KKR Win an Away Tie Against MI After 12 years, All But Put Hosts Out of IPL

Mumbai : Kolkata Knight Riders bowling unit performed in unison to win a battle of attrition against five-time champions Mumbai Indians by 24 runs in an IPL match here on Friday. If KKR batters were guilty of not working out their game plan on the go in the first half to be bowled out for just 169 with Venkatesh Iyer contributing 70, Mumbai Indians' underperforming batters stood no chance on a tricky wicket which demanded both application and patience. They were all-out for 145 in 18.5 overs and are practically out of the competition which has been a nightmare for Hardik Pandya. It was KKR's first away win in Mumbai after12 years and last time they won here, their principal owner Shah Rukh Khan was embroiled in an argument with security staff which led to his ban from the venue for next three years. That year KKR won the trophy and this win took them to 14 points and kept them in contention for a finish among the first two teams. Despite Suryakumar Yadav's brilliant fifty, Mumbai Indians were shot out for 145 in 18.5 overs chasing 170, found wanting with the bat once again as Mitchell Starc (3.5-0-33-4) cleaned up the tail for KKR's seventh win in 10 matches. Until he top edged one off a full toss from Andre Russell (2/30), Suryakumar appeared to be proving the difference between the two sides with a top quality knock which brought MI back from the brink. With six fours and two sixes, Suryakumar made 56 off 35 balls in an innings that kept MI's hopes alive. Suryakumar also brought the equation down enough for his side to get over the line after they were reduced to 71/6 at one stage. But none of the MI batters showed their hand up as KKR ran away with the game with a flurry of wickets towards the end. Also impressive were KKR's spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, producing identical figures of 4-0-22-2 to keep the MI batters under the pump. Having smacked a six and a four off Starc, Ishan Kishan (13) missed connecting a wild heave which resulted in the Aussie knocking down his leg stump. Naman Dhir (11) hit two fours to start with but he also went for a heave and missed with Chakravarthy striking on his first delivery. Playing as an impact sub, Rohit Sharma (11) lofted Starc for a spectacular six over extra cover but failed to connect well when he went to pull a short one from Narine. Manish Pandey covered a fair distance moving backwards to reduce MI to 46 for three in the powerplay. Chakravarthy ensured a short stay in the middle for MI's most successful batter this year when he had Tilak Varma (4) caught by Narine at short third man. The flow of wickets pushed MI on the backfoot and the pressure resulted in further success when Nehal Wadhera (6) chopped one onto his wickets off Narine. MI skipper and India vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup Hardik Pandya walked out to loud boos once again at home turf Wankhede Stadium only to be outdone by the awkward pace off the surface. Pandya's innings lasted only two balls as he too, like a few others, was early into his shot which produced a top edge to be grabbed easily. Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders' aggressive approach came a cropper on a sluggish surface as they were bowled out for a paltry 169 despite Venkatesh Iyer's half-century. Venkatesh scored 70 off 52 balls but his selfish attitude of trying to preserve his own wicket by sacrificing enforcer Russell certainly cost the Shah Rukh Khan co-owned side 20 runs which didn't turn out to be costly in the end. Veteran Pandey scored 42 off 31 balls in a stand of 83 for the sixth wicket with Venkatesh. Just like the top-order was blown away before the total reached 60, the last five fell for just 29 runs as Jasprit Bumrah (3/18 in 3.5 overs) was too hot to handle with his toe-crushers at the death. On a two-paced wicket which had the odd delivery coming on to the bat slower than expected, KKR batters were guilty of rushing into their shots and and not reading the track well before formulating their plans. As a result, half of their side was back in the hut in the powerplay without having anything significant on the board. After the explosive top order cut a sorry figure, Rinku Singh (9) too squandered an opportunity to bat big, forcing KKR to turn to the experienced Pandey as impact sub for rescue.

MI vs KKR, IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders beat Mumbai Indians after 12 years at Wankhede

In a dramatic game where the pendulum swung from one end to the other, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) sealed a 24-run victory over the Mumbai Indians (MI). How to get bejewelled balloters to the booth

South Bengaluru, south Chennai, south Delhi, south Mumbai, south Kolkata. There is something special about the southern parts of Indian metros that makes the affluent stay there. Quite the contrast from the laggard Global South. The problem with what we might call Indias Urban South is that they dont like lifestyle disruptions like voting at elections. We have seen that this year in the constituencies of Chennai South and Bengaluru South, both of which saw less than 55 percent voters showing up. I am tempted to bet their Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai counterparts may try to match them in low turnouts. Not even the talk of a never-proposed but much-disposed inheritance tax may shake them from their electoral slumber, unless you think out of the ballot box. About 15 years ago, a friend listed in jest 10 reasons why Mumbai Souths elite voters didnt show up to vote in 2009. Two reasons stood out: no valet parking, and they didnt want to stand in the same queue as their household help. Youve got to say bye-bye to voting if you spot your bai out there. In the best tradition of Indian-style innovation, I am thinking of ways to end such apathy. While at that, I am also intrigued by the tendency of Indians in general and the affluent in particular to splurge or lose money through various endeavours while hating the thing called tax. Its not a condition peculiar only to India. The Beatles sang in their 1966 song, Taxman : Now my advice for those who die (taxman) / Declare the pennies on your eyes (taxman) / Cause Im the taxman / Yeah, Im the taxman / And youre working for no one but me (taxman). Even before the Fab Four, Bollywoods Kishore Kumar sang in 1954: Kuchh income tax le jaata hai / Kuchh beewi udaati hai (Some money is taken away by income tax / and some blown up by the wife). Later, in 1970, when tax raids happened on film stars, he sang: Nagad naayan ke sab yaar / In sabke pichhe pad gaya income tax / Are bam-bam naache Kishore Kumaram (Everybody is a friend of the god of bucks / The income tax is after their backs / and Kishore Kumar dances bam-bam). But then, tax and voting are different things for celebrities. These days movie stars vote in style. Queues are bent for them so they can do the celeb act: posing for cameras in designer shades with ink on their forefingers. For all we know, they might be imagining showing a middle finger to politicians, but what we see is what we think we get. But stars and tycoons need to be treated with deference to make them part with cash. The poor can be made to part with cash through offerings made to astrologers and priests in exchange for the fulfilment of their wishes. The middle class can be had with get-rich-quick schemes in everything from unreliable chit-fund schemes to dud shares, and if they are techno-hip, through cyber frauds and crypto scams. The truly rich wont fall for all this. Some of them got rich in the first place by partly or wholly trying some of the tricks mentioned above (occasionally described in boardrooms as strategy). We need to reverse-swing this whole business with some designer jugaad . We need to take a leaf out of their books and charm them into doing unto the taxman what some of them do unto their clients and, sometimes, shareholders or bankers. What I suggest to counter electoral apathy in the Urban South is a Premium Voting Lounge, much like those fancy corners in airports or plush hotels. You have to pay so that you dont have to stand in queues, certainly not with your helps. You have sofas in air-conditioned waiting areas. The electronic voting machines flash a welcome message after a welcome drink. And yes, you can pose for a selfie with your EVM and pay a service charge (GST extra). Valet parking, of course, is included. There you have it. Farmhouse parties in Delhi and bashes in Malabar Hill will never be the same again. Page 3 smiles and Instagram videos will complete the picture. Bejewelled balloters will happily part with a lakh or two if they are told that voting is not an act of duty but a style statement. I can imagine Ms Chopra in South Delhi doing a pre-election photoshoot as well. If she is complimented later about having lost weight, she might even reply: You see, I have been exercising my franchise. Diamond and platinum brands are well advised to sell this idea to the powers that be. Fingers are meant to hold expensive rocks, not just press an EVM button. An election symbol can now be transformed into a status symbol. If the Unique Identification Authority cooperates, designer Aadhaar cards with filter-fixed photos wont be a bad idea either, though immigration officials may object. The wealthy are not fools who part easily with their money. They would rather pay for a holiday home they will never stay in, or do a 50-50 deal with a suitable deity than pay inheritance tax. The government is well advised to hire consultants of the premium variety to do something about this. Smart consultants dont come cheap. Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) S. Chockalingam on Friday informed that the state machinery has also seized 46.76 lakh litres of liquor. Beside this, 1,595 illegal weapons have been seized and they have also canceled the licenses of 1,110 arms and seized them. Preventive actions have been taken against 1,11,878 individuals across the state. ORS packets are also being provided at the polling stations along with drinking water facility for the third phase of elections, Mr. Chockalingam said. There are 114 critical polling stations in 11 Lok Sabha constituencies of the third phase of the election, which is scheduled to go to polls on May 7. CRPF companies are being deployed at critical polling stations. In a response to a query in connection with the delay in releasing the final voter turnout data for the two phases of Lok Sabha elections, the Maharashtra CEO said that they gave tentative data of voting percentage on the night of polling day. The actual voting figures are available only on the second day. There could be a difference from one percent to five per cent between the tentative percentage and actual voting percentage. We give complete information about voting to polling agents of candidates. This information is collected in front of everyone. Technically, it cant be interfered with, Mr. Chockalingam said. He also said that the ECI has set a target of 75 per cent voting. In the first phase, voting percentage was almost equal compared to 2019, while in the second phase, voting percentage increased by 0.21 per cent.

IPL 2024: Bumrah sparks in fading Mumbai as KKR win at Wankhede after 12 years

CHENNAI: On Thursday, both T Natarajan and Sandeep Sharma, the two best Indian pacers not named Jasprit Bumrah in this year's edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), showcased their wares to perfection. On Friday, it was Bumrah's turn to show exactly why he's the undisputed figurehead. Coming into the game against the Kolkata Knight Riders, it was safe to suggest that the Mumbai Indians weren't themselves. Speculation had been rife that a leadership change had led to a divided house. Batters punching below their weight, spinners being ineffective and overseas bowlers not pulling their weight... You get the drift; it has not been a good campaign. But that principle doesn't apply to Bumrah, whose artistry shined once again. Under a floodlit Wankhede, he was divine. It was rather poetic that he started his innings the way he finished yorker targeting the stumps. When you watch a yorker in real-time, it can look deceptively simple. In reality, it's an extremely hard skill to master because of the margins at play. In his column for the International Cricket Council's (ICC) website in 2017, Shane Bond had written: One of the things I keep getting asked is whether bowling the yorker is becoming a dying art. I don't think so it is just that the yorker is being used differently, and bowlers are also experimenting with a range of slower balls. The yorker is not just one of the most difficult balls to bowl, the margin for error is also extremely small. Therefore, it becomes vital to use that weapon judiciously, the Kiwi speedster wrote. The margin is about 30 centimetres from approximately 22 yards out during your delivery stride after running in. Misalign it by a few centimetres on either side of that 30-cm mark and you will travel. Not if you are Bumrah, though. The control he has on the yorker is unusual for it's almost always on the money. The few times he fails to hit the mark, it's usually a low full toss, another difficult ball to get away. Over the last few matches Sunil Narine has played, bowlers have tried to home in full onto his pads. Some have overpitched it, others have conceded wides. Not the 30-year-old. His first ball to Narine is full and straight and the opener just about got an inside edge. He followed it up with another yorker that the West Indian squeezed away for a single. His next two balls to the southpaw were different; one was going away with the angle and the other was a bouncer, which pinged his helmet. There's a set pattern to how Bumrah has been used this year. One over in the powerplay, one in the middle phase and two at the death. If ever Pandya had to break that pattern, it was now. Kolkata, on a fresh but two-faced strip, had lost half their side for 57 just after the powerplay. The visitors used 'break glass in case of emergency' option Manish Pandey as an Impact Sub to steady a boat in danger of being shipwrecked. He last played in this format last year. Alas, Pandya stuck to the template and allowed Pandey and Venkatesh Iyer to stitch an 83-run stand. When he brought back Bumrah in the 14th over, they had already grown in confidence as Pandey ramped him for a six over third man. His third spell, though, splattered the stumps a few times, as both Mitchell Starc and Venkatesh had lost their stumps to deliveries out of a video game (magical, basically). He also snaffled Ramandeep Singh to return with figures of 3/18 in 3.5 overs. The problem, though, came from other sources. He has taken 17/274 across 11 games while averaging 16.11 at an economy of 6.25. The others have not been fit for purpose: Pandya (8/297 at 37; 11), Gerald Coetzee (13/341 at 26.2; 10.17), Nuwan Thushara (4/156 at 39; 10.40), and Piyush Chawla (5/222 at 44.4; 9.25). The other bowlers have frequently neutralised Bumrah's brilliance. It happened against Kolkata too. The others combined to concede 150 in 15 overs. Brief scores: Kolkata 169 all out in 19.5 overs (Venkatesh 70, Manish 42; Bumrah 3/18, Thushara 3/42, Hardik 2/44) beat Mumbai Indians 145 all out in 18.5 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 56; Mitchell Starc 4/33).

IPL 2024: A Special Win, Says Spinner Varun Chakravarthy As KKR Beat MI At Wankhede After 12 Years

Kolkata Knight Riders: Conceding that his team looked down and out despite a fighting 70 by Venkatesh Iyer, Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakravarthy said the 24-run victory over Mumbai Indians was special as it was their first win at Wankhede in 12 years. Jasprit Bumrah (3-18) and Nuwan Thushara (3-42) claimed three wickets apiece at each end of the KKR innings as Mumbai Indians restricted them to a paltry 169 despite brilliant fighting 70 off 52 balls by Venkatesh Iyer, who raised 83 runs for the sixth wicket in the company of Manish Pandey, rescuing their team from a precarious 57/5 at one stage. Chakravarthy praised Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey for pulling them to 169 which they eventually defended. This is a very special win because we were down and out in the first innings. The way Venkatesh and Manish pulled it back was great, said Chakravarthy at the presentation ceremony. Mitchell Starc claimed 4-33, bagging three wickets in four balls in the 19th over to end Mumbai's innings for 145 after spin twins Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy had reduced them to 61/4 with identical 2-22 hauls. Suryakumar Yadav waged a lone battle raising Mumbai Indians' hopes with a 35-ball 56, raising 49 runs for the seventh wicket with Tim David (24) before Andre Russell (2-30) and Mitchell Starc ended Mumbai's innings, sharing the last five wickets between them. Extremely good feeling, because we haven't won at Wankhede for 12 years. It was just a matter of one wicket (when David was batting and had brought down the equation to 26 off 11 balls], said Varun Chakravarthy. He said bowling in the second innings was very tough the dew made gripping the ball difficult. He said the wicket had also improved and the ball was not stopping and turning as it did when KKR batted. There was dew, but somehow we controlled our emotions. Second innings there was not much help (for the spinners) because of the dew. The batters did tell that the ball was stopping and turning. But when I came on to bowl, I realised it wasn't stopping, he said. Chakravarthy called fellow spinner Sunil Narine a legend as both of them finished with identical figures of 2-22 off four overs, bowling in tandem to start Mumbai Indians' downfall.

Hardik Pandya Admits Numerous Questions to be Answered But Time Needed

Hardik Pandya Admits Numerous Questions to be Answered But Time Needed All but out of play-off contention after eighth defeat in 11 games, Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya seemed as if he was groping in the dark for replies to all the unanswered questions hounding the five-time champions in yet another disastrous IPL season. Pandya was handed over the captaincy after the franchise removed national captain Rohit Sharma, something that the fans didn't really embrace with the colourful Baroda all-rounder being booed every time he entered the pitch. ''There are a lot of questions that will take time to answer. But for now, not much to say. Obviously, we couldn't form partnerships and kept losing wickets. Bowlers did a fantastic job on this track,'' Pandya said after his team failed to score 170, losing to KKR at home for the first time in 12 years. Pandya felt that it was better to bat late evening once dew set in but MI failed to capitalise. ''The wicket got better if I'm not wrong. Dew came in the second innings. Will go through the game and see what we can do better,'' he said. Pandya tried to put up a brave front as he spoke about fighting till the last match. ''You keep fighting, that's what I keep telling myself. It's challenging, but you take the challenges.'' His opposite number Shreyas Iyer was delighted that his team is on the cusp of a play-off berth. ''We are (knocking at the door) at the moment. Lot of thinking would have gone behind that (had we lost today). Just got to know about the stat (of KKR not winning at Wankhede for 12 years)... '' The ''Impact Player'' rule did help KKR as Manish Pandey, who came in at the fall of the fifth wicket, contributed 42 priceless runs. ''This Impact Player rule specifically helped us in this game. Manish has being eyeing an opportunity from the first game. We got to a commendable total. I told the boys that if we have got here, we can defend it,'' Iyer said. He was all praise for the performances from spin twins Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, both of whom returning with identical figures of 2 for 22. ''Spinners were unreal, absolutely spot on in executing their lines and lengths as discussed in team meetings. Kudos to them,'' Iyer said.

Shobhaa De | Jai Maharashtra! Jai India! May the worthy succeed

The state I proudly belong to (Maharashtra) was established in 1960. The Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti was actively demanding the formation of a separate state from 1956. The States Reorganisation Commission recommended the formation of states based on language, leading to the Bombay Reorganisation Act and the subsequent birth of two separate states on May 1, 1960 -- Maharashtra and Gujarat. Significantly, Maharashtra Diwas and Gujarat Gaurav Din overlap with International Labour Day, or Kamgar Din. And I hardly hear Marathi being spoken these days. Maharashtrians prefer Minglish! This year, the din in Maharashtra is deafening, as various political parties are busy slugging it out noisily as our D-Day approaches. The average voter is thoroughly confused, and rightly so. Very few know or care which Sena is in the fray -- the cast of characters is the same, but are standing under different leaking umbrellas. Asli Sena ya Naqli Sena Ki farak penda, pappey! The unprecedented heatwave across the state is discouraging participation, as voters ask themselves tiredly: Isnt it the same set of crooks whove looted Mumbai, taken citizens for a ride, and are now asking for our votes? Never before have the candidates displayed such naked opportunism as they leave one party to hop on to another partys bandwagon, after ensuring that their backsides are adequately covered. Who can keep track of these turncoats? Family politics (Pawars) have little to do with ideology and development -- it is all about sharing the loot. Ideology is passe, declared veteran leader Ram Naik. In all this, the Marathi Manoos is nowhere. Nepo netas, like nepo Bollywood bachchas, are hogging all the key seats, while the voter is being treated like a simple-minded fool, wholl trot up obediently on voting day, and do as he or she is told. No chance! Whether in my home state or elsewhere in India, the canny voter instinctively knows whats in his/her interest. Sick of the same old lies and unfulfilled promises, the voter is ready and armed to stage a stealth attack and seize this crucial election, and proving the pundits wrong once again. Perhaps this is mere wishful thinking. But female intuition comes with its own logic. Women read moods very acutely -- be it their husbands, childrens or the countrys. Looking at the tepid second phase of voting, its pretty apparent that the tide is turning and will turn further. Voters are sick of the bombast and chest-thumping, name calling and fake economic forecasts. For those who insist the Western media is meddling in our affairs -- yes, indeed, the Western media is closely monitoring each phase. That is the job of the media. Are their reports malicious and slanted? Perhaps. Are Western countries only interested in how their own economies will benefit if the election results overwhelmingly favour the BJP? No argument. Does any foreign nation really and truly care about India and Indians, beyond their own self-interest? You know the answer. The voter has a strong, analytical, capable mind that is not as easily brainwashed as the Western media believes. All the firangi self-styled ntellectuals and financial analysts who show up to tell us what we should be doing, for our own good, should be served rooh-afza, baraf ke saath , as they zip around the country, and told to chill in their luxury SUVs, while the natives go about their lives. Intelligence-gathering is a cushy job. But its worth remembering that our home-grown psephologists too have consistently got it wrong and misread the mood of the electorate. No matter what level of rigging and EVM tampering takes place, the Indian voter cannot be hoodwinked or beaten. Having said that, if despite the mass ennui and voter fatigue, the BJP does manage to form the next government at the Centre, critics will have to eat their words, suffer indigestion and concede the win in the true democratic spirit that the old India we love has always cherished. Alas, only the very nave and overly optimistic commentator can confidently claim that the INDIA alliance will win. The odds are heavily stacked against this motley, ragtag group that has flopped miserably at providing even a semblance of a united and strong Opposition. The tepid comeback has come too late, and there isnt enough ammo in the salvos aimed at the BJP to damage that party. Yes, there is some sympathetic public cluck-clucking for the underdog, and outrage over the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal. But none of this is sufficient to provide a cohesive counter narrative. Which is really a shame, given how Emotional IQ is such a valued attribute in our country. The right buttons should have been pressed two years ago by those whose ambitions were soaring unrealistically. So many missed opportunities! Hey Devaa! The electoral bonds issue, for one. The draconian misuse of the ED, functioning more like the dreaded Gestapo than a respected government agency. These were tipping points that could have been better leveraged by the INDIA bloc to alert voters about the dangers of authoritarian rule. But INDIA blew it! No matter. The wisdom, resilience and practicality of the Indian voter has always but always come through when most needed. While foreign investment forecasts are gung-ho about a clean sweep, and the markets are heady, even euphoric at the prospect of a Modi-led India, with financial top dogs predicting big gains, there are also watchful skeptics on the sidelines, quietly hedging their bets. The only debate worth engaging in is the JODO versus TODO one. The hope is that citizens will vote for long-term political/financial stability and religious harmony (JODO) over divisive politics and hate (TODO). Frankly, the former is better for business. And which young Indian does not dream in technicolour? That dreamer will instinctively vote for the party that creates jobs, provides opportunities. The time for theatrics is over. Nautanki entertains. But does not put food on empty tables. The hungry, unemployed Indian is an angry Indian. The word to describe such a person is hangry . Ignore hang-er at your own peril. And oh there are enough life lessons provided by our magnificent cricket heroes. Young boys like fruit-seller Abdul Rashids 22-year-old son Umran Malik from Jammu city, who has made it to Team India, despite there being no playground in his area. No godfather. No nothing. Just pure grit, determination and talent. Tomorrows India belongs to him and all others like him. Move over, has-beens. Your time is over.

IPL 2024: Pandya Blames Lack Of Partnerships For Mumbai's 24-run Defeat To KKR

Kolkata Knight Riders: Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya blamed his batters' inability to forge partnerships for their 24-run defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders in Match 51 of the Indian Premier League despite a brilliant effort by his bowlers at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday. Mitchell Starc claimed 4-33, claiming three wickets in the 19th over to end Mumbai innings for 145 after spin twins Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy had reduced them to 61/4 with identical 2-22 hauls. Pandya said the lack of partnerships undid the super effort by the bowlers and it will take time to find answers to the questions raised by their dismal performance throughout IPL 2024. Obviously we couldn't form partnerships and kept losing wickets. There are a lot of questions that will take time to answer. But for now, not much to say, said Hardik at the post-match presentation. He said though the wicket played better in the second innings and there was dew too to make it tough for the KKR bowlers, he will have to go through the game again to see what they can do better. Bowlers did a fantastic job on this track. The wicket got better if I'm not wrong. Dew came in the second innings. Will go through the game and see what we can do better. Asked what his team can do now with their chances of qualifying for the Playoff virtually hanging by a thin thread, Pandya said they will continue fighting. You keep fighting, that's what I keep telling myself. It's challenging, but you take the challenges, he signed off. Mumbai Indians have six points from 11 matches now and the maximum they can reach is 12 points if they win the remaining three matches. With four teams already scoring 12 or more points, and two with 10 points with matches to play, their chances of qualifying for the next stage look very bleak.

KKR beat MI after 12 years at Wankhede Stadium

Kolkata Knight Riders' bowling unit delivered a cohesive performance to secure a 24-run victory over five-time champions Mumbai Indians in an IPL match on Friday. While KKR's batsmen faltered by scoring only 169 runs and getting bowled out, with Venkatesh Iyer top-scoring with 70, Mumbai Indians' batting lineup struggled even more on a challenging wicket that required both skill and patience. They were dismissed for 145 in 18.5 overs, effectively ending their chances in the tournament, which has been difficult for captain Hardik Pandya.

KKR beat MI in an away game after 12 years

Kolkata Knight Riders' bowlers rose to the occasion and defended a modest total en route to a 24-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in an Indian Premier League match on Friday. Incidentally, it was KKR's first win over MI in Mumbai after 12 years. Opting to bowl, Jasprit Bumrah (3/18) was at his best as MI bowled out KKR for a modest 169. Sri Lankan medium pacer Nuwan Thushara (3/42) blew the top-order while Bumrah was menacing at the back end with skipper Hardik Pandya (2/44) also getting a couple of wickets. For KKR, Venkatesh Iyer (70 off 52) and Manish Pandey (42 off 31) made significant contributions to take the visitors to a decent but sub-par total. But MI faltered in their chase as they were bowled out for 145 in 18.5 overs. Suryakumar Yadav (56 off 35) and Tim David (24 off 20) were the notable contributors for MI in their failed chase. Mitchell Starc was the best bowler for KKR with figures of 4 for 33, while Varun Chakravarthy (2/22), Sunil Narine (2/22) and Andre Russell (2/30) picked up two wickets apiece. Brief Scores: Kolkata Knight Riders: 169 all out in 19.5 overs (Venkatesh Iyer 70, Manish Pandey 42; Jasprit Bumrah 3/18, Nuwan Thushara 3/42). The USA, a co-host of the event alongside the West Indies, announced its 15-member squad to be led by Gujarat-born Monank Patel. Right-handed batter Milind, who scored 1331 runs in the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy season, had before that played seven seasons for Delhi and then migrated to the USA in search of better opportunities. Milind, a Delhi-born cricketer, played for the state, Sikkim and Tripura in the Indian domestic before migrating to the US. The 33-year-old batter also played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League. During the 2018-19 Ranji Trophy, he finished as the highest run-scorer for the season playing for Sikkim before making his cricketing debut in the US in 2021 with The Philadelphians in the Minor Cricket League. Former Mumbai left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh has also made it to the side. Another well-known face in the squad is Corey Anderson, a former New Zealand all-rounder who represented the Black Caps in the 2015 ODI World Cup and the T20 World Cups in 2014 and 2016. He moved to the US in 2023 and made his debut with the side last month in a T20I against Canada. RBI Issues Norms to Restricts Banks Capital Market Exposure

Reserve Bank Of India. (Photo: DC/File) Reserve Bank Of India. (Photo: DC/File) Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday issued norms to reduce the risk faced by banks in their exposure to capital market in the case of issue of Irrevocable Payment Commitments (IPCs) in light of the T+1 settlement regime for stocks. The RBI issued a circular stating that only those custodian banks, who have an agreement with clients giving them an inalienable right over the securities for receiving a payout in the settlement, are permitted to issue IPCs. This clause will not be insisted upon if the transactions are pre-funded. The clear rupee funds have to be available in the customers account or, in case of foreign exchange deals, the banks nostro account has been credited before the issuance of the IPC, RBI said. The maximum intraday risk to the custodian banks issuing IPCs would be considered as capital market exposure (CME) at 30 per cent of the settlement amount. The limit of 30 per cent for risk is based on the assumption of a 20 per cent downward price movement of the equities on T+1, with an additional margin of 10 per cent for further downward movement of price. Earlier, the risk mitigation measures were prescribed based on T+2 rolling settlement for equities (T being the trade day).

IPL 2024: Venkatesh Iyer Hits 70, But KKR Shot Out For 169 As Thushara, Bumrah Claim Three Each

Ilandari Dewage Nuwan Thushara: Venkatesh Iyer struck a fighting half-century but Mumbai Indians rode on three-fers by pace duo Jasprit Bumrah and Nuwan Thushara to bowl out Kolkata Knight Riders for 169 in Match 51 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium here on Friday. Thushara justified skipper Hardik Pandya's decision to bowl first by claiming three wickets in his first two overs. With Pandya and Piyush Chawla chipping in with a wicket each, KKR were 57/5 soon after the Power-play. But Venkatesh Iyer played a brilliant, controlled knock to score 70 off 52 balls and raised an 83-run partnership with Manish Pandey (42) for the sixth wicket to take them to 140. However, Bumrah claimed three wickets off 18, two of them in the same over, to hasten KKR's downfall as they managed a paltry score. The name Ilandari Dewage Nuwan Thushara -- is a mouthful for anyone. On Friday, the Sri Lankan pacer with a slingy bowling action that reminds of Mumbai Indians legend Lasith Malinga, proved a handful for Kolkata Knight Riders batters. The 29-year-old landed three lethal blows in his first spell of two overs, sending back the dangerous Phil Salt (5), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (13) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (6) as KKR slumped to 28/3 in three overs. Thushara has claimed only one wicket in the three matches he has played for MI this season. But Friday proved his day as he opened the bowling and struck the first blow in the opening over itself. Salt smashed the third delivery of his first over down the ground for a four but after bowling a wide down the legside, Thushara had his revenge as he got the ball to nip away off the pitch and Salt, attempting to play it past midwicket, gets a leading edge behind point where Tilak Verma pouches it despite a collision with Naman Dhir. Raghuvanshi hammered Thushara for a six, lifting him over midwicket as the bowler drifted onto the pad -- the first over costing 14 runs but more importantly Thushara claimed the first wicket. Raghuvanshi hammered the Sri Lankan for another six off the first ball of his second over but Thushara had his revenge off the next ball, as he changed the line and cut down the pace, getting the batter to pop a simple catch to Suryakumar Yadav at cover. Shreyas Iyer struck a four off the first delivery he faced and a double on the second before spooning a catch to Tim David at mid-on while trying to flick a fullish delivery of this pads, beaten for pace this time. Hardik Pandya brought himself into the attack and was carted for a huge six by Sunil Narine off his first delivery. But the Mumbai Indians skipper had his man off the next delivery as this time he out-thought the West Indies batter with pace and bowled him. KKR were struggling at 57/4 after the Power-play and it became 57/5 when Piyush Chawla foxed him with a slower one as the batter chipped it back to the bowler for a simple catch. Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey, brought in as an Impact Substitute for Raghuvanshi, revived the innings with an 83-run stand, starting cautiously before unleashing some super shots to boost the scoring rate. Venkatesh started by hitting two fours off Gerald Coetzee in the fourth over and took a four off Naman Dhir. After a spell of slow batting, he exploded into action in the 12th over, hammering a four and a six off Coetzee, the maximum over extra-cover fence executed quite well. He reached his half-century off 36 balls, studded with five boundaries and a six. The experienced Pandey, who tonked Bumrah for a four and six in three balls in the 14th over, hammered Pandya over long-on for another six but fell soon after as Hardik sent down a slow cutter wide off off-stump and the Karnataka batter was caught by substitute Brevis at extra-cover. Pandy made 42 off 31 balls, hitting two fours and as many sixes, but did his job in his first outing as he helped KKR recover from a precarious position. Disaster struck KKR when Venkatesh Iyer and Andre Russell, after hitting a six each off Pandya, got into a horrendous mix-up, resulting in the West Indies dasher getting run out. Venkatesh Iyer continued to propel the KKR innings but Bumrah expedited their demise by landing two blows in the 18th over, sending back Ramandeep Singh and Mitchell Starc with two superb deliveries. From 140/5, the Knight Riders slumped to 155/9 and their innings finally ended with a ball to spare when Bumrah beat with an un-hittable delivery as he lost his balance and fell over, trying to flick him to the boundary. Only three KKR batters managed to reach double figures as the Mumbai Indians bowlers used the conditions perfectly to get themselves into a strong position to score their fourth victory in IPL 2024, Brief scores: Kolkata Knight Riders 169 all out in 19.5 overs (Venkatesh Iyer 70, Manish Pandey 42; Jasprit Bumrah 3-18, Nuwan Thushara 3-42, Hardik Pandya 2-44) against Mumbai Indians.

Mumbai: CBI nabs Income Tax officer for bribery; Rs 4 lakh seized The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended an Income Tax officer in Mumbai after he was caught while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a complainant. The bribe was allegedly solicited in exchange for issuing a lower Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) certificate for the sale of a property belonging to the complainant's maternal uncle who was an NRI, the CBI said. According to the allegations, the accused demanded 2 per cent of the total property deal value, which amounted to Rs 5.04 crore. After negotiations, the demand was reduced to 1 per cent of the deal value. Eventually, the accused agreed to accept a bribe of Rs 4 lakh. The CBI, acting on the complaint, set a trap and apprehended the accused while he was accepting the bribe in his Mumbai office on Thursday. In subsequent searches conducted at the accused's office and residential premises in Mumbai, the CBI recovered Rs 15 lakh in cash, gold ornaments, and documents related to investments in both immovable and movable properties. These findings are currently under scrutiny as part of the ongoing investigation, the agency said. The arrest underscores the CBI's commitment to rooting out corruption and upholding integrity within government institutions. Investigations into the matter are ongoing as the CBI continues its efforts to maintain transparency and accountability, it stated. (ANI)

RBI proposes higher provisions for project finance

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday raised the provisions for under construction infrastructure projects and asked lenders to monitor any build-up of stress in a project on an ongoing basis and initiate a resolution plan well in advance. All lenders will have to maintain a general provision of 5 per cent of the loan outstanding on all existing as well as fresh loans when the project is in the construction phase. Once the project reaches the Operational phase, the provision can be reduced to 2.5 per cent provided that the project has started generating cash sufficient to cover the lenders' repayment requirements said the RBI in its draft Prudential Framework for Income Recognition, Asset Classification and Provisioning pertaining to advances-Projects under Implementation. Project loans that were not overdue or stressed so far attracted a provision of 0.4 per cent as per a 2021 circular available on the RBI's website. Lenders desirous to have project finance exposures shall have a Board-approved policy for resolution of stress in the projects on occurrence of a credit event. For any project, all mandatory pre-requisites should be in place before financial closure. An indicative list of such pre-requisites includes availability of encumbrance free land and/or right of way, environmental clearance, legal clearance, regulatory clearances, etc., as applicable for the project. However, for infrastructure projects under the PPP model, land availability to the extent of 50 per cent or more can be considered sufficient by lenders to achieve financial closure, said the central bank. Occurrence of a default during the construction phase, with any of the lenders in the project finance arrangement, within or outside the consortium, shall trigger a collective resolution, said the RBI. The regulator also said lenders coming together in a consortium to finance projects worth up to Rs 1500 crore must have an exposure of at least 10 per cent. The floor could be set at 5 per cent for larger projects. It asked banks to have clear visibility on the date on which a project is expected to begin commercial operations and increase provisions in case operations are delayed.

Shiv Sena (UBT) ad actor demands apology from BJP leader who called him porn star

Mumbai: Actor Pyarali aka Raj Nayani has threatened a legal action against Maharashtra BJP leader Chitra Wagh for labelling him as a porn star. He has demanded a public apology from her threatening to file a defamation case if she fails to do so. Wagh, who is also the state president of the Maharashtra BJP womens wing, in a press conference on Thursday had alleged that the actor featured in the advertisement released by the Shiv Sena (UBT), Raj Nayani, was a porn star. She had also presented pictures of Nayani in a compromising pose with a female actress in a scene from his adult web series. The Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena was trying to inculcate a culture of porn, pub and party in Maharashtra, she alleged. Reacting to it, Nayani on Friday came out with a video, in which he accused Wagh tarnishing his image for her political gains. He also clarified that the images presented by Wagh were from a web series role and not indicative of his personal character. In the video, Nayani stated, I am a character actor. Chitra Wagh should take her words back for insulting an artist. She should apologize or I will be compelled to file a defamation claim against her. Replying to the BJP leaders claims, Nayani said, Chitra Wagh is an educated woman. When an artist works in a movie or show, they have to portray characters according to the needs of the role. She should know this. He further commented, She used pictures from a web series I had worked on and claimed that I was a porn star. This claim has offended me and she has defamed me by calling my acting porn. I worked on the Shiv Sena (UBT) group's advertisement. She looked up my previous work and assumed that I must be a porn actor. The photos that she displayed in the press conference were from the web series I had worked on, it was part of my role, Nayani said. Despite various attempts, Wagh could not be reached for her comments.

Those leaving for destinations within the State like Madurai and Coimbatore are mostly headed to salubrious hill stations like Kodiakanal and Ooty and the others, too, are travelling with families with different places to take a break from the sultry weather that is becoming unbearable day after day. According to airport sources about 40 special flights are being operated from Chennai over and above the regular services, leading to the heavy rush since morning hours at the airport. Apart from the heat, many politicians are also leaving the city with families in the aftermath of the Lok Sabha elections, sources said. Also many families are visiting the hometowns across the State in view of the summer vacation for schools and colleges, adding to the crowds at the airport and prompting the airlines to cash in on the increased demand for tickets. Hitherto, only three onward and three return flights were operated to Thoothukudi, the airport that caters to the people in the southern districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari. But now four plus four flights are being operated. Similarly the demand for seats in the flights to Trichy, the city in the central part of the State that connects many towns and villages in several districts, has gone up and six flights are taking off from Chennai every day as against the four before the onset of the summer. To Coimbatore, too, the number of daily flights have been increased from 6 to 8 and for Madurai it is 7 now as against the earlier 5 and many of those passengers are leaving for destinations in the hill stations near them. Similarly, many people are also taking holidays in Bengaluru and Hyderabad in the States of Karnataka and Telangana, impelling the flight operators to raise the number of services. So Bengaluru now has 11 flights as against the earlier 8 and Hyderabad has presently 14 services one way while it used to be 10 plus 10 otherwise. Even people travelling to faraway destinations in the country and abroad has increased phenomenally with a thrice a week direct flights being introduced for Durgapur from mid-May. CBI apprehends income tax officer for alleged bribery of Rs 4 lakh

CBI apprehends income tax officer for alleged bribery of Rs 4 lakh The CBI has arrested an income tax officer in Mumbai for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh in exchange for issuing a 'lower TDS certificate' on the sale of a property, officials said on Friday. They said Vikas Bansal had allegedly demanded two per cent of the deal value of the property as bribes at first but later agreed to one per cent which comes to Rs 5.04 lakh. The deal value of the property was Rs 5.04 crore. The case pertains to the sale of a property in Mumbai's Byculla owned by an NRI, who wanted to sell it due to some personal reasons and needed a lower TDS certificate from the income tax department. As per the complaint lodged in the case, an application was submitted on the portal of the income tax department for a 'lower TDS certificate'. ''However, no response was received from the Assessing Officer (AO). Subsequently, on April 29, 2024, the complainant along with representative of their CA visited and met Vikas Bansal, ITO, the Assessing Officer who was dealing with the said matter, at Income Tax Office, Air India Building, Nariman Point, Mumbai,'' according to the FIR. Bansal allegedly demanded a bribe of two per cent of the deal value but reduced it during negotiations. The complainant then approached the CBI, according to the officials. After verification of allegations, the central probe agency laid a trap and Bansal was caught accepting Rs 4 lakh of the total bribe amount, they added.

NTPC Communications Manager Apprehended by CBI for Accepting Rs 8 Lakh Bribe: Officials

NTPC Communications Manager Apprehended by CBI for Accepting Rs 8 Lakh Bribe: Officials The CBI on Friday arrested a senior manager of corporate communications at NTPC for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 8 lakh to pass bills, officials said. The agency arrested Vijay Kumar, a senior manager of corporate communications at NTPC, in Mumbai, where he had flown in from Delhi to receive the illegal gratification, they said. The vice-president of an advertisement company had filed a complaint against Kumar for allegedly demanding a bribe to pass bills worth about Rs 40 lakh, they added. The advertisement company had installed booths in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Puducherry in January- February on behalf of NTPC for which it had submitted an invoice of Rs 40 lakh. The work completion certificate was not enclosed as they were to be issued from the local authorities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the Puducherry administration, they said. When the company's representative visited local authority offices of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and in Puducherry and requested the issuance of work completion certificates, he was told that an email or call would be required from the NTPC. According to the officials, when the advertisement company vice-president contacted Kumar for communication to the local authorities, he allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 6 lakh on assurance that he would take care of the bills, which would be cleared without any hindrance. Kumar later increased the demand to Rs 9.45 lakh but brought it down to Rs 8 lakh after negotiation, they said. On getting the complaint, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) laid a trap in Mumbai where Kumar was nabbed red-handed taking the bribe. Kumar was later arrested and searches were conducted at his residence in Noida.
