Varanasi: Buddhist monk praises PM Modi for development in places linked to Lord Buddha

Varanasi: Buddhist monk praises PM Modi for development in places linked to Lord Buddha Buddhist monks in Varanasi gave their blessings to PM Modi and praised him, calling him a Buddhist patron. Varanasi is the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is running for the same seat for a third consecutive term. Varanasi will vote on June 1, the seventh and last phase of the Lok Sabha elections. A Bhuddhist monk speaking to ANI said that PM made unprecedented developmental works in places linked to Lord Buddha's life. Whole of the Buddhist society believes that PM Modi is a Buddhist patron. In the last 10 years, as a Buddhist patron, he has made unprecedented developments in places linked to Lord Buddha, like Bodh Gaya, Kushinagar, Sarnath, Kaushambi, Rajgir and Vaishali. He made roads, railway station and airports; earlier developments like this never happened. That is why people from all corners of the world are coming here for pilgrimage and to bless PM Modi, said the Buddhist monk while speaking to ANI. Buddhist monks also offered prayers for Prime Minister's health and long life. He is giving respect to every caste, community and religion. That's why we believe that such a leader has come after 1000 years and ruling with the concept of four novel truths. Therefore, we appreciate on behalf of World Buddhist Community and all Buddhist temples and monasteries his novel works and we pray for him to live long over 100 years, the Buddhist monk added. Earlier, Buddhist community leaders voiced support in favour of PM Modi after the remark made by Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge regarding PM Modi's faith in Buddhism. Venerable Bhikkhu Sanghasena, founder and president of Mahabodhi International Meditation Centre, expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for what work for the Buddhist people in India and said that no other government have supported the Buddhist cause in India. I want to express my sincere gratitude to PM Narendra Modi in my capacity for what he has done for the Buddhist people in India. I don't remember how many PMs and governments, earlier supported the Buddhist cause in India. PM Modi has done a lot for Buddhism, he said. He has laid the foundation stone of the International Buddhist Centre in Lumbini and has given us a special flight to take Buddha relics to different countries like Thailand. Wherever he goes, he talks about Buddhism. In the United Nations, he said, 'Bharat ne duniya ko Buddha diya hai, yuddh nahi', Sanghasena added. (ANI)

'New India' doesn't need madarssas, it needs modern colleges producing doctors, engineers: Himanta

'New India' doesn't need madarssas, it needs modern colleges producing doctors, engineers: Himanta Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday asserted that the ''new India'' led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not need madarssas but modern institutions that produce doctors and engineers. Addressing back-to-back election rallies in Muzaffarpur, Siwan and Buxar Lok Sabha seats, Sarma said grand temples would be built in Varanasi and Mathura and the Uniform Civil Code would be implemented if the NDA returns to power by winning over 400 Lok Sabha seats. ''The new India of Modi ji does not need madarssas... we need modern schools and colleges that will produce doctors and engineers... not maulvis from madarssas,'' he said. Sarma said the NDA will ensure that Pakistan occupied Kashmir, which is an integral part of India, returns to the country. ''We will implement UCC, build a temple on Krishna Janmabhoomi premises in Mathura and establish Kashi Vishwanath temple in place of Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi, besides ensuring that PoK returns to India, after winning over 400 seats,'' he said. Hitting out at the Congress and its allies, Sarma said, ''Rahul Gandhi and Lalu Prasad did not attend the consecration of Ram Mandir. They want to send Ram Lalla back to the tent. We must not let this happen.'' He labeled Congress and RJD as ''biggest enemies of OBCs'' for allegedly trying to introduce religion-based reservations in the country. ''Religion-based reservations should be given to Muslims in Pakistan, not India. Lalu Prasad should go to Pakistan to give reservations to Muslims. The NDA will not allow this at any cost,'' the Assam CM said. Asserting that Rahul Gandhi can ''never become PM'', Sarma said, ''He can contest elections in Pakistan and become its PM. He and his party are indulging in politics of appeasement.'' ''The corrupt Congress-RJD alliance is trying its best to stall development of Bihar... they indulge in fulfilling their own interests whenever they get an opportunity. The NDA is breaking their nexus,'' he said. Sarma alleged that besides putting up its own candidates, Congress and RJD are also backing Independent candidates in certain seats against BJP nominees. ''These Independents always in constant touch with leaders of the Congress and RJD,'' he alleged. While BJP's Raj Bhushan Nishad is contesting from Muzaffarpur, Vijay Lakshmi Devi Kushwaha is contesting as an NDA nominee from Siwan. BJP has fielded Mithilesh Tiwary from Buxar Lok Sabha seat. Muzaffarpur will go to polls on May 20, while elections will be held in Siwan on May 25 and in Buxar on June 1.

Bless me with your support, I will be always there for you: Karan Bhushan Singh to Kaiserganj voters

GONDA: Karan Bhushan Singh, the BJP's Kaiserganj Lok Sabha candidate, brushes aside the sexual assault allegations levelled against his father Brij Bhushan Singh saying these are political and made up as he urges the people to bless him with their votes like they have always done to his family. Karan Bhushan, 33, has been attending an average of 10 small public meetings every day in different parts of the constituency. Apart from elderly and a handful of women, young men form a major chunk in these meetings. The plan is to reach out to the people of every village of the constituency before polling and appeal for their support, he said about the meetings. He travels in a cavalcade of around 15 high-end SUVs. All of you have supported my family and have been with my father. I want you to continue your support and like my father, I will always be there for you, he says at one such meeting held in Colonelganj area of Gonda. This is Karan Bhushan Singh's first political battle. A law graduate, he was elected the chairman of the Uttar Pradesh wrestling federation last year. Known to be soft spoken, Karan Bhushan touches the feet of almost everyone who approaches him. Apna ashirvad dete rahiyega (keep giving your blessings), he says. The family enjoys support, particularly among the upper castes in Gonda and nearby districts. Brij Bhushan Singh, a six-time MP who has represented Gonda, Balrampur and Kaiserganj constituencies, was denied a ticket this time by the BJP. He had to step down as Wrestling Federation of India chief after the sexual harassment allegations by six women wrestlers. Karan Bhushan's elder brother Prateek Bhushan Singh is a BJP MLA. His mother Ketki Devi Singh is a former MP from Gonda. Karan Bhushan rejects the charges against his father, saying the allegations are political and made up. We will challenge them in court. On May 10, a Delhi court ordered framing of sexual harassment and other charges against Brij Bhushan in the case lodged by the six wrestlers, observing there was sufficient evidence against him. Karan Bhushan, the youngest son of Brij Bhushan, also refutes allegations of nepotism, saying he wants to take forward the legacy of his father. Had I been in some other field and was parachuted here at the last moment, one could have levelled such allegations. I have been among the people and have campaigned for my father and brother. I was already into politics, it's just that I have been given a responsibility now by my party for which I am thankful, he argued. When asked about his plans for Kaiserganj, Karan Bhushan said, A lot is to be done here, be it improving health facilities, ensuring better education for children and especially opening skill and sports centres for youngsters. I will try to do this in my tenure. On what has his father done about these issues, Karan Bhushan said, My father has taken the area towards all-around development. I want to take his work forward on the path shown by him. Coming from Thakur community, the Brij Bhushan family has an influence over the region. There is a vast network of schools, college, and other business institutions owned by the family in Gonda and nearby districts. Kaiserganj has over 17 Lakh voters with a considerable number of Dalits and Muslims. In 2019, Brij Bhushan got 5.8 lakh votes, almost double than the BSP candidate pitted against him. Karan Bhushan claims the victory margin this time will be bigger than the one in 2019. This time my father is campaigning for me. My brother is campaigning for me. I have the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the entire party. In such a situation, I believe I will win by a bigger margin, he claimed. His father has already claimed that the victory margin will third largest in the state after Varanasi and Lucknow. Modi is contesting from Varanasi while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is in fray in Lucknow. The Samajwadi Party, a constituent of the INDIA alliance has pitted Ram Bhagat Mishra against Karan Bhushan. The Bahujan Samaj Party has named Narendra Pandey from the seat. Kaiserganj will go to poll in the fifth phase on May 20.

Weavers in UP's carpet city Bhadoi say international expo mart, ODOP benefitted them

Weavers in UP's carpet city Bhadoi say international expo mart, ODOP benefitted them Weavers in Bhadohi, a small town in Uttar Pradesh famed worldwide for its carpets and with an annual Rs 40,000 crore business turnover say the One District One Product scheme has been beneficial for them and that a return of the BJP government will help them further. Demand for hand-woven carpets from Bhadohi also known as the Carpet City has a huge demand in the international market. The city is located only 62 m from Varanasi, the Lok Sabha constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Brijesh Kumar Gupta, a carpet businessman, told ANI, It is a business worth Rs 40 thousand crores and there is a possibility of growing further... Now the International Expo Mart has made a lot of difference because the buyers feel that we are going to a party where the product is made and we are seeing reality. If there is no mediator in between, then they are feeling comfortable.. Road infrastructure, airports--everything has been built, it has doubled since the formation of the Modi government. There were bad road conditions ten years ago. Citizens from South Africa are big fans of Modi ji.. Some US customers had stopped coming because of bad roads; everyone and international buyers are coming. Expo Mart has become a big source ..Carpet Industries is continuously progressing ..., Gupta said. The electricity charges have been reduced. Online transfers have brought a lot of convenience and ensured transparency. ... Local product are being promoted. One district, One product; therefore, the demand for carpet has increased in the country through ODOP, he said. 20-25 lakh people are associated with the industry, he said, adding that Earlier, we used incentives; this time we have launched a campaign to get a rebate of the tax we pay. We hope that the government will respond. About 10-12 lakh people are associated with this industry in Bhadohi. We are positive about this election. Modi ji will come again and think about the weavers to take the country forward. Just like he is building houses for the poor, similarly, he will build for the weavers too..., he said. Neha Baranwal, who is a carpet designer, said, There is a lot of potential in the carpet industry, especially if we talk about women. The most important thing is that educated or illiterate women can also work in this industry... We get a big opportunity by setting up the International Expo Mart in Bhadohi because not all companies are big; some companies are start-ups; it is very good for them, buyers from outside come and interact with them..., she added. On what the women associated with the carpet industry think about the elections, Neha said, I believe that we have benefited a lot; employment opportunities are there, and if this (BJP) government comes again, we will make further progress. And more employment opportunities will be available. Safety and respect for women have increased. Bhadohi Parliamentary constituency is one of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh. Ramesh Chand of the BJP, the current MP of Bhadohi ahd won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by securing 510029 votes, while 466414 votes were polled in favour of Rangnath Mishra of the BSP. Ramesh Chand clinched a landslide victory with a margin of 43615 votes. Voting will be held in Bhadohi on May 25. BJP's Vinod Kumar Bind is pitted against Lalitesh Pati Tripathi, AITC and BSP's Dada Chauhan. (ANI)

Congress Criticizes PM Modi Ahead of UP Rallies, Raises Concerns for Women's Safety

In a fresh barrage of criticism, the Congress party took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, pointing out the BJP's decision to field the son of incumbent MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faces allegations of sexually harassing women wrestlers. The party questioned whether women could truly feel secure in what they termed Modi's India. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary, directed his inquiries at the prime minister just ahead of his rallies in Uttar Pradesh. Ramesh highlighted several issues, including the completion status of Jaunpur Medical College and the condition of the Gomti River. He pointed out delays in the completion of Jaunpur Medical College, originally initiated in 2015 under Akhilesh Yadav's administration but still unfinished after nine years. Ramesh accused the BJP government of neglecting this project upon assuming power in Uttar Pradesh. Regarding the Gomti River, Ramesh criticized the BJP for what he described as disregard for environmental regulations and court orders, resulting in degradation rather than conservation efforts. He lamented the river's deteriorating condition, blaming the BJP's neglect for its current state, which experts allegedly deem practically dead. Ramesh also condemned the BJP's decision to nominate Karan Bhushan Singh, son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, for a Lok Sabha seat despite allegations against his father. He argued that this move represented another failure by PM Modi to prioritize the safety and dignity of India's daughters. The Congress's critique comes amidst ongoing political tensions in Uttar Pradesh, setting the stage for a heated electoral battle as various parties gear up for the upcoming polls. PM should focus on development issues, instead of 'Hindu-Muslim', 'mutton-chicken' speeches: Kharge

LUCKNOW: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk about development matters rather than other issues in his campaign speeches, and said mutton-chicken, Hindu-Muslim are his words and not ours. His remarks came after Prime Minister Modi in an interview to News 18 said he won't be fit for public life if he starts playing the Hindu-Muslim card. Why is the PM not seeking votes on the work he did in the last 10 years, he said at a joint press conference with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav here. On PM Modi's remarks that he has never discriminated between Hindu and Muslim, Kharge responded, Had the prime minister not said mutton, beef, chicken, fish and mangalsutra . These words are not mine but his (PM's). Mallikarjun Kharge slams PM Modi, terms 'mangalsutra' remark shameful I am saying that leave these things, tell people about the work you did and seek votes on its behalf. They talk of mutton-chicken not us, Kharge said. The Congress chief asserted that the opposition INDIA bloc is in a strong position after four phases of Lok Sabha polls and that the people of the country are prepared to bid farewell to Prime Minister Modi. Four rounds of polling have been completed in the country. The INDIA bloc is in a very strong position. I can say with full confidence that the people of the country have prepared to bid farewell to Narendra Modi. INDIA bloc is going to form the new government on June 4, he said. The SP chief claimed the alliance will win 79 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. INDIA bloc will win 79 seats in Uttar Pradesh. It is in contest only on just one seat 'Kyoto', Yadav said referring to the PM's parliamentary constituency of Varanasi. BJP's condition will worsen in remaining phases of LS polls: Akhilesh Yadav The PM and the BJP have earlier stated that they will develop Varanasi like Kyoto, a picturesque city in Japan. Kharge also claimed that the BJP will change the Constitution if it comes to power again. These people are trying to change the Constitution. RSS leader Mohan Bhagawat said it first. It was said in Karnataka that two third majority is needed to change the Constitution. In Uttar Pradesh, so many from the BJP have talked of changing the Constitution, Kharge said. He asked why PM Modi has not taken any action against those who talk of changing the Constitution. I am surprised that Modi remains quiet on this. You talk of strength and 56 inch chest, why don't you scare them, expel them from the party. One should not say such things against the Constitution, he added. Acusing the prime minister of lying and abusing the Congress party and its leaders, he said, I think he (PM) would have not taken the name of Lord Ram as many times as he abuses Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and the remaining times to Priyanka Gandhi and me, Kharge said. The Congress chief also promised to provide 10 kg free ration per month to the poor if his party is voted to power. If INDIA bloc government is formed, we will provide 10 kg of free ration per month to the poor, he said while noting that the Congress made a law -- the Food Security Act -- to ensure food is provided to the poor. Congress' 'guarantees' will help change lives of women: Sonia Yadav said with the completion of four phases of polling, the lies of BJP have also reached the summit and are now tumbling down. The BJP is stuck in its own negative narrative. When we look back all their promises turned out to be false. Sensing defeat, the BJP people have changed the language in their addresses. The time for negative politics is up and the people of the country want a change which is coming on June 4, Yadav said. The former UP chief minister, who is in fray from the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, said that in Bundelkhand region of the state the BJP will not win a single seat. He also attacked the state government over exam paper leak. While the Congress is contesting on 17 seats in Uttar Pradesh, the Samajwadi Party is from 62 seats. The All India Trinamool Congress, which is part of the INDIA bloc, has pitted its candidate from Bhadohi.

PM urged to prioritize developmental concerns: Kharge Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to talk about development matters rather than other issues in his campaign speeches, and said ''mutton-chicken'', ''Hindu-Muslim'' are his words and not ours. His remarks came after Prime Minister Modi in an interview to News 18 said he won't be fit for public life if he starts playing the Hindu-Muslim card. ''Why is the PM not seeking votes on the work he did in the last 10 years,'' he said at a joint press conference with SP chief Akhilesh Yadav here. On PM Modi's remarks that he has never discriminated between Hindu and Muslim, Kharge responded, ''Had the prime minister not said mutton, beef, chicken, fish and mangalsutra. These words are not mine but his (PM's). ''I am saying that leave these things, tell people about the work you did and seek votes on its behalf. They talk of mutton-chicken not us,'' Kharge said. The Congress chief asserted that the opposition INDIA bloc is in a strong position after four phases of Lok Sabha polls and that the people of the country are prepared to bid farewell to Prime Minister Modi. ''Four rounds of polling have been completed in the country. The INDIA bloc is in a very strong position. I can say with full confidence that the people of the country have prepared to bid farewell to Narendra Modi. INDIA bloc is going to form the new government on June 4,'' he said. The SP chief claimed the alliance will win 79 of the 80 seats in Uttar Pradesh. ''INDIA bloc will win 79 seats in Uttar Pradesh. It is in contest only on just one seat 'Kyoto','' Yadav said referring to the PM's parliamentary constituency of Varanasi. The PM and the BJP have earlier stated that they will develop Varanasi like Kyoto, a picturesque city in Japan. Kharge also claimed that the BJP will change the Constitution if it comes to power again. ''These people are trying to change the Constitution. RSS leader Mohan Bhagawat said it first. It was said in Karnataka that two third majority is needed to change the Constitution. In Uttar Pradesh, so many from the BJP have talked of changing the Constitution,'' Kharge said. He asked why PM Modi has not taken any action against those who talk of changing the Constitution. ''I am surprised that Modi remains quiet on this. You talk of strength and 56 inch chest, why don't you scare them, expel them from the party. One should not say such things against the Constitution,'' he added. Acusing the prime minister of lying and abusing the Congress party and its leaders, he said, ''I think he (PM) would have not taken the name of Lord Ram as many times as he abuses Congress party, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and the remaining times to Priyanka Gandhi and me,'' Kharge said. The Congress chief also promised to provide 10 kg free ration per month to the poor if his party is voted to power. ''If INDIA bloc government is formed, we will provide 10 kg of free ration per month to the poor,'' he said while noting that the Congress made a law -- the Food Security Act -- to ensure food is provided to the poor. Yadav said with the completion of four phases of polling, the ''lies of BJP have also reached the summit and are now tumbling down''. ''The BJP is stuck in its own negative narrative. When we look back all their promises turned out to be false. Sensing defeat, the BJP people have changed the language in their addresses. The time for negative politics is up and the people of the country want a change which is coming on June 4,'' Yadav said.

Chandrababu Naidu denounces attacks on TDP leaders

VIJAYAWADA: TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu strongly condemned the attack on the party candidate for the Chandragiri Assembly constituency by YSRC activists and also denounced the violence in Macherla and Tadipatri Assembly constituencies. He sought the Election Commission of India to intervene and take immediate action. Naidu, who is in Varanasi to accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi in filing a nomination for the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency on Tuesday, called on DGP Harish Gupta and expressed his dismay over the violence in Macherla, Chandragiri, and Tadipatri. He requested the police chief to take action against the perpetrators and instigators of the violence against TDP men and their properties. He said that YSRC MLA Pinnelli Ramakrishna Reddy, in a pre-planned manner, resorted to violence against TDP leaders in Macherla, and requested the DGP to deploy additional forces to maintain law and order. He stressed the need for setting up police pickets in rural areas where instances of post-poll violence were reported. Later, taking to social media platform X, the TDP chief condemned the YSRC activists attack on TDP men in Tirupati. Describing YSRC leaders as cowards, he said that the YSRC was afraid of defeat and resorted to violence. He claimed that as many as 150 men armed with knives and rods attacked his party candidate, who was returning after visiting the strong room in Sri Padmavati Womens University in Tirupati, where EVMs were stored. Meanwhile, TDP state president K Atchannaidu and others condemned the incident. TDP politburo member Varla Ramaiah wrote a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer appealing to the Election Commission to deploy sufficient central forces in Chandragiri, Macherla and Tadipatri where the police department failed to maintain law and order situation. He also demanded the arrest of the culprit leaders who were responsible for the dastardly attacks. Unless these leaders are arrested, there is every danger that the situation will go out of control and lawlessness will spread to other constituencies. Kindly monitor the law and order closely and ensure that post-poll attacks of YSRC leaders are controlled effectively protecting the lives and properties of common citizens, he urged the CEO. On the other hand, Home Minister Taneti Vanitha called DGP Harish Gupta over the phone and brought to his notice that TDP activists are resorting to violence in Chandragiri, Macherla, Tadipatri, and Gurazala. She told the DGP that TDP activists attacked women, people from BC, SC and ST communities for not voting in favour of their party. Vanitha complained that though the attacks were brought to the notice of the police officials locally, no action was taken. She requested for the arrest of those responsible for violence against YSRC members and also sought an action against them. Stating that the police observer appointed by the ECI is acting unilaterally, the Minister held the attitude of the police observer responsible for the violence during and after elections. She observed that ECI transfers of police officials by ECI just based on the complaint of TDP led to the current situation. Will build temples in Mathura, Varanasi if BJP wins 400 seats: Himanta

New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that when the BJP got 300 seats, it built the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and now temples will be built at Krishna Janmabhoomi site in Mathura and in place of the Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi after it gets 400 seats in Lok Sabha polls. He also said that Pakistan-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) will be included in India under the leadership of PM Modi. He further said that during Congress' rule, no discussions were held in Parliament regarding Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. When the Congress government was in power, we were told that one Kashmir is in India and the other in Pakistan. It was never discussed in our Parliament that Pakistan has 'Occupied Kashmir,' it is actually ours. Right now, agitation is happening every day in PoK and people are protesting against Pakistan by holding the Indian tricolour in their hands. If Modi ji gets 400 seats, then PoK will also become India's. It has already started, Himanta added. The Assam Chief Minister also asserted that the BJP government is working to give more strength to reservations. PM Modi himself comes from the OBC category. BJP has been in power for 10 years. Our government is working to give more strength to reservations. Congress wants to end SC, ST and OBC reservations and give reservations to Muslims which they have already started in Karnataka, he added. Earlier, highlighting the protests in the Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday, reiterated that it has been India and will always be, adding that people in PoK must be comparing their situation with those living in Jammu and Kashmir, pointing out the evident progress in the latter region. The Pakistan Paramilitary rangers on Monday, unlawfully deployed in PoJK, gunned down several protestors leaving dozens and several others severely wounded. The incident left several locals of the area injured, as locals in several thousand were out on the streets to raise their demands against taxes on electricity bills, cuts in subsidies and an end to the perks and privileges of the Prime Minister and President.

Modi ko chunautiyon ko taalna nahi, unse takrana aata hai... aur jab hausle buland ho, to bade se bade chunauti ko bhi jhukan padta hai. (Modi does not evade challenges; he confronts them directly. Modi Claims BJP Checked Naxal Violence in Country

New Delhi, Varanasi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday filed his nomination for the Varanasi parliamentary seat for the third time. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath and his proposers, including Ganeshwar Shastri Dravid, who had predicted subh muhurat for the Ram Mandir consecration, accompanied Mr Modi to the collectorate when he filed his papers. Later in the day, the Prime Minister addressed a rally in Jharkhand's Giridih, where he resolved to curb Naxalism in his third term and claimed that the abrogation of Article 370 has brought democracy to Jammu & Kashmir. The BJP-led NDA used Mr Modi's nomination filing in Varanasi as an occasion to show its strength. Senior BJP leaders and Union ministers, along with the leaders of BJP allies including TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu, Apna Dal's Anupriya Patel, RLJP's Pashupati Paras, LJP's Chirag Paswan, Nishad Party's Sanjay Nishad, Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party's O.P. Rajbhar and chief ministers of the BJP and the NDA-ruled states, joined the Prime Minister at the Varanasi collectorate. Lalchand Kushwaha and Baijnath Patel, both OBCs, and Sanjay Sonkar, a dalit, along with Ganeshwar Shastri, are the four proposers of Mr Modi. Mr Kushwaha has been associated with the BJP since its earlier avatar -- the Jana Sangh. Sporting a white kurta-pajama and a blue sadri, Mr Modi reached the district collectorate after a busy morning, which included an aarti on the banks of the Ganga at the Dashashwamedh ghat and prayers at the city's Kaal Bhairav temple. Immediately after filing his papers, the Prime Minister headed for the Rudraksha Convention Centre to address local party leaders and workers. A local spokesperson of the BJP said Mr Modi, during his interaction, gave the party's office bearers the mantra of victory and asked them to make people aware of his government's schemes. Mr Modi also told them to ensure that every booth records at least 370 more votes than it did in the last general election, in celebration of the abrogation of Article 370. After filing his nomination, Mr Modi posted on X, Filed my nomination papers as a candidate for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. It is an honour to serve the people of this historic seat. With the blessings of the people, there have been remarkable achievements over the last decade. This pace of work will get even faster in the times to come. I am honoured by the presence of our valued NDA allies in Kashi today. Our alliance represents a commitment to national progress and fulfilling regional aspirations. We will work together for the progress of India in the years to come, he added. In a separate post in Hindi, the Prime Minister said, Heartfelt gratitude to my family members in Kashi... The love and blessings I have received from all of you in the last 10 years have inspired me to work with full determination. With your support and participation, I will continue to work with new energy for the all-round development of this place and the welfare of the people in my third term as well. Jai Baba Vishwanath! BJP president J.P. Before Mr Modi filed his nomination, the Prime Minister posted in Hindi on X, My relationship with Kashi is amazing, inseparable and incomparable... All I can say is that it cannot be expressed in words! Addressing a public meeting at Jharkhand's Giridih, the Prime Minister said, The Congress forced the nation to Naxalism and destroyed several families, whereas the BJP contained Naxal violence in the country. Asserting that the tribal region of Jharkhand bore the brunt of Naxalism, Mr Modi promised that during his third term as Prime Minister, he will wipe out Naxalism and terrorism from the face of the country. Mr Modi attacked the Congress, accusing it of plotting to send Ram Lala to the tent again. He said: Shameful statements are being issued by the Congress leaders over the Ram temple. Their leaders are plotting to send Ram Lala to the tent once again and talk against the Supreme Court judgement. Alleging that the JMM, the Congress and the INDIA bloc have become the biggest models of corruption, appeasement and dynastic politics, Mr Modi said he has resolved to free India from these vices. The Prime Minister also said that the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir is one of the biggest steps in the interest of the nation and he is happy that the people there celebrated the festival of democracy on Monday after decades. The Srinagar constituency witnessed voting on Monday in the first Lok Sabha election in the Valley since the scrapping of Article 370. He said INDIA bloc leaders are dreaming of digging Modi's grave, but he is well protected with suraksha kavach of love and affection from people. A day earlier, on Monday, the Prime Minister had held a massive roadshow in Varanasi and vowed to do a lot more to serve the holy city in his third term. He spent the night in the city. Beyond the bluster of wild poll promises

Periodic polls are the lifeline of vibrant democracies and an occasion for slugfests between those in power and the opposition. Its a no-holds-barred war of words between the two sides. Impossible promises to the electorate and wild allegations against opponents are routine. In this mad race for power, facts are twisted, arguments are turned upside down, and lies are concocted to spin helpful narrativesusually in acerbic toneseither to expand ones support base or to demonise opponents. The ongoing 18th Lok Sabha election is no exception. The public discourse at present is reeking of toxicity, which is typical of Indian elections. The incumbent Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, seeking a third term, started his campaign by building on his achievements in the last decade and promising a bright future for India. He shared his dream to fully develop the country by 2047, the hundredth year of its independence. PM Modi has a lot to showcase and claim credit for. Arraigned against him is a rainbow coalition of 26 partiesincluding the Congress, Leftists, DMK, TMC, SP and RJDbearing the moniker INDI Alliance. These parties have little in common. They have often used the choicest of expletives against each other in the not-too-distant past. In many states, they are at each others throats, even after the formation of the alliance. The glue that holds the disparate opposition together is their visceral hate for Modi and his vision of India. The INDI Alliance parties had been considering drafting a common programme and holding joint rallies. However, they have failed to do both so far, thanks to their sharp differences on various issues and clash of interests. Among Modis notable achievements are a slew of welfare schemes that have changed the lives of millions of Indians for the better, the restoration of normalcy in strife-torn Jammu & Kashmir following the abolition of Articles 370 & 35A, the development of a Covid vaccine and its successful administration across India, and a massive impetus to the economypushing it to within touching distance of the third slot in the global ranking, from the tenth in 2014. The revamp of Kashi Vishwanath at Varanasi and the reconstruction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya are significant steps in Indias quest to rediscover itself and reclaim its spiritual past. Indias unprecedented progress in development parameters and rediscovery of its cultural roots may appear unrelated at the surface; still, they are part of a single phenomenonthe countrys spiritual renaissance. Rampant corruption, especially among politicians and senior bureaucrats seeping to the lowest rungs of officialdom, has corroded independent Indias administrative set-up for long and wrecked successive governments development plans. Even the best schemes, made with the noblest intentions, came to nought. The then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi estimated that out of the funds allocated, only 15 percent reached the target group, and 85 percent was stolen on the way. Modi stopped it. It was a singular achievement because none of his predecessors could do so. He was innovative, used technology and disbursed money through direct transfers to the bank accounts of millions of beneficiaries. A class of local leaders who doubled as dalals and siphoned off the public funds easily was decimated. More important, there wasnt any discrimination, against or for, any creed, caste or gender in the distribution of these freebies. As a part of their strategy, his detractors (read opposition parties), however, have largely side-stepped the developmental issues. Muslims, who constitute about 15 percent of the electorate, have been repeatedly told that Modi, if voted again to office, would disenfranchise them and reduce them to third-class citizens. Modi is also being painted as an authoritarian out to squash dissent, snuff democracy, upturn the Constitution, and do away with reservations for various vulnerable sections of the societyin vogue since the birth of the republic. There is absolutely no evidence that sustains these allegations. There isnt even a remote hint in any of the BJP documentsmanifesto, party resolutionsor the statements of its top leaders suggesting any such move. The BJPs manifesto celebrates Indias civilisational values, thought, wisdom and traditional knowledge, and seeks to craft policies to further Indias national interests with the spirit of Vishwa Bandhu and a Bharat First attitude. For the BJP, the last decade has witnessed the transformation of India from one of the fragile five to one of the top five economies of the world. The crux of Rahul Gandhi and Congresss electoral campaign, however, is identity politicsseeking to divide the country on the basis of castesomething the party had abhorred in the past. In a letter to chief ministers dated June 27, 1961, Jawaharlal Nehru observed, If we go in for reservations on communal and caste basis, we swamp the bright and able people and remain second-rate or third-rate. I am grieved to learn how far this business of reservation has gone based on communal considerations. It has amazed me to learn that even promotions are based sometimes on communal or caste considerations. This way lies not only folly, but disaster. Let us help the backward groups by all means, but never at the cost of efficiency. How are we going to build the public sector or indeed any sector with second-rate people? But to meet the exigencies of political ambitions, party policies in vogue for long can be buried fathoms deep. The Congress manifesto and statements made by Rahul Gandhi also indirectly speak about the redistribution of national wealth among various sections of societyscheduled castes, tribes, backward classeson the basis of their share in the national population. The plans for evaluation and distribution are lacking in detail. It appears that Rahul is on some sort of a nostalgic excursion, romanticising a bygone era when his grandmother Indira Gandhi successfully sailed to power on the Garibi hatao (eradicate poverty) promise. The result of her policies was disastrous for the country. Most of the commodities of daily use were either in short supply or available in the black market. Will the rich-poor binary, which yielded results in the 1970s, work in 2024? Looks difficult.
