Cricket World Cup is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world. Over the years, the tournament has gotten even bigger and better. The world of online cricket betting in India has now started focusing on the upcoming World Cup.

While it was West Indies who started the tournament with a win in 1975 and 1979, it would be Australia who dominated the tournament’s history with five wins–1987, 1999, 2003,  2007 & 2015.

Without any further ado, let’s get started.

Brief History of the ODI World Cup

The first edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup took place in 1975. Back then it was known as the Prudential World Cup.

  • Interestingly, the tournament had 60 overs to play each match.
  • Later as the tournament moved to Asia, where the daylight was short as compared to England, the overs were reduced to 50 overs per side.
  • Meanwhile, back in 1975, it was only the Test-playing nations that got entry to the tournament.
  • When the tournament was first floated, it was only England who had the resources to host a tournament of such a magnitude.
  • England hosted the tournament on two more occasions—1979 and 1983 after which it was the association of Asian nations like India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka who pitched in.
  • Four years later, in 1987, for the first time, this tournament was played outside England.
  • As of now, every nation gets the hosting rights of the biggest ODI tournament in the world on a rotational basis.
  • The format has also undergone a change over the years. Till 2011 every team had a direct qualification for the tournament. However, in 2015 only the full member nations got direct entry.

Meanwhile, from 2019 onwards, teams would have to play well throughout the season as the top eight teams in the ICC rankings got an entry. The last two teams would have to battle it out in the Qualifying tournaments to ensure a spot for the last two places.

ODI World Cup Winners’ List

The first two editions of the ODI World Cup were won by West Indies. Nevertheless, four years later it was India who won the trophy as West Indies again reached the final in England.

From here on the domination of West Indies in ODI World Cup started to fade away as other nations came into the fray. Australia won it in 1987 and this was followed by Pakistan in 1992.

In 1996, Arjuna Ranatunga-led Sri Lanka won the maiden trophy which was followed by another Aussie win in 1999. In the years to come, Australia would win the trophy two more times—in 2003 and 2007.

In 2011, It was India’s turn to win the trophy, but in 2015 it was Australia who won the trophy yet again. In 2019, hosts England beat New Zealand to win their maiden World Cup trophy.

By numbers, it is Australia who has won the trophy the most number of times—five.

The most successful team in the history of the World Cup

This credit goes to Australia as they have won the trophy as many as five times. Australia has been the most successful side in the history of the World Cup.

The Aussies have time and again proved that they are the best white-ball team, winning the trophy on five occasions, three times away from home.

On the other hand, India won it twice. Once in 1983 and when it was played at home in 2011.

In 2023, India will have a chance to repeat the fate of 2011 as we are bracing for another home World Cup.

Final Thoughts

Over the years, we have seen this tournament grown into one of the most competitive tournaments in the world so much so that every team wants to win the Cup at any cost.

While it was West Indies who started off winning the trophy in 1975, their dominance was shattered by India.

Later from 1999 onwards, Australia led the way winning the trophy on three occasions, and that too in many away World Cups.

With the 2023 World Cup happening in India, the game dynamics are bound to change. Can India win the trophy once again? Or it will be the first-timers like South Africa and New Zealand who will do it this time.
