Photo: PTI Visakhapatnam: The police in Alluri Sitarama Raju and Parvathipuram districts are focusing on Maoist-influenced polling stations for conducting the elections in a smooth manner on May 13. Cops in the two districts have identified 651 LWE sensitive and 238 law and order problem polling stations. A police official in ASR district said that they have identified 610 Left Wing Extremist sensitive and 85 law and order sensitive stations out of the total 1021 polling stations. The district election officer has arranged two helicopters to fly the polling officials to Gruttedu under Y Ramavaram mandal of Rampachodavaram assembly constituency. Funds have been sanctioned early to install cell towers and improve roads to several polling stations in the district. We have set up check posts and are frisking suspicious persons at various locations in the district, said a police officer. Araku Lok Sabha seat (ST), which consists of LWE affected assembly segments like Paderu, Araku Valley, Rampachodavaram, Parvathipuram and Saluru, will go to polls on May 13. The official said 30 polling booths in Chintoor and Munchingput mandals have been shifted due to the Maoist threat perception. The special police launched an area-domination exercise in the bordering areas of Odisha and Chhattisgarh after a large number of Maoists were neutralized in Chhattisgarh, to ensure they do not cross over to AP via the Odisha border, he added. The outlawed Maoists recently released a pamphlet in Munchingput and other areas close to the Odisha border, appealing to the people to boycott the elections. Maoists had shot down Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and his predecessor Siveri Soma in Livitput village near Araku Valley on September 23, 2018, some 10 months before the 2019 elections. In Parvathipuram Manyam district, out of the total 981 polling stations, 41 have been identified as Maoist-sensitive and 153 law and order problem stations.

Heatwave to Persist for Two More Days in Eastern and Southern Peninsular India

Heatwave to Persist for Two More Days in Eastern and Southern Peninsular India The record-breaking heatwave spell affecting east India and parts of the southern peninsular region continued unabated on Friday, with temperatures settling above 44 degrees Celsius in at least 13 places. Intensely hot conditions prevailed in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Maximum temperatures settled in the range of 43-46 degrees Celsius in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and 40-43 degrees in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Marathwada and north interior Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh sizzled at 46.3 degrees Celsius, the highest maximum temperature in the country on Friday. The mercury settled at 44.6 degrees Celsius in Odisha's Boudh, 45 degrees in Khammam (Telangana), 46.2 degrees in Cuddapah (Andhra Pradesh), 43.4 degrees in Erode (Tamil Nadu), and 44.6 degrees in West Bengal's Kalaikunda. The IMD said the ongoing heatwave spell in east and south peninsular India will continue until May 5-6 and abate thereafter. The Met office on Wednesday said above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in May and a significantly high number of heatwave days expected over the northern plains, central region and adjoining areas of peninsular India. April witnessed record-smashing maximum temperatures in east, northeast and southern peninsular India, prompting health warnings from government agencies and some states to suspend in-person classes in schools. A number of stations recorded their highest-ever April day temperatures. Five active western disturbances led to rainfall, thunderstorms and hail storms over north and central India at regular intervals in April, preventing heat waves. IMD data shows that heat waves this April were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far. This trend is likely to continue in May, with around eight to 11 heatwave days predicted over the south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada and the Gujarat regions. The remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka and Telangana may record five to seven heatwave days during the month. Normally, the northern plains, central India and adjoining areas of peninsular India experience around three days of heat waves in May. India witnessed two spells of heat waves in April -- from April 5 to 7 and April 15 to 30. The IMD attributed the prolonged heatwave spell over east, northeast and south peninsular India in April to the absence of thunderstorms and an anticyclone at lower levels over the west central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining eastern coasts of India. This caused the sea breeze to cut off over Odisha and West Bengal on most days. The weather office said south peninsular India recorded an average maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in April, the second-highest since 1901. The mean temperature (28.12 degrees Celsius) in April in east and northeast India was the highest since 1901, it said. The IMD said above-normal maximum temperatures have become frequent over south peninsular India since the 1980s. The region recorded 12.6 mm rainfall in April -- the fifth lowest since 1901 and the second-lowest since 2001. According to IMD data, the number of heatwave days this April was the highest in 15 years in Gangetic West Bengal and nine years in Odisha. Odisha also experienced the longest heatwave spell (16 days) in April since 2016. Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. Hundreds of thousands of voters had to cope with the searing heat when they stepped out to exercise their franchise in the second phase of the elections on April 26. Polling for 94 constituencies across 12 states will take place on May 7. The weather office had earlier expected four to eight heatwave days in different parts of the country in April against a normal of one to three days. Ten to 20 heatwave days are expected against a normal of four to eight in the entire April-June period.

5000 km road trip in my Tata Altroz iTurbo: Mumbai to Kolkata and back

BHPian Mgdoodler recently shared this with other enthusiasts. Blue Rocket had plans for 2023, which 2023 decided were not to come to fruition. On charts was to travel to Khar Dung La and Kanyakumari sometime between June and Sept 2023 but due to some personal circumstances all long-distance plans were abandoned. Or so we thought. Thanks to my cousin, who was marrying the love of his life in her city in Dec 2023. Invitations were issued and the plan initially was to make a quick visit to Kolkata for a couple of days for the event itself which then turned into a week's solo drive to Kolkata and back and in the end, turned into a 15-day holiday with Blue Rocket travelling through 6 states and the rest of my family flew to Kolkata for wedding festivities. As per my usual practise Blue Rocket was serviced and a checkup done 15 days before my travel and I drove it for a couple of short excursions around Mumbai. Plan was to take the Mumbai - Nagpur - Sambhalpur - Keonjhar - Kolkata route through central India while going and return via Konark - Vishakhapatnam - Chhattisgarh - Hyderabad - Mumbai. This was my first time driving any of these routes and my first time meeting the Bay of Bengal. As with most of my long-distance drives, this was just Blue and me all the way. FYI Blue Rocket is a petrol, manual i-turbo Altroz.Day 1- 1/12/2023 FridayThis was a day I was looking forward to the most, the opportunity to drive on the Samruddhi Mahamarg. I have already driven on the Trans Haryana and enjoyed it and was looking forward to a similar experience. Left home at 6:45 am - much later than the planned 5:30 am, but I was ok with it as there was a mild fog and starting later allowed better visibility. Travelled across Mumbai via the SCLR and eastern express highway leaving the city behind at Thane, but not the traffic, roads were jammed due to diversions and the first couple of hours were tedious. First stop was to fill fuel at Padgha. Tank filled and the drive started towards Kasara ghat which I would be driving on for the first time and it was a good drive. Stopped for a quick breakfast at 10:30 at a restaurant after Ghoti Bhudruk at 150 kms from Mumbai and 7 kms before Bharvir entry into the Mahamarg. The mahamarg is wide, well planned and mostly a comfortable drive. Speed Limit for cars is 120 Kmph and it is possible to maintain the same comfortably. Heavy vehicles are few and keep to the middle and left lane. It was a pleasure to drive on this route. I stopped at approximately halfway at around 3 pm for a fuel refill and bio break. I also stopped at about 1.5hrs of driving on the mahamarg for a quick photo session with Blue being the model. As you can see the weather was lovely with blue skies and fluffy white clouds - a perfect winter day for a drive and the road is practically empty. Road surface could be better and more functional rest stops are required. Hopefully, these requirements will be fulfilled soon. It was later in the day after 4:30 pm and as we neared Nagpur, I encountered some truck traffic in the fast/overtake lane and middle lane at the same time blocking the road. But it was not for long. Crossed Waifal toll naka at 5:30 PM, having covered 600 kms in approx. 6 hours with a 20 min break. Winter and travel towards the east meant that the sun set earlier and it was already dark as we exited the Expressway and made our way to the night stay - Hotel Pride near the airport metro. Reached and checked in at 6:30 pm. Covering 814 kms in little less than 12 hours. The day had not ended though. After a quick catch-up with work, I headed towards the nearest Haldirams at Ajni Square. Travelled by metro for 4 stops and exited just outside Haldirams. My last meal had been a protein bar along with a yoghurt smoothie at 3 pm and now I feasted on Dahi Puri and hot Rajma Chawal. Dinner done I took the metro back to my hotel and turned in for an early night. Continue reading about Mgdoodler's road trip for BHPian comments, insights and more information.

MP: My Father Did Not Inherit Wealth, But Martyrdom: Priyanka Gandhi

Bhopal: AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Thursday said that her father (late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi) did not inherit wealth, but martyrdom (of his mother Indira Gandhi). Ms Gandhis statement comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Rajiv Gandhi amended the inheritance tax act to ensure that wealth of Indira Gandhi did not go to the government. Addressing a poll rally in Morena under Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh, Ms Gandhi recounted the assassination of her father and said that she had received pieces of his father when she was barely 17 years old. The Congress leader said that she was then seriously upset that her father was not given adequate security by the country which led to his assassination in a brutal manner. Ms Gandhi said that she was then angry with the country because she loved her father. She understands it now. My father did not inherit wealth, but inherited martyrdom, she said while referring to assassination of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Referring to electoral bonds, she described it the biggest scam and extortion of corrupt people by BJP. She said that the people who were raided by the Central agencies were the donors of BJP through electoral bonds, making it the richest party in the country. The raids on these donors stopped after they gave donations to BJP through electoral bonds and their cases were put in cold storage. Their names were concealed as donors in the electoral bonds. Is it not extortion? she asked. She said that one of the vaccine providers was a donor of BJP through electoral bonds. Now, things are coming out that some vaccinated people died of cardiac arrest. She also hit out at BJP for inducting leaders from other parties after levelling corruption charges against them. These leaders become clean after they join BJP, she said sarcastically. She alleged that BJP promoted those leaders who are corrupt and those who never raised peoples issues. She said that BJP never raised peoples issues such as price rise and unemployment problem and diverted attention of people from these issues by raking up non issues. Ms Gandhi said that BJP plans to make people dependent by providing them with five kg of ration and exhorted people to seek jobs from the ruling party instead. She said that Congress has named its manifesto Nyay Patra as injustice has been done to the people in the last ten years of the Narendra Modi government. Earlier in the day, she addressed an election rally in Chirmiri under Korba Lok Sabha constituency in Chhattisgarh.

Soaring temperatures scorch Eastern and Southern India: Nandyal records sweltering 46.2 degrees Celsius

Soaring temperatures scorch Eastern and Southern India: Nandyal records sweltering 46.2 degrees Celsius Intense heat swept through east India and parts of the southern peninsular region on Thursday, testing power grids and prompting the Kerala government to order closure of educational institutions till May 6. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heat wave to severe heat wave conditions scorched parts of West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. At least 17 places in these states recorded temperatures above the 44-degree Celsius mark. The mercury settled at 46.2 degrees Celsius at Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, 45.3 degrees at Palwancha in Telangana, 44.3 degrees at Karur Paramathi in Tamil Nadu, 45 degrees at Bolangir in Odisha, and 44.3 degrees at Kalaikunda in West Bengal. As Kerala continued to reel under punishing heat, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed the closure of educational institutions in the state until May 6. The IMD said the ongoing heat wave spell in east and south peninsular India will continue till May 3 and abate thereafter. The Met office on Wednesday said above normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in May and a significantly high number of heat wave days expected over the northern plains, central region, and adjoining areas of peninsular India. April saw record-smashing maximum temperatures in east, northeast, and southern peninsular India prompting health warnings from government agencies and some states to suspend in-person classes in schools. A number of stations recorded their highest ever April day temperature. Five active Western Disturbances led to rain, thunderstorm, and hail storms over north and central India at regular intervals in April, preventing heat waves. IMD data shows that heat waves in April this year were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far. This trend is likely to continue in May, with around eight to 11 heat wave days predicted over south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat regions. The remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana may record five to seven heat wave days in the month. Normally, the northern plains, central India, and adjoining areas of peninsular India experience around three days of heat waves in May. India saw two spells of heat waves in April from April 5 to 7 and April 15 to 30. The IMD attributes the prolonged heat wave spell over east, northeast, and south peninsular India in April to the absence of thunderstorms and an anticyclone at lower levels over the west central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining eastern coasts of India. This caused the sea breeze to cut off over Odisha and West Bengal on most days. The weather office said south peninsular India recorded an average maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in April, which was the second-highest since 1901. The mean temperature (28.12 degrees Celsius) in April in east and northeast India was the highest since 1901, it said. The IMD said above normal maximum temperatures have become frequent over south peninsular India since 1980s. The region recorded 12.6 mm of rainfall in April, which was the fifth lowest since 1901 and the second lowest since 2001. According to IMD data, the number of heat wave days this April was the highest in 15 years in Gangetic West Bengal and nine years in Odisha. Odisha also experienced the longest heat wave spell (16 days) in April since 2016. Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. Hundreds of thousands of voters had to cope with the searing heat when they stepped out to exercise their franchise in the second phase of the Lok Sabha elections on April 26. Polling for 94 constituencies across 12 states will take place on May 7. The weather office had earlier expected four to eight heat wave days in different parts of the country in April against a normal of one to three days. Ten to 20 heat wave days are expected against a normal of four to eight in the entire April-June period.

CRPF gains upper hand against Naxals after setting up 125 bases deep inside their dens

NEW DELHI: Attributing the recent successes in operations against left wing extremists to forward operating bases deep inside Naxal dens, officials in the security set-up said that 125 such units were established by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the past three years. Giving year wise details, a senior official said the CRPF has set up 18 forward operating bases so far in 2024, while 31 such posts were established in 2023, 48 in 2022 and 28 in 2021. These posts have given a decisive advantage to the security forces in fighting the Naxals, as more than 90 extremists were killed, over 125 arrested and 150 have surrendered so far this year in Chhattisgarh alone, the official said. As per the official data put out by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), LWE-related violence has declined by 52 percent in the country and the number of deaths by 69 percent, from 6,035 to 1,868, in the period between 2014 and 2023 as compared to the period from 2004 to 2014. After a recent detailed review of the security situation in the states affected by left wing extremism, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had directed the forces to proactively carry out operations against the Maoists. Forces make inroads in Chhattisgarh, find Naxal memorials hiding casualties The ministers direction soon translated into the formation of a high-powered committee, which had the state directors general of police (DGPs), the directors general (DG) of the CRPF, Border Security Force (BSF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Intelligence Bureau (IB) and other officers of the anti-Maoist grid as its members. Another senior official in the MHA said the results of proactive action against the Naxals are now visible on the ground, as in one of the biggest ever counter offensives against Naxals in Chhattisgarh, the forces gunned down 29 Naxalites, including some senior cadre, in Kanker district last month. According to the MHA data, the number of LWE incidents has gone down from 14,862 to 7,128 in 2014-23 as compared to 2004-14. The number of deaths of security personnel due to LWE has also declined by 72 percent, from 1,750 in 2004-14 to 485 in 2014-23, and the number of civilian deaths declined by 68 per cent, from 4,285 to 1,383. In the last five years, more than 5,000 post offices were set up in 90 districts that have Naxal presence or where the extremists were present in the past. As many as 1,298 bank branches were opened and 1,348 ATMs made operational in the 30 most-affected districts, the official said.

Amit Shah Warns Kharge Against Defending Gandhi Family Amid Poll Tensions

RAIPUR : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday cautioned Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge against telling lies on behalf of the Gandhi family. He warned that Kharge would ultimately be sacrificed by the Gandhi family if the Congress loses the elections on June 4. Amit Shah's remarks were in response to Kharge's criticisms of the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Shah defended the government's record, asking Kharge, Kharge ji says, if Modi comes to power, the poor will be destroyed. I want to ask Kharge ji, didn't 25 crore poor people benefit when they were lifted out of poverty? Didn't 80 crore poor people benefit from receiving ration? Didn't the construction of 12 crore toilets, the distribution of gas cylinders to mothers, provision of tap water, and treatment of 7 crore people through health insurance benefit the poor? Amit Shah questioned why the Congress president would lie for the Gandhi family. He warned Kharge that if the Congress loses the elections on June 4, the brother-sister duo of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi would remain unaffected, but Kharge would be blamed. Shah made these comments at a campaign rally in Katghora, Chhattisgarh. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's Lawyer Denies Sharing Controversial Amit Shah Video

DELHI : Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy's lawyer has clarified that Reddy was not involved in sharing a controversial video of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which was allegedly doctored to show Shah promising to scrap SC, ST, and OBC reservations. The lawyer, who appeared before the Delhi Police following a summons in connection with the case, stated that the video was not shared from Reddy's official account and requested the police to withdraw the notice issued to Reddy. Reddy accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of retaliating against him for questioning the BJP's stance on reservations, claiming the two leaders adopted a vengeful attitude and lodged a case against him. The police are also investigating other opposition leaders for allegedly sharing the same video, with several of them receiving notices. The Delhi Police is reportedly close to identifying the creator of the video, which the BJP claims was an edited version of an old clip of Amit Shah discussing the removal of a four percent unconstitutional reservation for Muslims in Telangana. Social media platform X withheld the Jharkhand Congress's account, which shared the video, as police work to identify those who uploaded and shared the footage. East, South continue to reel under heatwave; max temperature in Telangana to hit 45C, says IMD

East, South continue to reel under heatwave; max temperature in Telangana to hit 45C, says IMD As vast swathes of east and south India continued to bake under the scorching sun on Thursday, with the mercury in two Telangana districts hitting the 44C mark; a top scientist with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) held out no hope of an immediate respite for the state, adding that the maximum temperature can reach up to 45C over the next few days. Speaking to ANI on Thursday, IMD scientist Dr A. Sravani said, The maximum temperatures in Telangana have been on an upward curve over the last few days, It has now shot up to 44C. Some of the state observatories have even recorded maximum temperatures in the region of 45C or more in certain areas. The eastern part of the state has recorded temperatures in excess of 43C, while two districts have seen the mercury breach the 44C-mark. The Nizamabad district saw the mercury hit 44.1C while Ramagundam in the Peddapalli district recorded 44.4C, the climate scientist added. The prevailing condition will continue over the next four days. We will issue an orange alert (heatwave warning) tomorrow. After May 5, the maximum temperature in the state could show a marginal decrease with showers, too, predicted, Sravani added. According to a post on the official X handle of the IMD, Rentachintala in Andhra Pradesh recorded the highest maximum temperature on Thursday, at 46.2C, followed by Tirupathi and Rayalaseema at 45.6C; Khammam and Telangana at 45C; Talcher in Odisha at 45C; Purulia and Gangetic West Bengal at 44.1C; Karur Paramathi in Tamil Nadu at 44C); Malda and sub-Himalayan West Bengal at 41.8C; and Forbesganj in Bihar at 41.4C. Further, according to the IMD, the heatwave will persist in most areas of the eastern and southern states in May, including Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka. While the political temperature south of the Vindhyas has peaked amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, in several cities of Telangana, not just the people but political leaders, as well, have had to bow to the unforgiving sun. Amid the intense heatwave, leaders across political parties have been wary not to take carry out campaign-related activities during the day and have been going door-to-door and taking out rallies and roadshows before 10 am or after 5 pm. The district administration has also been running awareness campaigns among voters in the morning or evening. From party offices, shops to religious places, all establishments stay closed in the afternoon hours, with priests, aides and devotees at temples, as well as party workers choosing to stay indoors. Dr Priyanka Ala, the district magistrate of Bhadradri Kothagudem, said, Already, the temperatures in districts are in excess of 45C and we are expecting it to inch further upward to 46 or 47C on May 13, the polling day. Considering the unforgiving weather, we have decided to make special arrangements at the polling stations. One of them is AMF, which stands for Assured Minimum Facilities. We also provide adequate drinking water facilities along with toilets. We have also made special seating arrangements under the shade. Each polling station will have a minimum of two to four tents. Medical kits, including ORS, will also be arranged. Ahead of polling on May 13, the political parties as well as the district administration are making elaborate arrangements to bring the maximum number of votes to the polling stations. The parties have not only arranged auto-rickshaws to ferry voters to their designated polling booths but also cold beverages, drinking water, and tents to enable them to get their fingers inked on May 13. Special arrangements have also been made at hospitals to attend to voters should they complain of discomfort or distress on account of the prevailing heatwave on polling day. (ANI)

(AFP PHOTO / Noah SEELAM) Manjhi was the eighth BJP leader to have been killed by Maoists in the state in the past one year. (AFP PHOTO / Noah SEELAM) Raipur: Tuesdays encounter in a forest in Abujhmad in south Bastar in Chhattisgarh has led to elimination of five top leaders of Maad division of Maoists while shattering the myth that the area, considered safe sanctuary of ultras, is beyond reach of security personnel, police said on Wednesday. Ten Maoists including three women cadres were killed in an encounter with security forces in a forest near Kakur village under Abujhmad (loosely translated in English as incomprehensible) along the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts in Bastar in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. Some senior Naxal leaders from Maharashtra, Telangana and Bastar were among the ten Maoists slain in the April 30 encounter near Kakur, Bastar range inspector general of police P Sunderraj said. Prominent among the Maoist leaders killed in the encounter included Jaganna alias Ghissu alias Cheemala Narsaiah (66), a resident of Jayyaram under Ramagundam police station in Karimnagar district in Telangana. Another slain Maoist leader has been identified as Sangita Donge Atram who was in the rank of commander of an area committee. She carried a reward of Rs five lakh on her head. The counterinsurgency operation in the forest near Kakur village on Tuesday was very significant as it has shattered the long-held myth of Maad being an impregnable sanctuary for Maoists, the police officer said. Meanwhile, a jawan of DRG identified as Mangal Mandvi was injured in the bear attack during the encounter. This was the first of its kind incident in Bastar. Modi government didnt use majority to scrap quota in 10 yrs: Shah

RAIPUR: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has refuted allegations levelled by the Congress that the BJP would abolish reservations after gaining a majority in the forthcoming elections. Addressing a poll rally at Katghora in the Korba Lok Sabha constituency on Wednesday, he stated, After remaining in power for 10 years, we didnt remove reservations nor will we allow anyone to do so in the future. Modiji used the majority to scrap Article 370 (in Kashmir), construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, triple talaq, and introducing Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Eulogizing the achievements of the BJP-led Centre, he said PM Narendra Modi has a 10-year track record and a 25-year agenda for Viksit Bharat, while seeking the peoples support for his straight third term. Shah claimed that in the second term, the Modi government has eliminated Naxalism from the country but couldnt do so in Chhattisgarh owing to the hindrance of the Congress-led Bhupesh Baghel government. He held the Congress accountable for nurturing terrorism and Maoism in the country for years to win polls. Despite Maoists accepting they suffered a huge loss, the Congress called the encounters fake. After the BJP came to power in the state, 95 Maoists have been neutralized, and 350 cadres surrendered in four months, he added. Reiterating the commitment to get rid of Maoists, Shah assured that the third term for PM will wipe out the banned outfit from Chhattisgarh in the next two years. Shah professed that PM Modi has already scored a century in the first two phases of polling as the BJP surges ahead towards a stage of 400 seats. Citing Korba as a tough seat, he asked the people to support the BJP candidate Saroj Pandey, whom he cited as an accomplished parliamentarian.

Congress has not fielded Muslim candidates in 12 states: AIMIM chief

HYDERABAD : AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday said that the Congress has not fielded even a single candidate from the Muslim community in more than a dozen states. Addressing a public meeting at Dabeerpura, the Hyderabad MP said: In Parliament, the participating form of democracy was formulated in which people across every religion and caste were supposed to take part. According to the 2011 Census, there are 17 crore Muslims (around 14 per cent), but the Muslim MPs are only 4.5 per cent. In Maharashtra, there are 38 Lok Sabha seats and around 1.10 crore Muslims (around 12-13 per cent), but neither Congress, Sharad Pawar (NCP-Sharadchandra Pawar), nor Uddhav Thackeray (UBT) gave tickets to a Muslim person. The Congress has also not given tickets to Muslims in Chhattisgarh, Meghalaya, Tripura, Sikkim, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Punjab. On one side, Muslim people are not given tickets, and on the other side, the BJPs manifesto does not even mention Muslims. So who will fight for you people? That is why I am saying these elections are very important for us, he said.

Decoding former Telangana CMs coalition at Centre remarks

HYDERABAD : Former chief minister and BRS president K Chandrasekhar Raos assertion that his party will win 12 Lok Sabha seats and play a key role in a coalition government formation at the Centre has left leaders of other parties wondering how its possible given the political matrix. He even went on to say that his party Khammam candidate Nama Nageswara Rao would become a Union minister. Though KCR is known for making sensational statements, his current prediction defies logic as most of the regional parties are in alliance with either the INDIA bloc or the NDA and the BRS doesnt belong to either of them. Among the few parties that are maintaining a distance from both the blocs are the YSRCP, BJD, BSP, AIADMK and Akali Dal. Major regional parties such as the TMC, DMK and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) are with the INDIA Bloc. In this situation, KCR stands no chance, even remotely, of playing a key role in the formation of a coalition government at the Centre. His grandiose plans to expand the BRS to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, etc., petered out after his party lost in the Assembly elections. The BRS is also facing a tough challenge in Telangana to retain its Lok Sabha seats as the Congress and BJP pose a serious challenge. With six of the BRSs sitting MPs shifting loyalties to the Congress and BJP, the party has fielded a number of new faces in the upcoming elections. CM A Revanth Reddy has called KCRs statement a big joke and alleged that the latter was indicating a pact with the BJP. Revanth has unequivocally said that KCR would not be allowed to be part of the INDIA bloc. Senior political leaders are of the view that KCRs statement may be a ploy to grab peoples attention and win as many LS seats as possible.

BJP Will Never Remove Reservation Asserts Amit Shah In Chhattisgarh

Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday reiterated that BJP would neither remove reservation for SC, ST and OBC nor would it allow Congress to do so. Addressing an election rally at Katghora under Korba Lok Sabha constituency in Chhattisgarh, Mr Shah said that Congress believed in only one mantra- speak a lie loudly and repeat it again and again. They (Congress) say if (PM Narendra) Modi ji gets a third term as PM, he will remove reservation. They circulated my fake video. We have been in power for ten years. Modi ji did not scrap reservation nor will he do it, he said. In an indirect dig at AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge for saying that BJP would do away with reservation system, if voted to power in the general elections, Mr Shah said that I have a piece advice for Mr Kharge that he should not speak lies for a family as eventually he will be blamed for the loss of Congress in the Lok Sabha elections. He added that Kharge ji, you dont know they (Nehru-Gandhi family) do not belong to anyone... As the Congress will suffer defeat on June four, the brother-sister duo will remain safe, but 80-year-old Kharge ji will be blamed. Mr Shah said that the Prime Minister used the majority to scrap Article 370 and triple talaq, and for construction of Ram temple and introduction of Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Mr Modi eliminated terrorism and Naxalism. Neither shall we remove reservation nor allow Congress to do so. It is a guarantee of Modi ji, he asserted. Mr Shah said that in his third term as PM, Mr Modi would root out Naxalism in Chhattisgarh. He said that the previous Bhupesh Baghel government had encouraged Naxalism in Chhattisgarh and thats why although Maoism was eliminated elsewhere in the country by the PM, it remained in Chhattisgarh. He said that 95 Maoists were killed in Chhattisgarh after the BJP came to power in the state four months ago. Congress has been nurturing terrorism and Naxalism in the country for years to win the elections, he said. Mr Shah accused the Congress of spurning the invitation for the consecration ceremony of Ram temple in Ayodhya on January 22 for fear of losing its vote bank. Mr Shah claimed that BJP has already scored a century (of seats) in the first two phases of Lok Sabha polls in the country. The Union minister said that he was confident that BJP would cross 400 mark in the general elections.

Modi Rejects Congress's Demand for Religion-Based Reservations; Demands Clarity on 50% Quota Cap Proposal

Modi Rejects Congress's Demand for Religion-Based Reservations; Demands Clarity on 50% Quota Cap Proposal Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday challenged the Congress to give a guarantee in writing that it will never give quota based on religion and asserted that as long as he is alive he will not allow anyone to ''play the game of reservation''. As the quota row escalated with five more phases left in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress on its part asked Modi to clear his stance on whether he will remove the 50 per cent cap on reservation for Scheduled Castes(SC), Scheduled Tribes(ST) and Other Backward Class(OBC). The seven-phase elections concludes on June one. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also said the BJP will never do away with reservations for SC/ST/OBC categories nor will it allow the Congress to do so. In his first public address in Gujarat as part of the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in his home state, Prime Minister Modi said that as long as the BJP and he remain, the reservation granted to SC/ST/OBC and economically weaker sections will be safeguarded and not harmed. ''I challenge the shahzada(a reference to Rahul Gandhi) of Congress, as well as Congress party and its supporters to announce that they will never misuse reservation in the name of religion, nor will they play with the Constitution or give reservation in the name of religion. ''Let the Congress and INDI alliance give a guarantee in writing -- because they cannot be trusted -- that they will never give reservation in the name of religion. They should also give a second guarantee that they will never touch reservation given to SC, ST, OBC and general category. They will never do so, will never give it in writing,'' Modi said. I challenge Congress and its ecosystem to declare they would not give reservation to minorities by altering Constitution.'' He said in 2024, the Congress and the INDIA bloc have come out with a lie, and are flashing the Constitution to spread fear that it will be changed and reservation given to the SC, ST, OBC and EWS will be taken away if the NDA comes to power. ''A completely fabricated gossip,'' Modi said, as he accused the Congress of spreading a false narrative. ''Congress and its people should listen carefully that this is Modi. As long as Modi is alive, I will never let you play the game of reservation in the name of the Constitution.'' Modi said the SC, ST, OBC and the poor from the general category have got reservation under Constitution, with the blessings of Babasaheb Ambedkar, and nobody can take away even a part of it. ''Your (Congress) intention is to give reservation to the Muslims in the name of religion. ''I can say this with confidence -- and I say this on record in front of the world -- that as long as the BJP and Modi remain, the reservation given by Babasaheb Ambedkar's Constitution to the SC, ST, OBC and common man (EWS) will be safeguarded and will not be harmed,'' he said. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the Congress manifesto guarantees that it will pass a constitutional amendment to raise the 50 per cent cap on reservation for SC, ST and OBC but alleged that Modi is trying to give it a ''communal colour''. Addressing a press conference at the AICC headquarters in Delhi, the former union minister alleged that the BJP is ''talking about '400 paar' to get the right to change the Constitution as the BJP and the RSS are against secularism and social justice''. ''The Congress guarantees that it will pass a constitutional amendment to raise the 50 per cent cap on reservations for SC, ST and OBC. Heat Waves to Scorch Northern Plains and Central India in May: IMD Forecast

Heat Waves to Scorch Northern Plains and Central India in May: IMD Forecast Above normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in May and a significantly high number of heat wave days expected over the northern plains, central region, and adjoining areas of peninsular India, said IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Wednesday. A prolonged and intense spell of heat wave scorched swathes of east, northeast, and southern peninsular India in April, prompting health warnings from government agencies and some states to suspend in-person classes in schools. Five active Western Disturbances led to rain, thunderstorm, and hailstorms over north and central India at regular intervals in April, preventing heat waves, the India Meteorological Department's director general told a press conference. IMD data shows that the heat waves in April this year were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far. This trend is likely to continue in May, with around eight to 11 heat wave days predicted over south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and Gujarat regions, Mohapatra said. The remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka, and Telangana may record five-seven heat wave days in the month, he said. Normally, the northern plains, central India, and adjoining areas of peninsular India experience around three days of heat waves in May. Above normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in May, except for most parts of northeast India, some parts of northwest and central India, and adjoining areas of northeast peninsular India where normal to below-normal maximum temperatures are likely, the IMD said. Above normal minimum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country except the northeast and some areas of northwest India, Indo-Gangetic plains, and the central region. Normal rainfall (91-109 per cent of the long-period average) is predicted in the country in May. Normal to above normal rainfall is likely over most parts of northwest India, and some parts of central, peninsular and northeast India. Below normal precipitation is likely in the remaining parts of the country, the IMD said. India saw two spells of heat waves in April from April 5 to 7 and April 15 to 30. Mohapatra attributed the prolonged heat wave spell over east, northeast, and south peninsular India in April to the absence of thunderstorms and a persisting anticyclone at lower levels over the west central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining eastern coasts of India. This caused the sea breeze to cut off over Odisha and West Bengal on most days, he said. The IMD said south peninsular India recorded an average maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in April, which was the second-highest since 1901. The mean temperature (28.12 degrees Celsius) in April in east and northeast India was the highest since 1901, the weather office said. The IMD chief said above normal maximum temperatures have become frequent over south peninsular India since 1980s. The region recorded 12.6 mm of rainfall in April, which was the fifth lowest since 1901 and the second lowest since 2001. Mohapatra said the number of heat wave days this April was the highest in 15 years in Gangetic West Bengal and nine years in Odisha. Following a decrease in turnout in the first phase of polling, the Election Commission (EC) set up a task force to review the impact of the heat wave. The task force includes officials of the poll panel, the IMD, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry. Given the Central government's contemplation of the 'one nation, one-poll' concept, the IMD chief had earlier told PTI that authorities must consider weather conditions and the climate in their planning. 'One nation, one poll' refers to the idea of holding simultaneous polls in the country to elect Lok Sabha and state assembly representatives.

Kharge's 'Ram vs Shiva' Remark Stirs Political Controversy in Chhattisgarh

RAIPUR : A political controversy has erupted in Chhattisgarh after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge made a remark during a campaign rally comparing a Congress candidate's name, Shivakumar Dahariya, to Lord Shiva, stating he could compete with Lord Ram due to his name. Kharge also warned the BJP against using religious rhetoric to influence voters, emphasizing the need for people to avoid being misled by religious discussions. - , Ram vs Shiva ? Party national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the Congress for what he perceived as divisive and anti-Hindu rhetoric, accusing the party of trying to pit deities against each other and divide Hindus for political gain. Poonawalla also claimed that the Congress aims to unite its Muslim vote bank by dividing Hindus. The incident has intensified the political tension between the Congress and the BJP, with accusations of promoting religious divisions while trying to sway voters. Poonawalla argued that Congress's approach was rooted in a broader agenda of opposing Prime Minister Modi rather than genuinely serving the interests of the people. ED Detains Former Markfed MD in Rs 140 Crore Custom Milling Scam Case

Raipur: In Chhattisgarh, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has detained the former Managing Director (MD) of Markfed in the custom milling scam case. Manoj Soni, accused in the Rs 140 crore scam case, was arrested by the ED team and brought to their office for questioning. Soni was earlier summoned to the Economic Offenses Wing (EOW) office for interrogation in connection with the custom milling scam case. After questioning, the ED team took him into custody and transferred him to the sub-zonal office. According to the ED, the scam involves an illegal recovery of Rs 140 crore, with several officials, from officers to members of the Millers Association, allegedly involved. It is believed that crucial information related to the custom milling case may emerge during Manoj Soni's interrogation, potentially aiding ED in reaching more associates involved in the matter. Initial investigations by the ED suggest that Manoj Soni and his associates had been running this operation for the past two years. The scam involved a team comprising Markfed officers and officials from the Chhattisgarh State Rice Millers Association. Allegedly, the funds were embezzled under the pretext of custom milling, thinning, and thickening of paddy, and converting it into FCI rice. With the arrest of Manoj Soni, the former MD of Markfed, ED is expected to intensify its investigation into the case. The agency has found that the custom milling scam was operated with the collusion of officials, with Manoj Soni allegedly orchestrating the entire operation. Investigations have revealed how officials were instructed by Soni regarding the payment of rice millers' bills and the timing of recovery from them. The Rice Millers Association of the concerned district played a significant role in facilitating this scam. ED estimates that the scam amounts to Rs 140 crore, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. ED Arrests Former MARKFED MD in Chhattisgarh Rice Milling Corruption Case

ED Arrests Former MARKFED MD in Chhattisgarh Rice Milling Corruption Case Chhattisgarh MARKFED managing director Manoj Soni in a money laundering case linked to an alleged rice milling scam worth Rs 175 crore, official sources said. Soni was taken into custody and produced before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Raipur where the agency will seek his custody for interrogation. The federal agency had last year said in a statement that Rs 175 crore bribes were generated through this alleged scam for the ''benefit of higher powers''. It last raided Soni, some officers bearers of the state rice millers association, including treasurer Roshan Chandrakar, district marketing officers (DMOs) and a few rice millers in October last year as part of a custom rice milling special incentive 'scam' in the central Indian state. The agency has earlier said in a statement that its case stems from a complaint filed by the Income Tax department before a court Raipur where the tax department had alleged that the office bearers of the Chhattisgarh rice millers association ''colluded'' with officers of the state marketing federation Ltd (MARKFED) and ''hatched a conspiracy to misuse the special incentive where Rs 40 per quintal of paddy was paid by the state government to rice millers for custom milling of rice''. The state is known as the rice bowl of the country due to its high volume of paddy production. The ED said this amount of Rs 40 was ''exorbitantly'' increased to Rs 120 per quintal of paddy and this was paid in two instalments of Rs 60 each. ''The office bearers of Chhattisgarh state rice millers association under the leadership of its Treasurer Roshan Chandrakar, in connivance with Manoj Soni MD of MARKFED, started collecting kickbacks amount of Rs 20 per installment for each quintal of paddy milled from the rice millers.'' ''The details of rice millers who have paid the cash amounts were sent by the district rice millers association to the concerned DMO,'' the ED found. The DMOs, upon receiving the bills of rice millers, cross-checked them with the details received from the concerned district rice millers association and this information was then passed on to the head office of MARKFED, it said. The bills of ''only those rice millers who have paid cash amount'' to the association were cleared by the MD, MARKFED for payment, it alleged. Probe found, the ED said, the increase in the special allowance from Rs 40 to Rs 120 per quintal, payments of Rs 500 crore were released, generating ''kickbacks'' of Rs 175 crore which were collected by Roshan Chandrakar with active assistance of MD MARKFED (Soni), for the benefit of 'higher powers'. The agency said it seized ''incriminating'' documents, digital devices and ''unaccounted cash'' of Rs 1.06 crore during the raids. The ED, over the last few months, has claimed to have unearthed a coal levy, a liquor duty and an illegal online betting app (Mahadev app) ''scam'' in the state which is currently being ruled by the BJP after it defeated the Congress party led by chief minister Bhupesh Baghel in the assembly polls held last year. In all these cases, the ED has claimed, kickbacks worth crores were generated through a nexus of local politicians and bureaucrats. It has arrested a number of IAS officers, a police official and some others in these above mentioned cases till now.

BJP stands with Matri Shakti: Shah slams Karnataka govt for inaction in Prajwal Revanna case

GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the BJP stands with the Matri Shakti and slammed the Congress government in Karnataka for not acting on the complaints of alleged sexual misconduct against Janata Dal (Secular) leader Prajwal Revanna. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Shah said the Karnataka government is answerable for the inaction in the case. The BJPs stand is clear. We stand with Matri Shakti and Nari Shakti. Narendra Modiji has a commitment to the country that any incident of insult to Nari Shakti anywhere will not be tolerated, the home minister said. The Congress is trying to put the blame on us. But I want to ask whose government is it in Karnataka? Its the Congress party government. The fake video must have come to your notice because it was released on time. Why has the Congress not taken actions so far? We dont have to take actions as law and order is a state subject, Shah said. Priyankaji is asking us questions. I want to tell her that instead of questioning me and Modiji, she should ask her Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister what their government is doing. Why is there no probe? We favour a probe, he said. He also said that the JD(S) has a core committee meeting on Tuesday and it would possibly take steps on the matter. He said such incidents have no place anywhere and stringent measures should be taken. This is the BJPs stand and there should not be any confusion about it, he categorically said. Prajwal Revanna suspended from JDS over sex scandal row The home minister said the BJP, which has been running the government at the Centre with full majority for 10 years, did not use the mandate to choke democracy like the Congress did by imposing emergency. We used the mandate to abolish Article 370 and triple talaq, bring laws based on Indian culture by replacing British laws and fight Covid, he said, adding the BJP paved the way for the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya following a judgement by the court. Stating that the Congress wants to create confusion, he said he would like to make it clear that the BJP supports reservation for SC, ST and OBC categories of people. He said if there is any party that has done politics on the issue, it is the Congress. In undivided Andhra Pradesh, the Congress gave quota to the Muslims. Because of this, the (scope of) OBC reservation dropped. Then in Karnataka, they brought all Muslims under OBC overnight and gave 4% quota to them. This affected the other backward communities, the home minister said. Stating that the BJP views religion-based quota as unconstitutional, he said the party would abolish such reservation when it grabs power in these states and give justice to people belonging to SC, ST and OBC categories. During the presser, Shahs original and fake videos on reservation were played on a screen. The home minister said the fake video was the result of the Congress frustration. Their frustration has reached such a level that they made fake videos of me and some other BJP leaders and circulated them. Luckily, what I said was recorded and today, a prominent Congress leader is facing criminal offence. From the time Rahul Gandhi took command of the Congress, they are taking politics to the lowest level, Shah said. Meanwhile, he said according to an internal assessment of the BJP after the two phases of polls in 190 seats, the NDA is far ahead of 100 seats. We are heading towards 400 paar. We see a great electoral success in Assam, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand. The BJP is also getting a good response in the south Indian states. This is why, we will surely cross the 400-seat mark, he said.
