How to get bejewelled balloters to the booth

South Bengaluru, south Chennai, south Delhi, south Mumbai, south Kolkata. There is something special about the southern parts of Indian metros that makes the affluent stay there. Quite the contrast from the laggard Global South. The problem with what we might call Indias Urban South is that they dont like lifestyle disruptions like voting at elections. We have seen that this year in the constituencies of Chennai South and Bengaluru South, both of which saw less than 55 percent voters showing up. I am tempted to bet their Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai counterparts may try to match them in low turnouts. Not even the talk of a never-proposed but much-disposed inheritance tax may shake them from their electoral slumber, unless you think out of the ballot box. About 15 years ago, a friend listed in jest 10 reasons why Mumbai Souths elite voters didnt show up to vote in 2009. Two reasons stood out: no valet parking, and they didnt want to stand in the same queue as their household help. Youve got to say bye-bye to voting if you spot your bai out there. In the best tradition of Indian-style innovation, I am thinking of ways to end such apathy. While at that, I am also intrigued by the tendency of Indians in general and the affluent in particular to splurge or lose money through various endeavours while hating the thing called tax. Its not a condition peculiar only to India. The Beatles sang in their 1966 song, Taxman : Now my advice for those who die (taxman) / Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman) / Cause Im the taxman / Yeah, Im the taxman / And youre working for no one but me (taxman). Even before the Fab Four, Bollywoods Kishore Kumar sang in 1954: Kuchh income tax le jaata hai / Kuchh beewi udaati hai (Some money is taken away by income tax / and some blown up by the wife). Later, in 1970, when tax raids happened on film stars, he sang: Nagad naayan ke sab yaar / In sabke pichhe pad gaya income tax / Are bam-bam naache Kishore Kumaram (Everybody is a friend of the god of bucks / The income tax is after their backs / and Kishore Kumar dances bam-bam). But then, tax and voting are different things for celebrities. These days movie stars vote in style. Queues are bent for them so they can do the celeb act: posing for cameras in designer shades with ink on their forefingers. For all we know, they might be imagining showing a middle finger to politicians, but what we see is what we think we get. But stars and tycoons need to be treated with deference to make them part with cash. The poor can be made to part with cash through offerings made to astrologers and priests in exchange for the fulfilment of their wishes. The middle class can be had with get-rich-quick schemes in everything from unreliable chit-fund schemes to dud shares, and if they are techno-hip, through cyber frauds and crypto scams. The truly rich wont fall for all this. Some of them got rich in the first place by partly or wholly trying some of the tricks mentioned above (occasionally described in boardrooms as strategy). We need to reverse-swing this whole business with some designer jugaad . We need to take a leaf out of their books and charm them into doing unto the taxman what some of them do unto their clients and, sometimes, shareholders or bankers. What I suggest to counter electoral apathy in the Urban South is a Premium Voting Lounge, much like those fancy corners in airports or plush hotels. You have to pay so that you dont have to stand in queues, certainly not with your helps. You have sofas in air-conditioned waiting areas. The electronic voting machines flash a welcome message after a welcome drink. And yes, you can pose for a selfie with your EVM and pay a service charge (GST extra). Valet parking, of course, is included. There you have it. Farmhouse parties in Delhi and bashes in Malabar Hill will never be the same again. Page 3 smiles and Instagram videos will complete the picture. Bejewelled balloters will happily part with a lakh or two if they are told that voting is not an act of duty but a style statement. I can imagine Ms Chopra in South Delhi doing a pre-election photoshoot as well. If she is complimented later about having lost weight, she might even reply: You see, I have been exercising my franchise. Diamond and platinum brands are well advised to sell this idea to the powers that be. Fingers are meant to hold expensive rocks, not just press an EVM button. An election symbol can now be transformed into a status symbol. If the Unique Identification Authority cooperates, designer Aadhaar cards with filter-fixed photos wont be a bad idea either, though immigration officials may object. The wealthy are not fools who part easily with their money. They would rather pay for a holiday home they will never stay in, or do a 50-50 deal with a suitable deity than pay inheritance tax. The government is well advised to hire consultants of the premium variety to do something about this. Smart consultants dont come cheap. IPL 2024: Bumrah sparks in fading Mumbai as KKR win at Wankhede after 12 years

CHENNAI: On Thursday, both T Natarajan and Sandeep Sharma, the two best Indian pacers not named Jasprit Bumrah in this year's edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), showcased their wares to perfection. On Friday, it was Bumrah's turn to show exactly why he's the undisputed figurehead. Coming into the game against the Kolkata Knight Riders, it was safe to suggest that the Mumbai Indians weren't themselves. Speculation had been rife that a leadership change had led to a divided house. Batters punching below their weight, spinners being ineffective and overseas bowlers not pulling their weight... You get the drift; it has not been a good campaign. But that principle doesn't apply to Bumrah, whose artistry shined once again. Under a floodlit Wankhede, he was divine. It was rather poetic that he started his innings the way he finished yorker targeting the stumps. When you watch a yorker in real-time, it can look deceptively simple. In reality, it's an extremely hard skill to master because of the margins at play. In his column for the International Cricket Council's (ICC) website in 2017, Shane Bond had written: One of the things I keep getting asked is whether bowling the yorker is becoming a dying art. I don't think so it is just that the yorker is being used differently, and bowlers are also experimenting with a range of slower balls. The yorker is not just one of the most difficult balls to bowl, the margin for error is also extremely small. Therefore, it becomes vital to use that weapon judiciously, the Kiwi speedster wrote. The margin is about 30 centimetres from approximately 22 yards out during your delivery stride after running in. Misalign it by a few centimetres on either side of that 30-cm mark and you will travel. Not if you are Bumrah, though. The control he has on the yorker is unusual for it's almost always on the money. The few times he fails to hit the mark, it's usually a low full toss, another difficult ball to get away. Over the last few matches Sunil Narine has played, bowlers have tried to home in full onto his pads. Some have overpitched it, others have conceded wides. Not the 30-year-old. His first ball to Narine is full and straight and the opener just about got an inside edge. He followed it up with another yorker that the West Indian squeezed away for a single. His next two balls to the southpaw were different; one was going away with the angle and the other was a bouncer, which pinged his helmet. There's a set pattern to how Bumrah has been used this year. One over in the powerplay, one in the middle phase and two at the death. If ever Pandya had to break that pattern, it was now. Kolkata, on a fresh but two-faced strip, had lost half their side for 57 just after the powerplay. The visitors used 'break glass in case of emergency' option Manish Pandey as an Impact Sub to steady a boat in danger of being shipwrecked. He last played in this format last year. Alas, Pandya stuck to the template and allowed Pandey and Venkatesh Iyer to stitch an 83-run stand. When he brought back Bumrah in the 14th over, they had already grown in confidence as Pandey ramped him for a six over third man. His third spell, though, splattered the stumps a few times, as both Mitchell Starc and Venkatesh had lost their stumps to deliveries out of a video game (magical, basically). He also snaffled Ramandeep Singh to return with figures of 3/18 in 3.5 overs. The problem, though, came from other sources. He has taken 17/274 across 11 games while averaging 16.11 at an economy of 6.25. The others have not been fit for purpose: Pandya (8/297 at 37; 11), Gerald Coetzee (13/341 at 26.2; 10.17), Nuwan Thushara (4/156 at 39; 10.40), and Piyush Chawla (5/222 at 44.4; 9.25). The other bowlers have frequently neutralised Bumrah's brilliance. It happened against Kolkata too. The others combined to concede 150 in 15 overs. Brief scores: Kolkata 169 all out in 19.5 overs (Venkatesh 70, Manish 42; Bumrah 3/18, Thushara 3/42, Hardik 2/44) beat Mumbai Indians 145 all out in 18.5 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 56; Mitchell Starc 4/33).

IPL 2024: A Special Win, Says Spinner Varun Chakravarthy As KKR Beat MI At Wankhede After 12 Years

Kolkata Knight Riders: Conceding that his team looked down and out despite a fighting 70 by Venkatesh Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy said the 24-run victory over Mumbai Indians was special as it was their first win at Wankhede in 12 years. Jasprit Bumrah (3-18) and Nuwan Thushara (3-42) claimed three wickets apiece at each end of the KKR innings as Mumbai Indians restricted them to a paltry 169 despite brilliant fighting 70 off 52 balls by Venkatesh Iyer, who raised 83 runs for the sixth wicket in the company of Manish Pandey, rescuing their team from a precarious 57/5 at one stage. Chakravarthy praised Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey for pulling them to 169 which they eventually defended. This is a very special win because we were down and out in the first innings. The way Venkatesh and Manish pulled it back was great, said Chakravarthy at the presentation ceremony. Mitchell Starc claimed 4-33, bagging three wickets in four balls in the 19th over to end Mumbai's innings for 145 after spin twins Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy had reduced them to 61/4 with identical 2-22 hauls. Suryakumar Yadav waged a lone battle raising Mumbai Indians' hopes with a 35-ball 56, raising 49 runs for the seventh wicket with Tim David (24) before Andre Russell (2-30) and Mitchell Starc ended Mumbai's innings, sharing the last five wickets between them. Extremely good feeling, because we haven't won at Wankhede for 12 years. It was just a matter of one wicket (when David was batting and had brought down the equation to 26 off 11 balls], said Varun Chakravarthy. He said bowling in the second innings was very tough the dew made gripping the ball difficult. He said the wicket had also improved and the ball was not stopping and turning as it did when KKR batted. There was dew, but somehow we controlled our emotions. Second innings there was not much help (for the spinners) because of the dew. The batters did tell that the ball was stopping and turning. But when I came on to bowl, I realised it wasn't stopping, he said. Chakravarthy called fellow spinner Sunil Narine a legend as both of them finished with identical figures of 2-22 off four overs, bowling in tandem to start Mumbai Indians' downfall.

DC Edit | Probe complaint on governor

A controversial case of sexual harassment following a complaint lodged by a female contract staffer of the Raj Bhavan in Kolkata has come at a most sensitive time in the affairs of West Bengal when the state is going through a multi-phase Lok Sabha election. The legal implications are hard to fathom as a governor, as functioning head of state in a high constitutional post, enjoys immunity from criminal proceedings. But it is not as if governors have not been caught in compromising situations or positions. Given the caustic nature of West Bengal politics, which is an extreme case of bristling Centre-state relations, there is no knowing whether it is a motivated complaint or governor C.V. Ananda Bose represents the patriarchal side of the general misogyny that rules the country. It would be in the fitness of things to say that anyone occupying high constitutional office should, like Caesars wife, be above suspicion and his/her behaviour must be so impeccable as to be way above the casting of the least aspersion in terms of sexual behaviour. Governors may be politically active as is an extreme trend these days, particularly in Opposition-ruled states, but there should be little room for anyone even to say there cannot be smoke without fire when a woman comes forward with a police complaint of sexual harassment. In fact, it is people in power who appear to be the most inclined to be cavalier when it comes to their dealing with women. The case of the Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna, grandson of a former Prime Minister, acutely reflects how authority tends to prevaricate when it comes to acting by the book against those wielding some form of political power. What the #MeToo movement of the 2010s that sprang up in the US taught most was that any complaint of sexual harassment of a person of any sex must be thoroughly investigated, no matter how high his or her place in society or in the rungs of authority. A big attitudinal change must come about in men, who are more often accused of being perpetrators of sexual harassment, with those accused of such deviant behaviour forced to face probes and clear their names if they are innocent. It is not so much the law as the test of morality that must be passed to show men can control the beast in them.

IPL 2024: Pandya Blames Lack Of Partnerships For Mumbai's 24-run Defeat To KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders: Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya blamed his batters' inability to forge partnerships for their 24-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 51 of the Indian Premier League despite a brilliant effort by his bowlers at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. Mitchell Starc claimed 4-33, claiming three wickets in the 19th over to end Mumbai innings for 145 after spin twins Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy had reduced them to 61/4 with identical 2-22 hauls. Pandya said the lack of partnerships undid the super effort by the bowlers and it will take time to find answers to the questions raised by their dismal performance throughout IPL 2024. Obviously we couldn't form partnerships and kept losing wickets. There are a lot of questions that will take time to answer. But for now, not much to say, said Hardik at the post-match presentation. He said though the wicket played better in the second innings and there was dew too to make it tough for the KKR bowlers, he will have to go through the game again to see what they can do better. Bowlers did a fantastic job on this track. The wicket got better if I'm not wrong. Dew came in the second innings. Will go through the game and see what we can do better. Asked what his team can do now with their chances of qualifying for the Playoff virtually hanging by a thin thread, Pandya said they will continue fighting. You keep fighting, that's what I keep telling myself. It's challenging, but you take the challenges, he signed off. Mumbai Indians have six points from 11 matches now and the maximum they can reach is 12 points if they win the remaining three matches. With four teams already scoring 12 or more points, and two with 10 points with matches to play, their chances of qualifying for the next stage look very bleak.

We don't need to learn about women's security from BJP: TMC's Abhishek

We don't need to learn about women's security from BJP: TMC's Abhishek TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee on Friday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for raising questions on security of women in West Bengal, while alleging that BJP leaders were involved in incidents of torture of women. He cited NCRB report which pronounced Kolkata as the safest city in the country. ''You (PM) come to Bengal and talk big about torture of women and their safety but you have leaders like Brij Bhushan Singh against whom wrestlers had brought sexual harassment charges. ''Modi ji has nominated Singh's son for the Lok Sabha polls from UP... BJP has also given a ticket to the person whose son had driven a car into protesting farmers, killing several of them, in Lakhimpur Kheri. And yesterday, a little sister working at the Raj Bhavan lodged a police complaint against the governor alleging molestation. Do we need to learn about women's safety from these people?'' Banerjee said. The Trinamool Congress national general secretary, while speaking at a rally in Raniganj, also referred to Modi participating in a rally in support of JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who has been accused of sexually abusing women. Banerjee also criticised Modi for holding rallies with party leaders who are referring to ''Bengalis as Rohingyas, Muslims as Pakistanis and Sikhs as Khalistanis''. ''Have you noticed their language?... and Modi ji is holding election campaigns making these people sit next to him... those of believe in the politics of hate and division will be ousted from West Bengal,'' he asserted. Banerjee also urged Modi to release a ''White Paper'' detailing the funds allocated by the Centre to West Bengal under the PM Awas Yojana over the past three to four years. Banerjee said that if Modi could prove that the Centre has provided a single penny to West Bengal for the scheme, he would cease campaigning for TMC candidates in the ongoing Lok Sabha election. ''The central government has conspired not to release funds for the people of West Bengal. I would urge the PM that instead of giving lectures, he must release a 'White Paper' detailing the funds disbursed to the people of West Bengal for the Awas Yojana,'' Banerjee added.

Right-handed batter Milind, who scored 1331 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, had before that played seven seasons for Delhi and then migrated to the USA in search of better opportunities. West Bengal Governor Maintains Innocence Amid Molestation Allegations

West Bengal Governor Maintains Innocence Amid Molestation Allegations West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose, who is facing allegations of molesting an employee of the Raj Bhavan, said on Friday that the truth will come out in the case and he will have the last laugh. Describing the allegations against him as a storm in a teacup, Bose, who was in Kerala on Friday, said there was no issue between him and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and they have a very friendly relationship. However, he indicated that all the issues are created by a senior leader in her party but added that he had not tried to find out who that is. ''I am telling the people of Kerala with my head held high and boldly that I will have the last laugh,'' he told news channels. He said, ''This is just a storm in a teacup. When I took charge in Bengal, I knew it was not a bed of flowers. I went there determined to face everything.'' ''It's not a 100-metre dash but mountaineering. Truth will come out. I will not bow down before anyone because Kerala nurtured me, and I have the confidence and honesty imparted from here. I will face everything in Bengal and come out victorious,'' Bose said. Bose had on Thursday said in Kolkata that he would not be cowed down by ''engineered narratives'' and the ''truth shall triumph'' after TMC leaders claimed that a woman working at Raj Bhavan levelled allegations of molestation against him. His statement came after senior TMC leaders claimed in a series of social media posts that the woman, who had levelled the allegations, has been taken to a police station to complain against Bose. Police officials said they received a complaint and are looking into it. Senior TMC leader and Industry Minister Shashi Panja on Friday said that the party has no agenda and no role behind this.

Modi Mocks Rahul for Contest from Rae Bareli, Taunts India Bloc

Kolkata : Painting a gloomy picture of two key INDIA partners in the ongoing Lok Sabha Election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi predicted on Friday that neither Trinamul Congress can win more than 15 seats nor Congress would make a half century in the tally of seats across the country. Mr Modi, who addressed three BJP poll campaign rallies at three different parliamentary constituencies his highest in West Bengal so far also took a swipe at Congress scion Rahul Gandhi for his Lok Sabha poll contest from Rae Bareli seat instead of Amethi where he had lost in 2019 and sarcastically told him, Daro Mat, Bhaago Mat (Don't panic, Don't run away. On the INDIA partners fate, the PM said at Tehatta in Krishnanagar of Nadia, Who can form a government of the country? TMC can't even win 15 seats in the entire country. Now you tell me if TMC can form the government with just 15 seats! It is also difficult for the Congress this time to make a half-century irrespective of their efforts. He added, Can they form a government when they can't get 50 seats? Once the sun didn't set for the Left here. Now the red flags are not visible. They have been lying crushed. It is only BJP-led NDA which can form the government. Mr Modi then came down heavily on the Gandhi family hours after its scion Rahul Gandhi, presently Wayanad MP, was fielded by the Congress at Rae Bareli. In a veiled jibe at UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, the PM remarked, I had stated in the parliament when polls were two-three months away that their biggest leader would not dare to contest the polls and would run away out of fear. She fled to Rajasthan and from there made entry to the Rajya Sabha from there. That is what happened in fact. Mocking Mr. Gandhi who is going to contest the polls from a seat earlier vacated by his mother, Mr. Modi claimed, I also said earlier Shehzade going to lose at Wayanad and because of fear of losing in Wayanad, he will start looking for a third seat the moment voting ends there. He pointed out, Now all of his close aides started talking about his contest from Amethi. But he panicked so much that he ran away from there also and is now looking for a road at Rae Bareli. These people keep going around telling public Daro Mat. Today I am also telling them with a lot of happiness: Are Daro Mat, Bhaago Mat. The PM alleged, The Congress is set to be decimated in lesser number of seats that they got last time as they are contesting in few seats. The country has also understood that these people are not fighting the polls to win. He further tanuted the INDIA partners, claiming that all of them have been in a race to become the main opposition against the BJP. Reiterating his tirade against the TMC over violence against women in Sandeshkhali, Mr Modi earlier played the Hindutva card while speaking at Bardhaman-Durgapur parliamentary constituency. He referred to Bharatpur TMC MLA Humayun Kabir's recent threat to send the bodies of Hindus flowing at the Bhagirathi river in Murshidabad and wondered, What kind of political culture is this? The PM alleged that such threats showed that the Hindus have been reduced to second-class citizens in Bengal under TMC rule. On the School Service Commission job scam which led to the termination of 25,753 appointments of state education department staff including teachers by the Calcutta High Court last month, the PM pledged to support the meritorious candidates who were affected by the order. He informed that he has ordered the state BJP leadership to open a social media window and enlist the names of those candidates who had got the jobs because of their merit and not by paying a hefty amount of money to the TMC leaders.

IPL 2024: Venkatesh Iyer Hits 70, But KKR Shot Out For 169 As Thushara, Bumrah Claim Three Each

Ilandari Dewage Nuwan Thushara: Venkatesh Iyer struck a fighting half-century but Mumbai Indians rode on three-fers by pace duo Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara to bowl out Kolkata Knight Riders for 169 in Match 51 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium here on Friday. Thushara justified skipper Hardik Pandya's decision to bowl first by claiming three wickets in his first two overs. With Pandya and Piyush Chawla chipping in with a wicket each, KKR were 57/5 soon after the Power-play. But Venkatesh Iyer played a brilliant, controlled knock to score 70 off 52 balls and raised an 83-run partnership with Manish Pandey (42) for the sixth wicket to take them to 140. However, Bumrah claimed three wickets off 18, two of them in the same over, to hasten KKR's downfall as they managed a paltry score. The name Ilandari Dewage Nuwan Thushara -- is a mouthful for anyone. On Friday, the Sri Lankan pacer with a slingy bowling action that reminds of Mumbai Indians legend Lasith Malinga, proved a handful for Kolkata Knight Riders batters. The 29-year-old landed three lethal blows in his first spell of two overs, sending back the dangerous Phil Salt (5), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (13) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (6) as KKR slumped to 28/3 in three overs. Thushara has claimed only one wicket in the three matches he has played for MI this season. But Friday proved his day as he opened the bowling and struck the first blow in the opening over itself. Salt smashed the third delivery of his first over down the ground for a four but after bowling a wide down the legside, Thushara had his revenge as he got the ball to nip away off the pitch and Salt, attempting to play it past midwicket, gets a leading edge behind point where Tilak Verma pouches it despite a collision with Naman Dhir. Raghuvanshi hammered Thushara for a six, lifting him over midwicket as the bowler drifted onto the pad -- the first over costing 14 runs but more importantly Thushara claimed the first wicket. Raghuvanshi hammered the Sri Lankan for another six off the first ball of his second over but Thushara had his revenge off the next ball, as he changed the line and cut down the pace, getting the batter to pop a simple catch to Suryakumar Yadav at cover. Shreyas Iyer struck a four off the first delivery he faced and a double on the second before spooning a catch to Tim David at mid-on while trying to flick a fullish delivery of this pads, beaten for pace this time. Hardik Pandya brought himself into the attack and was carted for a huge six by Sunil Narine off his first delivery. But the Mumbai Indians skipper had his man off the next delivery as this time he out-thought the West Indies batter with pace and bowled him. KKR were struggling at 57/4 after the Power-play and it became 57/5 when Piyush Chawla foxed him with a slower one as the batter chipped it back to the bowler for a simple catch. Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey, brought in as an Impact Substitute for Raghuvanshi, revived the innings with an 83-run stand, starting cautiously before unleashing some super shots to boost the scoring rate. Venkatesh started by hitting two fours off Gerald Coetzee in the fourth over and took a four off Naman Dhir. After a spell of slow batting, he exploded into action in the 12th over, hammering a four and a six off Coetzee, the maximum over extra-cover fence executed quite well. He reached his half-century off 36 balls, studded with five boundaries and a six. The experienced Pandey, who tonked Bumrah for a four and six in three balls in the 14th over, hammered Pandya over long-on for another six but fell soon after as Hardik sent down a slow cutter wide off off-stump and the Karnataka batter was caught by substitute Brevis at extra-cover. Pandy made 42 off 31 balls, hitting two fours and as many sixes, but did his job in his first outing as he helped KKR recover from a precarious position. Disaster struck KKR when Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell, after hitting a six each off Pandya, got into a horrendous mix-up, resulting in the West Indies dasher getting run out. Venkatesh Iyer continued to propel the KKR innings but Bumrah expedited their demise by landing two blows in the 18th over, sending back Ramandeep Singh and Mitchell Starc with two superb deliveries. From 140/5, the Knight Riders slumped to 155/9 and their innings finally ended with a ball to spare when Bumrah beat with an un-hittable delivery as he lost his balance and fell over, trying to flick him to the boundary. Only three KKR batters managed to reach double figures as the Mumbai Indians bowlers used the conditions perfectly to get themselves into a strong position to score their fourth victory in IPL 2024, Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 169 all out in 19.5 overs (Venkatesh Iyer 70, Manish Pandey 42; Jasprit Bumrah 3-18, Nuwan Thushara 3-42, Hardik Pandya 2-44) against Mumbai Indians.

Kunal Ghosh has caused more damage than opposition: Partha Chatterjee on Ghosh's school jobs scam remark

Kunal Ghosh has caused more damage than opposition: Partha Chatterjee on Ghosh's school jobs scam remark Former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee on Friday launched a scathing attack on TMC leader Kunal Ghosh, saying that the latter has caused more damage than the opposition and should have been expelled from the party much earlier. Kunal Ghosh should have been expelled from the party long ago. He has caused much more damage than the opposition. After coming to jail, I came to know about the heinous activities done by Kunal, he said. Partha Chatterjee's comment comes after Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh on Thursday said that the TMC was aware of the school recruitment scam, adding that that is the main reason why the TMC party removed Partha Chatterjee from the Education Department in 2021. One month ago, I had asked the party to release me from my duties. I was also on the star campaigners' list, but now I am not. The party has given a chance to new faces, this is a good thing... The party had information for a long time that something was wrong in the job recruitment case. This is why Partha Chatterjee was removed from the Education Department in 2021. If the party had seriously intervened in the matter, job seekers wouldn't have to face any trouble. We could have stopped the system from going uneasy, Ghosh told ANI. In 2022, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the West Bengal Education Minister and TMC leader Partha Chatterjee in connection with the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) teacher recruitment scam. Chatterjee is currently lodged at the Presidency Correctional Home. After being spotted at a blood donation camp alongside the BJP's Kolkata Uttar candidate Tapas Roy, where he sang his praises, Kunal was promptly removed as the TMC general secretary. An official communication to this effect was issued by the Mamata Banerjee-led party on Thursday. In the official communication following his removal as general secretary, the TMC said the views he expressed at the public event did align with the party's position and shouldn't be attributed to it. Rinku's Rise Continues, Impresses Sourav Ganguly

Rinku's Rise Continues, Impresses Sourav Ganguly Rinku Singh shouldn't be disheartened by his exclusion from India's World T20 squad as it was pure tactical decision by team management to ask for an extra spinner taking pitches in the Caribbean into account, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly said on Friday. Ganguly feels the 26-year-old, who boasts of a 176-plus strike rate in 15 T20Is and plays the role of a finisher for Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL, may have missed out as India wanted to go with an ''extra spinner'' keeping in mind the spinning tracks in the West Indies. ''It's West Indies. The wickets may be slow and assist spin so they (selectors) wanted to go with another spinner. Maybe because of that Rinku didn't get an opportunity but it's just the beginning for Rinku,'' Ganguly said at the Trophy unveiling ceremony of the Bengal Pro T20 League. India play their group stage matches in the USA, opening their campaign against Ireland on June 5. Super Eight onwards the tournament will be held in the Caribbean countries. Ganguly expected India and Australia to dominate the tournament as they did in the 50-over World Cup last year. ''India and Australia the two best teams of the tournament. I'm sure they will do the same thing in the USA and the West Indies,'' Ganguly said. On the Indian squad, Ganguly said: ''It's a fabulous squad, they are all match winners. All 15 are good enough to be selected, I'm sure Rohit (Sharma) and Rahul (Dravid) will pick the best.'' Meanwhile all the eight franchises and their marquee players in the Bengal Pro T20 League were also announced. Have asked BJP to form separate legal cell to provide help to genuine teachers in SSC scam: PM Modi

KOLKATA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the West Bengal BJP unit to create a separate legal cell to provide help to genuine teachers and candidates who have lost jobs due to the School Service Commission (SSC) scam. While addressing an election rally at Burdwan-Durgapur, PM Modi said that although he wants those involved in corruption by the TMC to be punished, he does not want the innocent to suffer. The corruption that the TMC has done in Bengal regarding the school recruitment is shameful. Due to this scam, several genuine candidates have suffered. I have asked the Bengal BJP unit on behalf of the party to create a separate legal cell and social media platform to provide help to the genuine candidates and teachers, he said. Modis remark drew sharp criticism from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who said that after taking jobs from people, he is now trying to portray himself as a saviour. As elections are going on, just to garner support from the people, Modi is saying that he will help the genuine SSC candidates. Where was he when the Calcutta High Court gave the order? We have said we will help all the candidates and will see in due course of time whether or not the appointments madewere legal or illegal, added Banerjee. BJP will support such honest candidates and will provide them legal help and will fight for them. This is Modis guarantee, stressed the PM. Calcutta HC cancels 2016 SSC teachers' recruitment panel; almost 24,000 jobs affected Modis remarks came a week after the Supreme Court declared that whether it is possible to separate between legal and illegal appointments. Soon after this remark, SSC chairman held a press conference and said, They will see whether they can separate between legal and illegal appointments of SSC. Calcutta High Court declared the recruitment process of the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools as null and void, ordering the cancellation of all appointments made through it. Around 26,000 people have lost jobs following the court order. On 22 April, theCalcutta High Courtdeclared the entire panel of the 2016 SSC recruitment null and void due to identified irregularities in appointments across various educational sectors in the state. Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Shabbar Rashidi, comprising the division bench, unequivocally invalidated all appointments made through the 2016 state-level test conducted by the West Bengal SSC. The court mandated the administration to initiate fresh appointments within a 15-day timeframe. This resulted in the immediate job loss of teachers and non-teaching staff. The courts decree extends further, necessitating individuals appointed under the invalidated process to refund their salaries within a stipulated six-week period. HC order on Bengal school jobs 'illegal', will challenge: Mamata What is the 2016 SSC scam in Bengal The purportedWest Bengal School Service Commissionstems from the inception of the teacher hiring procedure in state owned schools through the State Level Selection Test (SLST) in 2014 with the recruitment officially starting in 2016. In 2016, the West Bengal government released a notification for the employment of 13,000 Group-D staff in state operated schools. Multiple petitions were lodged in the high court asserting discrepancies in the scandal. Allegations surfaced that numerous candidates with lower scores were ranked higher on the merit roster, prompting doubts about the integrity of the selection process. Furthermore, accusations emerged suggesting that individuals not listed on the merit roster received appointment letters. The recruitment exam was conducted to fill vacancies for the posts of assistant teachers for Classes 9-10, assistant teachers for Classes 11-12, Group C (clerks) and Group D posts. On 24 April, the West Bengal government under Mamata Banerjees leadership took the step to approach the Supreme Court, contesting the decision of the Calcutta High Court. This ruling revoked nearly 24,000 appointments of both teaching and non-teaching personnel, which were conducted through the 2016 SSC recruitment process. Reacting to the HCs verdict, Banerjee said, The court verdict cancelling all recruitments is illegal. We stand by those who lost jobs. We will ensure you get justice, and challenge the order in a higher court. However, quick relief to those affected is unlikely soon.

5000 km road trip in my Tata Altroz iTurbo: Mumbai to Kolkata and back

BHPian Mgdoodler recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Blue Rocket had plans for 2023, which 2023 decided were not to come to fruition. On charts was to travel to Khar Dung La and Kanyakumari sometime between June and Sept 2023 but due to some personal circumstances all long-distance plans were abandoned. Or so we thought. Thanks to my cousin, who was marrying the love of his life in her city in Dec 2023. Invitations were issued and the plan initially was to make a quick visit to Kolkata for a couple of days for the event itself which then turned into a week's solo drive to Kolkata and back and in the end, turned into a 15-day holiday with Blue Rocket travelling through 6 states and the rest of my family flew to Kolkata for wedding festivities. As per my usual practise Blue Rocket was serviced and a checkup done 15 days before my travel and I drove it for a couple of short excursions around Mumbai. Plan was to take the Mumbai - Nagpur - Sambhalpur - Keonjhar - Kolkata route through central India while going and return via Konark - Vishakhapatnam - Chhattisgarh - Hyderabad - Mumbai. This was my first time driving any of these routes and my first time meeting the Bay of Bengal. As with most of my long-distance drives, this was just Blue and me all the way. FYI Blue Rocket is a petrol, manual i-turbo Altroz.Day 1- 1/12/2023 FridayThis was a day I was looking forward to the most, the opportunity to drive on the Samruddhi Mahamarg. I have already driven on the Trans Haryana and enjoyed it and was looking forward to a similar experience. Left home at 6:45 am - much later than the planned 5:30 am, but I was ok with it as there was a mild fog and starting later allowed better visibility. Travelled across Mumbai via the SCLR and eastern express highway leaving the city behind at Thane, but not the traffic, roads were jammed due to diversions and the first couple of hours were tedious. First stop was to fill fuel at Padgha. Tank filled and the drive started towards Kasara ghat which I would be driving on for the first time and it was a good drive. Stopped for a quick breakfast at 10:30 at a restaurant after Ghoti Bhudruk at 150 kms from Mumbai and 7 kms before Bharvir entry into the Mahamarg. The mahamarg is wide, well planned and mostly a comfortable drive. Speed Limit for cars is 120 Kmph and it is possible to maintain the same comfortably. Heavy vehicles are few and keep to the middle and left lane. It was a pleasure to drive on this route. I stopped at approximately halfway at around 3 pm for a fuel refill and bio break. I also stopped at about 1.5hrs of driving on the mahamarg for a quick photo session with Blue being the model. As you can see the weather was lovely with blue skies and fluffy white clouds - a perfect winter day for a drive and the road is practically empty. Road surface could be better and more functional rest stops are required. Hopefully, these requirements will be fulfilled soon. It was later in the day after 4:30 pm and as we neared Nagpur, I encountered some truck traffic in the fast/overtake lane and middle lane at the same time blocking the road. But it was not for long. Crossed Waifal toll naka at 5:30 PM, having covered 600 kms in approx. 6 hours with a 20 min break. Winter and travel towards the east meant that the sun set earlier and it was already dark as we exited the Expressway and made our way to the night stay - Hotel Pride near the airport metro. Reached and checked in at 6:30 pm. Covering 814 kms in little less than 12 hours. The day had not ended though. After a quick catch-up with work, I headed towards the nearest Haldirams at Ajni Square. Travelled by metro for 4 stops and exited just outside Haldirams. My last meal had been a protein bar along with a yoghurt smoothie at 3 pm and now I feasted on Dahi Puri and hot Rajma Chawal. Dinner done I took the metro back to my hotel and turned in for an early night. Continue reading about Mgdoodler's road trip for BHPian comments, insights and more information.

Mamata lashes out at Bengal governor for 'misconduct' with woman employee

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Friday lashed out at Governor C V Ananda Bose for his alleged misconduct with a woman employee of Raj Bhavan. Speaking at a public rally in Purba Bardhaman district, Banerjee said my heart bleeds for the woman molested at Raj Bhavan and termed it a shame. Yesterday, a young woman who worked at Raj Bhavan came out and spoke against the Governor's harassment. Yesterday, the tears of the woman broke my heart. I have seen her video testimony. Before talking about Sandeshkhali, BJP must answer why the Governor did this to a woman working at Raj Bhavan, she said. Woman accuses West Bengal Governor Ananda Bose of sexual harassment Banerjee also wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi who came to Raj Bhawan last night didn't speak a word on the issue. The woman cried and walked out saying she was too scared to work at Raj Bhavan anymore. She said that she was called at odd hours and was subjected to harassment. And these are the people who talk about the dignity of our mothers and sisters? she said. The TMC supremo alleged that the BJP was responsible for so many people losing their jobs in the School Service Commission case. West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose on Thursday said he will not be cowed down by engineered narratives and the ruth shall triumph after TMC leaders claimed that a woman working at Raj Bhavan levelled allegations of molestation against him.
