Heatwave to Persist for Two More Days in Eastern and Southern Peninsular India

Heatwave to Persist for Two More Days in Eastern and Southern Peninsular India The record-breaking heatwave spell affecting east India and parts of the southern peninsular region continued unabated on Friday, with temperatures settling above 44 degrees Celsius in at least 13 places. Intensely hot conditions prevailed in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Maximum temperatures settled in the range of 43-46 degrees Celsius in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Vidarbha, Madhya Maharashtra and 40-43 degrees in parts of Gangetic West Bengal, Marathwada and north interior Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh sizzled at 46.3 degrees Celsius, the highest maximum temperature in the country on Friday. The mercury settled at 44.6 degrees Celsius in Odisha's Boudh, 45 degrees in Khammam (Telangana), 46.2 degrees in Cuddapah (Andhra Pradesh), 43.4 degrees in Erode (Tamil Nadu), and 44.6 degrees in West Bengal's Kalaikunda. The IMD said the ongoing heatwave spell in east and south peninsular India will continue until May 5-6 and abate thereafter. The Met office on Wednesday said above-normal maximum temperatures are likely over most parts of the country in May and a significantly high number of heatwave days expected over the northern plains, central region and adjoining areas of peninsular India. April witnessed record-smashing maximum temperatures in east, northeast and southern peninsular India, prompting health warnings from government agencies and some states to suspend in-person classes in schools. A number of stations recorded their highest-ever April day temperatures. Five active western disturbances led to rainfall, thunderstorms and hail storms over north and central India at regular intervals in April, preventing heat waves. IMD data shows that heat waves this April were far worse than in 2023, the warmest year on record so far. This trend is likely to continue in May, with around eight to 11 heatwave days predicted over the south Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada and the Gujarat regions. The remaining parts of Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and some parts of Chhattisgarh, interior Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, north interior Karnataka and Telangana may record five to seven heatwave days during the month. Normally, the northern plains, central India and adjoining areas of peninsular India experience around three days of heat waves in May. India witnessed two spells of heat waves in April -- from April 5 to 7 and April 15 to 30. The IMD attributed the prolonged heatwave spell over east, northeast and south peninsular India in April to the absence of thunderstorms and an anticyclone at lower levels over the west central Bay of Bengal and the adjoining eastern coasts of India. This caused the sea breeze to cut off over Odisha and West Bengal on most days. The weather office said south peninsular India recorded an average maximum temperature of 31 degrees Celsius in April, the second-highest since 1901. The mean temperature (28.12 degrees Celsius) in April in east and northeast India was the highest since 1901, it said. The IMD said above-normal maximum temperatures have become frequent over south peninsular India since the 1980s. The region recorded 12.6 mm rainfall in April -- the fifth lowest since 1901 and the second-lowest since 2001. According to IMD data, the number of heatwave days this April was the highest in 15 years in Gangetic West Bengal and nine years in Odisha. Odisha also experienced the longest heatwave spell (16 days) in April since 2016. Amid the prevailing but weakening El Nino conditions, the IMD had earlier warned of extreme heat during the April-June period, coinciding with the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections. Hundreds of thousands of voters had to cope with the searing heat when they stepped out to exercise their franchise in the second phase of the elections on April 26. Polling for 94 constituencies across 12 states will take place on May 7. The weather office had earlier expected four to eight heatwave days in different parts of the country in April against a normal of one to three days. Ten to 20 heatwave days are expected against a normal of four to eight in the entire April-June period.

Giants Clash for Treble Glory: Mohun Bagan Set to Face Mumbai City FC in ISL Final

Giants Clash for Treble Glory: Mohun Bagan Set to Face Mumbai City FC in ISL Final Mohun Bagan will look to cap off their fairytale season with a historic treble as they face Mumbai City FC in the ISL summit clash at Salt Lake Stadium, with 62,000 partisan fans expected to cheer their guts out and paint the stands in green and maroon, creating an electrifying atmosphere here on Saturday. The season began with the Mariners winning the Durand Cup for the first time after 23 years. Having slipped to fifth in the table at midway stage, Antonio Habas took over from Juan Ferrando and led them to their maiden League Winners Shield. Two weeks after they defeated Mumbai City FC 2-1 to win their maiden Shield, the two teams will return to the same venue of Salt Lake Stadium with an aim to complete a rare double in the ISL and a hattrick of titles in one season. As per noted football statistician Hari Prasad Chattopadhyay, the last time Mohun Bagan won three titles or more was more than 23 years back when they had won the erstwhile National Football League (NFL), Federation Cup, Calcutta Premier Division League, Sikkim Gold Cup and Bordoloi Trophy. The coach was India captain Sunil Chhetri's father-in-law Subroto Bhattacharyya. Mumbai City FC have done it before in 2020-21 and the stage will be set for Mohun Bagan to follow suit. ''Statistics have no relevance. We have to continue playing well and complete the circle,'' the 66-year-old Spanish tactician said in the pre-match media interaction. Three years back, Mohun Bagan had squandered a 1-0 lead to to suffer a 1-2 defeat against the same team at the ISL final held in Margao, which was played behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But revenge is not on Habas' minds. ''I'm not about revenge; that's stuff you see in movies or with the mafia. It's just another game against tough opponents, and it's going to be a great show for the ISL,'' Habas said. The target however is to finish the game in ''45 minutes'', said Habas making it clear that he will go all-out in attack with Anirudh Thapa, Jason Cummings, Dimitri Petratos and Manvir Singh. Asked about this strategy, he said: ''To finish it in 45 minutes.'' ''Obviously we don't want to go to extra team. It's hot out there so better to finish it in 90 minutes.'' The 66-year-old, who has two ISL titles one Winners Shield making him the most successful coach of the top-tier league, further said he's in the fag-end of his career. ''I'm in the final stage of my coaching career and it's a proud moment for me.'' Mohun Bagan's attack will be boosted by a fit-again India midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad who came off the bench to strike the winning goal against Odisha FC in the return leg ISL semi-final. While Sahal will be fit, Armando Sadiku will miss the match. Mumbai City on the other hand will bank of Vikram Pratap Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte, while their Dutch midfielder Yoell van Nieff will miss out because of suspension. ''For last four years, ISL battle is all about Mumbai and Mohun Bagan who are fighting for this Shield and Trophy. The recipe for our success has been to stay together and play together. When the season began, we were a group, now we have become a family and we have to play like one.'' Mohun Bagan have frequently struggled to maintain their lead and have conceded goals due to defensive lapses, a vulnerability that Mumbai City FC head coach Petr Kratky will surely be mindful of and seized the momentum. ''Players want to play in front of packed stadium, I think it will be an extra motivation to do well,'' he said. He further said losing the Shield was difficult. ''We knew what was at stake, it's always hard. We tried to regroup put ourselves together. A couple of training sessions the spirit was little down, but now we are good to continue.''

Rahul Gandhi Alleges Modi, BJP Seek to 'Destroy' Constitution

Rahul Gandhi Alleges Modi, BJP Seek to 'Destroy' Constitution Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP and RSS attack democracy continuously and want to ''destroy'' the country's Constitution. Gandhi, who cancelled his visit to Odishas Rayagada district to address an election rally at the last moment for filing nomination papers for Raebareli Lok Sabha seat, has sent a video message in which he attacked the Sangh Parivar and the prime minister. In the message, Gandhi said continuous attacks were made on democracy and the Constitution. The Congress party and INDIA bloc are trying to protect democracy and Constitution while Modi, BJP and RSS want to destroy it, Gandhi said. Whatever benefits the tribals, Dalits and backward communities have received, it was only because of the Constitution, he said. ''These people are trying to finish the book (Constitution) which has given you all these rights, he said adding that without the Constitution, there would be nothing. Therefore, the 2024 election is crucial since it is for protecting the Constitution, the former Congress president said. We are calling the tribals Adivasis while the BJP and RSS people use the term Vanvasi (forest dwellers) for them. But they intend to take away their rights on jal-jungle-jameen (water-forest-land),'' Gandhi said. Alleging that BJP leaders are insulting tribals, Gandhi said the Congress is protecting the rights of the tribals. ''The Congress will give the tribals their rights on forest, water and land,'' he said in the message. The BJP has appointed its own people in all public institutions, privatised PSUs and given benefits to 20-25 people who are billionaires, he claimed. Narendra Modi has waived the loans amounting to Rs 16 lakh crore of these rich people, which will be equivalent to MGNREGA wages of 24 years. The Congress party has decided to provide the same amount of money to the poor people of the country including Odisha's farmers, labourers, Dalits, tribals and OBCs, said the Congress leader. Gandhi said his party's government had waived the crop loan of farmers. If the Congress comes to power, Gandhi said one woman in each poor family would be provided with assistance of Rs 1 lakh per year, which means Rs 8,500 a month, till the family has not come out of BPL. ''We are going to bring it into the legal framework to ensure MSP for all crops. The paddy farmers of Odisha will get the benefits, he said. The salary of Anganwadi and Asha workers will be doubled while MGNREGA wage will be hiked to Rs 400 per day from Rs 250 per day, he said adding that the Congress government will also give 50 per cent reservation to women in government jobs. The Congress leader sought an apology from the people for cancelling his visit to Rayagada.

New Rape and Kidnapping Cases Filed Against JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna and HD Revanna in Sex Tapes Scandal

Bangalore : JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna and his father, former Karnataka minister HD Revanna, are facing rape and kidnapping charges in connection with the sex tapes scandal. These are the latest developments in the case involving the father-son duo. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Police filed a rape case against Prajwal Revanna under Section 376 of the IPC. The charges include Section 376(2)(N) (repeatedly committing rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 354A(1)(ii) (demanding sexual favors), 354(B) (assault or criminal force on a woman with the intent to disrobe her), 354(C) (uploading of nude or semi-nude pictures), and the IT Act. Prajwal Revanna, the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch HD Deve Gowda, has been named as the sole accused in the FIR, which was submitted to the magistrate's court by SIT officers on Thursday. Additionally, a kidnapping case has been filed against Prajwal Revanna by one Raju HD under Section 364A (kidnapping for ransom) and 365 (kidnapping with the intent to secretly or wrongfully confine a person) of the IPC. According to the complaint, Raju alleged that his mother was forcibly taken away on April 29, and videos of her being sexually harassed went viral on social media. Raju claimed that he and his mother had worked at the Revanna house and farmhouse for six years before quitting three years ago. Shortly before the Lok Sabha elections began, a person identified as Satish took Raju's mother to a different region. On the day of the election, Satish brought Raju's mother back home and instructed Raju and his mother to elope if the police came to their house. On April 29, Satish forcibly took Raju's mother, claiming that HD Revanna had ordered her to be brought to him, threatening that a case would be filed against Raju and he might go to jail if the police found him. On May 1, Raju learned from his friends that his mother's sexual assault video had gone viral. Later, his relatives informed him that his mother's legs could be seen tied in the video. On May 1, Raju called Satish to inquire about his mother's whereabouts, pleading with him to send her back home. However, Raju was allegedly intimidated, with Satish claiming that an FIR had been filed against his mother over a previous altercation involving HD Revanna, where she was seen holding a stick in a photo. I dont know where my mother was taken. I fear for her life. I request you to take action under the law and find my mother, Raju wrote in the complaint. Previously, a case had been registered against Prajwal Revanna and HD Revanna for sexual harassment, intimidation, stalking, and outraging the dignity of a woman based on a complaint by a woman who worked at their house. Prajwal Revanna, who is seeking re-election from the Hassan constituency in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, has been embroiled in controversy after multiple explicit videos purportedly of him were widely shared on social media. Prajwal Revanna, however, claims that the videos were morphed and has lodged a complaint through his polling agent. The SIT formed by the Karnataka government issued a global lookout notice against Prajwal Revanna at all immigration centers worldwide on Thursday. Prajwal Revanna fled the country soon after the sexual abuse allegations surfaced and was reported to have gone to Frankfurt, Germany, on April 26. Prajwal Revanna was supposed to appear before the SIT on Thursday, but he filed a plea with a sessions court in Bengaluru seeking anticipatory bail. However, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that Prajwal Revanna did not seek political clearance for his trip to Germany. The matter has become the latest flashpoint between the BJP and the Congress, considering that JD(S) is the NDA ally in Karnataka. During a rally in the southern state, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alleging that Prajwal Revanna mass-raped women and made sex videos. PM Modi Vows Justice for Victims of the West Bengal Teacher Recruitment Scam

Kolkata: During a public rally in Bolpur, West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the West Bengal teachers' recruitment scam and criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC), vowing to hold accountable those who jeopardized the future of the state's youth. He assured the people that justice would be served, stating, I will not spare those who have looted the people of Bengal; this is Modi's guarantee. Referring to the scam, PM Modi emphasized the need to punish those responsible for causing distress among the youth. He stated that over 25,000 teachers had been dismissed by the court due to the recruitment scam orchestrated by the TMC. The Prime Minister assured the youth of Bengal that those who had caused them distress would be punished and urged the BJP Bengal to establish a legal cell and a social media platform to assist the victims of the scam. PM Modi also accused the TMC and Congress of being solely concerned about their vote bank, rather than the welfare of the people. He criticized them for spreading rumors about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which, according to him, was meant to aid people who were left stranded after partition. Furthermore, PM Modi labeled the TMC government as undemocratic for controlling all institutions in the state. He highlighted the political violence in West Bengal and accused the TMC of harboring non-state actors who committed atrocities against the people. He expressed concern over the state of democracy in Bengal, stating, TMC is digging the grave of democracy! PM Modi also criticized the INDIA bloc, accusing them of corruption and scams during their governance. He highlighted various scams, including the 2G scam, submarine and helicopter scams, and Commonwealth scam, alleging that the TMC was following a similar path. He emphasized the need for change and questioned the ability of the INDI alliance to think about the future. During the rally, PM Modi expressed gratitude to a young girl who presented him with a sketch. He asked his volunteers to obtain the sketch from her and requested her address so that he could write her a letter of thanks. The West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) teacher recruitment scam came to light following the arrest of Bengal BJP leader Partha Chatterjee, who served as the education minister in Mamata Banerjee's cabinet until his arrest on July 23, 2022. The polling for the remaining parliamentary seats in West Bengal will be held on May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, with the results announced on June 4. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the TMC won 34 seats in the state, while the BJP secured only 2 seats. Election Commission Acts on BJP's Complaint, Orders Transfer of Senior Odisha Bureaucrat

Bhuvneshwar: In response to a complaint filed by the BJP alleging misuse of public office, the Election Commission swiftly ordered the immediate transfer of senior Odisha bureaucrat Sujata R Kartikeyan. Kartikeyan, who is the wife of BJD leader V K Pandian and holds the position of commissioner-cum-secretary in the Department of Mission Shakti, Odisha, was directed to a non-public dealing department. The move came shortly after the BJP's petition to remove Kartikeyan from her post, citing her alleged involvement as an agent of the ruling BJD in the state. The complaint raised concerns about Kartikeyan's active participation in the elections, suggesting that her actions were influenced by her husband's association with the BJD. Expressing dismay over Kartikeyan's deviation from professionalism, the BJP emphasized the need to uphold the impartiality and integrity of the Election Commission. The party urged the Commission to relieve Kartikeyan from her duties in order to maintain the unbiased reputation of the electoral process in Odisha. The Election Commission's decision to transfer Kartikeyan reflects its commitment to ensuring fair and transparent elections in the state, free from any perceived biases or influences. Assam CM woos voters in Western Assam

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma speaking at a conclave in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar on Saturday. (Image: DC) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma speaking at a conclave in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar on Saturday. (Image: DC) Guwahati: Taking a U-turn from his anti-Muslim rhetoric, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that the Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), are engaged in false propaganda to deceive the electorate with lies. Stating that opposition was spreading fear among Muslims, Mr Sarma said that they spread lies previously that mosques would be shut down and religious practices like Namaz and Ramzan would be banned under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. Contrary to his rhetoric in past, Mr Sarma highlighted that the Modi administration has now completed a decade in power without any such prohibitions and noted a cessation of communal clashes during this period. It is significant that Mr Sarma on Thursday travelled to Dhubri Lok sabha seat to campaign for the ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) candidate, just a month after he declared that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not want to win the Dhubri seat and that he would never go there to seek votes. Mr Sarma described the Congress era as one marked by violence and disruption, characterised by Guns, Bullets, Bomb Blasts, picketing, and Assam Bandhs. He asserted that his government has eradicated these societal ills. Mr Sarma who addressed three public meetings at Gauripur, Bilasipara and Golakganj in Western Assam, said, I see a wave of enthusiasm among people in favour of AGP and BJP in parts of Dhubri where we didnt have any presence earlier. People have realised that Mr Ajmals (sitting MP Badruddin Ajmal) time in Dhubri is over, and they dont need Rakibul (Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain). The Dhubri Lok Sabha seat has been an AIUDF bastion since the 2009 general elections when Ajmal was first elected as an MP. He has been re-elected from the seat three times since. Sarma had last year claimed that the BJP does not want votes from Miyas for the next 10 years till the community discards practices like child marriages, sends girls to schools and stays away from fundamentalism. In a direct attack on his political rivals, Mr Sarma claimed that Congress candidate Rakibul Hussain and AIUDF candidate Badruddin Ajmal were merely putting on a show for the people of Dhubri. He urged the residents not to lag behind in the nation's progress and to actively participate in the development narrative being written by the NDA, which he confidently stated would form the next central government. AGP, a constituent of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance in Assam, is contesting from Dhubri, one of Assams three Muslim-majority Lok Sabha seats, and Barpeta as part of the alliance. The BJP is contesting in 11 out of 14 seats in Assam, while its ally AGP is contesting in two seats Barpeta and Dhubri. One seat has gone to United Peoples Party Liberal. Dhubri is scheduled to vote in the third phase of the ongoing general elections on May 7.

Swell Surge Warning to Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Hyderabad: Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) on Friday that there was a possibility of swell surges and rough sea conditions associated with the effect of high period swell waves that are approaching from distant southern Indian Ocean. Swell surges started at approximately 10,000 km away from Indian coast on April 26, 2024 in the southern Atlantic Ocean (15E and 60S) and slowly moved towards southern Indian Ocean (~35-55E; 60-50S) around April 28 2024. This caused the high energy swell propagation (~24 s) towards the Indian coastal regions which is expected to hit southern tip of India in the early hours 2.30 a.m. of May 4, 2024. These long period swells combined with high tide conditions can cause coastal flooding in the low-lying areas of Lakshadweep, Kerala, South Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Odisha and West Bengal coasts during May 4 and 5, 2024. The low-lying coastal areas are particularly vulnerable. The INCOIS is presently monitoring the situation and the updates will appear on its website. The public is advised to check INCOIS website at www.incois.gov.in/portal/osf/osf.jsp for further information and updates on the event. Fishermen and coastal population are alerted to be cautious on possible surging of waves (gushing of sea water) intermittently in the nearshore or beach region, particularly in the low-lying areas. Small vessels not to ply nearshore. Boats may be anchored at a fair distance from each other, to avoid collision and damage. Total suspension of operational/recreational activities at beach/nearshore regions during 4-5, May 2024 INCOIS is continuously engaged in providing ocean information, warnings, advisories, and ocean state forecasts to various stake holders. INCOIS, as part of Ocean State Forecast (OSF) Services, forecasts wave height, direction and period (of both wind waves and swell waves), Sea surface currents, Sea Surface Temperature, etc. INCOIS also provides forecasts on the state of the ocean during extreme weather conditions like cyclones, high wave/swell conditions, etc. based on multi-model operational forecasting system built upon numerical ocean models assimilated with real time data from buoys deployed in the coastal waters as well as in the open ocean, even deep south in the southern Indian Ocean.

Demand for Air conditioners soar as temperatures continue to rise, some companies raise prices by 3-5 per cent

Demand for Air conditioners soar as temperatures continue to rise, some companies raise prices by 3-5 per cent The demand for air conditioners (ACs) have surged during the April month due to the increase in temperature, especially in North and Central India. It has prompted a strong outlook for AC demand until mid-June 2024. According to a report by Anand Rathi Financial Services Limited, after the surge in demand for AC's the manufacturing companies have increased prices. The AC manufacturing company Blue Star has increased prices by 3-5 per cent across various models. The report highlights that in South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, AC volumes soared by 40-50 per cent year-on-year (y/y). While Karnataka and Telangana witnessed a 15-20 per cent y/y growth in AC volumes. In Central India, including Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Madhya Pradesh (MP), AC volumes grew by 15-20 per cent y/y. However, the local dealers have reported shortages of the ACs across brands, leading to increased delivery times. In North India, particularly in Rajasthan and Haryana, AC demand has surged post-Holi, with volumes growing by 20-25 per cent in April 2024. The report highlights that some dealers anticipated further growth in AC demand by 25-30 per cent in May. In the Eastern region, Odisha saw a 25-30 per cent increase in AC volumes, while Jharkhand experienced a 10-15 per cent y/y growth. Despite rising demand, no pricing action was observed by any brand in the region, and dealers are facing a shortage in giving timely supply. BJD being run by bureaucrats, outsiders in CM's office trying to capture Odisha: Pradhan

SAMBALPUR: Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal is facing public revolt for the first time and a caucus of outsiders in the chief minister's office wants to capture the state, BJP leader and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has claimed. The Education Minister, who is contesting the Lok Sabha polls from Sambalpur, also dismissed the speculation that there were any attempts from BJP to enter into an alliance with the BJD. In an interview with PTI, Pradhan, who is returning to the electoral fray after 15 years, said, he Odia identity is under threat and this election is all about that identity. BJD is being run by a group of bureaucrats...the caucus in the chief minister's office which has few non-Oriya officers, they all came together and thought let's exploit the inability of the chief minister, let's create a vacuum from back door and their intention is to capture the state. This is a very dangerous trend and this is what public is angry about besides their inaction on the ground, Pradhan said in a veiled jibe at Patnaik's close aide VK Pandian. The minister said this is the first time the so far popular CM is facing the heat from the public. BJD is facing public revolt for the first time...we have been fighting with them for long, we fought elections together too in the past. But 2024 election is a new type of election for them ..it is the most difficult election they would be facing, he said. The Assembly and general elections are being held in Odisha simultaneously. Naveen Patnaik will become the longest serving chief minister of India if his party wins the upcoming Assembly polls. He is already the longest serving CM of Odisha. Pradhan, however, said Patnaik's more than two-decade rule has brought little to the people of the state in way of solid development. Since last 24 years, Patnaik has been the in-charge of the state as chief minister but on all the fronts, be it social structure, infrastructure, economy, employment generation this government has been an utter failure. The lack of basic facilities causing large scale migration from the state. They do not have any vision or political will power they do not have any commitment to society, there is a huge anger among youth, women, tribals, different sections of society.. this is going to reflect in voting behaviour, people will teach them a lesson, there will be befitting response, he said. When he was asked about how the BJD was able to secure a mandate for five consecutive terms if there are so many issues, Pradhan said, kabhi to sabr ka bandh tutata hai (the patience crosses its limit at one point). 2024 election will be a real test of his popularity...soon BJD will not be seen in the state even by using binoculars. Pradhan, 54, also denied any talks of an alliance between BJP and BJD ahead of elections. There was no 'buzz' for alliance from our side...we had no compulsions for an alliance with them...on several national issues various parties have supported us but it is not mandatory that we will fight elections with them together, he said. Asked whether he would be the BJP's CM face if the party comes to power in Odisha, Pradhan said, here has been no decision yet and it will be decided by the party later only about who will be given the responsibility but I am confident that the Chief Minister will be from BJP. The BJP leader filed his nomination from Sambalpur on Thursday. Polling in the state is scheduled in the sixth phase of the general election on May 25. The high-profile Sambalpur constituency, which is the epicentre of western Odisha, is gearing up for a heated contest between Congress's Nagendra Pradhan, Dharmendra Pradhan, and BJD's Pranab Prakash Das. Nagendra Pradhan had won the constituency on a Biju Janata Dal ticket in 2014 polls. Dharmendra Pradhan is contesting an election after a gap of 15 years. He had last contested an election in 2009 after the end of BJP-BJD alliance. He lost the assembly poll that year. He was elected to the Odisha Assembly in 2000 and to the Lok Sabha from Deogarh seat in 2004. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar in 2012 and again in 2018 from Madhya Pradesh. Asked about the opposition's allegations that BJP will change the Constitution if voted to power, Pradhan said, Congress is scared...their leadership has been re-launched and repackaged several times and they have faced defeat only. They are making all attempts now like using deepfake videos, misutilising AI, making such statements but public knows their deeds and Congress existence is in danger.

Congress tally to be all-time low in LS polls; Rahul fighting from Rae Bareli sensing Wayanad defeat: PM Modi

BARDHAMAN: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday asserted that Congress' tally in the Lok Sabha polls will be an all-time low, as he mocked its leader Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli seat, sensing defeat at Wayanad where he is a sitting MP. Addressing a rally in the Bardhaman-Durgapur Lok Sabha seat, Modi said that if Congress is voted to power, it would snatch quotas meant for the Scheduled Caste, Dalits and OBCs and give those to its jihadi vote bank to pursue the party's appeasement politics. Rahul to contest LS polls from Rae Bareli, KL Sharma from Amethi Modi also slammed the opposition bloc INDIA and Congress for supporting the vote jihad comments made by a candidate of the Samajwadi Party (SP), an ally of the grand old party in Uttar Pradesh. There is no need for opinion polls or exit polls, as I had talked about their (Congress) defeat long back in Parliament. When their senior leader quit her Lok Sabha seat and entered Parliament through Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, it was evident that they sensed defeat, Modi said, in an apparent dig at Sonia Gandhi. Now, the shehzada' of Congress, who went to Wayanad (Kerala) after losing the Amethi seat, is also contesting from Rae Bareli. He knows he would lose Wayanad this time, Modi said, referring to Rahul Gandhi's decision to contest from Rae Bareli. The prime minister challenged the Congress to give in writing that it will not amend the Constitution to provide reservations based on religion. They (Congress and INDIA bloc) have to give a written statement that they will not take away the reservations for SCs, STs and OBCs and give those to their vote bank on the basis of religion, Modi said. He also came down heavily on the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal, alleging that the party has made Hindus second-class citizens in the state. Sea of crowd turns up for Dharmendra Pradhans nomination

SAMBALPUR: Amidst a sea of cheering supporters, Union Minister and BJPs candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat Dharmendra Pradhan embarked on a massive roadshow to file his nomination papers here on Thursday. Pradhans convoy, adorned with party banners and saffron flags, was surrounded by thousands of enthusiastic locals and party workers who shouted slogans like Abki bar, 400 par and Ethara darkar BJP sarkar. As thousands of people rallied in support of the union minister, it was evident that Pradhan through his rigorous and proactive campaigning in the last few months, had managed to find a place in the heart of voters, earning him a formidable reputation of being a dynamic and effective leader. Before the roadshow, Pradhan visited the Hanuman temple at Green Park and also offered prayers to Goddess Samaleswari. Accompanied by BJP candidates from Sambalpur and Rengali Assembly seats Jay Narayan Mishra and Nauri Naik, he led the huge rally from Samaleswari temple as local artistes performed in the front. The rally showcased the art, culture and tradition of Sambalpur. The procession traversed through Ramjigudi, Balibandha, Kunjelpada, Jharduapada, Nandpada, Daleipada and Municipality chowk before reaching the district collectors office. After reaching the collectorate, Pradhan submitted his nomination papers to the returning officer in presence of four proposers. Addressing the crowd after his nomination, Pradhan said, With the blessings of Lord Jagannath and Maa Samaleswari, I feel fortunate to have been able to file my nomination as the BJP candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat. The participation of such a massive number of people in the roadshow has boosted my confidence. He said considering the current political atmosphere in Odisha, this roadshow has shown the signs of change. During the 24 years of BJDs rule, people have been deprived of basic facilities. There is public outrage against the local government over issues like drinking water, education, health and employment. Narendra Modi will be the prime minister of the country for the third time. There will be an alternate government in Odisha which will bring change, and protect the identity of Odia people. With Maa Samaleis blessings, the BJP will win more than 400 seats in the country and form the government in Odisha this time, he said. Entire Odisha is my family and Sambalpur is my home. I am a candidate from Sambalpur and I will share its happiness and sorrow. I will always be at the forefront to serve Odisha and Sambalpur, Pradhan added.

Odisha: EC orders transfer of Sujata Karthikeyan

NEW DELHI/BHUBANESWAR: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday ordered the transfer of commissioner-cum-secretary of Mission Shakti department Sujata Karthikeyan to a non-public dealing department with immediate effect. Sujata is the wife of 5T chairman and BJD leader VK Pandian. Sources in the ECI confirmed The New Indian Express that the action was taken following a complaint by the BJP regarding alleged misuse of public office and authority by the officer. Earlier in the day, the BJP had moved the poll panel accusing Sujata of misusing her position to influence voters through Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme for electoral gains of BJD. In its complaint, the BJP alleged the Mission Shakti department was being misused by the ruling dispensation to influence voters to vote for BJD in the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. As part of its charter of duty, the department promotes various women self help groups (SHGs) and provides gainful activities to its members by providing credit, market linkage and other financial benefits with a budget running into thousands of crores. The functionaries of the department have been compelling and coercing these SHGs with the threat of stopping the government financial benefits, thus making them propagate and influence the voters. This is a brazen violation of the model code of conduct under the garb of SVEEP for reaching out to a wider population with its messages of voter awareness and education, the complaint read. It would have been fair and proper for her to understand the implications of her being the wife of Pandian and she should have proceeded on leave and disassociated herself from the public dealing duty during the elections. However, she is actively participating in the elections as a front person of the BJD in a manner which has been unheard of earlier, the BJP complained. A delegation led by Union Minister Rajeev Chandershekhar, Rajya Sabha member Sudhanshu Trivedi and senior party leader Om Pathak met the poll panel demanding immediate action to ensure free, fair and transparent elections. Sujata could not be contacted for comment.

No compensation for railway trespassing deaths: Orissa High Court

CUTTACK: Dismissing a batch of petitions, the Orissa High Court has held that though the Railways implement safety measures and regulations to prevent accidents, individuals who trespass on railway tracks are ultimately responsible for their own safety. The batch of 19 petitions involved cases relating to deaths that occurred between 2012 and 2023 while crossing the railway track. The petitioners sought direction to the railway authorities to pay compensation against the unnatural death of their kin in a railway accident. The single judge bench of Justice SK Panigrahi on Tuesday said, the railway tracks are designed for the safe passage of trains and not intended for pedestrian use. The evidence presented indicated that the deceased individuals perished as a result of being struck by a train while traversing the railway tracks. While the petitioners did not contest this fact, their counsels failed to substantiate any claims regarding the negligence of the railway authorities. Instead, they relied solely on appeals for the courts sympathy, Justice Panigrahi observed. While this court extends its deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased, it is imperative to note that mere sympathy cannot serve as a basis for compensating the family in the absence of a compelling legal argument. Railways often emphasise the importance of safety around railway tracks, but it is true that trespassing on tracks is a significant safety concern, he stated. He further added that a majority of the deaths every year on the railway tracks occurs due to crossing the tracks, which is an illegal act. Trespassing on tracks poses serious risks, including the danger of being struck by trains or encountering other hazards associated with the railway environment. Therefore, individuals who choose to cross railway tracks unlawfully assume the risk of potential accidents and cannot blame the Railways for the consequences of their actions, he stated. Expressing concern over trespassing on railway tracks, Justice Panigrahi said in 2021, a total of 1,752 rail deaths took place of which 1,114 were due to line crossing, 277 due to falling off trains and 258 due to natural causes.

Odisha: Pranab Prakash Dass mom to fight from Korei as BJD candidate

BHUBANESWAR: Putting an end to speculations, BJD on Thursday announced Sandhyarani Das, mother of party organisational secretary Pranab Prakash Das, as its candidate from Korei Assembly seat in Jajpur district. Sandhyarani replaces Ashok Kumar Bal, the partys sitting MLA from the constituency. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the list of candidates for the last three Assembly seats including much-awaited Korei. The party has changed the candidate for Deogarh Assembly seat by replacing Arundhati Devi, wife of Sambalpur MP Nitesh Ganga Deb of BJP, with Romancha Ranjan Biswal who had contested the 2019 elections unsuccessfully. The chief minister also announced Sabitri Pradhan as the partys candidate from Khandapada Assembly seat overlooking the claim of former MLA Anubhav Patnaik. Similarly, BJD has given ticket to Sukanta Nayak from Nilgiri Assembly seat. Nayak has consecutively won from the seat in 2014 and 2019 on BJD and BJP tickets respectively. Nayak had resigned from the BJP and rejoined BJD recently. The candidature of Sandhyarani from Korei is being seen as a back-up plan for Das who is BJDs candidate from Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat where he is pitted against BJP heavyweight and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. If Das fails to win, he can always get himself elected from Korei. The seat in Jajpur district is a family stronghold of Das and represented by his father Ashok Das five times. BJDs Khandapada candidate Sabitri is the chairperson of Bhapur block. The regional party had to change its candidate from the seat as sitting MLA, Soumya Ranjan Patnaik was expelled from the party. Meanwhile, announcement of candidates from Khandapada and Nilgiri has sparked resentment. Former MLA Anubhav Patnaik, a strong contender for a ticket this time from the seat, has resigned in protest. He is set to file his nomination as an Independent candidate on Friday. In his resignation letter to the chief minister, the former MLA said his father Arun Patnaik was with Biju Patnaik since 1985 and mother Bijaylaxmi Patnaik, a two-time MLA from the seat had worked to strengthen the partys organisation in the constituency. Patnaik said he had worked to strengthen organisation in the constituency. Santosh Khatua, the BJD candidate from Nilgiri in the 2019 also resigned from the party after his claim for a ticket was ignored.

Addressing a large gathering during the nomination filing of BJPs Sundargarh LS candidate Jual Oram and three Assembly nominees here, Yadav said during his visit to Odisha in the last several days, he has felt the wind of change blow in favour of the saffron party. The BJP would win all the 21 LS seats and also form the next government in the state. I know for last 25 years, the state government looted the mineral resources of Odisha. If voted to power, the BJP government would ensure that people of Odisha get their rights, he said. Yadav further said under the Jal Jeevan Mission, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave Rs 10,000 crore to Odisha for provision of drinking water to all households. But the state government failed to use the funds. If BJP forms government in Odisha, all households would be get water. Besides, there is a need for expansion of irrigation coverage in the state. Odisha: BJP grapples with independent acts in Berhampur LS seat

BERHAMPUR: Election to the Berhampur Lok Sabha constituency barely a fortnight away, disgruntled aspirants could queer the pitch for BJP candidates in the Assembly segments but the saffron party is putting up a united face ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit. Denied tickets after entry of imports from other parties, some of the aspirants who worked for the party for years have now filed nominations as Independent posing a hurdle for the candidates. Siba Shankar Dash, a BJP rebel, has filed nomination for Berhampur segment as an Independent. Dash started his political career with the BJD and became the first mayor of Berhampur Municipal Corporation. However, after the BJD denied a ticket to him in the general election in 2014, he switched to the BJP and contested unsuccessfully. He was an aspirant in 2019 too but the saffron party did not nominate him. Dash fought the election as an Independent again. Charged in several criminal cases, he spent some time in jail and was released on bail last year. Since then, he involved himself in BJPs activities hoping to get the party ticket but in vain. Dejected, Dash is now contesting as an Independent candidate. Since he enjoys a good following, the BJP tried to persuade him against fighting as an Independent but without any result. Apart from Dash, Kanhu Charan Pati was a strong contender for the BJP ticket too but the party selected K Anil Kumar who joined after resigning from the BJD. Not only Berhampur, the BJP faces similar crisis at Digapahandi, Aska, Kabisuryanagar, Polsara, Sorada and Chhatrapur. Faced with dissidence, the party has become proactive and is trying to present a united front. Except for Dash of Berhampur, the dejected aspirants in other segments are now seen campaigning for the party candidates. It is a good sign that the party workers have adopted a united stance after the visit of JP Nadda and before the visit of PM Narendra Modi to Berhampur, said a party leader. The PM is scheduled to address a meeting in Berhampur on May 6. The differences have been put behind in the interest of the party and BJP leaders are trying to make the meeting a grand success, said Dr Subash Sahu, Ganjam district unit president of BJP.

BJD faces tough contest against BJPs Kulesika in Laxmipur Assembly seat

JEYPORE: The Laxmipur Assembly constituency appears poised for a fierce electoral battle, with the ruling Biju Janata Dal facing a challenge from former MLA and current BJP candidate, Kailash Kulesika. Kulesikas growing influence in the constituency has sent ripples of concern through the BJD camp. In the 2019 elections, Kulesika, then representing the Congress, secured 44,982 (33.85 pc) votes, narrowly losing to BJDs Prabhu Jani who got 45,211 (34.02 pc) votes. Despite financial constraints and a strong BJD presence in the state, Kulesikas organisational groundwork in Congress party strengthened his support base, particularly in the ST constituency. Seeking a brighter political future, Kulesika switched allegiance to the BJD in 2022, lured by the promise of a ticket for the 2024 elections. However, last-minute exclusion from the candidate list prompted his defection to the BJP, a move that has altered the electoral equations in the region. Kulesikas grassroots networks, particularly in Bandhugaon, Narayanpatana, Dasmantpur, and Laxmipur blocks, coupled with his experience and organisational prowess, have made him a strong candidate of the BJP. Moreover, there is palpable discontent among BJD supporters over the partys decision to overlook Kulesika, making it challenging for Prabhu Jani to secure their backing. The magnitude of Kulesikas influence was evident during his nomination filing roadshow in Koraput, where over 10,000 supporters from distant areas rallied in solidarity with the BJP candidate. Political analysts believe that countering Kulesikas momentum will be no easy task for the BJD, especially given his insider knowledge of the partys strategies for the constituency. BJD supporters, however, remain optimistic, citing the scheduled visit of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik to Rayagada on May 4 as a potential game-changer. They believe that the CMs presence will help mitigate Kulesikas influence and bolster support for Prabhu Janis candidacy.

Odisha: Will make paddy purchase clean & transparent says Manmohan Samal

BHUBANESWAR: Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal on Thursday alleged irregularities of over Rs 1 lakh crore in paddy procurement in the state and assured transparency will be restored if his party came to power. Describing the BJD government in the state as anti-farmer, Samal said if BJP comes to power, all paddy grown by farmers will be procured. Asserting the BJP government will be farmer-friendly, Samal said the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy will be fixed at Rs 3,100 per quintal. There will be no delay in payment to farmers and they will get their money in their bank accounts in 48 hours, he said adding, there will be no katni and chhatni (reduction in weight of paddy per bag for payment). Alleging the state government has neglected the agriculture sector, Samal said Potato Mission and Onion Mission started by BJD has failed to yield any result. Samal said though the Centre asked the state government to provide financial assistance to 75 lakh farmers, only 44 lakh were given assistance under KALIA scheme. The state BJP president said because of the neglect of the government, all food procurement units are now closed. The state government has not taken any correctives measures though these issues have been flagged by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) several times, he added. Stating Odisha witnessed a leadership crisis during BJD rule, Samal alleged while around 80 per cent people in the state depend on agriculture, the state government has failed to address the issues faced by the farmers. As a result, lakhs of youths are forced to move to other states as migrant workers, he added. Claiming the ruling BJD has done nothing to strengthen irrigation, he said farmers are facing problems as the state government failed to utilise funds provided by the Centre to boost irrigation. The Naveen Patnaik government also failed to set up cold storage and build seven barrages on Mahanadi river as it had promised. Meanwhile, dismissing the allegations as false and baseless, BJD Rajya Sabha member Sasmit Patra alleged the saffron party is shedding crocodile tears over farmers issues. Whenever there are elections, BJP leaders talk about such things and then forget, he added. Accusing BJP of doing nothing to mitigate the plight of farmers, he said the Odisha Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution way back in 2017 for raising the MSP for paddy to Rs 2,930 per quintal. However, BJP leaders and the Centre failed to take any step in this regard in all these years as they are not worried about the problems faced by farmers, he added.

Dr PC Mahapatra is BJPs pick for Cuttack-Barabati assembly seat

BHUBANESWAR: The BJP on Thursday announced six candidates for Assembly seats in Odisha fielding its state unit vice president Dr Purna Chandra Mahapatra in Barabati-Cuttack segment, Shambhunath Rout in Ghasipura, Ashish Patra in Bhograi, Sudhanshu Nayak in Bhandaripokhari, Umesh Chandra Jena in Bari and Prakash Chandra Ranabijuli in Begunia. A renowned gynaecologist, Dr Mahapatra was in contention for Cuttack Lok Sabha seat. He was nominated from Barabati-Cuttack segment after the party fielded six-time MP Bhartruhari Mahtab, who defected from BJD. The former head of the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at the states premier SCB Medical College and Hospital left many surprised when he was chosen to one of the top posts of the party last year despite not being a primary member then. Kendrapara MP and actor-turned-politician Anubhav Mohanty, who had resigned from BJD, was also in the race for the seat. BJPs Ghasipura candidate Shambhunath is a surprise pick as speculation was rife about Khandapada MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik, who has been expelled from BJD, contesting from the seat after he hinted on similar lines during his visit to Maa Tarini temple at Ghatagaon on Tuesday. Known for his association with VHP and RSS, Shambhunath, had retired from state government job a few years back. The party has nominated Patra, the former block president of Congress, as the candidate from Bhograi. The three-time sarpanch and a director of Balasore-Bhadrak Central Cooperative Bank, he had resigned from Congress a week back and joined BJP on Wednesday. BJP sprang a surprise in Bhandaripokhari by nominating former BJD leader Sudhanshu, the husband of two-time chairperson of Bonth block. He had switched to saffron camp last year. However, Prakash, a close aide of sitting Bhubaneswar MP and BJP candidate Aparajita Sarangi has been named as the BJP candidate from the Begunia Assembly segment. It was being speculated that Begunia could be offered to veteran Prasanna Patasani if he switches to BJP from BJD. Similarly, Umesh, who had contested from Bari on Congress ticket in 2019, has been chosen over former minister Debasis Nayak, who had quit BJD and joined BJP in February. The party was also reportedly waiting for sitting MLA Sunanda Das to switch allegiance after she was denied a ticket by BJD this time.
