Foreign job scam: Two held in Noida, 104 passports seized

Foreign job scam: Two held in Noida, 104 passports seized With the arrest of two men, the Noida Police on Friday claimed to have busted a gang of thugs that duped money from people on the pretext of helping them get employment in foreign countries. The gang has been operational for about six years now and cheated gullible people by assuring them jobs in countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, police said. The police said they have seized 104 passports and 31 forged visa documents, 36 fake work contracts, among other items, from the possession of the duo, one of whom is a qualified software engineer. ''A team led by ACP 3 (Shavya Goyal) has arrested two accused. During inquiry it has come to light that the gang was making money from people on the pretext of sending them to foreign countries and getting them employment there,'' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Vidya Sagar Mishra said. ''They were using forged visa documents, Aadhaar cards, work contracts. 104 passports have been seized from them. These passports belonged to people whom they were duping. An FIR was lodged against them in Delhi in the past and we are gathering more details about it,'' Mishra told reporters. Ishaq Yunus alias Robin alias Jitendra (30), and Rohit Oberoi (27) were nabbed near Hoshiarpur on Friday by officials of Sector 49 police station team on the basis of a tip-off, police said. During interrogation, it was revealed that Jitendra is the leader of the gang and this work was being carried out by him for the last six years, a police spokesperson said. ''This gang misleads youth with job offers in foreign countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia etc. For this work, the accused takes Rs 80,000- Rs 90,000 from a candidate, and if they find any shortcoming in official papers, they would increase the rate and demand more money from them to fix the issue,'' the official said. The gang promoted its fake consultancy firm using various social media platforms and when a victim contacts them after seeing this advertisement, they are told that if they bring more candidates, their charge would be reduced, the official said. ''After this, in the name of getting jobs abroad, they extort money from the unemployed persons by showing them fake visas and company contracts, they are not given jobs anywhere. As soon as the money was collected, they closed the office and would run away,'' the spokesperson said. The gang has carried out such incidents in the past in Delhi, Haryana and other parts of Uttar Pradesh also, the police said. An FIR has been lodged against the accused, who were produced in a local court which has sent them to jail, the police added.

NTPC Communications Manager Apprehended by CBI for Accepting Rs 8 Lakh Bribe: Officials

NTPC Communications Manager Apprehended by CBI for Accepting Rs 8 Lakh Bribe: Officials The CBI on Friday arrested a senior manager of corporate communications at NTPC for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 8 lakh to pass bills, officials said. The agency arrested Vijay Kumar, a senior manager of corporate communications at NTPC, in Mumbai, where he had flown in from Delhi to receive the illegal gratification, they said. The vice-president of an advertisement company had filed a complaint against Kumar for allegedly demanding a bribe to pass bills worth about Rs 40 lakh, they added. The advertisement company had installed booths in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry in January- February on behalf of NTPC for which it had submitted an invoice of Rs 40 lakh. The work completion certificate was not enclosed as they were to be issued from the local authorities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Puducherry administration, they said. When the company's representative visited local authority offices of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and in Puducherry and requested the issuance of work completion certificates, he was told that an email or call would be required from the NTPC. According to the officials, when the advertisement company vice-president contacted Kumar for communication to the local authorities, he allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 6 lakh on assurance that he would take care of the bills, which would be cleared without any hindrance. Kumar later increased the demand to Rs 9.45 lakh but brought it down to Rs 8 lakh after negotiation, they said. On getting the complaint, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) laid a trap in Mumbai where Kumar was nabbed red-handed taking the bribe. Kumar was later arrested and searches were conducted at his residence in Noida.

Relationship Tips: Know what is emotional intelligence, which is important to have in a relationship.

The happiness of married life depends on love and trust, but it is also very important for husband and wife to have qualities like emotional intelligence. As soon as they enter adolescence, every young man or woman starts dreaming of a good life partner and when he finds a life partner like his dreams, then his relationship becomes happy. Noida-based Divya, an HR manager, talks about their successful relationship, We are both very emotional, but not emotionally weak. My husband is a calm person, whereas I love to laugh and joke. Whenever my husband is under office-related stress, I try to bring him back to normal by making him laugh. This laughter and joking acts as a kind of medicine in our fights and the ups and downs of life. If your life partner is cheerful or cheerful, then most of the problems in life automatically reduce. Happy relationship The life of a husband and wife, who have mutual understanding, love, trust, respect for each other, positive thinking, and maturity, is very beautiful. Only such a relationship is a happy relationship. Reduction in mental stress In such a relationship, it is very important to have a special quality like emotional intelligence. With its help, couples can make any decision wisely despite being emotional and can improve their relationship in the long run. With this, mental stress can also be reduced to a great extent. How to fill sweetness in relationship You should always talk to your life partner in a respectful manner and make the surrounding environment pleasant by laughing and joking. Doing this reduces mental stress. Whenever there is a fight with your spouse, it is normal for your spouse to get very angry, so stay calm at that time, because any decision taken in anger can harm your relationship. If you want to make your relationship happy for a long time, then keep your thinking positive, because negative thinking first of all spoils the relationship. Self-awareness is also important Dr. Varsha Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology, Aryabhatta College, Delhi University, says, along with relationships, you should be emotionally intelligent in life also. If you can control your emotions effectively then your relationship can improve. Apart from this, you should have self-awareness. If you are feeling jealous, find out the reason and how it will affect your reaction. It is important to control your emotions. If you are feeling angry then do not start breaking things, rather calmly express your views. If there is any challenge in the relationship socially, then both of you should be able to emotionally regulate how to face it together. This improves your relationship and also helps you to communicate effectively with your life partner. With effective communication, you can openly share your thoughts with your life partner and express yourself. This solves half the problem itself. (PC: Freepik)

Himalayan 450 & 411 go on a trip: KTM 390 ADV owner shares observations

BHPian Jaggu recently shared this with other enthusiasts. So after a long wait, I finally got my hands on the New Himalayan Sherpa over the weekend. Thanks to ex-mod Khan_Sultan who has picked up one, so along with his Gen 1 Himalayan we did a ride of Uttarakhand hills. Starting from Noida > Abbott Mount > Munsiyari > Almora > Noida. This gave a good mix of all terrains and roads that one would encounter during ownership. These are my notes and the easiest comparison would be with the 390 Adv I own, comparing it to the GSA 1200 (my other bike) would be unfair I guess.Chassis and handlingThis is one area where the bike has really trumped the cards, compared to the old bike, the new Sherpa is leagues apart. Though the bike may feel top-heavy (which it is), it is just a brilliant handler. Almost as nimble as the KTM, but more mature Vs the hooligan nature of the KTM. Personally, I prefer this, slightly heavier feel which gives it a big bike feel. Yes, it will need a little more effort during prolonged curve carving but what a bike! I would give 8.5/10 for this. Even in city use the handling is very friendly as long as you are moving. The larger size of the bike helps with longer visibility and respect from other fellow commuters.SuspensionAgain one of the good things, it's sprung on the stiffer side but kind of takes on any kind of terrain without a fuzz. The bike was running slightly higher pressure since Khan had done a tubeless conversion and wanted to put some buffer during the testing phase. Still, it was pretty good, though at higher highway speeds bike did float a bit, just like the KTM's. Crosswinds were high, so I really can't blame the bike, plus higher pressure. All day sitting at 100-120 Kmph should be a breeze for this suspension.BrakesLook Ma I finally have brakes! We were swapping bikes and moving from new to old Himalayan is outright scary. The new one brakes on the dot, very precise. Add rear brakes and it can be quite grabby also for those emergency stops. Fortunately, we did not have any panic brake situations, but am sure they will work just fine. Regarding the feel of the brakes I would rate the New Himalayan better than the KTM Adv 390.Engine & GearboxThis is one major upgrade, but honestly apart from the power I was not really impressed. The said bike has upgrades done that include 1) Fuel X piggy back 2) exhaust expansion box delete on stock end can and 3) free flow air filter. These mods are 100% recommended! Stock map (at setting 3) bike feels vibe like hell, left pegs vibrate more than the right, so it is not even vibed lol. Even a 20-30 kms on the stock map was downright irritating on the plains. Move the setting to 8 and the bike just transforms, not only does the initial response improve by two fold, but the vibes reduce to a very very acceptable level. I think it is the new BS6 norms that are the culprit here. If they sort this, the engine would be a lovely one. Mind you, it is not a high-revving 12k rpm motor like KTM. Just let the revs goto about 6-7 k RPM and work through that smooth gearbox for a fun-filled ride. People who are used to Gen 1 Himalayan gearbox would take some good time to get used to the nature of the new 6-speed box. One has to really work it and keep the engine in the right revs to have some good pace.Side standYes, this needs a special mention under the flops! Thanks to the design of the central stand and placement, the side stand is weirdly bent. It looks cool, but the bike ends up being too low on the side. Add the top-heavy nature, and the bike is a real pain in the arsu, rather than legs and hands to lift up. If there is a slight incline to the left, then you are done! with some luggage on top, well you can dial a friend for help. One of the worst designs one can have on a touring bike. Khan is contemplating removing the central stand and designing a longer more upright side stand, which is the level of pain. For me being used to the big fat cow, could manage. But trust me if you are of small build and for fellow lady riders, this could be a real downer while making the purchase decision.Rider fittingRoyal Enfield really needs to learn here. This bike has a riser fitted so the handlebars were kinda sorted. But hello if you need to adjust the switch gear to sync up with new handlebar position or even lever positions, you can't! The switch gear has a small plastic locator stub, that goes into a corresponding hole at the bar end. Smart Alecs in RE never thought that people actually need to adjust levers and switch gears for comfort and safety. Yes, one can file off the plastic stub and then tighten the switch console back while adding some 3M tape, but how lame can this be??!! Next is the gear lever, the lever end is almost 1/4 inch taller than foot pegs (with rubber), with riding boots one has to lift legs and kick the lever down More impressive is the way in which the lever is attached to the shifter rod. The adjustment is as old school as it can be, one has to remove the whole pedal off the splines and reinsert it. Which is fine, but once you remove the bolt the lever just refuses to come out. You will need a lever or thick screwdriver to be shown inside the clamp side and spread the hole to get it off. We did not have this, so had to put back the bolt and ride on with that awkwardly positioned lever. Compared to this the old Himalayan has a nice adjustable link which can be used to set the lever position by undoing the bolt with an open 10 mm spanner! Seats though they are firm (my liking), are not comfortable over long rides. Not even as comfy as the bare bench 390 adv. The reason being 1) the seat is tilted and one will land up sliding down. 2) The bigger issue, the rear part of the front seat which is wide and where your bum should be... the scoop of the plastic base pokes the bum hard exactly there. The cushion just doesn't have any place to flex and the plastic eventually leaves its mark on your bum. This can be fixed by a good seat guy, and Khan is planning for something.Overall verdictI loved it minus the engine! but what Khan has done has kinda made it good. This can be a good one-bike solution for 200-400km/day touring and city use. I would not dare say, it can compete with 800 to 1200 cc bikes, that would be just Khayali pulao (wishful thinking), but is a good ead economical alternative... if you don't want to spend a fortune, procuring even preowned big bikes that cost more. Is it a KTM Adv killer? Not really, coz the character is very different. This bike may not really be to the liking of younger or a real fast rider if you ask me. KTM is much more refined and polished overall and a hoot to ride. Will I trade my KTM Adv 390 for this? Well yes if someone offers a flat exchange to my bike with this. But I will definitely get those tweaks copied from Khan's bike. PS: A big thanks to Khan_Sultan for letting me ride this beauty and his old Himalayan! Love you bro and this was yet another awesome ride. Classic example of side stand, the old Himalayan wouldn't park proper at this incline if it's facing the other way around like Sherpa. Which is the way it should be. Where as Sherpa nicely sitting down even with raised road bank on that side. Also to lock the steering to opp side to lift the bike off, you will need some serious muscle thanks to the front and top heaviness of the bike. Check out BHPian comments for more insights and information.

Attendance takes a hit in Delhi schools day after bomb scare

New Delhi: A day after more nearly 200 schools received hoax bomb emails, educational institutions in the city witnessed a slightly lower attendance, even as principals revisited evacuation plans for such emergencies in the future.Around 200 schools in Delhi-NCR Wednesday morning received a hoax bomb threat via email which led to widespread panic among parents and students, prompting authorities to suspend classes and ask parents to pick their wards from the school. Many schools on Thursday reopened to normalcy but attendance has taken a hit even in schools where the threat was not received, principals of some schools told PTI. Jyoti Arora, principal of Mount Abu School, said she revisited the school's evacuation plan on each floor and also wrote to disaster management authorities to conduct mock drills and awareness activities for them. She said that there was slightly more absenteeism than usual on Thursday. I wrote an email to parents telling them to counsel their children and in case they need help from school counsellors, they are also available. I also requested parents to assess their reaction in case of such situations, Arora said. She said some parents were pushing the gates and some were insisting on taking their children out of turn. I told them, 'I have 2,700 children to take care of', she told PTI. Even in that situation, Arora said she asked teachers to hand the children over after properly checking the IDs of parents, taking their signatures. Children were also asked to confirm the identities of their parents, she said. Sudha Acharya, principal of ITL Public School in Dwarka, said parents were still scarred and anxious about the safety of their children in schools. Our attendance today has dropped to 85 per cent from an average of about 95 to 97 per cent daily. Certainly parents are still scarred and anxious about the safety of their children. Yesterday itself we had ensured parents that there is nothing to worry about. We didn't get anything on our official email ID, Acharya said. Acharya, who is also the head of the National Progressive Schools Conference, a body of 250 private schools, said her counterparts in other institutions have also said the attendance is on the lower side. For instance, in nursery and KG classes, the attendance is around 80 per cent since there is some fear among parents. But the situation is normal, she added. There has been a 10-15 per cent drop in attendance due to the hoax threat compared to the usual strength every day. Parents should understand panicking would not help anyone. We need mutual cooperation to walk out of this situation, Anita Khosla, principal, G D Goenka Public School, Dwarka said. Schools now plan to issue a fresh advisory to parents asking them to send their children for classes and assuring them that all guidelines for handling bomb threats are being followed by the administration. They said school premises are now properly sanitised and police are constantly monitoring the security and safety of students and staff. However, some parents escorted their wards to the schools on Thursday. My daughter's school did not receive any threat email, but the school was shut early due to panic among parents. Thankfully, the school opened at normal time today, said Nancy Singh, mother of a class 1 student in Ramagya School in Noida, Sector 50. Others went to school due to the ongoing exams. I was under the impression that the schools will declare a holiday even today but they didn't because exams are going on. I brought my child to school only because of the exam otherwise I wouldn't have. Deep inside we are still sacred for their security and there are a lot of rumours doing rounds, said Preeti Chaudhary, mother of a class 9 student at Mothers Mary School, Mayur Vihar. Delhi Police made an appeal to people on Thursday to not believe in audio messages that have surfaced on WhatsApp groups making false claims about the bomb threat.

Delhi School Bomb Threats Were Emailed By Russian Domain With Arabic Word

Panic, chaos over bomb scare in Delhi schools

NEW DELHI: As many as 131 schools in Delhi, five in Gurugram and three in Noida and Greater Noida were forced to evacuate their students on Wednesday morning after receiving emails that mentioned explosives being planted on school premises. Within a few minutes, the police in the national capital and its surrounding areas swung into action even as they kept receiving PCR calls from schools, one after another. Fire brigades were alerted and cops from almost every police station in the city began rushing to the schools in need. Simultaneously several teams of bomb disposal squads were deployed which launched search operations. School authorities informed the parents about the development that gripped the city residents in panic and parents rushed out to know the well-being of their wards. Before mounting the search operation for explosives, the police personnel first cordoned off the entire compound of every school. The children were handed over to their parents while the senior class students were allowed to go home. For several hours, the police along with bomb disposal squads kept scanning the schools, but couldnt find anything. By 11 am, the cops were sure enough to announce that the threats were a hoax. Security personnel inspect a classroom at DPS in Noida Some Delhi schools received emails about bomb threats. Delhi Police conducted thorough checks of all these schools as per protocol. Nothing objectionable was found. These calls seem to be a hoax. We request the public not to panic and maintain peace, a senior police officer said. The MHA also said that there was no cause for alarm. It seems to be a hoax call. Delhi Police and security agencies are following the standard protocols and taking appropriate measures, said the MHA in a statement. According to data gathered by this newspaper from different police districts, 24 schools received the threat email in east Delhi, 21 in west Delhi, 15 in south Delhi, 22 in Shahdara, eight in each in southwest Delhi, including Dwarka, five in Rohini, two in North and one in northeast Delhi. The figures from the rest of the districts were yet to be counted. Meanwhile, the Special Cell of Delhi Police has registered a case under relevant sections of the IPC and investigation will be conducted by its Counter Intelligence Unit. The NIA may also take up the probe since the role of a terror group is suspected and the conspiracy angle may lead to a pan-India investigation, an official said. Bomb threat to over 130 schools in Delhi-NCR sparks massive scare; Police probing terror angle

Bomb threat to over 130 schools in Delhi-NCR sparks massive scare; Police probing terror angle In a bomb scare of unprecedented scale, over 130 schools in Delhi-NCR received an identical threat email on Wednesday claiming that explosives had been planted on their premises, triggering massive evacuations and searches as panic-stricken parents rushed to pick up their children. ''Nothing objectionable'' was found during searches by authorities which later declared it a hoax. Officials said that the initial probe suspected a ''deeper conspiracy'' by a terror group during the Lok Sabha elections, adding that there is suspicion that the threat mail was sent by an ISIS module. The Delhi Police's anti-terror unit special cell has traced the domain of emails to Russia and it is suspected to have been formed with the help of the dark web - an encrypted online content that allows individuals to hide their identity and location from others. The National Investigation Agency may also take up the probe since the role of a terror group is suspected and the ''conspiracy'' angle may lead to a pan-India investigation, an official said. Law enforcement authorities went into a tizzy as police and fire services started receiving a flurry of calls from schools at 6 am on Wednesday. Delhi Public School (Mathura Road), DPS (Saket), Sanskriti School, Amity School (Saket), DAV (Model Town), DPS (Dwarka) and St. Mary School (Mayur Vihar) were among the education institutions that received the threat email on Wednesday. A senior Noida Police official told PTI that the email threat was received in seven schools in the satellite city. It was only an hour or so since parents had dropped off their children when they received messages from the school authorities informing them about an e-mail threatening the safety and security of the students. Parents rushed to pick up their children and school authorities scampered to bring the students to safety, moving them outside the buildings, while police personnel with sniffer dogs sanitised the premises. With over 130 schools receiving the bomb threat via email, Delhi Police faced a daunting task as it rushed its dog and bomb squads from one school to another and there was no time to be wasted. The city police went into an overdrive and the situation lasted till evening. Police said that the number of schools that received the threat may go up as they were compiling the list. According to a police officer, the email ID from which the threat was sent is 'sawariim@mail.ru'. Sawarim is an Arabic word extensively used by the terror outfit Islamic State (IS) in their propaganda videos over the past several years, the official said. ''Kill them wherever you meet and drive them out of the places from which they drove you. There are many explosive devices in the school...,'' reads the identical email sent to all schools. The officer said that the email also contained ''aayate (verses) of the holy Quran''. ''The main agenda of sending such threat emails in bulk is to create panic and wage a cyber war by some terror group,'' an officer, who did not wish to be named, said. A case has been registered under relevant sections of law for offences like conspiracy and threat by the Special Cell and a dedicated team formed to conduct the investigation, an official said. Security has been stepped up at all metro and railway stations, bus stands and markets in the national capital. Noida resident Monika Arora, whose son studies in Class 12 in DPS-Noida, said, ''My son had left for his extra classes at 6:30 am. Around 8 am, we received a message about a threat e-mail. ''The school authorities asked the parents whose children travel by private taxis to get them picked while those who come in school buses were being sent back.'' Rukesh Kumar, whose daughters study in two different schools in east Delhi, said students were evacuated by teachers. ''Some students climbed up trees saying they would be saved if there was an explosion. Some tried to hide in safe places,'' Kumar said. Several schools said they were able to carry out a swift evacuation of the students and staff, but dealing with the parents was a challenge. Some schools also said they plan to issue a circular for parents, outlining the standard operating procedure to guide them on how to react in adverse situations like these. ''We hold frequent evacuation drills to prepare students for situations like an earthquake or other natural calamities. So handling the students was not a problem as our children are trained on how to react during such situations. It was the parents who panicked and were difficult to manage,'' Sudha Acharya, principal, ITL Public School, said. The Gurugram Police also remained alert and police and bomb disposal teams visited various schools, including DPS schools in sectors 102 and 103, and conducted searches. No suspicious object was found anywhere, the police said. Several schools kept sending updates to the parents through messages on WhatsApp groups. Meanwhile, the Delhi government issued an advisory for schools, asking them to ensure that the e-mails received at their official e-mail addresses are checked timely. ''In view of the current situation wherein bomb threats were received by a few schools of Delhi in the early hours of the morning of 01.05.2024, it is advised that School Administrators/Managers /Heads of Government/Government Aided and Unaided Recognised Schools under the Directorate of Education, GNCT Delhi should ensure that emails/messages received on official email id of the school at any time of the day (before, during or after school hours) are checked timely,'' read the advisory issued by the Directorate of Education. Lt Governor VK Saxena said that Delhi Police has traced the origin of the threat emails. He assured that the culprits would be given strict punishment.

Delhi-NCR Schools Face Mass Bomb Threats, Turned Hoax

New Delhi: At least 100 schools in the Delhi-NCR area received identical bomb threats by email on Wednesday, triggering mass evacuations and large-scale searches as panicked parents rushed to pick up their children. The threat was declared a hoax as nothing objectionable was found during searches. The Union home ministry said the bomb threats turned out to be a hoax. The Delhi government has, meanwhile, issued an advisory to schools asking them to ensure that emails received at their official email addresses are checked timely. Police sources said the email the schools received had the same source, suspected to be sent from Russia, aimed at creating panic. They added it was also possible that culprits may have masked their identity using the DarkNet. The special cell anti-terror unit of the Delhi police will investigate the bomb threat. The case is being registered with the special cell and a dedicated team will be formed to conduct the investigation. The matter is related to national security. It needs a deeper probe, the official said. The police will also probe foreign involvement, including of the Islamic State. Some schools of Delhi received emails regarding bomb threats. The Delhi police has conducted thorough checks of all such schools as per protocol, the Delhi police said in a post on X. Nothing objectionable has been found. It appears that these calls seem to be a hoax. We request the public not to panic and maintain peace, it said. The police said the content of the email to every school was the same, adding that it was sent from a user with email id, sawariim@mail.Ru. Kill them wherever you meet and drive them out of the places from which they drove you. There are many explosive devices in the school... reads the identical email sent to all schools. The investigation so far has revealed that Sawariim (clashing of the swords) is an Arabic word, which has been used by the Islamic State since 2014 to spread Islamist propaganda. Thus, the police is investigating if there is a conspiracy of any organisation behind these threatening emails Sources claimed that a single IP address was used to send the email to all schools. The police received at least 131 PCR calls regarding the bomb while the Delhi Fire Service got over 109 calls from different schools. They started receiving calls about the bomb threat at 6 am, an officer said. An official said that DFS also received calls even after noon and firefighters are still on the ground. Multiple private schools in Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Gurgaon also received the bomb threat, but the local police dismissed them as a hoax. The bomb threat was received in 16 schools in Outer district, 24 private schools in East Delhi, 18 schools in South Delhi, 21 schools in West Delhi and 10 schools in Shahdara, four in Northeast Delhi and several schools in other areas too. Special CP (Crime) Ravinder Yadav said: These emails were received in several schools. Some hospitals also received these emails on Tuesday. Thorough checking was done Even if it was a hoax call, we cannot take chances. We will conduct an investigation. Earlier in the day, the Union home ministry said there was no need to panic as the threat appeared to be a hoax. It said the Delhi police and security agencies were taking all the necessary steps as per protocol, it said. The Delhi police said it has conducted a thorough check of all schools that received the bomb threat but found nothing. Delhi lieutenant-governor V.K. Saxena visited one school and said that the Delhi police has traced the origin of the threat emails. Delhi education minister Atishi said nothing was found in the schools and requested parents not to panic. We are in constant touch with the police and schools. Would request parents and citizens not to panic. The school authorities will be in touch with parents wherever needed, Atishi said in a post on X. Parents and guardians rushed to the schools to pick up their children. The school administrations made announcements on the microphone as parents rushed to collect their wards. Fire tenders, ambulances and lines of police vehicles were seen on standby outside the schools, while bomb detection teams and bomb disposal squads were conducting searches inside the schools.

FEATURE-Vote or work? Tough call for India's 'invisible' migrant workers

FEATURE-Vote or work? Tough call for India's 'invisible' migrant workers * Migrant workers skip voting to save wages, jobs * Migrants risk exclusion in policy-making * Remote voting mechanisms a must, urge campaigners By Annie Banerji NOIDA, India, May 1 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - To go back home in eastern India, cast his vote and spend time with his wife and three children would be ideal, said Shafiq Ansari, but he cannot afford to lose wages and so has to keep toiling under the sweltering summer sun near New Delhi. Ansari is far from alone. Many millions of migrant workers across India face a similar dilemma as voting takes place in the world's biggest election, with nearly 1 billion people eligible to vote until June 1. Results are due by June 4, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi predicted to win a rare third term. For those like Ansari, a road building labourer from Jharkhand state earning 600 rupees ($7) a day in the satellite city of Noida, the costs of voting are high - from leave without pay, threats of wage theft and job loss to lofty travel expenses, including the expected gifts for family members. If I could get free (train) tickets and paid leave, I would go. But since that is not happening, I will stay and hope for the best, said Ansari, 37. We are here out of compulsion. It is just for work ... because we could not find anything back home, he said, gesturing to about 30 of his fellow migrant labourers, who mostly hail from the impoverished eastern states of Jharkhand and neighbouring Bihar. All the men echoed Ansari, saying they would not go back to cast their votes this month as it would mean losing at least 4,000 rupees ($48) in two days' lost wages and travel costs. In Noida, they can earn as much as 24,000 rupees in a month. The Thomson Reuters Foundation spoke to another two dozen migrant workers in and around New Delhi, with only four saying they would go back to their home town to vote. Of those four, three said their towns were relatively close so it would only cost them a day's wage and a few hours' of travel time. While the number of internal migrants in India has not been updated in official figures for more than 10 years, experts say they could make up as much as 40% of the electorate. According to the latest available figures, albeit from 2011, India's then population of 1.21 billion people included 456 million internal migrants. Their number has likely increased by another 150 million, said S. Irudaya Rajan, chairman of the International Institute of Migration and Development think tank. Migrants are still invisible in our country's policies and programmes, Rajan said. He observed that neither the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nor its rivals had debated or discussed the COVID-19 migrants' crisis in their campaigns or rallies. An estimated 100 million migrants were among the worst hit by a strict lockdown in early 2020, which led to an exodus from cities. Many workers walked home, their adversity unfolding live on television and making global headlines. It can't be a memory lapse. This happened only four years ago, said Rajan. This just indicates that nobody is bothered about them. RURAL DISTRESS Rajan described most migrant workers as short-term, seasonal, distressed, illiterate and informal, making it difficult for them to organise and fight for their rights. He warned that without their say in elections, it could exacerbate their exploitation, and limit their bargaining power as they are left out of key decision making. The problem is that migrants are not treated as a vote bank despite their great contributions to the economy ... This needs to be fixed, he said, urging the creation of a ministry for migrant affairs. Internal migration is bound to intensify in the world's most populous nation as economic slowdown hits rural India, home to 60% of its 1.4 billion people, according to migration and economic experts. Many, especially those under 35, flock to the cities to take whatever jobs they can - becoming labourers, drivers or helpers in shops and homes - to tap into the country's spectacular economic growth and the prosperity of its urban areas. Benoy Peter, the executive director of the Centre for Migration and Inclusive Development in the coastal state of Kerala, warned that people engaged in farm-based jobs could face rising pressure from climate change, which hurts harvests and fuels debt, forcing them to migrate. He said that if there were enough well-paying jobs at home, most would not opt o be treated as second-class citizens in the urban centres of India. People can live with dignity, exercise their agency if they have decent-paying jobs at their native places. But that is going to be a remote dream, he said. In the last general election in 2019, more than 300 million people did not vote - migrant workers likely made up a huge proportion of those, according to government data. In the first and largest phase of this year's general election, voter turnout dipped by nearly four percentage points compared to 2019, according to data. M. Venkaiah Naidu from the BJP cautioned in an op-ed days after that voter apathy could automatically allow others to dictate the course of their lives. REMOTE VOTING? All the migrant workers said it was neither feasible to drop everything and go home to vote, nor possible to change their voting constituency to their place of work since most of them hop from place to place doing temporary jobs. India's election panel has been working on alternative voting mechanisms, including proxy voting, early voting at special centres and online voting. It has also considered remote polling stations that would mean migrant workers would not have to travel back to their home district to vote. But these methods have not been implemented due to administrative, legal and technological challenges, including ensuring secrecy of voting. The Election Commission of India did not respond to repeated requests for comment on voting solutions for migrant workers. Most, barring two migrant workers, said they would not vote online or via smartphone apps even if given the choice, citing chances of manipulation. I cannot trust (technology). My thumb needs to push that button, said Binita Ahirwar, a labourer at a Delhi-based cardboard box factory, referring to buttons on electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in India. Ahirwar, 32, said she was not going to go to her home state of Madhya Pradesh to vote over job loss fears. But not everyone is choosing to sit it out. For Kaju Nath, a building labourer in Noida, voting is a responsibility, and to fulfil it he said he had informed his boss in advance about taking a week off to travel some 1,100 kms (684 miles) to Bihar. I will lose about 10,000 rupees ... but at least I will vote for a better future. There are no industries, no factories, no jobs in my state, and I need to vote to change that, he said as he clapped cement dust off his hands. I have to do this for my children, so that by the time they grow up they can have jobs there. They should not have to do what I am doing. ($1 = 83.3303 Indian rupees)

Likely to be hoaxes, says Delhi Fire chief after over 80 schools receive bomb threats

Likely to be hoaxes, says Delhi Fire chief after over 80 schools receive bomb threats Director of Delhi Fire Services Atul Garg on Wednesday said that email bomb threats received by over 80 schools in the Delhi-NCR area today were most likely hoaxes. Many schools sent their students home after receiving the threat mails that triggered panic among parents. We have received more than 80 calls in Delhi only. There were calls about bomb threats, and we responded to all the calls and sent fire tenders to all the locations. But some schools have started sending their vehicles back. I believe all these calls are likely to turn out to be hoaxes, Garg said. Garg emphasized that it is critical to attend to every call, even if it might be a false alarm, as safety is the top priority. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said it appeared to be a hoax threat and that there was no need to panic. Every call was attended; we can't take chances with any call. If we receive a call, we have to attend to it. So, we attended all the calls. Since I received the information around 8 AM, I immediately alerted all the stations, and all the officers in our stations are ready to move wherever required. We have postponed other work, Garg said. The Fire chief also appealed to the public to remain calm and assured them that the fire department is well-prepared to handle any emergency. There's no need to panic, he said. We are fully prepared. As some schools have already sent their vehicles back, I think these calls are all false and likely the work of miscreants attempting to create panic, Garg said. Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena said that he had sought a detailed probe from the Delhi Police Commissioner. He had earlier visited a school in north Delhi after news of the bomb threat. Delhi Police's Special Cell has initiated an investigation but nothing suspicious has been found yet, said police officials. According to sources the initial investigation revealed that that the email address, used to send the threat mail to over 80 schools in Delhi-NCR had a Russian domain. However, the Police are yet to ascertain whether the email actually originated from Russia. The police is now tracking the IP address of the email address. Sources have told ANI that these kind of emails are usually send using a VPN connection to enable the sender to mask the original IP address. The Cyber team is confident of tracing the IP address. Sources in the investigation team also say that the Dark Web could have been used to send the threat mail. The Noida, Ghaziabad, and Delhi police are conducting a joint investigation to address the situation. As news of the threats spread, the Delhi Government's Directorate of Education issued a statement confirming that no dangerous devices or suspicious activity were found in any of the affected schools. Delhi Police PRO Suman Nalwa confirmed that nothing suspicious was found at any of the schools during investigation. Several schools have approached us that they have received an email regarding a bomb in their campus. Delhi Police has conducted search operations but nothing untoward has been found so far...It seems someone has done this to create panic...I just want to request the parents to not get panicked. We are conducting an investigation regarding the same, the Delhi Police PRO said. Ravinder Yadav, Special CP, Delhi Police Crime Branch, said, These emails were received in several schools. Some hospitals also received these emails yesterday. Thorough checking is going on. Bomb Disposal Squad, Dog Squad and fire tenders are present here...Even if it is a hoax call, we cannot take chances. We will conduct an investigation... All schools in Delhi-NCR to which threat emails have been sent have been closed as a precaution, and the children have been sent back. (ANI)

Threat mail to Delhi schools sent using Russian domain, Cyber Police tracking IP address, location

Threat mail to Delhi schools sent using Russian domain, Cyber Police tracking IP address, location After over 80 schools across Delhi-NCR received a bomb threat via email on Wednesday morning the investigation agencies suspect that the email originated from a server located in Russia, sources said. Sources say a single IP address was used to send the email to all schools. The Cyber team of the Delhi Police has also joined the investigation. Sources have told ANI that these kind of emails are usually send using a VPN connection to enable the sender to mask the original IP address. The Cyber team is confident of tracing the IP address. Kondliborder village where farmers protest crippled normal life

NEW DELHI: Panic gripped Delhis border area Kondli earlier this year when farmers of Punjab announced a protest march to the national capital over unmet promises by the Centre. To halt the march, a thick layer of security was put in place in Kondli, its roads barricaded and routes diverted, leading to the crippling of normal life. Several residents say they now suffer from the geographical location of their assemblyDelhi-UP border. Kondli is a village on the outskirts of the Trans-Yamuna region of Delhi. It is situated near the UP border and is very well connected to Noida and Ghaziabad. Its residents have been complaining of issues like robbery, womens safety, drug abuse, sanitation, pending regularisation of the colonies and infrequent supply of water. It doesnt matter which party comes or whichever candidate wins from our assembly, as things have never changed here. The basic amenities like infrastructure, water, sanitation, and sewerage are in bad shape, as well as the law and order problem, one of the residents, Shailendra Singh, said. Demography Owing to the multilingual composition of the population, Kondli resembles a metropolis with people of diverse tongues. Besides Kondli, the assembly also includes New Kondli, a resettlement colony that came into existence after 1990. It lies adjacent to Mayur Vihar Phase - 3, Noida sector-11 and Vasundhra Enclave. In the last seven major elections, AAP has won three times, BJP led the elections twice, and Congress also twice. Kondli recently came into the limelight when Chief Minister Arvind Kejiwals wife Sunita, on April 27, held her maiden poll roadshow here in support of the AAPs East Delhi candidate, Kuldeep Kumar. The BJP has fielded Harsh Malhotra, the general secretary of Delhi-BJP unit. The Lok Sabha polls will be held in delhi on May 25 with counting on June 4.

COVID-19 vaccine manufacturer AstraZeneca has acknowledged that in rare cases the vaccine may cause side effects in some people, leading to an increased risk of thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS). Since this news came out, many types of fear have been seen in the minds of people. Especially those who have taken the Covishield vaccine are worried whether this vaccine will increase their risk of heart attack or brain stroke. AstraZeneca has admitted in a British court that in rare circumstances these vaccines can increase the risk of 'TTS' disorder which causes blood clots in the body. It is noteworthy that most of the people in India have received AstraZeneca's Covishield vaccine. Bengaluru sees highest increase in rental yields

NEW DELHI: Among the top metro cities, IT-dominated Bengaluru had the highest rental yields at 4.45% in the first quarter of CY24 (Jan-Mar). Mumbai came next with 4.15% in the same quarter, followed by Gurugram at 4.1%, showed real estate consultancy firm Anarock data. The data showed rental values in Bengalurus key areas have been rising inexorably after IT companies return to office call. The citys rental yield in pre-Covid 2019 stood at 3.6%, which amounts to a growth of 24% in this period. Mumbais rental yield was 3.5% in 2019 and Gurugram was at 3.5%. Residential rental yields in India had chronically stagnated before the Covid-19 pandemic, with the national average at just 3% for many years, says Santhosh Kumar, vice-Chairman ANAROCK Group. With post-pandemic rental demand soaring after offices resumed, rental yields are heading north too. IT-dominated cities including Bengaluru, Gurugram, Pune, Noida, and MMR have seen major upticks in rental values, and therefore yields. In the prominent localities of the top 7 cities, there has been an average jump of 4-9% in residential rents in Q1, 2024. Considering that the typical annual rise is 5-10%, this is significant and while it bodes well for landlords, it signifies a worrisome element of cost of living inflation for tenants. The data showed that in Sarjapur Road (Bluru), the average monthly rent in Q4, 2023, stood at Rs 31,600 for a standard 2 BHK flat of 1,000 sq. ft. In Q1, 2024, it went up to Rs 34,000 month. Whitefield saw average monthly rents going up from Rs 30,200 in Q4, 2023, to Rs 32,500 in Q1 2024, an 8% jump.
