Indonesia to permanently relocate 10,000 people after Ruang volcano eruptions

Indonesia to permanently relocate 10,000 people after Ruang volcano eruptions The Indonesian government will permanently relocate almost 10,000 residents after a series of explosive eruptions of the Ruang volcano has raised concerns about the dangers of residing on the island in future, a minister said on Friday. About 9,800 people live on Ruang island, in the province of North Sulawesi, but in recent weeks all residents have been forced to evacuate after the mountain has continued to spew incandescent lava and columns of ash kilometres into the sky. Authorities this week raised the alert status of the volcano to the highest level, closed the provincial airport in Manado, and also warned of the a possible tsunami if parts of the mountain collapse into the surrounding waters. Hundreds of simple but permanent homes would be built in the Bolaang Mongondow area to facilitate the relocations, said coordinating human development minister Muhadjir Effendy, after a cabinet meeting to discuss the volcano on Friday. As instructed by President Joko Widodo, we will build houses that meet disaster-standards, he said, adding that the site was located about 200 km (125 miles) from Ruang island. Mount Ruang began to dramatically erupt last month, with experts saying the eruptions were triggered by increased seismic activity, including deep sea earthquakes. The mountain erupted again on Tuesday, causing damage to some homes and forcing residents to evacuate from the Tagulandang island, where they had initially sought refuge, to the provincial capital of Manado. Roads and buildings on Tagulandang were blanketed in a thick layer of volcanic ash, and the roofs of some homes had collapsed, according a Reuters witness. The volcano had not erupted on Friday but Manado's Sam Ratulangi Airport remained closed until the evening due to the spread of volcanic ash. Indonesia straddles the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of high seismic activity where multiple tectonic plates meet.

Congress attempting to divide People: PM Modi

Ahmedabad: In his recent address at an election rally in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of attempting to divide Hindus for political gain through appeasement tactics. He criticized the Congress for proposing religious-based reservation and alleged that they are playing a dangerous game to create division among Hindus. Modi referenced Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's statement about Lord Ram and Lord Shiva, stating it was made with malicious intent to sow discord among Hindu communities. Modi also criticized the Congress for rejecting an invitation to the consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya and accused them of consistently making detrimental decisions. He highlighted the Congress' manifesto, alleging that it includes appeasement politics by proposing separate quotas for minorities, particularly Muslims, in government tenders. The Prime Minister emphasized that government contracts are currently awarded based on expertise and capability, not caste or religion, and warned against the destructive consequences of implementing religious-based reservation in the allocation of tenders. Modi condemned the Congress' alleged attempts to divide the country along religious lines and vowed to launch a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the Constitution following the announcement of poll results on June 4. He affirmed his commitment to celebrating the Constitution's 75th anniversary and exposing those seeking to alter it, stating that it is imperative to teach them a lesson.

Jagan slams Naidu for ignoring peoples welfare in Andhra Pradesh

Naraspur: Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy on Friday slammed the Opposition leader and TDP president N Chandrababu Naidu for ignoring the welfare of the people during his tenure as Chief Minister. Launching a blistering attack on Naidu during an election campaign, Jagan Mohan Reddy said the former did nothing for the people. If you ask Naidu, who worked as a Chief Minister three times for 14 years, about one good work he did for the welfare of people during his regime, there will be no reply from him, he said. Naidus entire tenure was full of unfulfilled promises and deception, he alleged. Thanking people for attending the election campaign in large numbers in scorching heat, Jagan Mohan Reddy asked them to think wisely before casting their vote as Naidu has once again came up with promises in the name of super-6. He sought to know what had happened to the promises including unemployment dole to youth and making a Singapore-like capital city in Andhra Pradesh. He (Naidu) ignored all the promises mentioned in the manifesto in 2014 and he is again announcing super-6 promises which cannot be fulfilled given his previous track record, Jagan Mohan Reddy said. Believing Naidus unfulfilled promises is nothing but putting your head into pythons mouth, he said, adding that he was fighting Kurukshetrayudham not only for electing MPs and MLAs but for continuing various welfare schemes being implemented by the YSRCP government in the last 59 months in the State.

Nearly 2,200 people have been arrested during pro-Palestinian protests on US college campuses

LOS ANGELES (AP) Police have arrested nearly 2,200 people during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the United States in recent weeks, sometimes using riot gear, tactical vehicles and flash-bang devices to clear tent encampments and occupied buildings. One officer accidentally discharged his gun inside a Columbia University administration building while clearing out protesters camped inside, authorities said. No one was injured by the officer's mistake late Tuesday inside Hamilton Hall on the Columbia campus, the NYPD said Thursday. He was trying to use the flashlight attached to his gun at the time and instead fired a single round that struck a frame on the wall. There were other officers but no students in the immediate vicinity, officials said. Body camera footage shows when the officer's gun went off, but the district attorney's office is conducting a review, a standard practice. Police break up protests, make arrests at UCLA, Yale, Dartmouth, New York schools More than 100 people were taken into custody during the Columbia crackdown, just a fraction of the total arrests stemming from recent campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war. A tally by The Associated Press recorded at least 56 incidents of arrests at 43 different U.S. colleges or universities since April 18. The figures are based on AP reporting and statements from universities and law enforcement agencies. Early Thursday, officers surged against a crowd of demonstrators at University of California, Los Angeles, ultimately taking at least 200 protesters into custody after hundreds defied orders to leave, some forming human chains as police fired flash-bangs to break up the crowds. Police tore apart a fortified encampments barricade of plywood, pallets, metal fences and dumpsters, then pulled down canopies and tents. Like at UCLA, tent encampments of protesters calling on universities to stop doing business with Israel or companies they say support the war in Gaza have spread across other campuses nationwide in a student movement unlike any other this century. Israel has branded the protests antisemitic, while Israels critics say it uses those allegations to silence opposition. Although some protesters have been caught on camera making antisemitic remarks or violent threats, protest organizers some of whom are Jewish call it a peaceful movement to defend Palestinian rights and protest the war. President Joe Biden on Thursday defended the right of students to peaceful protest but decried the disorder of recent days. The demonstrations began at Columbia on April 17 with students calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war, which has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to the Health Ministry there. Israel launched its offensive in Gaza after Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, on Oct. 7 and took roughly 250 hostages in an attack on southern Israel. On April 18, the NYPD cleared Columbia's initial encampment and arrested roughly 100 protesters. The demonstrators set up new tents and defied threats of suspension, and escalated their actions early Tuesday by occupying Hamilton Hall, an administration building that was similarly seized in 1968 by students protesting racism and the Vietnam War. Roughly 20 hours later, officers stormed the hall. Video showed police with zip ties and riot shields streaming through a second-floor window. Police had said protesters inside presented no substantial resistance. The officer's gun went off at 9:38 p.m., the NYPD said, about 10 minutes after police started pouring into Hamilton Hall. The department did not name the officer, whose actions were first reported by news outlet The City on Thursday. Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters remain on UCLA campus despite police ordering them to leave The confrontations at UCLA also played out over several days this week. UCLA Chancellor Gene Block told alumni on a call Thursday afternoon that the trouble started after a permitted pro-Israel rally was held on campus Sunday and fights broke out and live mice were tossed into the pro-Palestinian encampment later that day. In the following days, administrators tried to find a peaceful solution with members of the encampment and expected things to remain stable, Block said. That changed late Tuesday, he said, when counterdemonstrators attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment. Campus administrators and police did not intervene or call for backup for hours. No one was arrested that night, but at least 15 protesters were injured. The delayed response drew criticism from political leaders, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and officials pledged an independent review. New York police clear pro-Palestinian protesters from Columbia University after occupation By Wednesday, the encampment had become much more of a bunker and there was no other solution but to have police dismantle it, Block said. The hourslong standoff went into Thursday morning as officers warned over loudspeakers that there would be arrests if the crowd at the time more than 1,000 strong inside the encampment as well as outside of it did not disperse. Hundreds left voluntarily, while another 200-plus remained and were ultimately taken into custody. Meanwhile, protest encampments at other schools across the U.S. have been cleared by police resulting in more arrests or closed voluntarily. But University of Minnesota officials reached an agreement with protesters not to disrupt commencements, and similar compromises have been made at Northwestern University in suburban Chicago, Rutgers University in New Jersey and Brown University in Rhode Island. Taiwan bans its people from working at China's Confucius Institutes

Taiwan bans its people from working at China's Confucius Institutes Confucius Institutes (CIs), non-profit educational institutions funded by the Chinese government, have been added to a list of political, governmental, and military bodies of China where Taiwan's citizens are banned from working, the Central News Agency (CNA) reported, citing the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC). Announcing the decision, the MAC in a press release said that the revisions to an existing act ban people of Taiwan from working for any Chinese organization engaged in matters linked to national identity and loyalty, united front work, or which poses a threat to national security. The revised guidelines particularly prohibit citizens from working at Confucius Institutes -- non-profit educational institutes funded by the Chinese government to spread the culture of China. These educational institutes have also come under suspicion as tools for political influence, CNA reported. The organizations which have been included in the blacklist were the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) which is China's semi-official body in charge of handling technical and business matters with Taiwan and All-China Youth Federation and the All-China Federation of Taiwanese Compatriots. As per the Act Governing Relations Between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (the Cross-Strait Act), people who work for banned organizations can face a fine of NT$100,000 to NT$500,000, CNA reported. According to the Act, the person who breaches the rule is a government official or a person working in defense, foreign affairs, intelligence, China affairs, or other relevant agencies whose work is linked to matters of national security or other classified information, can face up to three years in prison. The MAC said the Act has been revised to stop China from intentionally exploiting the regulations. It further said that it had originally established the guidelines in 2004 in accordance with the authority given to it under the Cross-Strait Act. The MAC said that the rules, however, remained unchanged in the past 20 years, even as the Chinese underwent significant structural changes, according to a Central News Agency report. After the announcement, the Taiwanese counterpart to the ARATS, the Straits Exchange Foundation, announced it would make efforts to explain the changes in the law to Taiwanese people travelling frequently between Taiwan and China, to ensure they do not accidentally run afoul of the law. Covid-19: New variant of Corona 'FLiRT' surfaced, scientists said - even people who have taken booster dose are not safe

The ongoing global Corona epidemic has still not stopped. Recent reports suggest that the virus has once again undergone mutation due to which a new set of variants is being seen. The sub-variant generated due to mutation in the coronavirus has been named 'FLiRT'. Researchers said that this new variant also belongs to the Omicron family. It is believed to be a form of the JN.1 variant, due to which cases of infection were seen increasing rapidly in many countries last year. According to American media reports, this new variant of Corona has been found in wastewater monitoring. Data scientist J. In the model released last week, Weiland had again advised people to be alert regarding coronavirus infection. The team of scientists said that some such mutations have been seen in this new variant of Corona which can cause great concern. In summer, there may be a possibility of an increase in coronavirus cases due to new variants in many countries including America. Changes seen in the spike protein of the virus Dr. Megan L., Dean at Yale School of Public Health in America. Rainie says changes have been seen in the spike protein of the new variant of Corona 'Filirt' which makes it capable of easily infecting people by dodging the body's immune system. Experts have expressed concern that only 22% of American adults have received the latest COVID-19 vaccine, and for many people, it has been a long time since they were last infected with the virus, so the body's defense system against the virus is also weakened. Is. In such a situation, the risk of infection with the new variant and its serious form may also be higher. Even people who have taken booster doses are not safe Dr. Thomas.A., an infectious disease expert at the University of Buffalo. Rousseau says, that not only in America, there is a high population of people with weak immunity all over the world. In such a situation, if another wave comes due to some new variant of Corona, then it can increase our sensitivity. There is also data showing that even people who have received the latest Covid booster dose cannot be considered completely protected against a potential surge. Every time a new mutation is seen in the variant, the risks of infection may increase further. A preprint study released this week by Harvard University researchers on the vaccine and its efficacy offers strong evidence that even the latest booster shots may not fully protect against JN.1 and its sub-variants. . It is noteworthy that JN.1 variants had spread globally during winter and this variant is still considered to be the main reason for 95% of Covid-19 cases in the US. In the US alone, this variant reported a 21% increase in infection cases in December and 85% by the third week of January. Vaccination is the best way to protect against coronavirus Looking at the potential dangers of corona, scientists said that even though there are many questions about whether those who take booster shots are not completely protected from corona, vaccination is still the best way to avoid the threat of corona. For those who have not received the latest booster, especially those who are above 65 years of age or have weak immunity, a booster shot of corona becomes necessary. Scientists say, considering that the virus is constantly evolving and our immunity is also weakening, an annual booster dose should also be recommended for safety. (PC: ISTOCK)

People of Jharkhand seething in anger, will throw out BJP looting its mineral resources: Kalpana Soren

JHARKHAND: Kalpana Soren, wife of former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren, on Thursday said that the people of Jharkhand are seething in anger against the BJP government and will throw out this tyrannical force which is looting its rich mineral resources. In an exclusive interview with PTI, Kalpana said her husband's arrest was unexpected and it triggered a shock in the JMM and the family. She said it is not in the DNA of tribals to bow and Hemant Soren would emerge stronger. We have full faith in the judiciary and we are waiting for Hemant to come out on bail and campaign for the Lok Sabha polls. He is innocent and has been trapped in a pre-planned conspiracy by the BJP-led government at the Centre, she said. Kalpana, who has emerged as a new face of the party, termed the BJP a tyrannical force that is allegedly hell-bent to oppress the opposition. How will the Constitution be saved when you are arresting opposition leaders who are working for the poor, tribals and dalits. They (BJP) only tell lies. The saffron party's 400+ slogan has pushed the temperature here above 400 degrees, she added. On her husband languishing in jail for over 90 days, Kalpana said, I have a question as to why all Enforcement Directorate (ED) action takes place only in opposition-ruled states. Jailed ex-Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren be freed soon after defeating tyrannical forces: Kalpana On the alleged rift in the family, Kalpana said, There is full unity. Hemant Ji's brother was there during my nomination for Gandey bypoll on April 29. On her sister-in-law Sita Soren quitting the party, Kalpana said, It was her decision to part ways with JMM and my best wishes are always with her. Kalpana, 48, who is credited with infusing a new vigour into Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) rank and file after Soren's arrest earlier this year, said politics has never been her choice but circumstances thrust her into it. I will fight against injustice and dictatorial forces as bowing is not in tribal DNA. I will follow my husband's footsteps. He chose to court imprisonment rather than compromise his values. I am his better-half and will see to it that tyrannical forces get a befitting reply, Kalpana said. My husband's arrest by the ED was politically motivated and part of a plan to coerce him to join the BJP. His arrest is part of a plan by the central government to browbeat, intimidate and humiliate him but they will get a befitting reply in the elections, she said. Kalpana filed her nomination as the JMM candidate for Gandey assembly bypoll on April 29. Voting for the seat is scheduled on May 20 along with the parliamentary elections in the state. The seat in Giridih district fell vacant following the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. Kalpana Soren files nomination as JMM candidate from Gandey assembly seat Kalpana, a homemaker with MTech and MBA qualifications, completed her school education from Baripada in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, and obtained her engineering and MBA degrees in Bhubaneswar. Her political journey began at the 51st foundation day celebration of the JMM here on March 4, when she claimed that a conspiracy had been orchestrated by her opponents ever since the Hemant Soren-led coalition government came to power in 2019. Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam on January 31. Speculations regarding Kalpana's candidacy arose following the resignation of Ahmad in December, with the BJP claiming it was to facilitate her candidature in case the ED issued summonses to her husband. Hemant Soren had, however, then dismissed rumours of Kalpana contesting from Gandey, calling it BJP's fabrication.

Nearly 3,000 people are languishing in jail unfairly. We must set them free

There is consensus in parliament that indeterminate sentences are unjust. So why is the government dragging its heels? Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) is chair of the justice select committee Last year I tried to lay to rest a ghost that has haunted four successive governments: the fate of those still in prison under imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentences. The sentences, now widely acknowledged as both wrong in principle and unworkable in practice, were described by the former supreme court justice Lord Brown as the greatest single stain on our criminal justice system and by David Blunkett as the biggest regret of his time in government . Yet, as I quickly found out, there is still a lack of political will to end this injustice and neither the government nor the opposition supported my amendment to the victims and prisoners bill. IPP sentences were introduced in 2003 as a new form of custodial sentence. Designed to appear tough on crime, they were indeterminate sentences that could be given to offenders who had committed violent or sexual offences and were deemed to pose a significant risk of causing harm to the public. Unlike a normal sentence, those given an IPP sentence would have to serve a minimum tariff in prison before being detained for an indefinite period until they could prove to the Parole Board that they were no longer a risk. Sir Bob Neill KC (Hon) is the member of parliament for Bromley and Chislehurst and a former local government minister. He is currently chair of the justice select committee Continue reading...
