With Deepali Das, daughter of Naba das, the baton has been passed in Odisha
Deepali Das is a chip off the old block. The 26-year-old always had the chutzpa her late father Naba Kishore Das displayed. SAMBALPUR: Deepali Das is a chip off the old block. The 26-year-old always had the chutzpa her late father Naba Kishore Das displayed. When Biju Janata Dal supremo and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced her as partys candidate for Jharsuguda bypoll on Friday, it only seemed natural progression for the management graduate. On January 29, when Das senior fell to the bullets of an ASI at Brajarajnagar, Deepali was in Europe. The family was shattered. A grief-stricken Deepali returned and quietly shouldered the responsibility. She spoke about her fathers loss, love and affection the electorate heaped on the three-time legislator as well as how BJD boss stood with them like a father figure during the hour of personal tragedy. With her nomination, the baton has been passed on. Naba Das who was elected as Jharsuguda MLA on a Congress ticket twice in 2009 and 2014 had switched to BJD in 2018 and continued his winning streak in 2019. Deepali first came to limelight when she joined her father in government and private meetings after the 2019 elections. She started working at the grassroots level in Jharsuguda under Narsingh Bishnupriya Charitable Trust and quickly endeared herself with her work during the Covid crisis. Eventually, Deepali was seen as the representative of minister in her constituency. Born in 1997, Deepali Das studied at DAV Public School, Burla before moving to Rajasthan where she completed Plus Two from Mody School in Lakshmangarh. She then went on to get her BCom from KC College, Mumbai, and then pursued MBA in Public Relations and Communication from EU Business School at Barcelona, Spain. Months before Naba Das death, Deepali was seen actively campaigning during Padampur by-elections in November last for BJD candidate Barsha Singh Bariha. Barsha too had lost her father Bijay Ranjan Singh Bairha and was picked by BJD to take up the mantle. After the death of the minister, people of Jharsuguda expected Deepali would be chosen to step into her fathers shoes. She was seen at various social functions during the last month. It is a very big day for my entire family and my father would have been happy if he were here. I am indebted to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for having shown faith in me. I feel proud to be selected by the BJD, she told mediapersons after the formal announcement by the ruling party. Deepali said her only objective will be to work for development of Jharsuguda. Being a woman, she said, working towards empowerment of woman in the constituency and bringing them to the mainstream will be her priority. Her fathers memory was right up there. My constant focus will be to keep my father alive in the minds of the people of Jharsuguda by following in his path.

Taking to Twitter, Pradhan said, Lawless Odisha is a reality. High-time people in power recognise the fault-lines in the law and order situation in the state. BHUBANESWAR: UnionMinister Dharmendra Pradhan once again targeted the state government over the law and order situation following the abduction and murder of a teenager in Jharsuguda district for ransom. Pradhan, who is on a three-day visit to the state, expressed concern over the murder of 15-year-old Samarth Agarwal, son of a businessman, within two months of the daylight killing of minister Naba Kishore Das. Taking to Twitter, Pradhan said, Lawless Odisha is a reality. High-time people in power recognise the fault-lines in the law and order situation in the state. Murder of young Samarth exactly within two months of the broad daylight killing of Minister Naba Das exposes Odisha govts tall claims on rule of law, he also said. The minister said that no one is safe, neither the public nor the public representatives of the state. Such gruesome incidents, particularly in Jharsuguda, has shocked everyone and weakens their trust on the state government and its law and order machinery. No amount of empathy will bring solace to young Samarths family. The Odisha government must pull up its socks to ensure rule of law and safety of citizens, Pradhan tweeted. Earlier, Pradhan had launched an attack on the state government for its failure to protect one of its minister who was shot dead by a police officer on duty on January 29 in Brajarajnagar. He had also been rasing the Mahanga double murder case, Anand Toppo murder case and the alleged sexual harassment case against a BJD MLA. A war of words broke out with BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sasmit Patra accusing Pradhan of tarnishing the image of the state for petty political gain and explaining the minister the difference between lawlessness and law and order situation. In a series of tweets, the BJD MP said lawlessness is when during a GST raid at Padampur hundreds of BJP leaders and workers storm in forcibly and snath papers from the raiding party in a bid to help the businessman who had cheated in paying tax. It is law and order situation when 500 people block national highway between Sambalpur and Cuttack due to central neglect and delay in completion of work for many years or thousands of farmers protest against central neglect for not lifting surplus paddy. The BJD leader said crime is committed by a group or individual which is investigated and the guilty are brought to justice. He alleged that BJP-ruled states like UP, MP, Maharashtra, Assam and Haryana have reported more rape cases and some of them have reported more murder cases as per the NCRB report of 2021 and requested Pradhan not to mislead the people of the state and do politics on sensitive matters of crime.
