'Accidental' shooter Sarabjot on course to Paris Olympics

BHOPAL: He calls himself an accidental shooter. If anything, Sarabjot Singh's life resembles that of blackjack, a game of chance. Shooting is no doubt a game of skills but until he started, it was not even part of his lexicon. The 22-year-old had no inkling about the sport until the Summer of 2016 when he was 16. His friends joined a Summer Camp in school and he was tempted to follow them. Until then, Sarabjot was dabbling with football. In fact, sport was not a meaningful pursuit for him. Some of my friends joined shooting and I wanted to join them, he told his daily after topping the Olympic Shooting Trial (T4 qualification round) at the MP Shooting Academy here on Saturday. With the day's outcome, he has virtually sealed a Paris berth in the men's 10m air pistol category. Sarabjot's father, a farmer in a village (Dhin) near Ambala, did not agree with the son and naturally said no. But fortunately for Sarabjot, the school chairman encouraged him to join shooting. That changed my life, he said. I am an accidental shooter, Sarabjot confessed. I started to shoot in 2016 in school during a camp. My friends were shooting and I wanted to join them. But my father did not agree. Then the chairman of the school asked me to shoot. Then I won a silver medal in a district competition. After that, I started to take the sport seriously. The next big task was finding a coach. It was not easy either. Sarabjot's uncle then spoke to him about coach Abhishek Rana, who is considered very good. I went to Abhishek sir and I have been training with him for the last eight years. I won a bronze medal in the youth nationals. In 2019, I won my first international medal in the junior World Cup. In 2021, I graduated to seniors and the initial stages were not good... but here I am now. Coming from a family of farmers, Sarabjot knows how to work on the field. Till February, he did not even own a car. I used to commute on a bus or other modes of transport that was convenient for me, he said. Around 6.30 AM, his father used to drop him off at the bus stand and he used to commute for 45-50 minutes to reach the centre. He would spend the whole day there before returning in the evening. Sarabjot used to take a bus to the centre from Dhin and then take the bus back. He used to have home-cooked food and his mother used to pack lunch for him. Food is important for a sportsperson and that helped him do well, Abhishek said. Now he owns a car, thanks to the prize money he got from various sources. Sarabjot, who earned the quota for the country last year, felt competition in India is much tougher. It's tougher in India than abroad, he said. Here you have to shoot somewhere above 580 and hope you win. But abroad, it is different 570 or so is good. There is pressure in the trials and this is the case for every athlete. And most think about how to win a quota or top the table. However, my focus was to improve my technique. But I felt some pressure in the last series. It was not there the whole time but I think that was natural. To calm the mind, he has a psychologist. Shivam sir is there and I have been working with him for the last year or so, he said. That helps him to calm him down to recover mentally as well. There is no one in the team that he looks up to. But outside, he talks about Abhinav Bindra quite reverentially. He (Bindra) is the only one. I had met him during an event and what he said I liked, said Sarabjot. Someone asked a question to him 'what is that zone in shooting?'. He said there is no such thing as a shooting zone or anything. Then I realised that in shooting, there was nothing called a zone. Earlier, I thought there was a 'shooting zone'! he said, accompanied by a laugh. The 22-year-old has a slew of support staff working with him too. He has a trainer to look after his fitness, a physio and a psychologist all provided by Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ). Now, I will take some rest, then will go to the Munich World Cup and then go to France, he said. The coach also shared a few words on his ward and their training rituals too. Earlier, there used to be more tours but now we have changed a bit. We train in Ambala more. Our earlier routine was quite successful, he said. The coach also felt that whatever coaching he had been doing was in Ambala and that helped. That's why we thought we would train there. Also, whenever he is at a national camp or competes abroad, I speak to him whenever he wants my advice. We discuss plans and carry on. The coach has never accompanied the athlete anywhere abroad and even for Paris, he would abide by the decision taken by the National Rifle Association of India, the governing body of the sport in the country. But for both, the focus is the Olympics now.

Only 10 Noorjahan Mango trees left in MP, says scientist

Bhopal: Noorjahan mango tree species, the yield of which weighs up to 4.5 kg each, is on the verge of extinction, a scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) has indicated. Dr R K Yadav, scientist and head of the local KVK, on Friday, disclosed to this newspaper that only ten Noorjahan mango trees survive in Alirajpur district in Madhya Pradesh now. Only ten Noorjahan mango trees are surviving in the Katthiwada block of Alirajpur district now. The KVK of Alirajpur has undertaken a project to conserve and revive the tree species, Dr Yadav said. According to him, of the ten surviving Noorjahan mango variety trees, seven are found in the farms of two brothers of Katthiwada, Shivraj Singh and Bharat Singh. Similarly, while one tree is found in the village of Kali Khetra under Jobat, grown by the local farmer Pradip Singh in his agriculture field, another tree is grown by a farmer, Yuvraj Singh, in Chhota Undan village near the district headquarters of Alirajpur. The other tree is grown in the palace of the erstwhile royal family of Alirajpur. According to him, the KVK, Alirajpur, last year initiated an effort to create two mother trees of the variety by adopting the grafting method. But, both the trees were electrocuted after coming in contact with transmission wires. The tree variety yields mangoes weighing up to 4.5 kg each. Last year, a Noorjahan mango weighing 3.5 kg was auctioned at Rs 5,000 in the market, Dr Yadav said. The mango variety grows in tropical climates on sandy soil. We have a plan to grow around 200 mango trees of the variety in the coming four years by adopting tissue culture technology, he added.

Renewed faith propels Anjum to rediscover her craft

BHOPAL: Make it thy business to know thyself, which is the most difficult lesson in the world Miguel de Cerventes. Out of all the scars, the one in the head can be the scariest. Merciless and invisible, they can flirt and play peek-a-boo with destiny; it can torment, tear one apart or tease with your emotions. It can drive one to desperation too. There is no discrimination between a king and a pauper nor a champion and an upstart too. Shooter Anjum Moudgil reflected on those harrowing times when she had to step back to know thyself, when she had to control her mind. It was not easy after she was dropped from the India team for the World Championships and Asian Games last year. She lost interest in the sport. Thats the phase she dreaded. I stopped enjoying (the sport), she said after ensuring a second-finish behind world record holder Sift Kaur Samra in 50m rifle 3 positions (T4 qualification round) here on Friday. Now, shes all set for a place in the Paris Olympics team. Somewhere amid the cacophony of securing quota for the Olympics, the joy of shooting just faded into the darkness and settled in the abyss of Anjums mind. Shooting was not alone. Another joy of life painting too had deserted her. Thats when she realised she had to step back. She had to rediscover her love for the sport and reset the mind. Rekindle the passion. She did that with a little help from friends and mental trainers. I started to train on my own and went out alone and played competitions when I was not with the Indian team, the 30-year-old said. Figuring all of that out and working on my mental health. Everything worked together. That has made me stronger post Tokyo. It is good to have a team with you. But when you are alone, you can figure out mistakes and I think I am a person who would love to stay alone and I enjoy my company, she said. I think that was something that was lost in the chaos of competitions to secure a quota and being with the team. I had to rediscover what I am and what I like. And work on my mistakes in technique and my position. I was training alone and competing also. It is so important to work on my mindset. It really helped. When the teams for the Worlds and Asian Games were decided, she was left out. The period after that was one of the worst. Her profound words reflected the turmoil that was within. I think when you are just trying too hard to get a result but you are not basically enjoying the process... thats when you are tired. Because its not fun to do it, but you want the result. You want to come in the team, you want the medal, she said, sounding philosophical. When you enjoy the process, thats the time you can get the result. And I was lost in what I wanted rather than what should be done. I was wanting to be in the team for the Worlds and the Asian Games so much that I was not enjoying shooting. I just wanted the result. If the result is not coming then it wont look good. So it was too negative for me. I had made that scenario for myself. I was just too tired to keep pushing myself, not getting the results. At the same time I had the best people around me. I cut off from all the people who were not really very positive for me and had very positive people with me who supported me, understood what I am going through. The days were trying but not scary. Its part of the journey. And I might have gone through this (phase) post Tokyo for some time. You just have to start over. Like a beginner. Thats the thing I did. Transitioning from negative to positive and demotivation to motivation was the process that brought her back. I have been working with a person. They are based in Bengaluru and have been working with them for the last two years now. When I was World No 1, thats when I started. Because I knew I was World No 1, but I was not accepting that I was World No 1. I was like its by mistake that I became No. 1. I mean everyone used to tell me to believe that you were good. I had issues with believing that I was good. Thats when I thought the only thing I was not doing was mental training. So I thought it was the best time to start (April 2022). However, before the Tokyo Olympics, Anjum seemed different. I think before Tokyo also, my journey had seen a lot of ups and downs. One year, I would be nowhere and then come back. Also I studied sports psychology. But more than that, I have had experience of 10 to 12 years and I knew that the kids in the team were young. Aishwarya, Manu, Divyansh, Sourav... And they were shooting so good before Tokyo. So somewhere I was like, if they dont shoot well, I know they will break down. It will be so difficult for them to handle. As shooters themselves, they have to believe that its okay (to lose). But now I have started believing in myself a lot more. Also, she has started to love painting. Again. She showed it on her mobile. With the Paris Olympics just around the corner, India would hope that belief and joy stays.

MP cabinet rejig likely in a month, 3 ex-Cong MLAs may find a place

BHOPAL: With the four-phase Lok Sabha polls over in Madhya Pradesh, there is strong buzz now about a mini expansion of the council of ministers being on the cards in the state. According to sources in the ruling BJP circles, there is strong possibility of a cabinet reshuffle happening in the state after the LS polls results and before the next session of the Vidhan Sabha in June-July. Importantly, the present council of ministers headed by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav is 31-strong, which means four more vacant slots. The current team includes the CM, two deputy CMs, 18 cabinet ministers, six ministers of state (independent charge) and four MoS. There is possibility of three-to-four new faces getting inducted Yadavs team and key portfolios getting reallocated among the existing ministers, particularly based on the results of the Lok Sabha polls in each of the present ministers constituencies. According to informed sources, report cards or performance reports of existing ministers (particularly based on the outcome of the LS polls results and percentage of polling in various assembly segments) will be drawn once the national elections are over. Based on the performance the ministers, the portfolio reallocation may happen during the cabinet rejig, which is most likely to happen by June-end, just before Vidhan Sabhas next session, whose dates are yet not decided. Sources within the party further claimed that the new faces are likely to be inducted in the council of ministers, included the three sitting MLAs of the Congress, who joined the BJP before or during the LS polls. The three MLAs include Amarwara MLA Kamlesh Shah, Vijaypur MLA Ram Niwas Rawat and Bina MLA Nirmala Sapre.

MP: Images of Hindu deities found on Bhojshala pillar, claims Hindu activist

Bhopal: Images of Hindu deities have been found in a pillar in the complex of Bhojshala temple- Kamal Maula mosque in Dhar district in Madhya Pradesh during excavation of the site by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This was claimed by the coordinator of the Bhojshala festival committee Gopal Sharma who accompanied the ASI team during the excavation of the site. On the 55th day of the excavation and exploration of the site by the ASI team on Tuesday, images of Lord Krishna holding Sudarshan Chakra in his hand, Lord Ram carrying a bow, Lord Parashuram and Shiva were found in one of the pillars of the sanctum Sanctorum of Vagdevi (Goddess Saraswati) shrine built inside the Bhojshala temple complex, Mr Sharma claimed. The images of Krishna, Ram, Parashuram, and Shiva have been found on the northern, southern, eastern, and western sides of the pillar respectively. The images of Hindu deities have surfaced after the pillar was cleared off the soil, he said. The pillar is located in front of the presiding deity of the Vagdevi temple, according to him. More than 1,000 remains of historical importance have been recovered during the excavation, he claimed. The survey of the site, conducted by the ASI following a directive by the Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court on March 11 this year, continued for the 58th day on Friday. The ASI team has been conducting the survey of the complex in the presence of representatives of Hindus and Muslims, local administration, and police. On March 11, the high court ordered ASI to conduct a survey of the complex, observing that its nature and character need to be demystified and freed from the shackles of confusion. The directive by the Madhya Pradesh High Court was in response to a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a group called the Hindu Front for Justice, which argued that Kamal Maula mosque was built during the reign of Alauddin Khilji between the 13th and 14th centuries by destroying and dismantling ancient structures of previously constructed Hindu temples. For Hindus, the ASI-protected site is a temple dedicated to Goddess Vagdevi, while for Muslims, it is the site of Kamal Maula mosque. As per an agreement in 2003, Hindus worship in the Vagdevi temple inside the complex on Tuesdays and Muslims offer namaz in the mosque inside the complex on Fridays.

Occupancy ratio in theatres falls below 20% as no big film released in AP

Vijayawada : Devoid of big-budget film releases in the summer season, single-screen theatres across Andhra Pradesh are losing money as the occupancy ratio fell below 20 per cent in the cinema halls. Due to lack of star-hero film releases, the footfall in the single screen theatres has drastically reduced. With limited options available, theatres are running small-hero films and the spectators are coming in mainly during the weekends, said Mutyala Ramesh, former secretary and current EC member of AP film chamber of commerce. The fall in occupancy ratio should be a wake-up call for all the major production houses, he observed, adding that the advent of OTT platforms has taken away the sheen of the exhibition business. He said, Summers are always a period of good business for cinema houses. But, the unavailability of big films in this season, coupled with the IPL cricket tournament and general elections, derailed the entertainment business completely. The single-screen exhibitors are facing financial constraints and incurring huge losses. The average occupancy ratio is below 20 per cent per show and the patronage for some shows is nil, forcing the theatre managements to cancel the entire shows, said RV Bhopal Prasad, the proprietor of Navrang theatre. The Covid-19 pandemic dealt a severe blow to the theatre business and from then on, the businesses didn't recover. He explained, A single screen theatre has to spend Rs 13,000 to Rs 14,000 per day and the income generated is less than Rs 3,000. Theatre owners are obliged to pay Rs 13,000 as rent for UFO and Qube operators, which is not viable for the cinema halls given the current dull season. Andhra Pradesh has more than 650 single screens, possibly the highest for any state. The advent of multiplex complexes in big cities like Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam has killed the single screen cinemas halls, Bhopal Prasad stated. B Hari, a resident of Vijayawada, said, I used to watch every newly released film on Fridays. However, with no prominent movie releases in the last few weeks, I have not visited any movie theatre.

MP: Female Force Boosts Polling in MP LS Elections

Bhopal: After a dip in polling in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections, BJP had turned to its female force to boost voting in the two successive rounds of the elections in Madhya Pradesh. The party had established a women war room in the state BJP headquarters here to mobilise female cadres including its elected representatives in the local civic bodies at the ground to draw women, voters, to the polling booths. The local women leaders and cadres of BJP were mobilised in the 17 Lok Sabha constituencies that had gone to the polls in the third and fourth phase of elections in the state to draw female voters to the polling booths, a senior BJP functionary told this newspaper on Thursday. The women activists of the party had launched door-to-door campaigns, and held roadside meetings and mass contact programmes to reach out to the female voters for the purpose, he added. Around 22,000 local women activists of BJP had spread across eight LS constituencies that had gone to polls in the fourth phase of elections on May 13 to draw female voters out of their houses to the polling booths on the voting day, state BJP secretary Rajneesh Agrawal said. The party had taken the innovative initiative of opening the women's war room to boost female voting in the third and fourth phases after a dip in voting by women voters in the second phase of LS elections in the state, sources said. The second phase of polling, held on April 26, in which six LS constituencies had gone to polls, had witnessed a dip in voting percentage by 9.05 percent to 61.54 percent over the last LS elections. Indifference of female voters marked the low polling in the second phase of elections with the voting percentage of women falling by a whopping 11 percent to 55.37 over the last LS elections. This prompted the state BJP leadership to roll out a strategy to draw female voters to the booths by undertaking different mass contact programmes in the two successive phases of elections. Following this, the female voting percentage in the third and fourth phases of elections had climbed to 63.53 and 64.24 respectively. This also boosted the average polling in the third and fourth phases to 66.75 percent and 66.87 percent respectively. The four-phase LS polls in Madhya Pradesh in which 29 seats had gone to polls came to an end on May 13.

BHOPAL: Two days after the polling for the four-phase Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh ended, state Congress President Jitu Patwari made a candid admission on Wednesday, saying, ot just the BJP, but our own weaknesses are to be blamed for partys successive poll defeats in the state. Weve lost three-four consecutive elections in the state, including the 2023 assembly elections. This means that we cant always keep on blaming the BJP for our poll losses. Our weaknesses are also responsible and correcting them now is of utmost priority. Were already working on strengthening the state party organisation, and the results will soon be seen on the ground, Patwari told journalists in Bhopal on Wednesday. Reacting to Patwaris candid admission, state BJP spokesperson Shivam Shukla said, It seems that even before the LS polls results are out, the state Congress chief has conceded defeat and started speaking the truth about his partys own problems. His press conference on Wednesday seemed to be his farewell press conference as state party chief. Addressing the same press conference, the state Congress chief claimed, Dont be surprised if the Congress ends up winning LS seats in double-digit numbers in the state. We want the same CM to continue in MP for 5 years and not be replaced by the BJP. Importantly, in the 2014 LS polls, the Congress had managed to win two out of the 29 seats, which fell to just one seat in the 2019 elections in Madhya Pradesh.

Flu-hit duck farms in Alappuzha, farmers cry out for relief

ALAPPUZHA: Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala, is a land with a lot of geographical peculiarities. Surrounded by waterbodies and vast paddyfields, Kuttanads topography presents formidable challenges to its residents. In Kuttanad, around 80% of land where paddy is cultivated lies below the sea level which makes farming in the area an arduous task. Around 1.8 lakh families in the region depend on agriculture sector for their livelihood. Farmers often have to face flooding which destroys their entire crops leaving them in penury. Along with paddy farming, duck rearing is an important occupation for most of the farmers in the region. Marginal farmers raise a small flock of ducks to manage their daily needs. In a region that is crisscrossed by waterbodies, duck rearing gives farmers a decent income. There are many farmers rear a large number of ducks in vast paddy polders which give them good returns if everything goes well. However, their fortunes started taking a dip as avian influenza (bird flu) started affecting duck farming in the region. In the past one decade starting from 2014, the recurring outbreaks of avian influenza have dashed their hopes. Once bird flu strikes the farms, a majority of ducks perish in no time. To prevent the spread of the disease, government agencies step in and cull all the birds in the affected farms to prevent the disease from spreading to other areas. The death of birds and subsequent culling have hit the farmers hard, and the duck farming sector has registered a dip in annual revenue from over Rs 100 crore to less than Rs 10 crore over the last decade. Rapid response team of the animal husbandry department culling ducks infected by bird flu in Kuttanad Avian flu Avian flu is spread by migratory birds which flock to wetlands of Kuttanad. In 2014, the disease struck a vast area of Kuttanad. Again in 2016, 2020 and 2024 the disease reared its ugly head and lakhs of birds had to be culled to contain it. For the past 40 years, I have been engaged in duck farming in Kuttanad. The vagaries of nature have made life difficult for us. Sometimes, it appears as floods and sometimes it takes the form of epidemics. The bacterial infection has become a normal incident and hundreds of ducks die every season. However, bird flu has become a major threat in recent years, said duck farmer K T Kuttappan, of Vezhaprathu, South Thalavadi. In 2014, I incurred a loss of Rs 7 lakh due to bird flu outbreak. Around 8,000 ducks in my farm died and around 4,000 were culled. The government gave compensation for the culled ducks only. The farmers of Kuttanad have been asking successive governments to implement an insurance scheme, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. And we are forced to make up for the loss ourselves, said Kuttappan, who rears around 12,000 ducks in various paddy polders in the region. We avail of loans from banks and private money lenders for farming. After selling the ducks, we repay the loan and again avail of loan for buying a fresh batch of ducklings. Now I have a debt of around Rs 20 lakh in banks. In 2020, the banks served notice to confiscate my properties after I failed to repay the loan. But my friends and relatives helped me overcome the crisis. However, I am facing a similar crisis now. To get out of the cycle of losses, a good farming season is a must. Otherwise, the crisis will continue to drain our finances, Kuttappan said. A grown-up duck (3 months old) will fetch around Rs 200. However, in the retail market, it is priced around Rs 300 to Rs 350. The small-scale sellers buy ducks from us at wholesale prices. Rs 170 is needed to raise a duck. Epidemics are also a major threat to farming. Sometimes the ducks start dying due to virus infection. Veterinary doctors recommend injecting medicine to prevent premature deaths. It is costly which most of us cant afford. A proper insurance mechanism is the only way to save the sector, said Samuel Kutty, secretary, of Aikya Tharavu Karshaka Sangam. Farmers buy ducklings from private hatcheries paying Rs 23 for each. The feed and medicine cost a significant amount. Most of the farmers rear their ducks in vast paddy fields immediately after the harvest. We have to pay rent to the landowners for this, said Samuel. We went to Thiruvananthapuram 16 times to meet the animal husbandry minister since December 2022 to seek compensation for ducks lost in the bird flu that struck our farms in 2022. The state government is saying that the share of compensation from the Union government is yet to be disbursed. So the disbursal of compensation is delayed by two or three years which lands the farmers in a debt trap. Owing to these difficulties, most of the farmers have stopped farming since 2014. In 2014, the registered number of duck farmers in Kuttanad was 1,620. In 2024, it came down to less than 200, said Samuel, who has been rearing ducks for the past 55 years. Thousands of small farmers, including meat traders and egg sellers, earn a living solely from duck business. When bird flu strikes, it affects only a small number of farms, but its repercussions will soon be felt in the entire sector across the state, Samuel said. The lack of a lab facility to identify bird flu is another reason for worry. When ducks start dousing, farmers take them to the Avian Diseases Diagnostic Laboratory at Manjadi near Tiruvalla. The lab will take two to three days to identify the disease. But the Manjadi lab does not have permission to announce the outbreak of the disease. So the samples will be again sent to the National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases( NISHAD), Bhopal, for confirmation. It would take more than a week. So the government should construct a bio-safety level-3 laboratory in Alappuzha to identify the disease immediately after a suspected outbreak is reported, farmers said.

Rajasthan Railway Police exposes gang behind kidnapping of infants In a big revelation by the Rajasthan Railway Police, the team exposed the kidnappings of infants by a juggler gang (madari gang), before they could have turned them into street performers (jamura). Police have arrested five members of the juggler gang, namely, Mukesh Madari, Karna, Arjun, Prem and one woman named Lajjo. According to the police officials, these accused have lived as nomads and earned money from juggling, but they are native to Bhiwani, Haryana. This case came into view when a child from Kota Railway Junction was kidnapped when his father went to collect tickets on May 5. His father reported a complaint and the team started an investigation. Upon checking over 500 CCTVs, it was found that the gang members kidnapped the child from the railway station and took him to Bhopal via Jhalawar. The teams got certain leads and connecting them; they reached Jaipur, where an intense search operation was conducted at multiple places on Tuesday night. During the search operation, the four-year-old boy and another minor who was abducted ten years ago were rescued, said Additional Director General (GRP) Anil Paliwal. In a search operation, a four-year-old innocent boy was rescued from a camp in Vidyadhar Nagar. Police also rescued another boy who was kidnapped 10 years ago from Gangapur City. Upon interrogation, these miscreants confessed to kidnapping this child too. The police officials are now trying to reach the child's family by searching the records of the missing children. (ANI)

Rapid progress: With German legend by his side, Anish in happy space

CHENNAI: Anish Bhanwala is in a happy space at the moment. The proficient pistol shooter from the country has elevated his game in the last one year or so. That lift in confidence was evident during the ongoing Olympic Shooting Trials (OST) as he put up some rich scores to practically seal a spot in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol team for the upcoming Paris Olympics. With an average tally of 585.3 across four trials held at two venues (Delhi and Bhopal), Anish, who signed off with a second-place showing on the concluding day (T4 finals) on Tuesday, was well ahead of the rest of the pack. Vijayveer Sidhu, who topped the T4 finals at the MP Shooting Academy, finished a distant second in the overall tally. Everybody started from zero and we had to perform during the trials. It was a challenge for all and I'm happy that I was able to clear it. I'm happy with the scores that I put up. I'm thrilled that I'll be taking part in my first Olympics, Anish told this daily. Anish made it look rather easy but this period of prosperity comes after setbacks. A former junior world champion, Anish's talent was undeniable. However, as is common with many budding athletes, he was finding it hard to translate his success at the junior level to the senior international level. Despite predominantly being India No 1 at the senior level, something was amiss in his game. The lack of concrete answers then had cost him the chance to be part of the Tokyo Olympics. In 2018, I was putting up decent scores to win medals in the Commonwealth Games. But in the all-important events like the World Championships, I was unable to cope with pressure. I was not able to translate the same results that I was showing in the junior events. I was also lacking maturity I guess, he reflected. A meeting with Ralf Schumann, a three-time Olympic champion, has been a turning point in his career. In fact, he had trained under Schumann before the OST as well. I visited him quite often and trained under him. That was quite an exposure for me. Thanks to TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme), this was possible for me. I started working with Ralf in 2022 and gradually started getting the desired results. Since the German has come on board, he has quite the medal haul a first senior individual medal in Cairo (World Cup), a quota-winning bronze at the Asian Championships and the first Indian to medal at the ISSF World Cup final (in this event). Schumann's impact is clear as Anish racked up those results in his CV in 2023. I don't have full-time training with him as we have a lot of competitions including the trials but I train with him whenever I get the chance, he said. Anish's admiration for the legend of the sport was a given as he used to watch/re-watch his videos on YouTube. After meeting him, the Indian was eager to take in all the valuable gems from the German veteran. I also learnt how to plan things, how to approach a competition, what to do after competition. He had a long career and those small inputs are also very valuable. As far as technique goes, which is one of the key aspects in shooting, the 21-year-old from Karnal (Haryana) also learnt to keep things simple. Most of the shooters have a few different techniques in their locker. He was someone who stuck with one and applied the same for the whole year. I tried to adopt the same. I feel if we keep things simple, it's much better. I just look to stick to the basics. Another person who has been just as immense to him is his personal coach Harpreet Singh, who was alongside him during the trials. Even my coach in India has been a huge influence. He has been with me during the trails in Delhi and Bhopal. He knows me inside out and he has been one of the most important persons in my life. Having had a steady build-up to the Olympics, Anish would be looking to maintain his rhythm and make a mark during the Games. Now, the interesting part starts as we prepare for the Games, he noted. The shooters are likely to have a camp in Paris before the Games. There is bound to be a high level of interest as the country is set to send a record number of participants during the Games.

MP police changes language of crime, from Urdu, Parsi to Hindi,

Bhopal: Muljim turns aropi and jurm becomes aparadh as the language of crime changes in Madhya Pradesh police regulation. A guideline issued late on Monday night by the additional director general (ADG) of police, Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Madhya Pradesh police, Pavan Srivastav has instructed the cops to use the new terms of the police regulation, translated to Hindi from Urdu and Parsi. He has instructed the commissioner of police, Bhopal, to issue police dictionaries to his juniors to ensure strict implementation of the guideline. At least 69 terms in the police regulation, used to be mentioned in Urdu, Parsi and other languages earlier, have been translated to Hindi, the new police dictionary suggests. Every state has its own police regulation written in its official language. The guideline issued by the ADG has instructed the cops to use the Hindi version of 69 terms, earlier mentioned in Urdu, Parsi and other languages in the police regulation. Accordingly, girafdari has been replaced by the Hindi word abhirakhya (arrest), adalat has been changed to nyayalay (court), fariyadi has been replaced by abdedak (petitioner), muljim has been changed to aropi (accused), and jurm has been replaced by aparadh (crime). Interestingly, the Urdu and Parsi versions of terms which find mentions in police regulation are well known to the cops and the cops still find it uncomfortable with the translated version of the terms, a senior police officer said here , unwilling to be quoted.

The report highlighted that 1,584 toilets intended for persons with disabilities have been earmarked for transgender individuals use. In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Jasmine Kaur Chhabra, advocating for separate washrooms for the transgender community to mitigate the risks of sexual assault and harassment, the Delhi High Court acknowledged the governments January status report and concluded the proceedings. During the hearing, advocate Rupinder Pal Singh, representing the petitioner, expressed no objection to closing the PIL, underscoring the governments obligation to fulfil its commitments outlined in the status report and subsequent actions. MP: High court imposes fine on editor for targeting sitting judge

Bhopal : The Madhya Pradesh high court has imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on an editor of a local Hindi daily after holding him guilty under the Contempt of Courts Act in connection with a news report targeting one of its sitting judges. The division bench of the high court comprising Chief Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice Milind Ramesh Phadke held Suman Singh Sikarwar, editor of Dainik Chambal Vani, guilty under the Contempt of Courts Act while calling the news report published in the daily in 2011 against a sitting judge of the court, as an attempt by the editor to scandalise the image of a judge of this court as well as other judges. The court imposed a fine of Rs one lakh on the editor while issuing a warning to him to remain cautious in future. The court had taken suo motu cognizance of the front-paged story published in the daily Dainik Chambal Vani in 2011 and initiated proceedings under the Contempt of Court Act. The case was admitted for hearing in 2014 after its transfer from Jabalpur to Gwalior bench. It was finally heard on March 14 this year. The verdict in the case was delivered on May six. The court has held that the news report was not in the nature of mere dispassionate criticism of the judges, their working and their judgements but contained intemperate language and undesirable expletives. Thus, it appears that it was an intentional attempt made by the respondent-contemptor (the editor) to scandalise the image of a judge of this Court as well as other judges, the court held. The court observed that there was no repentance of any kind on his (editors) face and just for the sake of apology, he had made a regretful acknowledgement of the offence, which appears to this court not bona fide. The court rejected the editors oral offer of unconditional apology and held him guilty under Contempt of Court Act.

Rain, Gusty Winds Expected in Southwest MP, Dampening Voter Turnout: IMD Forecast

Rain, Gusty Winds Expected in Southwest MP, Dampening Voter Turnout: IMD Forecast The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast rainfall with gusty winds with a chance of hail at isolated places in the Malwa-Nimar region of Madhya Pradesh, where polling is on in eight constituencies in the fourth and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections in the state. The Election Commission (EC) and government agencies are working to increase voter turnout, which has been hit because of extreme heat, among other reasons. As per poll authorities, an average voter turnout of 32.38 per cent was recorded till 11 am in the Lok Sabha seats of Dewas, Ujjain, Mandsour, Ratlam, Dhar, Indore, Khargone and Khandwa. A voter turnout of 64.76 per cent was recorded in 21 constituencies that went to polls in the first three phases, while in the 2019 general elections, these constituencies had seen 69.74 per cent polling, MP chief electoral officer Anupam Rajan said. Talking to PTI, IMD Bhopal's senior meteorologist Abhijeet Chakrobarty said rainfall of 1.5 mm was recorded at Kannod in Dewas district of the Malwa region between 8.30 am and 10.30 am. As per the forecast, rainfall with gusty winds and a chance of hail is likely at isolated places in Khargone, Khandwa, Barwani, Alirajpur, Jhabua, Dhar, Indore, Ratlam, Ujjain, Dewas, Shajapur, Mandsaur and Neemuch from 8.30 am on Monday to 8.30 am on Tuesday, he said. Apart from Indore, SC-reserved constituencies of Dewas and Ujjain, ST-reserved seats of Raltam, Dhar and Khargone, and Khandwa and Mandsaur received rainfall in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 am, he said. Manawar town in Dhar district received 46 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, ending at 8.30 am, he added. An election official said the authorities have not received complaints of power outages in polling stations. They have learned of windstorms and gusty winds in some parts of the Nimar region, including Khandwa, Khargone, Barwani and Burhanpur districts, he said. ''We are concerned about the inclement weather. We are trying to ramp up the turnout, but the weather is creating a hurdle. We have enough time till 6 pm when the voting culminates,'' he said.

BJP faces tough test in its tribal stronghold of MP

BHOPAL: Stage is all set for the fourth and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in Madhya Pradesh, when eight seats of the Malwa-Nimar region (western and south-western MP) will vote on Monday. While the ruling BJP appears strong on most seats of the region which since long has been considered a saffron stronghold three tribal reserved seats, Ratlam-ST, Dhar-ST and Khargone-ST (all three neighbouring seats) may throw keen contests between the two prime contenders, ruling BJP and the opposition Congress. Total 74 candidates, including 69 male and 5 female are in fray on the eight seats, which also include Indore (housing maximum 25.26 lakh voters, communally sensitive Khandwa, predominantly agrarian Mandsaur, MP CM Dr Mohan Yadavs home district seat Ujjain-SC and adjoining Dewas-SC seat). Among these eight seats, BJP has fielded its sitting MPs on six seats (Indore, Mandsaur, Dewas-SC, Ujjain-SC, Khargone-ST and Khandwa), while 2014 winner Savitri Thakur is the party candidate from Dhar-ST seat and MP minister Nagarsingh Chouhans district panchayat head wife Anita Nagarsingh Chouhan has been fielded against five times former winner and ex-union minister Kantilal Bhuria in Ratlam-ST seat. According to Animesh Jain and Chandrabhan Singh Bhadauria, two senior journalists of the region, The main contest between Congress and BJP will be in Ratlam-ST, Khargone-ST and Dhar-ST seats. If the Congress fights these three seats unitedly on Monday, a stunner for the BJP cannot be ruled out on June 4. While Ratlam-ST seat is the most hotly contested seat in this phase, in the adjoining Dhar-ST seat, first time Congress candidate Radheyshyam Muvel (who is considered close to partys top leadership as well as states leader of opposition Umang Singhar) is taking on 2014 winner Savitri Thakur, who had defeated Singhar ten years back from the same seat by over one lakh votes. According to informed sources in Dhar, if all prominent Congress leaders of Dhar, including ex-minister Surendra Singh Baghel and second-time MLA Dr Hiralal Alawa unitedly back the Congress candidate, the contest could be very close. The BJP on the other hand is eyeing to cement its position on the seat through big leads from urban Dhar and Mhow assembly segments and is hoping for consolidation of Hindu votes in both these segments on the issue of ongoing High Court-ordered ASI survey at the disputed Bhojshala-Kamal Maula Mosque in Dhar city. The most interesting seat among all the eight seats, however, could be Indore (countrys cleanest city and MPs biggest LS seat), where after the withdrawal of papers by Congress candidate on April 29, the sitting BJP MP Shankar Lalwani will be taking on NOTA (the Congresss undeclared candidate). In 2019 polls, Indore seat was won by Lalwani by a massive 5.47 lakh votes, but with no Congress or any other INDI bloc candidate this time, it remains to be seen if turnout will rise or decline sharply. MP: BJP pushes hard for increasing voting in 4th phase polling in MP on Monday

Bhopal: Boosted by the improvement in voting in the third phase of Lok Sabha polls, BJP has launched a special drive to push up the polling in the fourth and final phase of LS elections in Madhya Pradesh. The party has mobilised its booth level committees, block in-charges of the party and BJP MLAs to spread out in their respective areas of influence to draw voters out of their homes and bring them to the polling booth to vote, a senior BJP functionary told this newspaper on Sunday. Eight Lok Sabha constituencies falling under Malwa-Niwar region of Madhya Pradesh are going to polls in the fourth and final phase polling in the state on Monday. The booth level committees, Panna Pramukhs and the elected representatives of the party have been activated in the ground to ensure record polling in the fourth and final phase of LS elections in Madhya Pradesh, state BJP secretary Rajneesh Agrawal said. The voter turnout in the third phase polling witnessed a sharp rise as compared to the second phase polling after the party launched a special drive to improve voting, he said. The second phase polling had recorded a voting percentage of 58.59 which increased sharply by 7.91 percent to 66.50 percent in the third phase of elections. The improvement in voting in the third phase polling came following a missive to the effect by Union home minister Amit Shah. The first three phases of LS elections in Madhya Pradesh saw polling in six, seven and nine seats respectively. However, the polling percentage in the seats held in the first, second and third phases was less than 7.32 percent, 9.05 percent and 3.66 percent respectively as compared to the average voting in these seats in 2019. State BJP leadership has however found it a challenging task to increase voting in the final phase polling considering the low key campaigning in the phase. All the eight seats going to polls in the fourth phase polling fall under Malwa-Niwar region of Madhya Pradesh, considered a stronghold of BJP. BJP has already geared up to further improve the voting in the phase. But, there would be significant increase in voting only if Congress would be able to mobilise its cadres to draw its core voters to the polling booth on the day, a senior BJP leader said. BJP had won 28 out of 29 seats in the 2019 LS polls in Madhya Pradesh, leaving the lone seat of Chhindwara to Congress.

Lok Sabha polls: Fight for Bhil tribe hometurf in western Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: Its the Bhil tribe politicians who have mostly ruled the roost in the Ratlam-ST constituency of western Madhya Pradesh over the last 72 years. Barring 1971 and 1977, when Bhilala tribe politician Bhagirath Bhanwar won the seat as a Samyukt Socialist Party and Janta Party candidate, respectively, its the Bhuria tribe politicians only who have won the seat 13 times on Congress ticket and only twice as BJP candidates. Anita Nagar Singh Chouhan, the first-time BJP candidate and wife of Madhya Pradesh minister Nagar Singh Chouhan, wants to be the second Bhilala tribe to win the Bhil-dominant seat, which has 14,000 more female voters than male voters. Chouhan is the current Alirajpur district panchayat chairperson and has become the target of the Congress, for allegedly being the rubber stamp candidate of the minister-husband Nagar. She is contesting against Congress 73-year-old Bhil tribe politician and ex-Union minister Kantial Bhuria, who won the seat five times (1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2015) but lost in 2014 and 2019. The contest is seen as the toughest battle among all eight seats in western and south-western Madhya Pradesh, where the polling is due in the fourth phase on Monday. The constituency is spread across eight assembly segments (seven of them being tribal reserved) in Ratlam, Jhabua and Alirajpur districts, which border Gujarat and Rajasthan. It has seen two prominent Bhuria-surname politicians: the late Dilip Singh Bhuria and Kantilal Bhuria. The May 13 battle is largely being seen as a battle between Bhil and Bhilala tribes in a seat where more than 75% of voters are tribals, out of which more than 60% are Bhils and Bhilala comes in with around 25% of voters, followed by Patliyas. While Bhuria (also the former state Congress chief), whose election is managed by his first-time doctor-turned-Congress MLA son Vikrant Bhuria, is eyeing victory a sixth time largely due to the big Bhil tribe vote, hes faced with another Bhil tribe candidate, Balu Singh Gamod, who is in the fray as a Bharatiya Adivasi Party (BAP) candidate. Interestingly, in the adjoining Banswada seat of Rajasthan, the Congress announced support to BAP candidate, despite the grand old partys candidate being in the fray. But in neighbouring Ratlam-ST, the BAP hasnt reciprocated for Congress veteran Kantilal Bhuria, whose camp sniffs damage due to the BAP candidate, particularly in Sailana-ST assembly segment of Ratlam district, which has a BAP MLA Kamleshwar Dodiyar. Dodiyar was noticeably away from campaign till recently; he rejoined for the BAP candidate two days back and has made it clear that Balu Singh Gamod is in the fray to win the battle and not just cuts into the votes of Congress and BJP. In the 2023 assembly polls, Balu Singh as BAP candidate had finished third with 15,000-plus votes from Petlawad-ST seat, which was won by current MP minister and five-time BJP MLA Nirmala Bhuria (late Dilip Singh Bhurias daughter) by just 5,000-plus votes. Jhabua-based analyst Chandrabhan Singh Bhadauria says that with Kantilal Bhuria fighting on a Congress ticket for more than two decades and his son Vikrant being a local MLA from the Jhabua-ST seat, other Congress politicians feel that the party is getting hegemonized by the Bhuria family. This could augur well for Bhuria, Bhadauria maintained. On the other hand, even the BJP candidate isnt sitting comfortably, as many in the ruling BJP see her as a reflection of the rising clout of her arrogant minister-husband, Nagarsingh Chouhan. Many other politicians, particularly from Bhil tribe, including young leader Bhanu Bhuria and partys state ST cell head KS Bhabhar (who were frontrunners for the BJP ticket) are not supportive of the BJP candidate. Getting inputs from the ground, the partys central and state higher ups have clearly told the senior BJP leaders, including three minister Chetan Kashyap (Ratlam), Nirmala Bhuria (Petlawad-ST) and Nagarsingh Chouhan (Alirajpur) to work in unity for partys poll success. Added Bhadauria, with the election now being just a day away, the Congress and BJP both are focusing on their strong assembly segments. In the 2023 state elections, the BJP won four assembly segments (Petlawad-ST, Alirajpur-ST, Ratlam City and Ratlam Rural-ST), while the Congress won Jhabua-ST, Thandla-ST and Jobat-ST segments and BAP made winning debut in Sailana-ST. In the 2019 elections when ex-MP government official and BJPs Bhil tribe MLA GS Damor defeated Bhuria by over 90,000 votes, around 75% of that winning lead came from the communally sensitive and Jain community dominated Ratlam City assembly segment. The BJP is largely targeting getting leads from Ratlam City, Ratlam-Rural, Petlawad and Alirajpur. The Congress is eyeing bigger leads from Jhabua, Jobat, Thandla and Sailana. However, with the BAP is placed strongly in the fray, poll prospects of Congress getting hit at least in Sailana cannot be ruled out, Bhadauria said. Land of snacks Ratlam is particularly famous for its spicy snacks, particularly the Ratlami Sev. It also houses one of the important junctions of western railway. The constituency is spread across eight assembly segments, seven of which are reserved for tribals.

MP: NOTA Hogs Limelight as Campaigning for 4th phase Polling Ends

Bhopal: NOTA (None of the above) hogged limelight in Indore Lok Sabha constituency as campaigning for the fourth and final phase of LS polls in Madhya Pradesh ended on Saturday evening. Indore LS constituency has come into focus as Congress, in a strange decision, chose to campaign for NOTA after partys official candidate Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew his nomination at the last moment, denying the party to field its nominee in the seat. The party was expected to extend support to one of the 13 independent candidates who are in the fray in the seat to take on BJP in the constituency. But, the state party leadership has decided to campaign for NOTA to secure more votes for the provision than what BJP candidate gets, although, it would hardly make any difference in deciding the outcome of the polls in the seat. Even if NOTA gets maximum votes, the candidate who secures fewer votes than NOTA will be declared winner. We want to get maximum votes for NOTA to embarrass BJP which had made Congress candidate withdraw his candidature under duress, Congress spokesman K K Mishra has said. BJP had taken it as a matter of prestige and intensified its campaign by launching a special drive to reach out people to persuade them not to waste their votes by pressing the NOTA button and instead vote for the saffron party. The BJP activists were seen removing banners and posters appealing to the people to vote for NOTA to counter the drive by Congress to sensitise voters on the necessity to opt for NOTA in Indore seat. Sitting BJP MP Shankar Lalwani has been fielded by his party in the seat. He takes on 13 independent candidates in the seat, making it NOTA versus BJP in the constituency. Congress heavyweight and former Union minister Kantilal Bhuria has been fielded by his party in Ratlam (ST) LS constituency which is going to polls along with seven other LS seats in the fourth phase polling in the state. He is pitted against BJP candidate Anita Nagar Singh in the multi-cornered contest in the constituency. All the eight LS seats going to polls in the fourth phase polling on May 13 are in Nimar-Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. In the first three phases of LS polls in Madhya Pradesh, 21 seats had gone to polls.

The march was originally slated to be led by former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, but ultimately, it was Kamal Nath-loyalist Sajjan Singh Verma who led the event. The march occurred just a day after a similar event from Pardeshipura to the Patnipura area, which is part of the states minister and senior BJP MLA Kailash Vijayvargiyas home constituency. BHOPAL : Former Union minister and Congress candidate from the Ratlam-ST seat in Madhya Pradesh Kantilal Bhuria has sparked a political controversy by promising that individuals with two wives will receive Rs 2 lakh if the Congress is elected to power at the Centre. During a poll rally in the Sailana assembly segment of Ratlam district on Thursday, while discussing the Congresss Nyay Patras Mahalaxmi Scheme (which promises Rs 1 lakh annually to one woman of each impoverished family until the family escapes poverty), Bhuria stated, If Congress comes to power, as outlined in our manifesto, every woman will receive Rs 1 lakh in her bank account. Women from every household will get Rs 1 lakh each. Those who have two wives will receive Rs 2 lakh, Bhuria remarked during the rally. Through this promise, Bhuria has consciously targeted those tribals who have more than one wife, as there is a wide prevalence of polygamy among the Bhil and Bhilala tribes in the region. The ruling BJP has taken offence to Bhurias statement and has called for action against him by the Election Commission. The state Congress chief Jitu Patwari, who was present at the rally, seemed amused by Bhurias unusual promise. This is a terrific announcement, promising a double bonanza for those having two wives. It needs to be applauded, said Patwari. Ruling BJP leaders have sharply criticized Bhurias remarks and Patwaris encouragement.

FEATURE-India's solar power subsidies for homes face scepticism

FEATURE-India's solar power subsidies for homes face scepticism * New subsidy scheme to encourage people to go solar * 10 million homes targeted for solar panels * Green skills, distribution companies pose challenges By Bhasker Tripathi NEW DELHI, May 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Lakshmi Narayan was one of the first to see the light: in 2020 the engineer put solar panels on his roof in India's Bhopal city, becoming a clean energy pioneer because of his desire to help his country move away from planet-heating fossil fuels. I understand the importance of renewable energy and thought that everyone should adopt it, said Narayan, 60, whose action inspired many others to do the same in the capital of Madhya Pradesh state in central India. Now, a new government scheme - unveiled before voting began in nationwide elections in April - aims to encourage more people to install solar panels on their roofs as part of India's commitment to triple renewable capacity by 2030. The new programme, launched in February, provides 75 billion rupees ($9 billion) in subsidies to install grid-connected rooftop solar systems on around 10 million homes, allowing consumers to reduce their electricity bills when the sun shines and sell extra units to the grid to earn some money. It is expected to create 30 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity in homes, leading to a reduction of 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent planet-heating emissions over the 25-year lifespan of the rooftop systems. I want three things. Every household's power bill should be zero; we should sell surplus electricity and earn money; and I want to make India self-reliant in the energy sector as we transition to the era of electric vehicles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a televised interview in late April. The process, which was previously complicated and fragmented, has been simplified with the creation of a one-stop online portal to smooth applications and facilitate installations. Subsidies are deposited directly into people's bank accounts. India overtook Japan to become the third-largest solar power generator in 2023, providing 5.9% of global growth in solar, a report by think tank Ember said on May 8. But Ember noted that wind, solar and other low-carbon sources are not yet growing fast enough to meet India's rising electricity demand. The new rooftop solar programme is meant to boost that growth but Narayan's experience offers a cautionary tale. He says the new online portal will provide answers to a lot of the bureaucratic headaches that used to bedevil the process but, in his experience, the bigger challenge is getting the electricity distribution companies, or DISCOMs, on board. A December 2023 study by the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), a Delhi-based think tank, said DISCOMs were supposed to provide seamless access and connectivity for rooftop solar systems to the national grid but that this was sometimes in direct conflict with business interests of the companies. Narayan said that although he saved up to 250,000 rupees ($2,996) in electricity bills over three years thanks to his 6 kilowatt (KW) solar system, selling excess electricity to the grid proved to be problematic with debt-ridden DISCOMs proving ineffective partners. The electricity distribution company charges me 8 rupees for each unit that I consume from the grid, but for the surplus solar electricity that I sell back to the grid, they pay me 1.5 rupees per unit. How is that fair? And he said that the distribution company added a fixed charge of 500 rupees to his monthly bill after he installed the panels. They said that this is the minimum amount we will charge you even if your bill is zero, he said, adding that he got no answer when he enquired about the reason for the new tariff. DISTRIBUTION CHALLENGES, LACK OF SKILLS The pledge to cut electricity bills by boosting the solar power sector was a key election promise from Modi's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and reflects India's long-term commitment to boost renewables. In 2015, India promised to install 40 GW of rooftop solar capacity by 2022 but progress has been slow. By the end of 2023, it had only installed 11 GW, including 3 GW in homes with the rest in commercial or industrial properties. That original commitment has now been revised to 100 GW of rooftop solar installations by 2026, 40 GW of which would come from the residential sector alone. Energy experts say India's solar drive is hampered by fears of DISCOMs losing income, a shortage of skilled workers to make, install and service solar panels, and the proliferation of substandard products. Danish Ali, who has installed a 4 KW solar system on his roof in Lucknow in northern India, said another problem arose from the fact that the grid-connected solar systems cannot deliver power during outages unless they have a separate battery to operate them. In areas where there are long power cuts, grid-connected systems will not work because they do not provide any power back-up, the 50-year-old said. Ali has to endure up to two hours of power outages a few times a week during peak summer months when temperatures regularly rise above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). He said that adding a battery to the grid-connected system could solve the problem, but the government subsidy does not cover the installation of such hybrid systems. Shreya Mishra, CEO of Mumbai-based SolarSquare Energy, which installs solar panels and is one of Indias largest rooftop solar companies, said the industry could be on the brink of a boom; in 2023, 150,000 rooftop systems were installed and there are plans to target 2.5 million houses this year, she said. The programme has turned rooftop solar into a dinner table conversation that has turbocharged the consumer interest, she said. But more training is needed for workers in these new green jobs and domestic manufacture of solar panels must also be ramped up, she added. The government says the new solar programme will create around 1.7 million direct jobs across various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, sales, installation, operation, maintenance, and other services. An expert with a solar consultancy, who did not wish to be named, said that the relatively limited growth of home solar systems had already caused friction with DISCOMs. Imagine millions of homes being hooked up to the grid and injecting their excess electricity in a system that is already facing so many technical losses, the expert said, referring to losses caused by, for example, damage to transmission lines or electricity theft. For Narayan, solving distribution issues will be central to encouraging more people to switch to solar and install panels on their rooftops. If the government can enable people to truly earn some money, not for show but justified money, with these rooftop systems, it will be a hit among customers. Who would not want it? he said.
