BJP releases chargesheet against BJD govt, says Naveen Patnaik government has cheated people

BHUBANESWAR: A day ahead of the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Odisha, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released a political chargesheet against the state government titled 25 years of misrule of Biju Janata Dal (BJD). Releasing the chargesheet, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav said the ruling dispensation has not only looted the bountiful mineral resources of Odisha but cheated the people by depriving them from the welfare schemes of Narendra Modi goverment. Launching a scathing attack on the Naveen Patnaik government, Yadav said the regional party has not kept a single promise it had given to the people. The BJD government had promised to create irrigation potential for at least 35 per cent of the cultivable land in each block with cold storage facility. While area covered under irrigation is diminishing, farmers suffered huge loss due to lack of cold stores, he said. The KALIA scheme launched by the BJD to supplement the famers is now floundering as only 44 lakh famers are getting financial assistance as against 75 lakh farmers as promised. The income of Odisha farmers is one of the lowest in the country because of the anti-farmers policy of the state government, he said. Union Minister Bhupender Yadav highlighted that the significant vacancy in various state government departments has led to rising unemployment and mass migration of youth from Odisha to other parts of the country in search of jobs. Media reports indicate that over 40,000 laborers from Odisha migrated to other states last year alone. The unemployment rate, which was 3.8% in 2015-16, has increased to 6.2% in 2019-20. The Union Minister also said that the health and education system has crumbled due large scale vacancy of doctors and teachers.Quoting government reports, he said more than 4,300 posts of teachers in higher education is lying vacant while about 8,000 schools have been closed from 2015 to 2021. He described the BJD government as a government of scams, citing the Justice M B Shah Commission's exposure of a mining scam amounting to Rs 60,000 crore. Now the government has committed another fraud on the people of the state by supplying cheaper thermal power from the state to Tamil Nadu while charging higher power tariff to the consumers of the state, he added. Yadav attacked the government for its inefficiency in meeting the need of the people for safe drinking water despite huge assistance from the Central government. The state has miserably failed to cover all households with tap water despite receiving central assistance of Rs 15,000 crore. Expressing concern over rising crime and increasing atrocities against women, the Union Minister said now Odisha has the dubious distinction of a state having highest rate of crimes. We will go to the people with this report card of the BJD government and the good governance and Modi's Guarantee before the election. We are confident that the people will bless us to form a double engine government in the state, Yadav said. State BJP president Manmohan Samal and Opposition Chief whip Mohan Majhi also spoke about BJD misgovernance and the party's determination to oust this government.

BJD, BJP in lungi war over Naveen campaign video

BHUBANESWAR: An Instagram video featuring Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in a traditional lungi and seeking votes for the BJD has triggered a war of words between the regional party and the BJP ahead of the elections in Odisha. The video of Naveen clad in a lungi, seen holding two conch symbols in both hands and appealing for double votes for the BJD - one for the MP and the other for the MLA candidate - went viral on social media platforms on Monday. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Naveen Patnaik (@naveen_odisha) Responding to the jodi sankha (double conches) campaign of the BJD, Union Minister for Education, Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Dharmendra Pradhan was seen taking potshots at the ruling party, saying the conch is cracked and cannot be blown. You all must have viewed the video in which Naveen Babu is seen wearing a lungi and holding two conches. He is an elderly person and we all respect him but what all he is being made to do! Pradhan was seen asking at a campaign meeting in Sambalpur constituency on Tuesday. This drew the wrath of the BJD which took the fight to another level by questioning Pradhans intention to ridicule the attire which it said was a Sambalpuri weave. Party leaders said the union minister is envious of the chief ministers growing popularity and having sleepless nights after the jodi sankha campaign struck an emotional chord with the people of the state with four million views in 24 hours. BJD national spokesperson Sasmit Patra said Pradhan has lost his mind in frustration. He has insulted the tradition and culture of Odisha by criticising the Sambalpuri lungi worn by the CM. Lakhs of weavers who are involved in lungi trade and lakhs of people who wear it feel insulted by the union minister, he said. Spokesperson Swayam Prakash Mahapatra said Pradhan has hurt the sentiment of weavers and ridiculed their hard work. As a retort to Pradhan, the two BJD spokespersons appeared in lungis at a press meet at Sankha Bhawan. Pradhan has forgotten the tradition and culture of the state and contribution of weavers as he was out of Odisha for many years and spent a lot of time in UP, Bihar and MP. The BJP countered the BJD narrative stating leaders of the party feel demoralised whenever the pride of Odisha and Odias is discussed. It is only during the tenure of Naveen Patnaik, lakhs of weavers lost livelihood following the closure of state-run textile, spinning and ginning mills. They have now decided to respond through votes against the conspiracy hatched by the BJD government to demolish the livelihood of the weavers and their tradition, BJP spokesperson Anil Biswal said.

Naveen to launch campaign from Hinjili today, urges people to vote for Jodi Sankha

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will formally kick off the poll campaign from his home constituency Hinjili in Ganjam district on Wednesday. Naveen has been elected from the constituency for five consecutive times since 2000. A day before embarking on his campaign trail, the chief minister urged the people to vote for Jodi Sankha (double conch) in the ensuing elections in the state. The term doube conch has been coined to counter double-engine government slogan of the BJP. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Naveen Patnaik (@naveen_odisha) The chief ministers campaign has assumed significance this time as the party will be trying to neutralise the anti-incumbency factor against the BJD candidates due to the party being in power for such a long period. Besides, the party is trying to check a possible chance of split voting because of a general surge of BJP driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modis popularity among the electorate. In a video released by the BJD, the chief minister was seen holding two conches, the party symbol in both the hands, appealing people to vote for double conch in the elections. This time, vote for double conch - one for MLA and one for MP, he said. The chief minister will hit the campaign trail a day before Union Home minister Amit Shahs proposed rally at Sonepur under Balangir Lok Sabha seat. He will address two public meetings - one at Hinjili and the second at Sheragada. He is scheduled to campaign for BJD candidates in Rayagada district on Thursday. Sources in the BJD said that 5T chairman VK Pandian will accompany him during the campaign. The chief minister is contesting from two Assembly seats - Hinliji and Kantabanji in Balangir district. Simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections will be held in Odisha in four phases from May 13 to June 1. Simarani Nayak joins BJP, says BJD selling party ticket

BHUBANESWAR: A day after quitting the ruling BJD for being denied renomination for the upcoming Assembly election, Hindol MLA Simarani Nayak joined the BJP here on Tuesday. After joining the saffron party along with her supporters at the state BJP headquarters here in the presence of state president Manmohan Samal, Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, Dhenkanal Lok Sabha nominee Rudra Narayan Pani and other leaders, Nayak said, I worked hard for the party (BJD) in the last 10 years as a legislator and have undertaken many development works in the constituency. My hard work was not taken into consideration as the partys preference of candidate selection was money. Since my constituency has no industry or mines, I could not afford to buy by a BJD ticket. Nayak said she was greatly influenced by all the initiatives taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to empower the women. I will strive to take development programmes of Modi to all villages in my constituency, she said. Later talking to reporters, Nayak said that the BJD had done her injustice. She said she has been doing politics from the grassroots for a long time before being elected to the Assembly. Now, the BJP has given me the opportunity to work for the people and I will carry out whatever responsibility is given to me, she said. Nayak is aspiring for a party ticket from Hindol, which she has been representing from 2014. The BJP has not named any candidate for the seat. The party had given ticket to Ashok Kumar Nayak, who significantly improved the vote share from 20 per cent to over 40 per cent in 2019. He is the main contender for the party ticket this time. Welcoming Simarani into BJP, Samal said large number of BJD leaders and workers are joining the saffron party after realising that the ruling party is going to be rejected by the people in the elections.

BJD and BJP trade charge on deferred Dubai visit of women self-help groups: Sulata Deo

BHUBANESWAR: The BJD and BJP traded charges against each other over postponement of a proposed visit of members of women's self-help groups (SHGs) to Dubai ahead of the ensuing elections. While BJD leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo blamed Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for postponement of the visit by the SHGs, the BJP accused the ruling party of questioning the decision of the Election Commission of India (ECI). Deo told mediapersons here that a group of SHG members was to proceed on a visit to Dubai as part of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaiks vision for empowerment of women to give them global exposure. However, the move was scuttled as the union minister moved a petition before the ECI on March 27 following which the proposed visit was deferred, she added. Criticising the union minister and BJP for working against the interest of women, Deo said several women from Sambalpur, from where the union minister is seeking election to Lok Sabha, were also slated to visit Dubai as part of the programme. She alleged that the union minister is putting hurdles in the way of empowering and skilling women in the state because of intolerance and said the people of Odisha will give a fitting reply to him in the upcoming polls. Refuting the allegations as false and misleading, BJP state secretary Kasturi Mishra said the BJD MP made baseless claims by suppressing facts. The BJD leader should have stated that the proposed visit of SHG women was to be funded by OTDC. Stating that the move to send the SHG women to Dubai ahead of the elections was against the model code of conduct laid down by the ECI, the BJP leader said the ECI got the programme postponed after it learnt about it.

Odisha: Jayadev in for an intense fight as parties sweat to keep organisation strong

BHUBANESWAR: The Jayadev Assembly segment of Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha constituency is in for an intriguing electoral battle in the ensuing general elections. With all the major parties struggling to keep their organisational base in order, the Assembly seat that has been a stronghold of BJD for the last three terms, is witnessing an interesting yet strange political equation right ahead of the elections. After Arabinda Dhali, the sitting MLA of BJD having a track record of winning two terms defected to Opposition BJP and became the candidate of saffron party, the ruling party has reposed its faith in Independent Naba Kishore Mallick who had stood second in 2019. While Dhalis allegiance to BJP was a blow for the BJD, the saffron party is also said to be in disorder following death of partys senior leader Narendra Nath Nayak in 2022. If sources are to be believed, a faction of BJP leaders and workers in the seat are also unhappy with the decision of the party leadership to pick Dhali from the constituency. On the other hand, the Congress party has its own challenges and internal rifts to deal within the seat. The grand old party that had named Jayanta Kumar Bhoi as its nominee from the seat initially, threw a curveball by fielding Krishna Chandra Sagaria, the ex-MLA of Koraput, from the constituency. The partys plan to field a person from a distant district to sway voters of SC community, that constitute around 50 per cent of the electors, however, has not gone down well with many local leaders and supporters who have now started questioning the wisdom of selecting a candidate unfamiliar with local issues. Amidst this upheaval, Congress candidate Sagaria said people of the constituency will support him this time. The ex-MLA said that during his previous stint as a lawmaker and chairman of OPCCs Dalit cell, he had visited the constituency several times and is well aware of the problems faced by the locals, especially those belonging to the SC community as well as minorities. BJD leaders couldnt be reached, while BJP leaders also claimed that the saffron party which has improved its vote-share gradually in the seat will be favoured by the electors this time.

Odisha stares at decades longest heatwave run

BHUBANESWAR: The blistering hot condition in Odisha, if it continues its staggering run for a few more days, could turn out to be one of the longest spells of heatwave in the last one-and-half decade. On Tuesday, the heatwave conditions entered its ninth day and the prediction that the spell will drag further makes a strong case for the longest running heatwave in the state. Weather officials said April has already witnessed in excess of the average heatwave days recorded for the month caused by two spells, including the one prevailing at present. Between April 5 and 23, the state has recorded a total 11 heatwave days though the normal run lasts in the range of four to eight days. There was a drop in temperature in some places of the state on the day but heatwave conditions prevailed in coastal parts for ninth day in a row. There is prediction of heatwave conditions in parts of the state for another four days till April 27. If that continues, it would be one of the longest spells of heatwave in the state in last 10 to 15 years, Umashankar Das, scientist with the India Meteorological department (IMD), Odisha informed. Though there was a mild drop in the temperature levels in parts of the state on Tuesday, severe heatwave prevailed in Jagatsinghpur districts, while heatwave was felt in Nayagarh, Gajapati and Ganjam disticts. Data for the period 1961-2020 reveals that on an average, more than two heatwave events occur over northern India and coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha during March-June. In some pockets, the frequency exceeds four in a season. Most of IMD stations have shown an increasing trend of heatwave events during the 60-year period, an IMD document revealed. Analysis of spatial distribution shows heatwaves last for four to eight days on an average. However, in some areas of central and north-western India and parts of Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh, the duration is more than eight days. The IMD earlier had warned of longer and harsher heatwave spells during summer this year, primarily due to prevailing El Nio conditions. Meanwhile, Paralakhemundi recorded the highest temperature of 42.8 degree Celsius, while Paradip at 38.8 degree C broke its 35-year-old record. The previous second-highest of the station was 38.2 degree Celsius recorded in 1989. Though the IMD had forecast thundershower activities in many parts between April 21 and 24, its impact was less in the coastal belt due to northwesterly and westerly dry air. Meanwhile, the weather office has now predicted heatwave conditions in parts of Balasore, Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Cuttack, Mayurbhanj, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Jajpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepure, Boudh and Nuapada districts between April 24 and April 27. There will also be hot and humid weather condition in parts of these districts during this period, met officials said adding, that conditions are becoming favourable for moderate thunderstorm activity in parts of the many districts over next two days. Heat Data Heatwave enters 9th day April heatwave average exceeded in Odisha March-June averages more than two heatwave over northern India, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha Spatial distribution shows heatwaves last for 4 to 8 days on an average

Assam CM says no proposal to resettle Chakma Hajong in State

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma speaking at a conclave in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar on Saturday. (Image: DC) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma speaking at a conclave in Odisha capital Bhubaneswar on Saturday. (Image: DC) Guwahati: In what has triggered a major controversy union minister Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said that more than 67000 Chakma-Hajong refugees would be relocated from Arunachal Pradesh to Assam. However, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma immediately came before the media and clarified that there has been no such proposal to relocate Chakma-Hajong from Arunachal Pradesh to Assam. I dont know what Mr Kiren Rijiju said to media, there is no such proposal. Neither Chakma-Hajong leaders met me nor central government has ever contacted me on this issue. I have agreed to provide Permanent Residence Certificate to few hundered Assamese people living in Arunachal Pradesh. Realising the impact of it on ensuing Lok Sabha polling, Mr Sarma said that Mr Rijiju is not any authority on making such remarks. He may have said so for some political reasons, I will talk to him after the elections, said Mr Sarma visibly not happy over the development in the run up to the Lok Sabha polls. Asserting that Chakma Hajong refugees would be relocated outside the frontier state before being granted Indian citizenship under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Mr Rijiju told reporters, They are staying in Arunachal Pradesh as guests. They are not entitled to get a permanent resident certificate (PRC) of citizenship in the frontier state, said Mr Rijiju said this in the presence of state home minister Bamang Felix and BJP MLA from Itanagar, Techi Kacho. Mr Rijiju went on saying, The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a blessing for Arunachal Pradesh. It is out of the purview of Arunachal Pradesh. The CAA grants citizenship to non-Muslim migrants Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians from the three countries. So we will not grant them citizenship or permanent residents in Arunachal. He claimed, We are already in touch to the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about the resettlement of Chakmas in Assam. It is a big issue. There is also resistance from local residents. He informed, We also initiated talk with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. But we dont want to make it public. We have been trying for their resettlement for the past three years. We are looking for suitable land for their resttlement. When we will get land we will tell them to leave the state. He reiterated, We have been working silently on the issue and and Assam government has been urged to identify an appropriate location for their relocation. In 1996, the Supreme Court directed the Centre and the Arunachal Pradesh governments to grant citizenship to Chakma and Hajongs. Still, the state government has refused to accept the judgment and has refused to implement it. In August 2022, the Arunachal Pradesh government announced that it would no longer be issuing residence proof certificates to the Chakma and Hajong refugees in Changlang district following opposition by the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU). As they do not have the proof of residence Chakmas and Hajongs are not Indian citizens and, therefore, are ineligible for official identification documents. The residential proof certificates which were issued by an extra assistant commissioner (EEAC) of Changlang district were also suspended from his service. On April 24, 2023, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu announced that after resolving the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary dispute, he will resolve the Chakma Hajong problem by distributing them in different states of India as the Chakmas and Hajongs being refugees cannot be permanently settled in the state, which is protected as a tribal state under the Constitution of India. Meanwhile, several organisations in Assam including Asom Jatiya Yuva Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) has registered a strong opposition to the proposed resettlement of Chakma-Hajong in Assam.

Streamline anti-TB drugs supply: Odisha government to Centre

BHUBANESWAR : Odisha government has urged the Centre to streamline supply of anti-tuberculosis drugs to the state under National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). In a letter to Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Mansukh L Mandaviya on Monday, state Health Minister Niranjan Pujari stated since February last year, there has been an inadequate supply of anti-TB drugs from the Central TB division, the government of India, which has adversely affected implementation of the programme in the state. Pujari said state authorities have indented the drugs as per their requirement from time to time but supply of the same from Centre has been grossly inadequate. An attempt was made by the state to procure anti-TB drugs locally but the same was unsuccessful due to non-availability of the drugs in the local market, he wrote. TB drugs are also out of stock at several district headquarters hospitals. Although the director of public health and mission director of National Health Mission have brought the matter to the notice of the Centre several times this year and in 2023, there has been no respite from the medicine crisis. Pujari urged Mandaviya to urgently look into the matter and take steps for early supply of TB drugs to the state. The drugs are supplied by the Centre under the National TB Elimination Programme. Odisha is at present ranked second in the country in terms of TB notification and the state has over 50,000 patients under treatment. Earlier this month, The New Indian Express published a report on acute shortage of TB drugs in the state.

Odisha: Siblings held for peddling ganja under lens for Naxal link

BERHAMPUR: The Special Task Force (STF) of Crime Branch seized five cars from two siblings from Kandhamal district who were arrested for their alleged involvement in the ganja trade. Bikas Digal (27) and Soumya Ranjan Digal (25) who belong to Keredi village are reported to have links with the Maoists. The agency with the assistance of Kandhamal Police arrested Soumya from Tikabali on Sunday. The agency had arrested Bikas on April 11 from Bhubaneswar and seized 52 kg ganja along with a car from him. Soumya was with Bikas but had managed to give STF a slip. STF said though the quantity of the ganja seized from the accused is not significant, it is suspected the siblings are part of a bigger racket and have been in the illegal trade since the last three years. The duo mainly procured ganja from Naxal-hit Kandhamal and Boudh districts and the agency is investigating whether they have any links with the red ultras. A thorough probe will be carried out to ascertain whether the accused have any links with Naxals or their sympathizers in Kandhamal-Boudh districts. Special focus is being given on the aspect as in the past Naxals who surrendered before the police had revealed the shady nexus between left-wing extremists and ganja traders, said STF IG, Jai Narayan Pankaj. Bikash and Soumya are Class-X and Class-IX dropouts respectively and their father makes a living by driving an auto-rickshaw in the capital city. Bikas and Soumya have been staying with their family at Sion Shramik Basti in Chandrasekharpur area for the last several years. They reportedly have no income but five cars - Tata Safari, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki S-Cross, Hyundai Santro, Hyundai Eon and two motorcycles were seized from them. All the vehicles are registered in their names, said STF SP, Kishore Kumar Panigrahi. STF will request regional transport offices (RTOs) in Bhubaneswar and Kandhamal to ascertain whether the accused possess any other vehicle. Initial investigation revealed Soumya and Bikas carried ganja consignments in their cars and carried women and children with them to avoid suspicion. The market value of the seized vehicles is more than `50 lakh. As per NDPS Act, immovable and movable property accumulated by the accused in the last six years through crime proceeds will be seized and we will move the competent authority in Kolkata for forfeiture of the same, said Panigrahi.

BJD drops four MLAs from list for 6 Assembly seats

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik on Monday announced candidates for six more Assembly seats. While Dhenkanal MP Mahesh Sahoo will contest from Hindol, Archanarekha Behera has been fielded from Raghunathpalli, Sarada Prasad Jena from Balikuda-Erasama, Ranjita Marndi from Bangiriposi, Biswaranjan Mallick from Bari and minister of state for Home, Sports and Youth Services Tusharkanti Behera from Kakatpur. Four sitting MLAs Simarani Nayak from Hindol, Subrat Tarai from Raghunathpalli, former minister Raghunandan Das from Balikuda-Erasama and Sunanda Das from Bari have been dropped. Ranjita who has been fielded from the Bangiriposi is the wife of Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Sudam Marndi. Sudam has been fielded by the party from Mayurbhanj Lok Sabha seat. Similarly, Archararekha is the wife of Subrat Tarai. Mahesh was replaced by Abinash Samal as the Lok Sabha candidate. He has been asked to contest from the Hindol Assembly segment in place of sitting MLA Simarani Nayak. Simarani, a two-time MLA, quit the party protesting the decision. The Balikuda-Ersama MLA Raghunandan Das has raised a banner of revolt and said he is preparing for a show of strength at Balikuda before deciding on his next course of action in consultation with his supporters. Das said he will contest as an Independent from the seat, if required. Interestingly, both Das and Jena had contested the 2014 Assembly election from the seat as Independents. While Das had polled 32,195 votes, Jena had got 23,948 against BJD candidate Prashant Kumar Muduli who got 59,538 votes. Jena had then joined Congress and switched to BJD. In 2019, Das had defeated Congress candidate Lalatendu Mohapatra. Similarly, there has been strong resentment among supporters of former BJD MLA Surendra Sethi after the leadership ignored his claims for nomination from Kakatpur. He had won the seat on a BJD ticket in 2014. In 2019, he had been replaced by Tusharkanti Behera. Alleging Behera, the minister and sitting MLA, had neglected his constituency after winning, Sethi said he had remained connected with the people and carried forward the party organisation. He said he will file nomination as an Independent from the seat. Sunanda, who had been eyeing a ticket from Bari, is also disappointed at being ignored by the party. She alleged the leadership never called her for a discussion on the issue. With the latest list, the BJD has announced 141 candidates for the Assembly seats. Only six more candidates are left to be finalised.

Odisha: Frauds used cloned cheques to siphon off Rs 4.5 cr from Mayurbhanj district mineral foundation account

BHUBANESWAR: A bunch of inter-state frauds reportedly from neighbouring states targetted the Mayurbhanj District Mineral Foundation (DMF) fund by using cloned cheques to swindle around Rs 4.5 crore from the bank account. The DMF account of zilla parishad is maintained with the Bank of India. Preliminary probe indicated the gang of frauds sent a fabricated letterhead of Mayurbhanj Collector with his fake signature via courier to the bank requesting to link a mobile phone number with the account of DMF. The unsuspecting bank officials linked the mobile phone number of the miscreants with the DMF account of zilla parishad, Mayurbhanj, following which Rs 4.5 crore was withdrawn on April 10 and transferred to bank accounts in Kolkata and Raipur, said sources. EOW suspects the scamsters possibly came to know of the cheque numbers through statements of the bank account of DMF and deposited the cloned cheques accordingly. A few days later, they again attempted to withdraw Rs 5.5 crore, but this time the bank manager found it suspicious and informed police of the matter. When the money was not released after the second cheque was deposited, one of the gang members telephoned the manager of the bank impersonating the collector and inquired about the matter, said police sources. The bank officials immediately lodged a complaint with Mayurbhanj police but as the matter was sensitive, its investigation was handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Crime Branch. A team of EOW visited Baripada on April 21 and launched a probe into the matter. Preliminary investigation suggests the gang members are based out of neighbouring Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal, said EOW sources. Since the frauds had got their mobile phone number linked with the bank account of DMF to receive OTPs and other information, it was easy for them to evade the notice of the DMF managers. However, how the gang members accessed the bank statement and details of cheque is under scrutiny and role of insiders is not ruled out since the fund concerns crores of rupees. This is not the first time DMF funds have been swindled by depositing cloned cheques. In November last year, a fraudster allegedly swindled around 22 lakh from the DMF account of the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), Sambalpur by depositing cloned cheques.

Will BJD and Soumya Ranjan make up or BJP have him ?

BHUBANESWAR: Even as the BJD is reportedly trying to warm up to sitting Khandapada MLA Soumya Ranjan Patnaik after expelling him, hoping he would accept renomination from the seat, the leader is reportedly contemplating contesting from Ghasipura constituency in Keonjhar district on a BJP ticket. The BJP is in touch with Patnaik after he was expelled from BJD for anti-party activities in September last year. The saffron party has reportedly left it to Patnaik to choose any constituency he would like to contest from. The offer was given to Patnaik after obtaining permission from top leaders of BJP, especially Union Home Minister Amit Shah. State BJP president Manmohan Samal is stated to have offered Ranpur Assembly seat to Patnaik before the release of the first list of candidates for 112 seats which the latter declined, party sources familiar with the development told The New Indian Express. The BJD is reportedly keen to nominate a family member of Patnaik from Khandapada seat for which there are a large number of contenders including former MLA Anubhav Patnaik. Meanwhile, Samal has been working out a suitable date for the induction of the Khandapada MLA into the BJP. With Shah coming to the state on April 25 to attend a public rally at Sonepur, chances are BJP will grab the opportunity to formalise Patnaiks induction on the day. Patnaiks choice of Ghasipura stems from the fact it was the seat of his elder brother and senior Congress leader Niranjan Patnaik who had tried his luck from Bhandaripokhari in 2019 after repeated drubbings at the hand of sitting BJD MLA and former minister Badri Narayan Patra. He has got the partys renomination from Bhandaripokhari this time. The Patnaiks hail from Anandpur of Keonjhar district where they have business interest in mining for decades.

My fathers campaign will have a positive impact: Manmath Routray

Your name was announced as BJDs candidate from Bhubaneswar Lok Sabha seat only hours after you joined the party. The fact that you were keen to join politics was known but there was confusion over which party you would choose. Did you have an inkling that you will be chosen for the Bhubaneswar seat? BJD has a wide range and offers more options to serve people than any other political party including Congress. There was no confusion on my part and I had never announced that I will contest from Congress. By giving me an opportunity to contest from Bhubaneswar, the BJD and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik have given me a golden chance to serve people. That is my focus now, to win the seat and serve the people. Your father Suresh Routray is a known face in Bhubaneswar and has a significant following. He is also campaigning for you. The Congress expelled him from the party for campaigning for you openly. How will his campaigning affect your performance ? I think my fathers campaign for me will definitely have a positive impact on my performance. He is an institution and for the last 60 years, people of Bhubaneswar and nearby areas know him personally. I have his blessings which is great. He is also campaigning for me. I have learnt values of life like service to people from him. But your opponent, sitting BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi is known for her connect with people. She seems to be always among people. How will you counter this ? I do not know much about her connect with people. I know she has a great social media presence. But I believe in working for people at the grassroots. I am banking on the good work done by the Naveen Patnaik government for the people. My opponent (Aparajita) is talking about performance. But where has she performed and what has she achieved? So you feel defeating her will be easy ? See, the situation has changed since the last elections. Back then, people thought a lady is contesting. Besides, she is also a former municipal commissioner. People thought let us give her a chance. But things are not so easy for her this time. Last time Congress had not fielded a candidate for the seat. This time it has. What will be its impact ? I do not think there will be much of an impact of the Congress candidate. Congress has completed a formality by fielding its candidate. No doubt, the party will garner some votes. But it will not have any major impact. So are you sure BJD will win from Bhubaneswar this time? Not only the party will win from Bhubaneswar seat, its performance will be decent in both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The party will win more Lok Sabha and Assembly seats this time than 2019.

Sambalpur is an arena for Odishas big fight between Dharmendra Pradhan and Pranab Prakash Das

BHUBANESWAR: If there is one constituency in Odisha to watch for in the ensuing Lok Sabha polls, it is Sambalpur where two of the biggest political heavyweights of the state, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan of BJP and BJD organisation secretary Pranab Prakash Das are locked in a high-profile battle for ballot. The ruling BJD took everyone by surprise by fielding Das from Sambalpur, an epicentre of western Odisha politics with a strong bias towards the coastal region of the state. Never before had any political party dared such an experiment. While Das, a three-time MLA from Jajpur and second-in-command in the BJD structure, accepted the challenge thrown to him by the party to take on Pradhan, the Union minister, though does not have the outsider baggage as he was once elected from the erstwhile Deogarh Lok Sabha seat in 2004. After the delimitation exercise in 2008, the Deogarh Lok Sabha seat comprising Pallahara, Talcher, Brajarajnagar, Jharsuguda, Laikera, Kuchinda and Deogarh Assembly segments ceased to exist with the formation of Bargarh Lok Sabha constituency. Two Assembly constituencies of Pallahara and Talcher merged with Dhenkanal Lok Sabha seat while Brajarajnagar and Jharsuguda segments became part of Bargarh Lok Sabha. Kuchinda and Deogarh are now under the Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat. The Deogarh Parliamentary seat was also represented by his father former Union Minister Debendra Pradhan in 2000. After winning from the seat in 2004, the Pradhan junior fought the Assembly elections in 2009 from Pallahara but lost. He has since been away from direct electoral politics and was involved in organisational activities before becoming a minister in the Modi cabinet as a Rajya Sabha MP in 2014 and continued after 2019. While he is returning to the electoral fray after 15 years, it is still an advantageous terrain for him as he is fairly acquainted with the political contours of the Parliamentary constituency and has the acceptability of the people as one among them as he hails from Talcher of Angul district. Internal strife in all parties muddies Sambalpur poll turf Sambalpur was once a Congress bastion, but the grand old party has been vanquished from the constituency ever since BJD and BJP allied in 1998. BJD veteran Prasanna Acharya was elected thrice from the seat in 1998, 1999 and 2004 but the party lost to Amar Pradhan of Congress in 2009. However, the BJD retained the seat in 2014 by relegating the sitting MP Pradhan to third position. Suresh Pujari of the BJP secured the second position. In 2019, the BJD lost the seat to BJP by a narrow margin. The regional party had fielded retired chief engineer Nalini Kanta Pradhan while Nitesh Ganga Deb, scion of the Deogarh royal family, was the BJP candidate. Former MP and present president of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee Sarat Pattanayak had shifted from Bargarh to Sambalpur in the election, but fared a distant third. The Congress has this time fielded Dulal Chandra Pradhan from the seat. A political greenhorn, Dulal has been the vice-president of Sambalpur District Athletics Association. Hailing from Rairakhol and settled in Sambalpur, he had never contested any election before his selection for this Lok Sabha seat, said a local leader.

Who's hot, hotter, hottest among us?

Cities in India are engaging in a heat competition, boasting about their ability to endure high temperatures while also complaining about the heat. New Delhi has yet to reach 40C, disqualifying it from the competition, while a western disturbance has spared Maharashtra, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. The eastern front, however, is experiencing a heatwave, providing residents of Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal with plenty to discuss. Sunday's forecast includes temperatures of 39C in Delhi and Ranchi, 37C in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and 41C to 44C in Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, and Patna, respectively.
