How to get bejewelled balloters to the booth

South Bengaluru, south Chennai, south Delhi, south Mumbai, south Kolkata. There is something special about the southern parts of Indian metros that makes the affluent stay there. Quite the contrast from the laggard Global South. The problem with what we might call Indias Urban South is that they dont like lifestyle disruptions like voting at elections. We have seen that this year in the constituencies of Chennai South and Bengaluru South, both of which saw less than 55 percent voters showing up. I am tempted to bet their Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai counterparts may try to match them in low turnouts. Not even the talk of a never-proposed but much-disposed inheritance tax may shake them from their electoral slumber, unless you think out of the ballot box. About 15 years ago, a friend listed in jest 10 reasons why Mumbai Souths elite voters didnt show up to vote in 2009. Two reasons stood out: no valet parking, and they didnt want to stand in the same queue as their household help. Youve got to say bye-bye to voting if you spot your bai out there. In the best tradition of Indian-style innovation, I am thinking of ways to end such apathy. While at that, I am also intrigued by the tendency of Indians in general and the affluent in particular to splurge or lose money through various endeavours while hating the thing called tax. Its not a condition peculiar only to India. The Beatles sang in their 1966 song, Taxman : Now my advice for those who die (taxman) / Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman) / Cause Im the taxman / Yeah, Im the taxman / And youre working for no one but me (taxman). Even before the Fab Four, Bollywoods Kishore Kumar sang in 1954: Kuchh income tax le jaata hai / Kuchh beewi udaati hai (Some money is taken away by income tax / and some blown up by the wife). Later, in 1970, when tax raids happened on film stars, he sang: Nagad naayan ke sab yaar / In sabke pichhe pad gaya income tax / Are bam-bam naache Kishore Kumaram (Everybody is a friend of the god of bucks / The income tax is after their backs / and Kishore Kumar dances bam-bam). But then, tax and voting are different things for celebrities. These days movie stars vote in style. Queues are bent for them so they can do the celeb act: posing for cameras in designer shades with ink on their forefingers. For all we know, they might be imagining showing a middle finger to politicians, but what we see is what we think we get. But stars and tycoons need to be treated with deference to make them part with cash. The poor can be made to part with cash through offerings made to astrologers and priests in exchange for the fulfilment of their wishes. The middle class can be had with get-rich-quick schemes in everything from unreliable chit-fund schemes to dud shares, and if they are techno-hip, through cyber frauds and crypto scams. The truly rich wont fall for all this. Some of them got rich in the first place by partly or wholly trying some of the tricks mentioned above (occasionally described in boardrooms as strategy). We need to reverse-swing this whole business with some designer jugaad . We need to take a leaf out of their books and charm them into doing unto the taxman what some of them do unto their clients and, sometimes, shareholders or bankers. What I suggest to counter electoral apathy in the Urban South is a Premium Voting Lounge, much like those fancy corners in airports or plush hotels. You have to pay so that you dont have to stand in queues, certainly not with your helps. You have sofas in air-conditioned waiting areas. The electronic voting machines flash a welcome message after a welcome drink. And yes, you can pose for a selfie with your EVM and pay a service charge (GST extra). Valet parking, of course, is included. There you have it. Farmhouse parties in Delhi and bashes in Malabar Hill will never be the same again. Page 3 smiles and Instagram videos will complete the picture. Bejewelled balloters will happily part with a lakh or two if they are told that voting is not an act of duty but a style statement. I can imagine Ms Chopra in South Delhi doing a pre-election photoshoot as well. If she is complimented later about having lost weight, she might even reply: You see, I have been exercising my franchise. Diamond and platinum brands are well advised to sell this idea to the powers that be. Fingers are meant to hold expensive rocks, not just press an EVM button. An election symbol can now be transformed into a status symbol. If the Unique Identification Authority cooperates, designer Aadhaar cards with filter-fixed photos wont be a bad idea either, though immigration officials may object. The wealthy are not fools who part easily with their money. They would rather pay for a holiday home they will never stay in, or do a 50-50 deal with a suitable deity than pay inheritance tax. The government is well advised to hire consultants of the premium variety to do something about this. Smart consultants dont come cheap. Rape Case Filed Against Prajwal Revanna

Bengaluru: A rape case has been filed against the JD(S)-BJP alliance candidate for Hassan Lok Sabha seat Prajwal Revanna, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said on Friday. The case was filed based on a complaint by H.D. Raju, the 20-year-old son of a victim who worked as domestic help at Revanna's house. The victims son also complained that his mother was abducted by Prajwal's father and JD(S) Holenarasipura MLA H.D. Revanna and his confidant Satish Babanna. Based on Mr Rajus complaint, who is a resident of Hebbalu Kopppalu in Krishnaraja Nagar taluk of Mysuru district, the K.R. Nagar police station has filed separate cases against Mr Revanna, son of former Prime Minister H.D. Devegowda, and Mr Babanna. It may be recalled that Mr Revanna is co-accused along with his son Prajwal in a sexual harassment case after a victim had filed a police complaint against them at Holenarsipura town police station. The case is being investigated by the state CID's special investigation team (SIT). The victim in the case, who is a mother of three children, was allegedly abducted by Holenarasipura MLA and Mr Babanna from her home in Krishnaraja Nagar town in Mysuru district, police said. In the complaint to the police on May 2, Mr Raju alleged that, acting on the direction of Mr Revanna, Mr Babanna abducted his mother and she is being forcibly held at some unknown location. The victims son also informed the police that his mother worked as domestic help at the Revannas house for about 6 years. About 3 years back she left the job, returned to the village and worked as a daily wager. He alleged: A couple of days back, Mr Babanna took her mother to meet Bhavani, wife of Mr Revanna, at their Holenarsipur residence in Hassan. During the meeting, my mother was warned by the Revannas not to disclose anything to the police. She was told that she will have to face a police case if she revealed anything to the police. The complainant also told the cops that some videos showed that his mother was allegedly tied and raped by Prajwal. Reacting to the complaint, Mr Siddaramaiah said he has directed the police to identify, trace and secure the victim. Supporting the complainants, he said, Will a woman lie that she has been raped? Won't her life be destroyed after the complaint? If a married woman says openly that she has been raped, then we have to accept it. Meanwhile, according to a police source, the state police have arrested Mr Babanna and are interrogating him in connection with the case. In a related development, Karnataka home minister G. Parameshwara on Friday said that a second notice has been served to Mr Revanna in connection with the cases of molestation and abduction registered against him.

Heavy rush in Chennai airport

Chennai: The hustle and bustle at the Chennai airports domestic terminal has increased of late as more and more people are taking flight from the city in view of the broiling heat with various airlines operating a plethora of special summer services to different destinations like Thoothukudi, Madurai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Those leaving for destinations within the State like Madurai and Coimbatore are mostly headed to salubrious hill stations like Kodiakanal and Ooty and the others, too, are travelling with families with different places to take a break from the sultry weather that is becoming unbearable day after day. According to airport sources about 40 special flights are being operated from Chennai over and above the regular services, leading to the heavy rush since morning hours at the airport. Apart from the heat, many politicians are also leaving the city with families in the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections, sources said. Also many families are visiting the hometowns across the State in view of the summer vacation for schools and colleges, adding to the crowds at the airport and prompting the airlines to cash in on the increased demand for tickets. Hitherto, only three onward and three return flights were operated to Thoothukudi, the airport that caters to the people in the southern districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. But now four plus four flights are being operated. Similarly the demand for seats in the flights to Trichy, the city in the central part of the State that connects many towns and villages in several districts, has gone up and six flights are taking off from Chennai every day as against the four before the onset of the summer. To Coimbatore, too, the number of daily flights have been increased from 6 to 8 and for Madurai it is 7 now as against the earlier 5 and many of those passengers are leaving for destinations in the hill stations near them. Similarly, many people are also taking holidays in Bengaluru and Hyderabad in the States of Karnataka and Telangana, impelling the flight operators to raise the number of services. So Bengaluru now has 11 flights as against the earlier 8 and Hyderabad has presently 14 services one way while it used to be 10 plus 10 otherwise. Even people travelling to faraway destinations in the country and abroad has increased phenomenally with a thrice a week direct flights being introduced for Durgapur from mid-May. Similarly, even international airlines like Air France have increased their weekly flights between Paris and Chennai from 3 to 5. Indigo Airlines has also announced the introduction of a direct flight from Chennai to Bangkok, a favorite destination for tourists from all over the world, from May 15 and Air Mauritius has reintroduced its direct flight from Mauritius to Chennai after a gap of four years. Since flights to Singapore, Malaysia, London and other international tourist spots have also increased from Chennai that saw an introduction of about 40 additional or new flights, this May will see an additional 400 flights taking off from Chennai, airport sources said. The increase in number of flights had come as a boon for travelers as they were able to get seats to their favoured destinations and also did not have to cough up huge amounts as premium charges.

Gowda Family Disturbed by Abuse Allegations Against Prajwal

Gowda Family Disturbed by Abuse Allegations Against Prajwal Former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Friday said his 90-year-old father and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda and mother Chennamma were in ''pain'' following the alleged sexual abuse of several women by his nephew and MP Prajwal Revanna. The JD(S) leader lashed out at Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for accusing him and Deve Gowda of consulting lawyers regarding the legal fight to protect the Hassan MP, and said he does not have humanity. ''I want to ask the chief minister of this state whether he has any respect for parents -- I don't know from what culture you (CM) have come from. Today you have posted a statement on twitter (now X) stating that -- on one hand Gowda and Kumaraswamy say that the accused must be punished while on the other hand they have called the lawyer to Gowda's house to discuss on how to save the accused (Prajwal) and set things right legally,'' Kumaraswamy said. ''This chief minister doesn't have humanity,'' he told reporters here. ''I don't want to speak about his (CM) family to take protection... My parents are in pain. To give them confidence so that things don't affect their life, to comfort them, I was with them in their house in Bengaluru both yesterday and day before yesterday.'' He further said, ''Get video recordings from media persons stationed in front of our houses and see, Mr Siddaramaiah, as to which lawyer came to our house and how we discussed saving the accused'', Kumaraswamy said, addressing the chief minister. ''You may not have respect for parents, you may not have come from that culture. For me, my parents are important. I know about (my father's) 60 years of political life, and how my mother (Chennamma) has led her life,'' he said. The 33-year-old Prajwal Revanna is the son of H D Deve Gowda's elder son H D Revanna, who is an MLA and a former minister. Prajwal is the BJP-JD(S) alliance's candidate from Hassan, which went to the polls on April 26. Explicit video clips allegedly involving Prajwal Revanna sexually abusing several women had started making the rounds in Hassan in recent days. The state government has constituted a SIT to investigate the allegations against the MP. Kumaraswamy also flayed attempts at dragging Deve Gowda's name into the issue. ''You might not know or have forgotten how he (Deve Gowda) has led his life. We have said several times now: whoever has done wrong should face punishment. Still such statements are being made,'' he added. Siddaramaiah, the 'bete noire' of Deve Gowda, was together with the JD(S) patriarch for a long time politically as part of the Janata Dal and JD(S) before he joined the Congress. Siddaramaiah on Friday alleged that Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy were consulting lawyers. ''Kumaraswamy and Deve Gowda, who said that they don't have anything to do with (developments in) Revanna's family, have called a lawyer to their house and have held discussions. When they went for the election campaign, they said that 'I am not different, Prajwal Revanna is not different. They all do political and sinful acts together,'' the chief minister alleged.

India to host SA women for a Test, three ODIs, T20Is in June-July

BENGALURU: India will play host to South Africa women's team for one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is across June and July. The one-dayers and T20Is will be played in Bengaluru, a Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) official informed, while the Test match will be played at Chennai. The ODIs will be held at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium from June 16, while the one-off Test will start at the MA Chidambaram Stadium from June 28. The teams will then return to Bengaluru for the T20Is on July 5, 7 and 9 and they will precede the women's T20 World Cup to be played in Bangladesh in September-October. The white-ball format matches were originally a part of the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP) in late 2023, but they had to be pushed ahead because of the 50-over ICC Men's World Cup held in India last year between October and November. However, the Test match is an addition to the fixture and a part of the initiative by BCCI and Cricket South Africa (CSA) to give more impetus to women's cricket in the traditional format. It may be recalled that India had played a Test each against England and Australia at Mumbai in December last year. India had beaten England by a massive 347 runs, the largest in women's Test cricket, and Australia by eight wickets in those matches.

Molestation and abduction cases: Second notice served to MLA Revanna, says HM Parameshwara

BENGALURU: Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara on Friday said a second notice has been served to JD(S) MLA and former minister H D Revanna in connection with the cases of molestation and abduction registered against him. H D Revanna is the son of former prime minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda. Revanna's son and JD(S) Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna is also facing rape and molestation cases after a huge cache of explicit videos and photos allegedly involving him went viral. Prajwal is the BJP-JD(S) alliance candidate for the Lok Sabha polls from Hassan, which went to the polls on April 26. Speaking to reporters here, Parameshwara said earlier a notice was served under section 41 A of CrPC to which Prajwal Revanna's advocate had sought seven days' time. FIR registered against HD Revanna over abduction of woman The Special Investigation Team, which was set up to investigate the sexual abuse allegations against Prajwal Revanna, has replied that it would not be possible to give them the time sought as there is no such provision, the minister said. He added that H D Revanna who was also served the notice has sought 24 hours' time. As time cannot be given, procedurally a second notice has been issued (to MLA Revanna), because law says due opportunity has to be given. If they don't respond to the notice, action will be taken in accordance with law, the minister said. Amid reports that the victims of MP Prajwal's alleged sexual abuse are not coming forward to record their statements, Parameshwara said, We are trying to instill courage in them to come forward and give statements; the government will protect them. SIT has identified those in the video and is giving them courage. We expect more women to come and give statements. Is being part of Modi's family 'guarantee of protection' for criminals: Rahul on Prajwal's case Underlining the gravity of the matter his department is dealing with, the minister said this was not like any other case. This is a sensitive case involving the lives of women and their families, he explained. Stating that a lot of the information pertaining to the case cannot be shared in the public domain, Parameshwara said a second case has been registered. Measures were taken yesterday to ensure that the statement is recorded before the magistrate itself and the process is on and it will continue today too, the minister said. No one should say the SIT pressurised them to give a statement, so straight away statement is being recorded before the magistrate under section 164 of CrPC, Parameshwara said. To a question on SIT raiding Prajwal's house, the minister said he was not aware of it but added that a look-out notice has been issued and all international airports have been alerted, as per the procedure, with photos of Prajwal who had left the country when the allegations against him became public knowledge. A letter has also been sent to the prime minister by the chief minister asking for Prajwal's diplomatic passport to be cancelled. Everything is going as per law with speed, the minister added. Asked about allegations that one of the victims has allegedly been kidnapped by Revanna, Parameshwara said it is being inquired into to find out whether it is true or not. In case such a thing has happened, action will be taken by the SIT, he said. Everything is coming out, one after another, and everything is being examined by the SIT. Some more women have to come and give statement, he added. SIT to invoke rape charge, HD Revanna seeks anticipatory bail

New Rape and Kidnapping Cases Filed Against JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna and HD Revanna in Sex Tapes Scandal

Bangalore : JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna and his father, former Karnataka minister HD Revanna, are facing rape and kidnapping charges in connection with the sex tapes scandal. These are the latest developments in the case involving the father-son duo. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Police filed a rape case against Prajwal Revanna under Section 376 of the IPC. The charges include Section 376(2)(N) (repeatedly committing rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(ii) (demanding sexual favors), 354(B) (assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to disrobe her), 354(C) (uploading of nude or semi-nude pictures), and the IT Act. Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, has been named as the sole accused in the FIR, which was submitted to the magistrate's court by SIT officers on Thursday. Additionally, a kidnapping case has been filed against Prajwal Revanna by one Raju HD under Section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and 365 (kidnapping with the intent to secretly or wrongfully confine a person) of the IPC. According to the complaint, Raju alleged that his mother was forcibly taken away on April 29, and videos of her being sexually harassed went viral on social media. Raju claimed that he and his mother had worked at the Revanna house and farmhouse for six years before quitting three years ago. Shortly before the Lok Sabha elections began, a person identified as Satish took Raju's mother to a different region. On the day of the election, Satish brought Raju's mother back home and instructed Raju and his mother to elope if the police came to their house. On April 29, Satish forcibly took Raju's mother, claiming that HD Revanna had ordered her to be brought to him, threatening that a case would be filed against Raju and he might go to jail if the police found him. On May 1, Raju learned from his friends that his mother's sexual assault video had gone viral. Later, his relatives informed him that his mother's legs could be seen tied in the video. On May 1, Raju called Satish to inquire about his mother's whereabouts, pleading with him to send her back home. However, Raju was allegedly intimidated, with Satish claiming that an FIR had been filed against his mother over a previous altercation involving HD Revanna, where she was seen holding a stick in a photo. I dont know where my mother was taken. I fear for her life. I request you to take action under the law and find my mother, Raju wrote in the complaint. Previously, a case had been registered against Prajwal Revanna and HD Revanna for sexual harassment, intimidation, stalking, and outraging the dignity of a woman based on a complaint by a woman who worked at their house. Prajwal Revanna, who is seeking re-election from the Hassan constituency in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, has been embroiled in controversy after multiple explicit videos purportedly of him were widely shared on social media. Prajwal Revanna, however, claims that the videos were morphed and has lodged a complaint through his polling agent. The SIT formed by the Karnataka government issued a global lookout notice against Prajwal Revanna at all immigration centers worldwide on Thursday. Prajwal Revanna fled the country soon after the sexual abuse allegations surfaced and was reported to have gone to Frankfurt, Germany, on April 26. Prajwal Revanna was supposed to appear before the SIT on Thursday, but he filed a plea with a sessions court in Bengaluru seeking anticipatory bail. However, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that Prajwal Revanna did not seek political clearance for his trip to Germany. The matter has become the latest flashpoint between the BJP and the Congress, considering that JD(S) is the NDA ally in Karnataka. During a rally in the southern state, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that Prajwal Revanna mass-raped women and made sex videos. India set to host South Africa women for Test, ODIs, and T20Is in June-July

India set to host South Africa women for Test, ODIs, and T20Is in June-July India will play host to South Africa women's team for one Test, three ODIs and three T20Is across June and July.

My role is to carry on till 13th-14th over so that Klaasen gets license to bang: Nitish Reddy

HYDERABAD: Entrusted with the task of shepherding Sunrisers Hyderabad's middle-order, young Nitish Reddy has been doing the job with aplomb at a time when he is seen by many as a future India all-rounder, thanks to his ability to bowl lively medium pace. Opting to bat in the IPL game against table-toppers Rajasthan Royals here on Thursday, Reddy (76 not out) and Travis Head (58) produced explosive fifties, while Heinrich Klassen made an unbeaten 19-ball 42 to power SRH to 201 for three. Experienced seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar then did the star turn with a sensational final over as SRH pulled off a heist, stunning RR by just one run in a last-ball thriller to keep their playoff hopes alive. Nitish, 20, stated that his role was to rebuild the innings after quick wickets. From the last two matches, we are losing quick wickets and I have to go. My role is to carry on till the 13th and 14th over so that Klaasen gets a license to bang. There is no point in Klaasen and Samad coming early, but not getting to score freely, said Nitish at the post-match press conference. The all-rounder hailed Bhuvneshwar after the veteran pacer bowled a brilliant final over to help Hyderabad seal a dramatic win. Nitish said he was hopeful that Bhuvneshwar would be able to defend 13 runs in the last over. I was looking at who was going to bowl. When I saw Bhuvneshwar was going to bowl, I got the confidence that he was going to pull it off. During his prime, he had done it so many times. I did not think we were going to win, I thought either we'd lose or tie. But that last-ball wicket, I felt so happy, Nitish said. During his explosive knock, Nitish smashed RR's in-form Yuzvendra Chahal for two fours and two sixes in the 13th over. Nitish said that he backed himself to attack the seasoned leg-spinner. Reddy also said the victory against RR, following losses to Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings, is important. Beating RR will boost our confidence, they are at the top of the points table, he concluded. IPL 2024: Sunrisers Hyderabad edge Rajasthan Royals in one-run thriller Not in my best form: Parag Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag returned to the top five in the Orange Cape race after striking his fourth fifty of the season. The 22-year-old Parag slammed 77 off 49 balls but could not help his side chase down the target set by SRH. Despite his breakout season with the franchise, Parag said he was not in his best form since he could not finish the game. I got a lot of areas to improve. I am not in my best form, I would have finished the game otherwise. I got a lot of areas to perfect. I try to learn from my mistakes and not repeat them. Is it my best innings? No. I would say that if I get a hundred, Parag told reporters. The Assam player said the loss was dramatic, adding that his team made a few errors. It is never good to end on the losing side. We did a lot of things right. We will focus on them more rather than dwelling on our mistakes. We are at a good position in the points table. Just one bad game I guess. We made a few errors in two-three overs and it cost us the game. That is how T20 is, IPL is, he said.

Nitish Reddy: Aim to Set Base Before Klaasen Unleashes on Opposition

Nitish Reddy: Aim to Set Base Before Klaasen Unleashes on Opposition Entrusted with the task of shepherding Sunrisers Hyderabad's middle-order, young Nitish Reddy has been doing the job with aplomb at a time when he is seen by many as a future India all-rounder, thanks to his ability to bowl lively medium pace. ''From the last two matches, we are losing quick wickets and I have to go. My role is to carry on till the 13th and 14th over so that Klaasen gets a license to bang. There is no point in Klaasen and Samad coming early, but not getting to score freely,'' said Nitish at the post-match press conference. The all-rounder hailed Bhuvneshwar after the veteran pacer bowled a brilliant final over to help Hyderabad seal a dramatic win. Nitish said he was hopeful that Bhuvneshwar would be able to defend 13 runs in the last over. ''I was looking at who was going to bowl. When I saw Bhuvneshwar was going to bowl, I got the confidence that he was going to pull it off. ''During his prime, he had done it so many times. I did not think we were going to win, I thought either we'd lose or tie. But that last-ball wicket, I felt so happy,'' Nitish said. ''Beating RR will boost our confidence, they are at the top of the points table,'' he concluded. Not in my best form: Parag ================= Rajasthan Royals batter Riyan Parag returned to the top five in the Orange Cape race after striking his fourth fifty of the season. The 22-year-old Parag slammed 77 off 49 balls but could not help his side chase down the target set by SRH. Despite his breakout season with the franchise, Parag said he was not in his best form since he could not finish the game. ''I got a lot of areas to improve. I am not in my best form, I would have finished the game otherwise. ''I got a lot of areas to perfect. I try to learn from my mistakes and not repeat them. Is it my best innings? No. I would say that if I get a hundred,'' Parag told reporters. The Assam player said the loss was ''dramatic'', adding that his team made a few errors. ''It is never good to end on the losing side. We did a lot of things right. We will focus on them more rather than dwelling on our mistakes. We are at a good position in the points table. Just one bad game I guess. ''We made a few errors in two-three overs and it cost us the game. That is how T20 is, IPL is,'' he said.
