it clear that the money was unaccounted for, and rejected the petition seeking to quash the FIR.

Heavy rain forecast for state in last week of May

Visakhapatnam : A low pressure area is likely to form over southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22. It is likely to move initially northeast-wards and concentrate into a depression over central parts of Bay of Bengal around May 24. It is too early to assess its path and forecast whether it will intensify into a deep depression and cyclone. But the system will bring in heavy rains throughout the last week of May over north coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema, said senior scientist at IMD Amaravati Dr. S. Karunasagar. A source said conditions are favourable for further intensification of the system. However, as there are dissimilarities between models and forecasts, it would be difficult to say further without more clarity. Karunasagar said the system is likely to propel the southwest monsoon towards the Kerala coast. The monsoon might touch Kerala on June 1 as per the usual schedule and Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh on June 5 or June 6. Currently, a trough from south Chhattisgarh to Comorin area is running to south interior Karnataka across Telangana and Rayalaseema 3.1 km above mean sea level. The cyclonic circulation over Rayalaseema and adjoining north Tamil Nadu extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level has become less marked. Under these two systems, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty wind with speed reaching 3040 kmph are likely at isolated places over north coastal and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema from Sunday to May 22.

BJP MLAs Urge Telangana CM for Quick Resolution on Paddy Procurement Issues

BJP MLAs Urge Telangana CM for Quick Resolution on Paddy Procurement Issues Alleging that the delay in the paddy procurement process has caused a lot of hardship for the farmers, BJP MLAs in Telangana on Saturday urged Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to resolve the problems at the earliest and also pay Rs 500 bonus on Minimum Support Price (MSP) as promised by the ruling Congress. The BJP MLAs met the chief minister at the Secretariat and submitted a memorandum to him with their demands. Pointing out that the paddy procurement centres were started in the state 45 days ago, the BJP MLAs said the farmers had to wait for weeks together for their produce to be quantified in view of the scarcity of gunny bags, workers and also lorries. While the harvested paddy is getting damaged due to unseasonal rains before it is transported to procurement centres, the paddy is also getting damaged at the centres as proper arrangements are not made to stock them, they alleged. The paddy damaged due to rain is being rejected and millers are reducing the quantity, citing dampness, they said. The farmers have protested in some places in the state over these problems and it is the failure of the state government, the MLAs charged. The concerned officials and ministers have been indifferent to the farmers' problems, they alleged. The BJP MLAs, led by the party's floor leader in Assembly Alleti Maheshwar Reddy, demanded that the chief minister resolve the farmers' problems and also ensure payment of Rs 500 bonus on MSP. They also sought the state government to implement its promises of Rs two lakh farm loan waiver, payment of Rs 15,000 per acre to farmers and tenant farmers and Rs 12,000 per annum to farm workers.

Nadda rejects opposition claims, says BJP will retain North in LS polls and will be ahead of Congress in South

Nadda rejects opposition claims, says BJP will retain North in LS polls and will be ahead of Congress in South BJP president JP Nadda has hit out over south mein saaf and north mein haaf' jibe at the party by some opposition parties and asserted that the BJP will retain its Lok Sabha seats in north India while having a lead over Congress in the southern states. In an interview with ANI, Nadda expressed confidence of the BJP winning the Odisha assembly polls and also forming a government in Andhra Pradesh with its allies. He said the BJP will sweep Lok Sabha polls in Odisha and will achieve a landslide victory with its allies in parliamentary polls in Andhra Pradesh. The BJP is in alliance with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Jana Sena Party (JSP) in Andhra Pradesh. Nadda said the BJP will sweep the northern parts of the country in Lok Sabha polls as it did in the 2019 elections. We are keeping ourselves intact in the North and will retain (tally in) Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal, Jammu, Haryana, and Delhi, Nadda said. In Andhra Pradesh, we are going to form a government and in the parliamentary election, BJP and TDP are going to sweep. In Telangana, we are getting more than double (of the seats won last time), and in Tamil Nadu also we are getting a good start. We are also opening our account in Kerala and will maintain our seat share in Karnataka, Nadda. The BJP had done very well in Karnataka in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and won 25 of 28 seats. Asked if BJP will retain an equal number of seats, Nadda said they would get 25 and plus, minus one seat might happen. That's why in the South as well, we will have a lead over Congress in the tally. And in East as well we will maintain our tally Nadda said. Leaders of Congress and some other opposition parties have taken south mein saaf and north mein haaf' (wiped out in the south, half in the north) jibes at BJP, claiming that the party will not perform well in the Lok Sabha polls. Asked if Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is allergic to him and Home Minister Amit Shah, Nadda said she has sensed that Bengal is getting out of her hands. She is allergic to everyone, this time Mamataji has sensed that Bengal is getting out of her hands. We will win a good number of seats in Bengal. They (TMC) will be in a minority, we will have a majority, Nadda said. We will form government in Odisha and BJP will have a landslide victory in the parliamentary election, Nadda said in response to a question. Asked about BJD leader VK Pandian's remarks that BJP does not have a CM face against Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Nadda said the party did not have a CM face in states such as Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and emerged victorious in assembly polls. We did not have in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and in Chhattisgarh, he said, adding that the party did not take long to decide its CM candidates after victory in assembly polls. On poll-related violence in West Bengal, Nadda said law and order is a state subject. We (the centre) can support them but Mamata Banerjee's intentions are not clear. Her intention is dubious. He slammed the West Bengal CM over the Sandeshkhali violence and accused her of being silent. She was silent on the case of Sheikh Shahjahan, the High Court had to give the inquiry to the Central Bureau of Investigation. Women were shouting and you even didn't bother, he said. Asked about the allegations of Mamata Banerjee that the Sandeshkhali incident was a conspiracy of the BJP, Nadda said, Dishonest administrator, dishonest politician. If I'm the CM and a case like this comes to me, I'll say that I'll investigate into this. I'll go into the details of it. Why was she quiet at first and later she blamed the BJP. She compromised with the nation for a vote bank. TMC is providing shelter to infiltrators and giving them ID cards and ration cards, making them voters, this is anti-national activitiy They also give protection to such people, Nadda added. BJP President further accused Mamata Banerjee of spreading misinformation regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act. She is spreading misinformation about CAA. She's doing anti-national things. BJP will win maximum MP seats in Telangana: Kishan Reddy

Hyderabad: Union Tourism Minister and Telangana BJP State president G Kishan Reddy here on Saturday said the party would be winning the highest number of MP seats this time in the State. Interacting with party leaders and followers in view of Warangal-Khammam-Nalgonda graduates MLC constituency elections at Yadadri bypass road, he said the BJP won the same elections in united Andhra Pradesh and a favourable atmosphere was prevailing for BJP this time in Telangana. Moreover, intellectuals and educated people were supporting BJP, he said, adding the Congress came to power in Telangana because of anti-incumbency against the BRS during Assembly elections conducted in November 2023. Chances of the BRS MLAs and MLCs to continue in the party were remote given the present political scenario. Former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao was not in position to protect his own party MLAs but he sought votes during Lok Sabha elections. The people defeated the BRS only because of its inappropriate governance and family politics, he said. People are ready to vote against the Congress in any elections to be held in the State, Kishan Reddy said. He alleged the Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy was non-committal over implementing promises given to people during the Assembly elections. We will continue to fight on peoples issues in future, he said, stating that the BJP has become an alternative for BRS and Congress and it would continue to remain as an alternative in future as well and called upon the cadre to strive for the partys victory in the elections.

Handcrafted elegance

HYDERABAD: Jewellery is an expression of personal choice and elegance. Adorning yourself with the finest pieces enhances your outfit and showcases the sophistication you always desired. To help you find the perfect jewellery, Sansa organised a pop-up event, Sparklefest Soiree, which highlighted exquisite craftsmanship and bespoke designs. From diamond necklaces to redefined chains and pendants, this event epitomised summer elegance. Collaborating with brands like Veoce, Taamara, and others, this pop-up was truly worth visiting. During our tour of the collection, we had the opportunity to speak with Chandana Shailendren, the mastermind behind the handcrafted jewellery, who shared insights about the event. Explaining the purpose of the pop-up show, Chandana says, This has been planned especially for Akshaya Tritiya and Mothers Day. We have collaborated with other brands and plan to host these shows more frequently now. Collaborating with each brand and organising the event might have been challenging. Chandana shared, It is interesting to see multiple products in one place. We are known as a bespoke jewellery brand, and our collaborations are with people seeking bespoke jewellery. It creates brand awareness. Pop-up shows are about meaningful associations, combining jewellery, clothes, and artsy items. Its always fun and empowering for brands of resonance. Discussing the journey of designing jewellery pieces, she says, It has been a long journey. I have been in this field for about 17 years, and we started our retail brand in 2019. We were initially on Road No. 8 in Banjara Hills, and now we have expanded to a larger store on the main street of Banjara Hills. Chandana elaborated on the evolution of jewellery design, There have been many changes. When I started, it was mostly about handcrafted jewellery; we did not have machine-made jewellery. We focus on keeping that art form alive. Machine-made jewellery is ubiquitous, but our brand emphasises handcrafted jewellery. We promote various artisans from across the state and country, preserving the art forms related to jewellery. Regarding the rewarding journey of discovering artisans, she said, It has been a major trial-and-error process. I learned my craft from artisans, working with them for about 10 years. Its not about formal training but hands-on experience. Finding artisans who align with my vision is tricky because they come from remote areas and require training. We groom and teach them to work with an organisation. Bringing them into mainstream jobs offers stability and encourages them to pass down their skills to future generations. Many artisans do not want their children to continue in this field. My goal is to change this mindset and show them the stability and value of this work. Sansa is also part of CII, working on tourism and culture in Telangana, and we are aiming to do significant work in this area. The store also features lab-grown diamonds, with Chandana explaining, Most of our pieces are personalised. We have karigars working here and a retail section with ready-to-buy items. We offer many customisable pieces on display. Customers can choose a piece and ask us to personalise it. Chandana attaches sentimental value to each piece, saying, Jewellery is often made to be passed down through generations or for special occasions like weddings. We take this sentiment seriously. When a customer comes to us, its not just about creating a piece but understanding their story. The conversations become meaningful, and the experience is memorable. We involve customers in the process from sketching to completion, making them a part of the story behind the jewellery. Our brand also empowers women, with most of our team being women. Its beautiful to see how efficient we can be together. I am very passionate about what I do and want everyone to be involved. Looking ahead, Chandana shares, Sansas vision is to set up multiple stores across the country. We plan to open two more stores this year in Hyderabad, followed by Chennai and Bengaluru. We aim to be visible in metro areas before expanding further.
